2nd update of the year! Figured it was time to push it. As opposed to my last update, what I played was a lot more varied.

#5 Superhot VR – Completed 1/11/18
#6 Farpoint – Completed 1/14/18
#7 Monster Hunter: World – Completed 1/23/18
#8 Celeste – Completed 2/1/18
#9 Spyro the Dragon – Completed 2/7/18

Superhot VR - This was the first game I finished with PSVR. Great fun when the tracking works well, and something I'll probably go back to in the future. Makes you really feel like you're in the Matrix.

Farpoint - Got this with the PSVR Aim Controller, and while it's not a great game on it's own, the controller certainly helps it stand out. Hoo boy were the animations pretty jank though.

Monster Hunter: World - I reviewed this, so I won't say much here. I already have 200+ hours.

Celeste - Fantastic game, and I'm really glad I decided to pick it up to play in-between Monster Hunter sessions. Worked really well to keep me from burning out on MH quickly, and it's probably the best 2D platformer I've played since Dustforce!

Spyro the Dragon - This game was probably really great, once. God it has not aged well. Thankfully it was short... finally wiped this off my backlog. I think I bought this when I first got my PS3 in, what, 2008? Probably was one of the longest games that was stuck in that thing.

Ah geez, I let my completed games double before posting an update! I'll probably be at over 20 completed by the end of the week, too...

#10 Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds: Overdrive – Completed 2/8/18
#11 Super Punchout – Completed 2/19/18
#12 Star Fox – Completed 2/19/18
#13 Part Time UFO – Completed 2/26/18
#14 Kirby: Triple Deluxe – Completed 3/6/18
#15 Kirby: Planet Robobot – Completed 3/8/18
#16 Kirby's Dream Land 2 – Completed 3/9/18
#17 Kirby's Dream Land 3 – Completed 3/10/18
#18 Night in the Woods – Completed 3/12/18

Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds: Overdrive - I played through this one on the trip up to SF for the NISA press event last month. Haven't played a beat-em-up since I want to say the SImpsons arcade game. Fun stuff, got to play as Kurisu from Steins;Gate. Nothing amazing but well worth the money I paid.

Super Punchout - First game I beat on my SNES Classic. Thank god for rewind, because man are those later fights a pain! I loved the game, but it's brutal. More like a rhythm game than a fighting game.

Star Fox - Hasn't aged too well, but I still liked it. It helps that it's super short - beat it in around an hour or less, I'd say. I should get to Star Fox 2.

Part Time UFO - I had some Google Play credits on my account, they've been there a while... I decided to actually use them, and this game's western release was a good enough excuse. I wish there was a Switch version so I could have button controls, but it's still a great game! Reminds me of Rhythm Heaven, has that sort of charm. Cute.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe & Kirby: Planet Robobot - Feels appropriate to list both of these at once. Definitely some of the better games in the series, fun romps with some neat gimmicks. Triple Deluxe felt fresher playing them back-to-back, but the Robot was the better gimmick by far.

Kirby's Dream Land 2 & 3 - Also felt appropriate to talk about both of these at once. Dream Land 3 plays better, looks nicer, and has the better soundtrack, but I'm not sure which I liked more. At first I liked the Heart Stars but some of them were pains in the ass. Ugh.

Night in the Woods - I hopped off the Kirby train midway through Super Star to prevent myself from getting burnt out. I just couldn't play a Kirby game anymore or I'd go crazy, so I went with this. I've heard great things, other folks at RPG Site kept talking about how great it is, so I decided to finally get at it. Loved the music, loved the art, loved the story. Loved it. Switch had some performance issues, but I doubt most will notice it - I'm pretty sensitive to framerate changes.

Decent puzzle game with some cool design ideas. Doesn't really come together as a wholly satisfying experience but each individual part works and is enjoyable.

18. Monster Hunter World

March. 10/10

What to say that hasn't been said already. Easily my choice for GOTY 2018 thus far. This game is the distilled and purest experience the Monster Hunter franchise has put together, and is a great base for future games in the franchise. Essentially 14 different games in one due to the unique playstyle of each (Hard to say no to the Hunting Horn though) and the core gameplay is so fun that near everything else is simply seasoning to an already delicious offering. A spectacular game, and one of the single most enjoyable experiences I've had this decade.

This is a very nice game. It feels good to play. I ended up abandoning flOw due to how poor it controls but simply put this game was a breeze. A very cute credits sequence as well.

Currently Playing:
Pokemon Platinum Version (Commute)
Shadow of the Colossus (Home)
Monster Hunter World (always and forever)

14. Fable Anniversary -
I don't know why I like Fable so much. The combat is lame, the story is run of the mill, the quests mostly suck, and there's a loading screen every 10 seconds. But something about this game brings me joy, and replaying it at 4K was a blast. Anniversary completely butchers the art style of the original game, but it otherwise feels like the Fable I remember playing over a decade ago.

15. Cubot -
This is a fairly basic little puzzle game that I bought because it's only a couple bucks on XB1. It starts off incredibly simple, move the blue block to the blue square on the board. Once it starts adding other colors, which move completely differently than the blue block (move opposite, move two squares, etc.), it becomes quite complicated. One of the last levels takes almost 100 turns if you do it perfectly. The simple art combined with the serene music make it an enjoyable, and relaxing experience.

16. Energy Cycle -
Another puzzle game I bought because of the price. Currently on sale for $1.50, and I heard it was an easy 100%, so I grabbed it. It's definitely a quick an easy way to pad your GS or Trophies if that's what you're looking for. The puzzles are alright, but the entire presentation reminds me of those crappy flash games you used to play when your teacher wasn't looking in computer science class.

17. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons - ★★
I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't this. I had heard of this game before, but the idea of controlling a different character with each analog stick totally turned me off of the game. Having played it, I still think it's a horrible way to play a game, but everything else in this game makes up for it. The art is great; fantastically depicting a world that is both beautiful and depressingly miserable. Brothers tells a powerful and emotional tale of adventure, all without a single line of dialogue. I wasn't very interested in A Way Out before, but now it's a game I can't wait to play.

14. Wario World - Gamecube
Completed 3/13/18
Score - 6/10

What a weird ass game. I expected a game of crazy, nonsensical weirdness and I got that. What I didn't expect was how much of a pain in the ass it was to play. I was fighting the controls and the camera by the end of the game. It was simple enough at the beginning but it just became annoying at the end, the last level really took the cake. The bosses all followed the same structure and were super easy. I did end up beating it and getting the second best ending. It was also surprisingly short. I think it lasted maybe 4 1/2 hours. I am glad I played it but I don't think I will ever touch it again. I enjoy Wario and eventually plan on playing his normal side-scrolling adventures. Hopefully I like those more.

Well I'm still way behind where I would need to get close to 52 this year but I'm still having fun and that's the important thing!

GAME #02: Descenders
RageSquid - PC - ★★★☆☆

Completion State:
Completed all boss jumps and played a lot of free run (10.4 hours, 74% Steam achievements)

Comments:
Descenders is basically an arcade downhill mountain biking game where the tracks are procedurally generated. There are four terrain types each with it's own style, unique ramps and final "boss jump". These boss jumps are larger than life jumps each with it's own flavour that must be beaten three times to unlock a short cut to begin your run in each of the terrain types.

The game can be pretty challenging and the points loss for crashing is pretty severe in the career mode but that really doesn't matter as you hurl your way down a course, pulling off stunts with deft use of left and right stick while nodding your head to the great (assuming you like fairly floaty DnB) soundtrack. The sense of speed, the risk, the easy-to-understand-hard-to-master controls, all combine to make for a great time.

The game is technically in early access but there are no glaring technical bugs or performance issues (Ryzen 5 1600 / 1060 6gb). Content could be argued to be slim but the procedural generation of the tracks makes for a reasonable amount of replayability. The devs also seem committed to adding additional content and have already added a free run mode where you can tailor the course generation parameters or even just use a typed seed. They have also teased a park type level with half pipes and the like. If and when they do I will definitely pick it up again and play some more.

All in all, a really good game that with some additional content capitalising on the great stunt controls could be on the cusp of being truly great.

18. Super Mario Odyssey

super-mario-odyssey-cover.jpg

The game that made Mario cool again after a decade of subpar, meandering nonsense. I'd probably consider it the best Mario game ever because unlike the last 30 years of Mario this game has charm, character and personality, and that's on top of the game constantly throwing a million new brilliant ideas at you.

5. Gears of War: Ultimate Edition
Xbox One X | Time Played: 8 hours | Rating: 8.5/10
I had this in my backlog for some time but waited until my friend got his Xbox One to check it out. Without a doubt, it was the co-op funniest experience in all my time in gaming, despite having a cliche story there is something about the brotherly bond of characters which makes it so much fun. There are issues mainly stemming from terrible bosses and laughable connection problems.

I realize I haven't spoken out about the games I've been playing.

Main Post

1: Xenoblade Chronicles 2

The first game I beat this year was a holdover from last year. I tried to finish it before the end of 2017 and did not accomplish this task. So I beat it in early 2018 instead.

2: Dragon Ball FighterZ (Story mode)

The novelty of this mode wore off quickly. I had also unlocked SSGSS Goku and SSGSS Vegeta.

3: Pokémon Ultra Sun

I should have expected this to be very similar to Sun. Too similar. I hadn't played the updated rerelease of a Pokémon Generation in some time. Not that I thought this was bad, but I would have liked it if it had differentiated itself more from its previous version.

4: Super Mario Land

Gamexplain's Coolbits video on Super Mario Land 2 kicked off a Mini-Mario Marathon in me. So I started with this one, which is very different from other 2D Mario games. Still great, though.

5: Super Mario Land 2

This one was a joy to go back to. It takes a lot from the first SML, but improves everything. I still really like the Bunny power up.

6: Super Mario Bros.

It's been a few years since I gave this one a go. Still a classic.

7: Super Mario Bros. 2

Speaking of "very different," SMB 2 (or SMUSA) is still really good.

8: Super Mario Bros. 3

A classic if ever there was one. So many cool power-ups. So many cool stages. This game is so damn good.

9: Pushmo

I bought this many a year ago and finally got around to playing this cute little puzzle game. Thanks, Era!

10: The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

I restarted this one as soon as it was released as part of the 3DS Ambassador Program, but put it away in favor of other games that I hadn't beaten. I'd always been meaning to go back to it and finish it again. I finally did. It's a little more simplistic than I remember it being, and a little easier than I remember it being, but still an interesting one.

I still update my main post whenever I beat a game. I might do a follow-up after I finish up another 10 games.

#21 Ghost of a Tale (PC) | 15.7h | March 15 | ★★★½

I enjoyed my time with it but it has some flaws which became more apparent the further I progressed in the game. Graphics and art style are gorgeous and the performance is good as well. The story was solid and well written and it really is a shame that the game didn't get voice acting. Too bad that the ending was somewhat underwhelming. The gameplay is fun in the beginning but becomes a bit too repetitive. I liked the idea that you have to disguise to get different dialogue options/to solve a quests but then again the search for the different parts was a bit of a chore. And it had a lot of bugs. Nothing game breaking but I had to reload or restart several times, so it pays off to save quite often.

Games #1-20

Just hit 20, so it seems sensible to retire my first post and begin filling a new one given the length of some of my reflections.

21. SD The Great Battle (SNES) - Beaten: 15/03/18 - Time Taken: ~2 hours (Credits)

Aeon Genesis recently announced that they'd localised 5 titles in the Banpresto 'The Great Battle' series. I have zero interest in anime, but I was intrigued by the titles all being built upon different genres, and thought it might be fun to try and play through them. The first game in the series is a top down action title that features mazey stage layouts and plenty of boss fights (that I probably would have got more out of if I knew any of the source material this game was based on). Pretty fun overall. Too easy perhaps when played on Easy, so I've been trying to beat it on Normal to try and extend my playtime. I can consistently get to the last boss without continuing, but then death means you lose all special power, a tool pretty important to taking down the larger enemies in any sort of reasonable time.

22. CounterSpy (PS4 + Vita) - Beaten: 23/03/18 - Time Taken: ~5 hours (Majority of Trophies [PSN])

Richter1887 mentioned this game earlier in the thread, heaping it with praise, but also offering a PSA that its online servers were soon to be taken offline rendering a trophy unobtainable. Although I don't really hunt achievements or trophies like I used to when I had more free time, I do enjoy grinding games occasionally.

I was pretty hooked by CounterSpy's gameplay loop from my first session with it on the Vita. Traversal is fun; the semi-procedurally generated level layouts keep the largely repetitive gameplay from growing too stale; and the ability to continue your game on either platform made chipping away at this one quite the treat. I haven't started tackling higher difficulties yet to polish off the last few trophies, but I definitely intend to. Recommended.

23. Little Adventure on the Prairie (PS4 + Vita) - Beaten: 27/03/18 - Time Taken: ~90 minutes (All Trophies x2 [PSN])

Another double platinum, though while My Name is Mayo had some redeeming qualities, this really was trash from start to finish.

At around age 11 I used to make basic games using Klik N Play, a piece of software that would eventually become Multimedia Fusion 2. I'm not speaking in hyperbole when I say the platform games I made then were more functionally and mechanically sound than Little Adventure. The player character gets snagged on the tiniest bump in the scenery. Collision detection between player and enemy is laughably poor, and beating certain levels can feel entirely dependent on luck as your life bar drains at a rate beyond logical comprehension. There are no sound effects or obvious visual cue for taking damage. Level one includes a hidden area found through backtracking, but this incredibly basic design 'trick' is never employed again across the next 11 stages as they're all entirely linear. Even the menus are unresponsive. Truly dire.

24. Fragment's Note (PSM [Vita]) - Beaten: 27/03/18 - Time Taken: ~8 hours (All Endings)

I'm not entirely sure what made me pick up a visual novel, least of all this relatively mediocre release. Seeing an English translation first through Android and iOS ports, Fragment's Note found its way to the short lived Playstation Mobile store on Vita and compatible phones.

With just three choices made within the first hour of story dictating the remainder of the narrative, the game feels very limited compared to others in the genre. It's reasonably well written, with characters that I didn't mind, even if none of them really stood out to me. The writing relies on a lot of anime / VN tropes, and while I'm not particularly literate in either medium, that I could recognise so many of the recurring archetypes in the leads and supporting cast shows that Fragment's Note plays it preeeety safe.

I played through all four endings (the failure ending for choosing inconsistently across the 3 aforementioned choices as well as the three character-centric endings) and feel compelled to give some other VNs a shot later in the year. Think I'll take a bit of a genre break for now though.

25. Cat Quest (PS4) - Beaten: 31/03/18 - Time Taken: ~12 hours (All Trophies [PSN])

Years ago I blazed through Ron Gilbert's Deathspank games on the 360. There was something about the streamlined loot system, action RPG combat and writing that really appealed to me. They're not games I've felt compelled to go back to, but found each of them hard to put down once I'd started them.

Cat Quest gives me a very similar vibe to Gilbert's games. The writing is more twee than it is clever (and I've never been a fan of puns, something which this game revels in), but the combat and snappy pace again kept me interested for the time it took to 100% the game. The final trophy, to hit level 99, required just 30 minutes grinding at the very end of the game, a credit to how the game spreads its content.

26. Gun Commando (PSM [Vita]) - Beaten: 31/03/18 - Time Taken: ~3 hours (Credits)

A Wolf3D-inspired FPS for the ill-fated Playstation Mobile platform. Each level is plain, and the game's boxy stages are filled with simple enemies that follow predictable patterns of attack, with Doom's trademark keycards not making an appearance until the last run of stages.

The game is fun enough, but the controls are truly awful. Being available on the Vita means that you can use the physical controls of the console, though right stick movement is slippy and carries a strange amount of inertia, no doubt due to the game's touchscreen roots. After the initial levels I found it easiest to play using the left analogue for forwards and backwards momentum as well as strafing motions, and fine aim controlled by sliding my right thumb across the touch screen.

Difficulty was fine for the most part, although the last few levels tested my patience. The final boss too was an exercise in frustration - the boss spawns constant waves of enemies, which brings the latter half of the 7/8 minute battle down to pitiful, single-digit framerates.

If you already own it, give it a play. If you fancy playing it and never picked it up back in the day, you're shit out of luck. The digital future bites.

27. Memories Off 6: Complete (Vita) - Beaten: 31/03/18 - Time Taken: ~6 hours (All Trophies [PSN])

I picked up this Japanese language title in a bundle of other games that I won on eBay late one night - I have a terrible habit of making low-ball offers on buy-it-now lots just before falling asleep and sometimes end up with a bunch of dross I really didn't need or really want when I wake up in the morning.

I found a guide a couple years back that walked through this game in its entirety, signposting when to save, when to load, and which dialogue choices to pick to progress the story through to 100% completion. It's taken me a good while to get through this, just half and hour here and there, but it's finally done, platinum trophy and all. Even though I had no idea what the content of the individual storylines were, I quite enjoyed creating my own narrative to play over the fantastic character art.

28. Goosebumps (PS4) - Beaten: 31/03/18 - Time Taken: ~6-7 hours (All Trophies [PSN])

Honestly not sure what's stranger. That Goosebumps as a license held any stock whatsoever as late as 2015; that its videogame adaptation was a single screen adventure game in the Shadowgate / Deja Vu tradition; or that it was developed by WayForward Technology.

The game itself is perfectly serviceable, though not anywhere near as knowing or clever as the film that released around the same time. It is however a fun enough romp across which lasted a decent four or so hours to finish (I played co-operatively with my partner, bumbling through some of the more trial and error puzzle solutions together), before I sat with a guide for a few hours to mop up the remainder of the trophies for finishing the game in a limited number of moves or manipulating / interacting with items and objects in ways which called back to early Goosebumps books.

29. Resistance: Burning Skies (Vita) - Beaten: 03/04/18 - Time Taken: ~5-6 hours (All Trophies [PSN])

D'ya remember when Sony was actively supporting the Vita and attempting to make good on their promise of the fabled AAA-game on a handheld thing?

Even though Burning Skies didn't set the world ablaze critically, playing it now, several years after release, it's impressive just how much of a the big console experience Nihilistic manage to cram into this portable campaign. Presentation is ace, especially considering this was a relatively early release for the little handheld that could, and despite being a pretty bog-standard, linear FPS, I really enjoyed the 5 or so hours it took to play through.

30. Gryphon Knight Epic (PS4) - Beaten: 07/04/18 - Time Taken: ~15 hours (All Trophies [PSN])

A shmup with absolutely none of the finesse we now expect from the genre. There are story elements, 'ship' and 'option' upgrades, simple exploration, and a range of difficulty options. Yet the game is both made and let down by its art style: huge chunky bitmap pixel art that makes hitboxes larger than they should be, scrolling a constant tear-fest owing to the massive background art, and, most jarringly for me at least, a resolution that is stretched to fill an HD screen that has not been scaled by integer.

Remember how everyone shits on Symphony of the Night for the Saturn for stretching pixels along one of its axis from its Playstation port? This whole game is like that, with all the delicate line work that has gone into the cartoony characters, enemies and incidental art, sullied by a really poor optimisation choice.

The platinum trophy was a decent challenge asking me to beat the game on all three difficulties, without upgrading or changing weapon from the difficult gun, and besting the game in under 2 hours. Some unlock conditions were a bit hit and miss meaning that I probably finished the whole game two more times than necessary, but overall, I can say I enjoyed my time with GKE, even if it's unlikely I'll ever go back to it.

31. Soul Dimension (PSVR) - Beaten: 10/04/18 - Time Taken: ~45mins (All Trophies [PSN])

I'm not great with 'scary' games, and its unfortunate that so many VR titles fit into the 'jump scare the player into oblivion' mould of design. Soul Dimension is the first title in an episodic series (though one that looks very unlikely to ever see its follow up chapters given the relative silence of the developer post-release), and despite doing its best to offer a creepy atmosphere with its abandoned house setting (not dissimilar to P.T. in setup), I managed to play through it largely without issue.

The game looks great for an indie title, although sound design leaves a lot to be designed, with voice actors making rookie errors like shouting too loudly into their mics causing noticeable distortion. Puzzles are very straight forward, run time is very short, but I feel it should be commended for its locomotion choice: the player moves forward and backwards, as well as strafes using the left stick, and then uses the right stick to first point in the direction they want the camera to face, before clicking in R3 to lock in their choice and snap the camera in that direction. It's a nice change from traditional FPS controls which can cause a bit of motion sickness in people, as well as the snap turning which always makes centring your view at a specific angle challenging.

I'd be keen to play the next chapters, but, as I said, they seems unlikely at this stage to materialise. For the current paltry price of entry though I don't feel too hard done by seeing it as a stand alone experience even if the developer clearly had more to say with their narrative.

32. Parappa the Rapper: Remastered (PS4) - Beaten: 11/04/18 - Time Taken: ~3-4 hours (All Trophies [PSN])

I love Parappa. The art and sound design is still impeccable 20-odd years after its release, but it sure could use, nay deserves, some QoL adjustments.

Remember on the PSX when the timing windows were, shall we say, tight? Well at least you knew as a player that everyone was experiencing the same thing given the levelling quality of the CRT and its consistent, fixed refresh. With TVs now as varied as they are it's positively criminal that a rerelease like this wouldn't include some sort of lag adjustment / calibration.

Passing some levels has become a chore, with the process of achieving 'cool' now an exercise in frustration. The platinum trophy is achievable, sure, but more by luck than judgement: something you should never be able to say about a rhythm action game, no matter its age or pedigree.

33. Nelson Tethers: Puzzle Agent (PS3) - Beaten: 11/04/18 - Time Taken: ~4 hours (All Trophies [PSN])

The Playstation 3 is easily my least loved console. Looking at my shelves, I have around 300 Xbox 360 games and maybe 20 PS3 discs. Digital is similar, with my XBLA library maybe 30 times the size of my PSN library from that generation. Digging through my digital backlog this evening I found Puzzle Agent, a game I remember vaguely as being a Layton-style adventure game but developed by Telltale.

Firstly, the good: I really dig the artwork, the voice acting, and the Lynchian vibe the whole game gives off. The story itself was hugely enjoyable throughout, and since the sequel appears to carry on from the first, I may give it a go later in the year on my iPhone if its ageing battery will allow me to run the app.

And so to the bad: the interface (at least when played with a Dualshock on the PS3) is attrocious. Puzzles are frequently made several times more difficult than they need to be, purely because selecting options or items is so painfully unintuitive. Similar to Layton, the difficulty of individual puzzles spikes all over the place with some taking seconds to solve, needing no more than a quick glance, and others needing pen and paper, and a serious head for complex logic. Maybe I'm just a bit dense, but around half way through the game I pretty much gave up on solving puzzles logically and proceeded either by brute force or walkthrough - it was the narrative I was after at this stage, not the ability to get stumped on one of those awful 'which statements contradict which?' type word puzzles.

34. Fragment's Note: After Stories (iOS) - Beaten: 12/04/18 - Time Taken: ~6 hours (All Endings)

A direct sequel to Fragment's Note that I finished a few weeks back. Had no real intention of playing another VN, let alone a sequel to one I thought was pretty sub-par so soon, but driving home from a wedding up the country (I was the passenger, obviously!) it seemed like a decent way to pass the time.

The previous title was very light on dialogue choices, and this sequel dispenses with them altogether outside of the starting screen which asks you to choose the girl you romanced in Fragment's Note. I played through each story, and felt that although the writing (or perhaps just the translation?) is stronger here, it's still nothing to shout about.

35. Late Shift (PS4) - Beaten: 12/04/18 - Time Taken: ~5 hours (All Trophies [PSN])

A modern FMV game. A synopsis to strike fear into all who read it. Except, it's actually pretty decent?

What's remarkable about Late Shift is how seldom you really see the seams. It is, for all intents and purposes, just like an old Choose Your own Adventure book or Fighting Fantasy novel, but the above average performances from *most* of the main cast, a remarkably high production budget for a title that I can't imagine sold that well, and the feeling that your decisions can carry genuine narrative weight (even if on subsequent plays you notice that paths often reconverge a few scenes on) makes it a bloody enjoyable romp through its Guy Ritchie style London crime caper.

There is genuine tension in certain scenes, some well written dialogue (though also some stinkers - the opening monologue was almost enough to make me stop playing the first time through), and a decent amount of entertainment to be had, especially when playing with friends and shouting through choices during the slim decision windows the game affords you.

Also, (whisper it now), but it's a hell of a lot better than Hidden Agenda.

Played through two full legit games, then mopped up trophies using a guide.

36. Back to the Future: The Game (PS3) - Beaten: 13/04/18 - Time Taken: ~12 hours (All Trophies [PSN])

More like Back to the PS3 Backlog, eh?

It's an early Telltale game, so expect more puzzles and less choices, an often recycled cast of characters and locations, audio visual glitches, but a mostly enjoyable experience. Some puzzles were great: classic point and click item based solutions that made sense. Some were not so great: repetitious back and forth affairs that grew tedious to execute way before their resolution.

37. Squareboy vs Bullies: Arena Edition (PS4 + Vita) - Beaten: 13/04/18 - Time Taken: ~5 hours (All Trophies x2 [PSN])

Double platinum again.

I like side scrolling brawlers. Streets of Rage 2 is up there with my favourites of all time. Squareboy, perhaps unsurprising, is unlikely to make the cut. The move set is surprisingly varied, though often the controls can let you down meaning you just resort to some simple but effective moves like the dash to cheese your way through almost every encounter.

On my first Vita play through I thought that space management ('zoning' I guess?) was the most important skill to learn when playing this game, as it seemed absolutely vital to your survival. Getting cornered by two or more enemies pretty much meant instant death if one lands a hit, as your character has no invincibility frames whatsoever. The final stage in particular took many attempts as I kept getting combo-ed into oblivion by groups of enemies who staggered their attacks, thus taking away any opportunities for me to escape.

On my PS4 play through, I suddenly realised that pressing attack and jump together when stuck in a group of enemies pulls of a classic 'desperation move' yet costs no life penalty. This meant I absolutely pissed the run through the game without a single death. No idea how I missed this on the Vita, but it at least made my second go a bit quicker than the first.

38. Pixel Gear (PSVR) - Beaten: 13/04/18 - Time Taken: ~5 hours (All Trophies [PSN])

One of the first VR titles I got with my headset, Pixel Gear is a basic wave shooter that stands out from the crowd because of its fantastically accurate Playstation Move tracking. Seriously, this feels better than some games that are compatible with the Aim controller.

I'd beaten pretty much the full thing and uninstalled it, but realising I was just a few trophies away from a Platinum, I gave it another hour or so and unlocked the last few tasks I'd left outstanding.

Lots of people whined when Limited Run Games announced Pixel Gear as their first physical VR release, but I honestly think it's a standout indie title on the platform and deserves more recognition than it got at PSVR's launch.

39. 36 Fragments of Midnight (PS4 + Vita) - Beaten: 16/04/18 - Time Taken: ~2-3 hours (All Trophies x2 [PSN])

A procedurally generated speedrun punisher platformer that uses the now passé 'Limbo' artstyle. Performs like an absolute dog on Vita, but is buttery smooth and a real joy to control on PS4. Kinda reminded me of the type of platform games that you'd get on the ZX Spectrum that would randomise key item placement, give you a tight time limit to beat the game, and then really test your patience by making every enemy and obstacle a one hit kill.

40. A Way Out (PS4) - Beaten: 30/04/18 - Time Taken: ~9 hours (All Trophies [PSN])

Well I wasn't expecting that. It's a co-op only narrative game based around two guys breaking out of prison in order to track down a mutual enemy.part way through the game I felt myself questioning how necessary the co-op mechanic was as it often seemed to be reduced to ''be in the same place at the same time to open a door", but later scenes really make good on the game's promise. The final act in particular only works because of all preceeding scenes, and let me tell you, it is brutal.

Go in cold, and if possible, play in old school couch co-op mode. Recommended.

Games #41 onwards

I'm not going to make it this year. I just don't have the energy or interest in gaming I once had, among other things. Depression sucks. But I'll still see what I can do and update, and am happy that I made it last year and would've made it every year of the last decade.

Good luck to everyone.

11. Tekken 7 (4 hours)
I can't speak much to the quality of the gameplay, as I've only played for 4 hours, it seems quite complex, and the game has no tutorial to speak of. What I can say is that while the game does seem fun, the game's story mode is a piece of work. It pales in comparison from a narrative standpoint even to Capcom's recent story modes, and the difficulty is cranked surprisingly high, enough so that I'm seeing even fighting game regulars online telling people to play on easy (I played on medium). I'm not done with this game, though, and I expect to get many more hours of enjoyment and experience from the character stories and the arcade mode.

Game #38 - Slay The Spire
Time: 20 hours

What a colossal disapointment, especially after coming out of Monster Slayers earlier which I absolutely loved, and all the hype that StS had. At it's core there is a fantastic game here, that is absolutely ruined (in my opinion of course, and we'll get back to that) by the most ridiculous difficulty spikes and unbalanced gameplay I have ever seen in a card game I think. In my opinion (again, this is my opinion), this rivals any pay to win game of its kind, and in fact seems to be made for it, but there are no p2w systems, you are completely dependant on both card and relic (think of it as equipment) RNG, both during gameplay and via the card drops to build your deck. The problem is, some bosses complete negate some decks, and there are a couple of bosses in particular that negate any deck and are just completely overtuned (again, in my opinion). It feels unfair, and that isnt fun. Hard games are fine, unfair games not so much, and in the end I just dont have fun with the game, I dont anticipate the next run as you would in one of these games. And that is a damn shame as I love the genre and again, at its core the mechanics are solid, if they ever tune down the difficulty or at least change some mechanics. Also there are only 2 classes (aka 2 decks) with 1 more promissed and that is just very low for a card game. It's still in early access so we'll see what happens and I'll still get back to it, probably regularly even since it's still a good time waster at work, but I felt the time I spent with it (I unlocked everything for both classes) was enough to write my thoughts here. Man, what a bummer this was.

10. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
I had that one in backlog for some time but waited for the right moment or something. Also, I purchaced a headset just for this game and it didn't dissapoint. Pretty damn scary story. Loved every single bit of it. Well, maybe not long battles.
Haven't experienced anything like it and overall it's been a while since I felt something strong for videogame. Last one was The Last of Us. Deffo go play it if you still haven't.

11. SteamWorld Dig 2
Nothing really to talk about here. I've decided to play it since I saw it in library but overall first one was better. Story seemed meh, gameplay was okay.

15. Shadow of the Colossus (PS4) [15/03/18 - 16/03/18]
o6HpspA.jpg

5 hours, 32 minutes. 9/10 (while the original is a 10/10)

Shadow of the Colossus on the PS2 is one of my favourite games of all time, and easily one of the best ever made. The adoration I have for the original means that I can't help but have some mixed feelings when it comes to this version. I'm generally against the idea of a completely separate team remaking such a landmark game.

This isn't like Mikami deciding to remake Resident Evil and push it closer to his original vision; this is somebody else altogether coming in and giving us their interpretation of the original game. And the purist in me really dislikes some of the liberties BluePoint have taken with it. I'm sure this is probably an even more unpopular opinion, but I feel making the world so much more lush and beautiful gives the game a very different tone than the original, and I don't believe it's for the better. You can argue that the only reason the original game's world was so sparse and lifeless is because of technical limitations (and that may very well be true) but...no matter the reason, that's the way I experienced Shadow of the Colossus back in 2006, and it's honestly how I prefer it.

With all of that said...there's no denying that this is a great game. I don't think it's anywhere near as important, impressive or even as visually interesting as the original, but there was always going to be a pretty high floor when it comes to a new version of Shadow of the Colossus.

10. Kirby: Star Allies (Switch) (Around 5 Hours) (3/5)
As a big Kirby fan I was looking forward to this and after finishing it, I feel kind of disappointed? But also kind of not? Kirby Star Allies is a short game, and that's my biggest gripe. There's only 4 worlds in total with a varying amount of levels in each, levels have a gimmick that is usually skipped over pretty quickly. The game's presentation isn't amazing and doesn't feel like a grand adventure like a console Kirby game should. While you look at something like Kirby's model and think it's great, you look at King Dedede's and it's just unappealing. It's a mixed bag but at times can have visual treats. The soundtrack is amazing, particularly in the final boss, which is one of the best in the Kirby series. New abilities aren't very memorable, but some of the friend abilities are fun and unique. Having played through Planet Popstar with co-op, I can say co-op is fun! The friend abilities introduced in the game as well as the ability to make friends with usually generic enemies are fun additions and help the game stick out. The bosses are some real standouts. Whether it's buff Dedede, the final boss or even Whispy Woods, they all do something unique and fun.

While having many letdowns, Kirby Star Allies in the late game remains fun and cute, just like a Kirby game should be.

I did not enjoy this game much mainly because of how 1:1 a lot of the things in the game were made. The 3D graphics are OK, but aren't properly utilized as at the end of the day this is just Secret of Mana/Seiken 2 but with 3D graphics.
At least the music was great.

#22 #WarGames (PC) | 1.7h | March 17 | ★★

Sam Barlow's new game and after playing Her Story I was really excited for this one. Sadly it couldn't live up to my expectations. I knew what kind of "gameplay" I should expect, less than in a Telltale game, but even for an interactive movie there was just not enough to do. It felt like there was very little you could do to influence the decisions and hence the story. It didn't help that the story itself is quite bland and illogical at times. With games like this I usually do a second playthrough with different choices but I don't think I'll play it ever again.

Overall - 9 | What seems mundane at first turns into a genius stroke in story.
Gameplay - 7.75 | The games style is unique in how it presents the characters and text.
Sound - 9 | Its not an "Epic" soundtrack, but it creeps into your everyday life while not playing.
Story/Online - 10 | I have not played a video game like it to date. Its characters and arch where unexpected
Asking Price- 8.33 | The games true value is its lasting appeal. Bought the next two games in the series.

If you took Silent Hill 2, flipped it sideways, and made a freaky ass paper doll aesthetic, you'd have Detention. A harrowing tale of pain and despair that is guaranteed to leave you emotionally drained at the end. My only complaint is that the puzzles can be a bit obtuse.

Overall - 6 | As a fan of the Lego games, I was not a fan of this entry
Gameplay - 6.6 | We both did not enjoy this Lego game. To many pop ups, world design was poor

Sound - 7 | Not bad, not memorable.
Story/Online - 7 | Story follows movie, awkward as they have to put movie clips & gameplay disjointedly

Overall - 10 | Absolute gem and one of the greatest games I have ever played
Gameplay - 9.2 | Bluepoint did a amazing job recreating this game. Colossus are all incredible and unique

Sound - 10 | Not sure how it was in the original, but the sound is another character in this game.
Story/Online - 9 | The story is subtle, but is told without words. The world & colossus are told beautifully.
Asking Price- 9.33 | Easily worth a pickup and one I could see myself replaying which is rare.

The game does the opposite of almost any I have played before. Instead of being an overpowerful character, you are reminded through the experience that you are small.

1. Witcher 3 [PS4]
Played this off and on for years. Made sure it was the first thing I would complete this year. I will go back to do the expansions at some point later, so it feels fresh. Played it on Deathmarch difficulty so I had to be methodical with the combat. Loved the world, characters and gwent.

2. Wolfenstein: The Old Blood [PS4]
Decided to finally go through this game so that I wouldn't feel guilty about playing Wolfenstein II. It was short and sweet game and I really liked how a pipe became such an important weapon throughout.

3. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus [PS4]
It's surprising how much Wolf 2 made you care about BJ. Some of the best moments in all of gaming but the combat was tedious especially on a controller. Once I hit a certain section of the game I found I cared more about getting to the story moments than actually playing. So, I turned the difficulty all the way down and actually had a blast just being overpowered.

4. PUBG [PC]
I played a significant chunk of time on this game and on the map Miramar. I will return to it once hackers are better addressed and some improvements are done to the overall performance. After playing for a while I started really hating the mechanics of the blue circle for just how quickly it would kill you if you got stuck outside for just a few seconds towards the end.

5. Doki Doki Literature Club [PC]
A great free game that I think was a tad bit overhyped. The game does not do a great job making seeing the other routes easy. I overall enjoyed what the game does and that's all I can really say.

6. Rise of the Tomb Raider (03/17) [PS4]
Great visuals and puzzle-platforming. The collectibles seem to be a waste of time and the shooting felt really off to me at times. The story was all over the place and doesn't end on a high note either.

header.jpg

7. Portal 2 (3/18) [PC]
Sequels that take the core of the original and improve on it are always so good. The clever use of all the mechanics new and old make this game a true masterpiece, and that's not even taking into account the humor.

Although it's a short game, the last couple of chapters made me just want to get it over with. Ending your game with an escort mission is not a good idea, especially when the game also ramps up the action at the same time from a very deliberate and ponderous pace to constant run and gun action. Despite the very weak ending, i still enjoyed it.

The story is cliché and has one of those eye rolling twists that you can see coming a mile away but it mostly doesn't get in the way. Dialogue is juvenile and the voice acting made me wish i was playing a mute character. The environmental storytelling is where the game shines though. The world is filled with little details that take you back to when things went really wrong. The atmosphere also adds to the world building and it makes the game worth playing for these reasons alone.

I wish the game had a couple more chapters and a few more opportunities for shooting zombies as it was actually satisfying but what was there was alright.

As a special note, i wish creators in general just got over this annoying trend of using sexual violence upon women as a lame crutch to make us want to care. Just stop it.

Joining y'all mostly in spirit after realizing I haven't finished any videogame in forever.

Gorogoa ★★★★

Beautiful & inventive panel-based puzzler. Anytime it would seem to have run dry, it would piece things together in an entirely fresh way, very literally turning perspective on its head. Greatly enjoyed this, sometimes the smallest concepts are also the most fruitful.

GTA V ★★★

Many great big moments here and characters to love. Mostly a replay although I had only missed the last few missions the first time. Could have been better as just a Michael game I thought - that's how I played it - as characters that mostly further his story and his goals.

Minit ★★★

Charming bite-sized Zelda, a minute at a time. Respects and rewards your time more than anything. I adore it.

Can't say it was bad, but overall pretty mediocre DLC. Predictable story, new puzzle with ropes that more frustrating than interesting, and final boss was kinda meh. Forgettable DLC that can be easily skipped if you didn't liked original game much, but might be worth trying for fans.

16. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice [18/03/18 - 18/03/18]
6RWtVc9.jpg

~7 hours. 8.5/10

Really enjoyed this. The combat was simple but satisfying, and the puzzles were...well they did outstay their welcome in sections tbh, but for the most part they were interesting, different, and very nicely tied into the theme. Where this game truly shines though is in the presentation, story and especially the performances. I was so sucked in that I finished the game in one sitting. That doesn't happen often. It's definitely not going to be a story for everyone - it's far from traditional and mildly ambiguous in parts - but I found it to be fresh and really well executed.

My main nitpick is that Dillion's actor seems horrendously out of place. I have no issue with the video method in general (Druth was great), but Dillion looks like he's stepped off of a catwalk and onto the set, with neatly trimmed facial hair and a modern haircut. No idea what they were thinking here.
It was so out of place that I actually considered right at the end (after seeing in one of the final cutscenes that Dillion also had rune tattoos on his forearm) that none of what I had been seeing was real, and the game was going to close with the revelation that Senua is actually a girl in the modern day mourning her dead lover.

Highly recommended. Wear headphones.

05. BULLET SOUL (Steam, 2018/02/19, 4 hours)

This bullet hell SHMUP let's you have your cake and eat it too. The scoring is straight forward and uncomplicated. The bullet readability is excellent. The dodging difficulty ramps up slowly, gets challenging, but is never unfair. Hostile bullets cancel out once their originating shooter is eliminated. This provides a strategic gameplay element: stand your ground, kill the biggest bullet spammer first or zip around like a hummingbird within the bullet hell to kill every last formation. There's a lot of content in form of 4 modes, 3 default ships and a bonus reward character for 1CCing/looping the game. I've managed to 1CC BULLET SOUL, which automatically adds it to my "best STG ever" list.

06. Wolfenstein: The Old Blood (PS4, 2018/02/25, two DS4 charges)

The follow up, standalone, prequel was a bit weaker than The New Order. The emotional impact of the story wasn't quite up to par. Setting, gunplay and level design delivered though. I had a good old bloody Nazi killing time.

07. Trouble Witches Origin DLC Character Pack (Steam, 2018/03/11, 5 hours)

Four new characters were added as paid DLC. What a nice excuse to revisit this awesome horizontal SHMUP. The core story remains the same, but each new character adds its own spin. The voice acting, writing and humor are all as good as the baseline offering. The gameplay variation is also noteworthy. The new girls offer different shooting patterns. Their strong points are countered with a certain weakness to keep them balanced. This DLC shows, how it's done.

08. JUDGEMENT SILVERSWORD - Resurrection - (Steam, 2018/03/18, 14.5 hours)

I've played this SHMUP on and off for a couple of years now. Finally managed to clear it. The game is a wee bit too fast for my taste, but it's still manageable. It being a WonderSwan Color port is really crazy, I have no idea how people played this on a tiny handheld with just a d-pad. The Steam re-release is really something, 4K support for a game that was originally 224x144, lol. TATE mode was also included. I've enjoyed this 16bit throwback a lot.

12. Life Is Strange: Before the Storm - Farewell (3/14/18, 1hr)

It was nice to see Max and Chloe together again, but...I dunno. Something seemed off with Max, like, voice or modelling wise, and I found it really distracting the entire way through. It was really good to watch the pair get to interact once more, though, and I feel like it was a really strong send off for the pair. Though, I think the other ending might have given me more feels, than the one I got, given what happens in the future...

13. Night in the Woods (3/18/18, 7hrs)

I'd heard really good things about this game, and, I'm so glad it was recommended to me so many times, because, the main 4 leads, I absolutely love. When the game shifted gears in later chapters away from the stories of your friends, I have to admit, I was disappointed, and while I liked the -concept- of the ending, I'm not entirely sure I liked the execution. I'd also have liked the chance to get to know Angus better. But, that's probably because I identified with him the most of the cast. Eeeeeeeeeels, Resetera. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeels

15. Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon - 3DS
Completed 3/16/18
Score - 9/10
My wife got me a 3DS for my birthday this year. I know I am really lttp on this...but better late than never. Luigi's Mansion was always one of my favorites on the Gamecube, just always felt it was too short. Dark Moon makes up for the originals short length and I really enjoyed it. I liked the different Mansions and found it to be quite funny at times. Luigi's facial expressions are fantastic! I never really cared about the 3D aspect and I always used to just pass on the 3DS and not care. Since playing this, I found it to be a pretty cool feature in the game. I know it's going to be hit and miss with 3D games going forward, but this was a great first game on the system (again, many years late)

16. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX - 3DS
Completed 3/18/18
Score - 9/10
Played this when I was 16 years old on my new Gameboy Color and loved it back then. When I saw I could get it on the 3DS eshop, it was an instabuy. I loved playing through the game all over again. I remember many things and forgot plenty more. I searched out all of the heart containers and earned the Seashell Sword. Some of the trading quest is confusing on figuring out where to go next...so no shame in using a guide on that stuff. The game really holds up well and is still one of my favorite Zelda games.

#14 Chrono Trigger - 9 DS - March 20th - 20 hours
Chrono Trigger pretty much does everything very well. The sprites and animation are great, the soundtrack has some great tracks like Frog's Theme, the techs keep the battle system interesting throughout the game, I like how each character has moves that can interact with every other character. I also like how the NPC dialogue changes based on your time travelling antics, especially in the side quests which were probably my favourite part.

6: Counter Spy (9/3/2018) ★★★★
This game is a masterpiece that deserves to be played, the style, the music, and tone is great. Not to mention the gameplay feels great. I really recommend it and urge people to play it, I think it's on sale in the European PSN right now and you should grab it and get the online trophy before the servers go down if you are about them. It is very easy to get this trophy so don't wory about grinding or anything, as the game is two hours long but has tons of replayability.

7: Grand Theft Auto 4 (13/3/2018) ★★★★
I replayed this game after itching for it for a long time and to be honest? The game was even better than I remember. The missions were much better than GTA5 simply because they weren't as scripted and some missions can be done in different way. The shooting physics were also much more satisfying because they had great crisp sound design and were weighty. And who could forget the car mechanics which were amazing and very fun to master, shame it got replaced with the how wheels physics in GTA5. Another thing I noticed were the friends calling you which I feel was too harshly criticized as they don't call you much and calling friends could bgive you missions like drug dealing and many different things which add alot to do in the game. The only big negative and why it brought down the score was the movement system which while weighty isn't fun and needs getting used to.
8: Grand Theft Auto 4 The Lost & Damned (15/3/2018) ★★★★
This is still one of the best dlc's and feel very different to Niko's story. Johnny is a criminal who doesn't really care about human life and screws over people which brings him problems and that makes for some interesting and cool moments. Mission design is much more varied in this DLC and the bike mechanics are much more improved and more fun since you don't fall from your bike as easily. There is a lot more content in the game and more fun side activities like a Road Rash style bike racing as activity or working for a politician who sends you on different missions which are very fun. There is also gang wars and more minigames in the club. There is also very fun weapons introduced in the dlc like the double barreled shotgun which you can use on bikes and it makes things very satisfying, there are also an auto shotty and a grenade launcher which are very fun and an auto pistol and pipe grenades. Over all the dlc makes things much more fun and interesting and to those that complained about the phone, they don't call you now and instead you need to call friends I'd you want to hang out.

Before I played this game, I thought it would be a story driven RPG with platforming elements, but it's more like a story driven open world game with a lot of cool side quests and a nice main story. Maybe a bit predictable but it doesn't really matter to me. Immediately fell in love with the protagonist and really liked the way your decisions shaped the outcome of the side quests. I wasn't a fan of the combat in the beginning but after leveling up the melee skill and getting the hang of dodging, it was fun. Firearms didn't click at all tho. The game also did a thing near the end that really annoyed me, but the actual ending made me forgive the game for it.

Game #54: Event[0]
Started 12 Mar. 2018 - Completed 12 Mar. 2018
Verdict: A fun idea that didn't really work for me.

I loved the idea of having to interact with an AI that responded to the tone you used. But I guess I should have realised it would be very restricted in what you can actually do. The reason to interact with the AI is to figure out what has happened on the spaceship Nautilus, in the same vein as Gone Home, but the story didn't grab me. I might sound pretty negative now but I didn't have a bad time. It was fine, but it could have been a lot better.

Game #55: Fran Bow
Started 14 Mar. 2018 - Completed 14 Mar. 2018
Verdict: Really, really disturbing and amazingly good.

I thought it couldn't get "worse" than The Cat Lady but this is at least on the same disturbance level, if not a bit above. It's also almost as good in general. It dipped a little in the middle but not enough to detract from the feel of the game being awesome. I absolutely adored Fran and her reactions to everything. I went around and clicked absolutely every single interactable thing only because I wanted to hear her comments. It's a very good point and click and I only got stuck once, mostly because I am a doofus. Not really related to the game, but it was fun to realise the game was not only made by (only two!) swedes but they were also from my little hometown!

Game #56: Grow Home
Started 15 Mar. 2018 - Completed 15 Mar. 2018
Verdict: Very charming and just what I needed.

After playing through dark and f-ed up games like The Cat Lady and Fran Bow, and story/text heavy games like Dex and Event[0], this was a welcomed change of pace. Pretty much no story to speak of and also very bright and forgiving. I loved the climbing controls and as the collectaholic I am the hunt for crystals and the data gathering was great fun. Some of the achievements were a bit annoying and grindy like having to glide for 30 minutes, using a lot of flowers, jumping on mushrooms and trigger altitude warnings. Aside from that I had a lot of fun with this.

Game #57: Hustle Cat
Started 16 Mar. 2018 - Completed 17 Mar. 2018
Verdict: Cute when played through once but doesn't hold up well if you wanna complete it all.

This is a pretty cute dating game that is very LGBTQ-friendly. The character you play looks pretty androgynous and you can choose which pronoun you'd like to go by. The dating part stays on a pretty "tame" level with some cute dates and cuddles at most, which I liked. The game is really nice if you play a single route, but playing them all gets insanely repetitive. Every route (with a single special exception) plays out the exact same way. You go through a part of the game, getting points with the different characters by making a bunch of choices. Then it locks you in with a date and the rest of the game has no choices what so ever. You get to know which one you are gonna end up with at the same point and after that the only difference is some dialogue and the way the final event is solved. Of course you can "fast forward" the dialogue you have already seen, but it's a bit too slow with frequent pauses. The game also crashed frequently.

Game #58: Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon
Started 11 Feb. 2018 - Completed 20 Mar. 2018
Verdict: Old and finicky but has a lot of charm.

I liked the game quite a bit, it's only the second game of this type I play actually. I had never played a Harvest Moon-ish game until I played Stardew Valley. It's very clear now where that game got the inspiration from, but it also made this game feel extremely old. Using items from the inventory is a pain and if you press the wrong button and drop the item instead of consuming it, it is gone forever. It happened a lot. It's also annoying to ship items and add feed to the monster huts, since you have to throw the items in a single square. Miss and the items are gone and wasted. I ended up not using the shipping box and just going to the store and selling everything instead. I was also surprised how farming is basically just a waste of time in this game. It's supposed to be a way to get money I guess but you can pretty much ignore your home farm and go mine in the dungeons for lots and lots of money with way less work involved. The idea behind the name is to set up "Rune Factories" by having fully grown crops in a 3x3 formation, which will produce a rune every day. Runes are used to replenish the rune points that is your energy and that you spend by doing basically anything. This is mostly effective in the dungeons since the seasons do not change in there so the crops can be grown forever, and you can replenish the energy you spend on killing enemies and mining. But it also played a pretty minor role all things considered. But as I said, I did like the game and I will definitely get more Harvest Moon games and the likes.

One of my most beloved games ever that I finally get the chance to return to, though my playthrough was marred by bad audio glitches. Funnily enough, I've never actually done a legit playthrough of the game. I always use the Arrowhead cheat to bypass the grind for the Cobweb Duster.

14. Orwell: Keeping An Eye On You (3/20/18, 3hrs)

I picked up the latest Humble Bundle for this game, it sounded like a really neat premise. You were an investigator for Orwell, a government program that like the name implies, monitors everything through surveillance in order to stop crime. The game has you tracking down the culprits of a bombing attack, by listening in on their calls, reading in on their text messages, remote accessing their computers and phones... And it's up to you to pick and choose the correct evidence to submit. Had one issue with the game crashing, and, some of the dialogue was a little stilted, but, this was well worth the time and money. I'll pick up the sequel, when they've finished releasing all the episodes.

$&%$#^&*&%$&^$#!!

Man, isn't Monika just dreamy~ I'd look into those eyes forever.

Real talk though, I honestly wish I hadn't known going in about this game. It definitely lessened the impact of the hard hits. But, I also read that some things are RNG based, so, perhaps I got good RNG. Kudos to the character of Sayori, for tackling something really uncommon to games, and in a more realistic way than most.

Time for an update!

12. Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix - 03/08
Wanted to play through this before Kingdom Hearts III comes out later this year (fingers crossed). Child me thought this was one of the most amazing games of all time back then, but I didn't like it as much when playing through the Final Mix version. Still a good game, but I find myself critiquing it a lot more this time. Can't say I'm really a fan of the gummi ships or episode structure for the worlds, but the core combat is still really good.

13. Steins;Gate 0 - 03/12
This is an interesting sequel that is a bit rougher around the edges than its predecessor. Feels like it could use an epilogue to reflect on the events of the game more. Fans of the series should play it even though it doesn't quite reach the heights of the original.

14. Phantasy Star Online 2: Episode 2 - 03/14
A lot of cool bosses and zones were added in this expansion of the game as well as the katana/bow wielding Braver class. Really liked how the story played out and is probably the best arc of the episodes that I've currently played.

15. Kirby: Star Allies - 03/18
Played through this with three friends over the weekend and had a blast doing it, but I don't know that I would enjoy playing through it very much solo. Its fairly easy, and the levels are pretty mediocre for the most part, but coordinating with other people to swap and combine powers is neat. The last few levels and finale are very well done, though. It's a shame that the whole game isn't like that. Would also like to shout-out that despite their simplicity, the minigames are a blast to play with friends, maybe more-so than the main game.

16. Phantasy Star Online 2: Episode 3 - 03/20
This expansion adds Japanese-themed zones and bosses. Also new is the Bouncer class which is a Jet Boots and Dual Blades class, which I actually think is probably the most fun class to play in the game when using the boots. It's a very aerial-based class that has unique movement options. This episode also wraps up most of the plot-lines introduced in episodes 1 and 2 and gives a pretty satisfactory ending to the game. Sega could have probably just ended the game here and it wouldn't have felt like a cop-out.

Up next:
I'm continuing to play through Valkyria Chronicles Remastered with some friends, but since we are doing it together it's gonna be a while before we finish it.
Ni no Kuni II comes out this weekend which I'm excited to jump right into. The main thing I didn't like about the first one was the combat and that looks so much better already just from the small amount I've seen in trailer.
I'll also probably start on Detective Pikachu sometime next week.

Overall - 9 | You would be hard press to find a funner game than Bayonetta 2. Improves on 1 in every way
Gameplay - 9.6 | Seriously one of the most fluid games I have ever played with a ton of enemies.
Sound - 8 | Fairly good soundtrack & gameplay sounds
Story/Online - 8 | Its wacky, but works well. The band of characters while crazy are interesting.
Asking Price- 8.67 | Very much enjoyed this game and going back on a harder difficulty shortly!

Only 7 hours? It took me 12 to finish my first run.
Glad you enjoyed it. Great stuff.

19. Assassin's Creed Origins (XB1)
Completed: 3/2018
Time: 35 hours
Rating: 10/10

I really loved this game. The world and setting constructed is absolutely amazing. Yes, there are still some Ubisoft open-world cookie cutter elements to it, but damn, it was still a blast. My favorite game I've played so far this year.

20. Megaman 10 (XB1)
Completed: 3/2
Time: 2 hours
Rating: 8/10

It's classic Megaman with different robots/powers. Not much else to say

21. Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped (PS4)
Completed: 3/12
Time: 4-5 hours
Rating: 8/10

Completed the third legs of the Crash trilogy. This one was the most fun IMO. Definitely the easiest.

22. Salt and Sanctuary (Vita)
Completed: 3/12
Time: ? No idea I had the Vita in suspend mode a lot and the game has me logged in >200 hours lol
Rating: 9/10

I love Soulsbourne games and this truly is a 2D version. It has it own takes on the "genre" that is a bit hit or miss but still a great experience and any Soulsbourne fan should play

23. Mass Effect (Xb1)
Completed: 3/15
Time: 16 hours
Rating: 9/10

I had barely played this when it first came out. Yet another reason why BC is great; I finallly was able to play through this game and was well worth it. I look forward to trying the other 2 games later on.

24. South Park Stick of Truth (PS4)
Completed: 3/21
Time: 10 hours?
Rating: 9/10

The combat in the game was simple, but damn if this game isn't fun (and funny) as heck though. Unlocking some abilities later in the game kinda broke it though as they were way, way OP.

8: Grand Theft Auto 4 The Ballad of Gay Tony(21/3/2018) ★★★
The dlc was good over all but the story and characters really sucked compared to 4 and TLAD. The best characters is Gay Tony and the rest are just garbage. Over all this dlc is the best for having fun as most of the activities and weaponry are great fun. Fight Club, Drug Wars, Parachuting, Trilathon racing, Club Management and the list goes on. Definitely worth playing but I wish they added some of the content to the main game (same goes to TLAD) as they are really awesome.

Game #39 - God of War 3 Remastered
Time: 10 hours

I remember playing this back on PS3 and at the time, weather I was older compared to when I played previous games, maybe I was just in a bad place at the time, but the violece of the game really put me off. I finished it and enjoyed it back then, but always felt of about it. Has that changed eyars later? Not really. It's still a rgeat action game, and quite a meaty one aswell, it felt really big and I especially loved the way the levels looped around near the end almost metroidvania style (but not really), but the franchise's problem (for me anyway) was never mechanical, just the whole concept seems made for angry teenagers and unfortunately the writing goes along with the concept. I just hate the Kratos character (unfortunately because he's one of my favorite characters ever visually) and the whole unending bloodthirsty quest for revenge that basically fucks everyone around him. But, like I said, its still a fantastic action game, super fun to play and much like the Uncharted remasters, still looks absolutely gorgeous and at times if you told me this was a current gen title I would believe you (that PS3 really pumped out some beautiful games huh?), and I'm glad to have played it now because judging from what I've seen of the new game, playing this one just made me more excited for the next, because it seems Kratos at least sounds like an actual human being now and not a cartoon / caricature, and also the gameplay looks so different that I cant help to be excited since I really wasnt looking forward to another game with the same formula (6 games of that was enough in my opinion).

4. Slain! Back from Hell Finished at 3/23/2018 Time: 8 hours

This game is good, the pixel art looks superb. If I have to compare it with another game, it looks and plays like Castlevania IV with much more gore and a more metal soundtrack. The soundtrack was one thing I really enjoyed. It is not as memorable as a Castlevania, but I really liked it. The bosses are hard, you will die a lot, but that is part of the game.

5. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Finished at 3/23/2018 Time: ~140 hours

This is my first Monster Hunter game and I really fell in love with the loot/grind mechanic and the monster hunting. The beginning was very hard for me because Monster Hunter just does not a good job of introducing new players to the series. Once I got in, I was really motivated.
I stopped after some G rank quests because I felt a bit burned out and I had the impression that I have seen the majority of the content. The credits rolled a long time before that point. There are still some monster variants I missed but I don't want to spend so much time on a dated video game with no online functuality. Maybe I will move on to MH4U, I heard there are still people online.

#23 Orwell: Ignorance is Strength (PC) | 4.3h | March 23 | ★★★½

Ignorance is Strength isn't really a sequel to Keeping an Eye On You. The stories take place at the same time, you get the breaking news about the bombings and see some characters you're already familiar with which is a nice detail. But instead of preventing a bombing (or trying to do so) you have to find a missing person which later leads to something bigger. The gameplay is basically more of the same from what I already knew from the first game, I would have liked to see some more new features. Go for it if you liked Season 1. And if you get stuck in Episode 2, don't despair. Other people have had the same issue and there's a thread about on in the Steam discussion page where the dev gives some hints about things one might have missed.

28. Sonic Adventure DX
header.jpg

I'm a little torn on this game as there are elements of it I liked and didn't like. For one thing I liked the separate character structure and the main plot is quite good IMO. The visuals although dated look clean and vibrant, esp. with the Dreamcast restoration mod. Gameplay's a mixed bag for me tbh, and I feel like this is a game taht'd benefit from a fan remake with some QoL updates.

29. D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die Season 1
header.jpg

This was a fun and lovely Adventure game. Gameplay is pretty light and has a QTE mechanic that mainly affects your score points. The game has trademark SWERY whacky characters and personalities which made the experience pretty entertaining.
I'll wait til the end of time for Season 2, but if it ever happens it can just be one chapter that resolves everything and concludes Young's story.
