Despite generally positive reviews, Amazon cancelled their series Good Girls Revolt less than two months after it premiered. Stories of behind-the-scenes trouble with Amazon's former head of drama and comedy were cited as the death knell for the series, along with poor viewership. Now a newly released report reveals just how poor that viewership was.

Critics liked Good Girls Revolt, and the show's positive message of gender equality was rightfully lauded – and just the sort of thing we need more of on TV. Yet the viewership just wasn't there. Reuters has a new report on Amazon's internal numbers on Prime Video, and the numbers for Good Girls Revolt left a lot to be desired. Per the report, Good Girls Revolt "had total U.S. viewership of 1.6 million but cost $81 million, with only 52,000 first streams worldwide by Prime members…The program's cost per new customer was about $1560, according to the documents." For contrast, here's a chart Reuters ran to show their other show's "cost per first stream."

While those viewership numbers for Good Girls Revolt are damning, there were other issues at play as well. Good Girls Revolt creator Dana Calvo told THR that internal leadership at Amazon was to blame for the show's cancellation. Per Calvo, former Amazon Studios head Roy Price – who resigned from the company following a claim of sexual harassment – never gave the show a chance. "What we hadn't factored in is that [Amazon Studios head] Roy Price just doesn't care for the show," said Calvo. "He's representative of the Amazon culture in that he's just impenetrable."

Price allegedly took very little interest in the show, claiming it wasn't worth paying much attention to because it wasn't an "awards contender." Calvo added: "All I know is that in the [season two] pitch, he asked us to refer to the characters by the actors' names because he didn't know the characters' names."

Calvo went on to say:

"The Amazon corporate culture that everyone knows is a tough one, and it's not a great place for creatives. They run some people out."

Maybe they shouldn't have named it "Good Girls Revolt".

After Mad Men, every show set in this period just looks like cosplay by comparison.

P.S. Can TV please stop romanticizing shitty eras in American history? And if they must, can they find other decades to mine from?

That graph tells me a few things:

They will never cancel Grand Tour
High Castle is a hit, Bosch too
Sneaky Pete should've been cancelled
This graph sucks
Amazon needs better metrics

What about...second show streamed? I understand how it's a good evaluation metric, but content creation for customer retention has to count for something.

Fake Edit: Just clicked through to the source Reuters article, even regular total viewership isn't hot. Never even heard of this show.

Shame to see Sneaky Pete up there. It certainly doesn't look like an attractive option if one is just browsing Amazon content, but I think it's easily their best show - of any genre.

Also Amazon in particular overspends like a motherfucker on their original content

Like Netflix spends absurd amounts, but Amazon goes all in on crazy-expensive prestige stuff like Last Tycoon

Dunno, Mad Men seemed pretty cosplay-ish to me. Then again, I wasn't a fan of the show.
For all its faults, the show's wardrobe and set design were impeccable. It's the one thing the show never slacked on.

Speaking of which, I wonder what state Weiner's Amazon project is in the recent allegations leveled against him.

I have amazon prime... but I never remember it has video content. I spend most of my time on youtube, Twitch, or Crunchyroll. Heck, I barely even use Netflix anymore... I should probably cancel it.

That said, when I DO remember... I just can never find anything that really catches my eye and I never see any buzz or adverts for Prime exclusive shows so it's hard to even guess what might be worth watching or not.

The other graph, showing that Sneaky Pete's first season cost $93 million, was kind of shocking to see. Working my way through that first season now and, while shot beautifully, I would have never imagined the cost. Must be a talent cost thing for producers and such, and high marketing.

I really like what Amazon's been doing with their shows, but it's unfortunate to see that cost-to-first-stream ratio for Good Girls Revolt.

Also, watch Bosch.

for the love of god you fucks need to watch Sneaky Pete, if I don't get a season 3....

I'm working my way through. I'm really, really liking it!

Seems like a flawed metric; 2/3rds of U.S. households already have Prime, and it's higher among higher income brackets. (And even higher when you consider shared logins).

Like, which weirdos are left who don't have Prime and would subscribe for a specific show?

Don't know about the show but the nonfiction book it's adapted from definitely didn't romanticize the era. It's about how the female staff of Newsweek successfully sued the magazine for sexist practices.

Hopefully TMITHC season 3 does well enough for them to continue with the series. It's the only Prime series I have any real interest in.

81 million? Did they research time travel to film during the period?

All this graph is telling me is that Bosch is probably a good show

I mean, it's got Titus Welliver and Lance Reddick, so it can't be shit... Right?

Bosch is a great show. I rarely binge watch anything and put it on as a lark because I saw Titus Welliver in the thumbnail, and then I couldn't stop watching. Season 2 isn't as strong as Season 1, though.

Going by these numbers, how much does Star Trek Discovery cost? 456 Million? Cause that is a good looking show

That seems like an odd metric to me, I'd be surprised if anyone subscribed to Amazon prime because of a single show like this. It doesn't help that they're even worse than Netflix when it comes to promoting their own content... I have a Fire TV and I have never found a way to search for only things that are available for free on Amazon prime, let alone Amazon originals. Like they dumped all the anime strike shows on the service and I have to search for anime strike to find them.

Amazon has a real UI problem when it comes to Kindle/Prime Video. They need to hire designers for that bit, or just straight up splinter it off into different sites like Audible, cause it ain't workin'.

I been saying that, cause i try to tell people about Prime Video and they say they don't shop enough to worry about shipping. Their streaming really needs it's own identity, they already offer it separate, that is a good start

This is incredibly true. On Android TV, the video quality of the CBS All Access app is worse than the quality of CBS All Access channel when subscribed through Amazon, but the Amazon UI is abysmal compared to most other streaming apps. Getting to CBS Live is way more of a maze than it should be.
