Unlocked my first tempered elder dragon investigation: Vaal Hazak. Here's hoping it will reward me with better jewels than the crap I've been getting so far.
If you're looking for decorations you're better off doing tier 2 tempered investigations. The elder dragons (tier 3) are more about warrior and hero streamstones for augmenting

I just had the most frustrating night of Monster Hunter since buying the game. It feels like I'm dying way more all of the sudden, and I can't figure out why.

Holy shit I actually did it. The most difficult hunt so far: the Phantom Bird.

Seriously, I'm proud I figured it out without consulting a guide or any sort of outside help.

After observing Aptonoth through my binoculars for over 30 minutes it finally clicked: the endemic life researcher ("wowzers!") said the bird lives on the back of Aptonoth and scare very easily. During normal expeditions, there's always one large monster around to spook the Aptonoth themselves. So I needed to do the one mission in the Ancient Forest without any large monsters around: the very first one in which you hunt the small Jagras.

Next target: the Ancient Fish...

LOL!!!. Have you even got to that part of the game?

This is false info, you might get 1 stone for every 300 gems at the end of a tier 3 quest. Some people have reached HR100 and not gotten any.

Tier 3 gives you a better chance of rarer gems.

Nice!! I found them all with no hassle apart from the stickly thing. Seems its on the back of a warthog somewhere but never seen one.

Great Maccao is actually pretty tough though. I'd wager it's one of the harder 1st monsters in the series.

G.Maccao is my favorite tutorial monster. He teaches players things like monster opening tied to monster behavior(360 degree tail slam followed by taunting for opening), how to time dodge (the homing jumping kick), and when to attack/when to dodge (risking interrupting his jumping kick windup for a topple, or dodge/block to avoid risking damage).

It's really disappointing Great Jagras is so simple despite the hunters having all these new fancy moveset.

------------------------

Going to pick Hammer for my next weapon, any tips how to effectively use it ?

- What to do when there is no large opening ? Charged attack ?

- Which moveset to do when the monster is downed/toppled ?

- When to use the Power Charge ?

- Finally which Hammer to craft that are not Diablos (I hate monster-part-tacked-on-bone design) ?

This tempered Kirin quest at 49 might be the dumbest most frustrating mission I have ever done in any game I have ever played in my life.

Oh my God, the 03-30 event, is that an equipable Kulu-Ya-Ku head?

I hope it has a useful skill like the Wiggler head.
I'm sure people think I'm trolling them and not taking things seriously when I turn up in that thing when hunting an elder dragon in multiplayer, but with wide range 2 and a wide range deco it's brilliant.

I have quite a hard time fighting tempered Kirin as well. Took me about 20 mins to solo and 2 trips back to base.

My friends and I created the Kirin Bomb Squad for team play. Here's the results:

I'm trying to make rapid fire Elemental LBG work, but it just doesn't seem worth it. I'm using the Kadachi LBG with Attack Up 7, Weakness Exploit 3, Critical Element set bonus, and Thunder Attack 2 (3 is the cap for it, but the difference is only 1 point of damage) against Legiana (3 star thunder weakness).

Then I switch over to Karma with identical skills plus normal shot up and both crits and non crits are doing 50-100% more damage just rapid firing Normal Shot 2. What's even the point of targeting the weakness if generic ammo will do more?

Take your time his tells are easy. Take thunder mantle. He will be toast.

Its not him thats the problem. Its the idiots getting one shot by his lightning by standing in it and taking away all my faints. And as a horn user its halfway impossible for me to hit him. Either he blasts me with the BS lightning he gets to summon around himself at random while I am in my swing animation or I get one MAYBE two hits and then I gotta roll out before he nukes me too.

The community consensus is that T2 gives the more useful decos. See for e.g. the recent gaijinhunter video talking about the track collecting event quest.

Tier 3 gives you a better chance of rarer gems.

You should probably watch the video Gaijin Hunter put up that shows the actual decoration tables and drop/conversion rates from the Japanese guide books.

The short version: if you want the rarest decorations Tier 2 Tempered Investigations (HR30) are significantly better for that. They have a 26% chance per reward box of having the highest tier of decorations, whereas Tier 3 has only 13%.

You do Tier 3 to get Warrior/Hero Streamstones. If you don't need those anymore, you should probably just be doing Tier 2.

So I'm up to the double tempered Bazel quest but haven't had much motivation to finish it after getting destroyed a few times. Is it worth getting through the next two assigned missions just so I'm building up hunter rank while I'm farming for stuff?

I can only tell you what I did for that mission.

Make a Kodachi Strike Bow and make Ingot armor to boost the Thunder damage. (He is VERY weak to Thunder) . Let them beat the shit out of each other while you lob Dragon Piercers.

I engaged them in that little bit of jungle with the Gajalaka and the poisoncups. Sliced the cups open and then just ran around giggling, I'm pretty sure the Gajalaka and poison did like 79% of the damage and they did another 20% to each other.

Why not solo the mission then? That solves your main point of frustration (other people dying). You can always bring another weapon if hunting horn doesn't do the job for you. I recommend bringing a hammer and bashing its skull in with slide/spin attacks on the slope outside the top camp. That'll soften it op greatly. With judicious use of lightning resist armor, eating elemental resist (L) and mantles the fight is very doable.

Yeah. I'll add as an alternate option: LBG sleep/bombing + finishing him off with slice to the face. If all else fails, pop over to discord and have people from era sessions give you a hand.

If people are flopping are flopping on the tempered Kirin mission, I'd just play it solo.

I play on XB1 so I barely get people joining my games anyway but that would annoy me, friend or not, lol. Mantle is a must have, although I'm an IG user, so the thunder is much easier to dodge.

Tempered Kirin is barely doable on multiplayer unless you have people that have consistently beat him before(and these people are in investigations). You have to do it solo. Its almost required.

Except I can't or I would have already done that.

Hence why it is pissing me off as bad as it is. There is too much random bullshit that this fight has that NO OTHER FIGHT HAS and its honestly bullshit to train players to fight a certain way the entire game and then present them with a monster that defies everything they were taught leading up to that point.

You can stack lightning resistance. I don't know how high you can stack it before it stops reducing damage but you can have at least 20 resistance to avoid being one shotted, and 30 is where you'll be more comfortable. Paralysis resistance can also mitigate a lot of the deaths.

Kirin (tempered especially) is more of a resistance check than anything.
