Granted, you can make a quantity vs. quality argument here... and that's justified. But it's not like this quality threshold bar has been outright abysmal or anything. Certainly not compared to countless other media properties that run themselves into the ground with overexposure. I think they've struck a really nice balance here.

Hmm, I can't imagine G4 being dropped immediately, especially since it's going so well. If it ain't broken, don't fix it!
I can see G5 getting pushed back for improvements and all that good stuff. But I really don't know much about generations for My Little Pony.

I only watched that short once and assumed there was a reason why Pinkie was barefoot that I missed. They really just magically disappear? And yeah, fans assumed Rarity hated crabs, but she's actually going around arming them.

I remember when they aired Friendship Games and Legend of Everfree on the same day as a new episode and I was like, "Why would you do that?!" I'm glad they saw reason and aired the half hour specials during the mid season 7 break.

Though leaks and early airings have messed it up a lot, they have a pretty good release schedule now.

And yeah, it is weird that they're ramping up Equestria Girls so much with G4 ending soon. Plus we're getting some regular pony TV specials. If it wasn't for the leaked emails being from before the Movie came out, I'd suspect G4 ending was in response to the Movie not doing too well.

I can only assume that they intend to continue this system after the reboot. Looking at Hasbro's YouTube channel, pony stuff gets far more views than everything else, including Transformers.

Yeah, I can't think of any other show that does this at this level. Gravity Falls and DuckTales released YouTube shorts, but the amount of content is nothing compared to EQG and these other informational shorts.

This is unprecedented for MLP, so looking back won't help much. Heck, it's unprecedented for a Transformers generation to last this long.

As for why start a new generation if things are going well, there's a lot of small issues that have been building up over time. Audiences respond well to the adventure stories, but things like Twilight being so much more powerful than everyone else, the sheer number of strong allies they have, and the fact that they can't point to a character and say that's the main villain have gotten in the way of that.

They resolved a lot of conflicts between characters early on, leaving less clean space to be mined later. This is something they shored up with Starlight and now the Friendship School, but there's less to do with the Mane Six themselves now and there are a ton of recurring characters to keep track of.

And there are world building decisions that I'm sure they want to take back, such as Celestia playing such a heavy role (meaning she has to be written out when there are threats), earth ponies just being boring compared to the other breeds, and various arbitrary decisions that they have to stick with. Keep in mind that few people from season 1 are still working on the show. It's almost all people who have to stick with decisions they weren't involved in.

While it seems safe to continue the show for a couple more years, certainly more so than I would have thought circa season 3, I think what's going on is that they want a clean slate creatively. I also think higher ups believe the key to getting more mainstream attention is a reboot movie. They certainly have the media infrastructure to handle it better than when G4 started. FiM got big without Hasbro doing much of anything to capitalize on it; imagine if they actually had the capability to produce tie in shorts and had a plan for conventions from the start.

* In a short format, reading Rainbow's memories too makes sense because it's been a week since the last one. In a movie format, it's just redundant.
* Glad to see Twilight completely ignoring Pony Flash continues. I guess he got fired from his Crystal Empire job.
* A forbidden printing contraption is odd, given we know for a fact that they have the printing press, from "Ponyville Confidential".

BTW, in general, I'm glad people besides me are posting videos.

Okay. Looking at the clip again, Celestia actually refers to the contraption as an "archives mechanical catalog." Huh. Would have never thought library catalogs would be designed that way.

Sigma touches on a lot of the big things, but I feel like there's a lot of general issues with Generation 4 that have been festering for a very long time. Stuff like Twilight's (and now Starlight) overpoweredness compared to the rest of the cast as well as her narrative importance really limits their ability to tell grand stories since they pretty much always have to revolve around one or both of them. The general feel of the show has shifted over the years, especially if you talk about from Season 1 to 2 as well as from season 5 on. A lot of things don't make that much sense from a continuity standpoint and it's led to awkward stuff like the MLP movie completely ignoring countless characters' existence because it would make their story not make any sense. Also been said before but there's a lot of problems that are inherent with the fact that the staff currently working on the show is almost entirely different from the one working on it during the early seasons. Most of these issues are things I'm personally easily willing to overlook because they're almost unavoidable but starting over from scratch would help a lot with those issues.

When she leaves for the cones, she's wearing her crab costume, which includes sandals. When she's at the stand getting the cones, she's barefoot in her normal swimsuit.

Aside from Gloriosa, (duh) the rest of the Mane 7 mention him a couple times, but it's almost always in the context of pointing out that SciTwi has a crush on him.

Watched it, skipping through to the major changes.

I assumed "Most Likely to be Forgotten" was just the name of part 1, but it looks like that was the intended name of this entire story. Though the YouTube title for this story is "Sunset Shimmer Saga", with this part called "Homecoming".

A comment in ED's article mentions there's an additional scene of them going down stairs to the forbidden section, and some shots generally linger for longer throughout.

Wow, Flash looks bored out of his mind in front of the library. He really did get fired! Indeed, Twilight doesn't even notice him. And he's so forgettable that the animators forgot he's a pegasus.

And yeah, the device in question is just a catalogue, and doesn't appear to be forbidden in and of itself.

I feel this is even becoming a bit of a problem. Originally, they had a lot unknowns (like the everfree forrest) but now to capture the same feeling, they have to introduce more and more stuff.

About the hiatuses, season 3 was pretty bad, but the break between seasons 4 and 5 was even bigger. I suppose we did get Rainbow Rocks and the tie in shorts during that break, though.

I think magical objects are a natural consequence of having more adventure stories, and Daring Do in particular.

About the supplemental videos, there's actually a behind the scene video.

Bunch of stuff today. First of all, more Belle Eve 2.0 art from Myke! This time in his normal style.

It looks like the Discovery Family app will be putting show clips up early too. Here's a song from the season premiere.

They also put up two animatics (1, 2). I think this is a pretty interesting way to preview episodes, giving you a hint of what's to come without it being the final product, while also showing you how things are behind the scenes.

And we have a guest star! Rachel Bloom, who starred in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and various, uh, not child friendly online cartoons.

Lastly, I was planning on going for "Twilight Sparkle's Animal House" for the season 8 thread subtitle, but a new contender popped up.

Now I have to say that yes the inconsistencies are a bit bizarre, especially when the kids can point them out. Hasbro's media division has grown (though seeing The Hub become Discovery Family again is a bit weird) and I'm sure if the first movie of G5 goes well we'll see more of that. And preferably have a distributor that isn't Lionsgate lol

Interested in seeing what the team will take from G4 and how they'll better G5, like not having an all-powerful alicorn rule the land.

Semehammer has a ton of great art like that, and it's a shame she stopped posting images publicly; her last image on DeviantArt was in 2014 and her Tumblr is gone. She straight up has my favorite Twilight humanization.

I imagine you probably have a pretty different perspective given that you got into the show relatively recently but I've been watching since season 2 and at this point I feel like 9 seasons and a movie is plenty. It's a really good run for any kind of show. Moving on to G5 I think one of the big advantages they have is to be able to see what worked with G4 and what was causing them problems as the show went on and be able to make changes accordingly.

I think most people are a bit worried, but at this point I've been following the show for 7 or so years so a shakeup has me excited.

I'm also looking forward to having G4 end and make way for something new. (Haven't seen any G5 spoilers/leaks and avoiding S8 spoilers so can't comment on that. ) They've tied up pretty much all major plot points by now. Even moved focus to Starlight and friends (which happens to be not as interesting for me).

I thought that thing was a card catalogue. So you could use it to search and find index card but not really print new ones. And presumably the Ponyville printing presses are recent unlike this one.

There are two things that can stop an artist from making MLP art: losing interest in the show/fandom, or simply not having enough free time. The fact that art stopped on her DeviantArt altogether points toward the latter. I don't know her situation, but it's likely she was in high school / college while she was an active fan artist. After getting a job, she probably didn't have the bandwidth to continue making art. A lot of artists are only active due to Patreon.

There are a couple of things. The scrapbook concept allows for more variety visually, Pinkie brings more energy to the narration, and the subject matter (Pinkie recapping events for Flurry) is more fun.

Maurice Lamarche, voice actor for The Brain from Pinkie and The Brain among other things, is voicing a character for the 2-part opener. Sort of a neat thing, but he's not exactly a celebrity talent, he lives in Canada so given that the pool of Voice actors that live in the area it's only a matter of time before he got on at some point.

RP 14 - Tangerine World 9 (finale) - World of Chaos

Cappy - Fluttershy
Rhomega - Rarity

Last time, the heroes were able to stop the danger of the Everfree Forest, but then Tangerine World's Dr. Pinkie Pie absorbed chaos magic, turning into an alicorn. She sends the player characters back to their world and locked the door, but Twilight was able to figure out a way back.

Deciding to leave Spike behind, Twilight, Fluttershy, and Rarity head back into Tangerine World. They come out in the Tangerine family farm, where they find kangaroos helping harvest oranges, including Chandler the muscular lead kangaroo. Kumquat Salad, cousin of Clementine, appears, running away from a party cannon with legs.

The heroes and kangaroos flee the blasts of pure party and decide to head for Canterlot. Kumquat explains that Clementine is still in jail, because she said the prison break was for her. They come across another party cannon, but manage to get past it. They find three more party cannons having a tea party, and decide not to engage, leaving the kangaroos behind to fly to the castle. Twilight carries Rarity with her magic.

In the castle, they find Drowsy Moon, the unicorn whose magic went out of control before, sleeping in a room. He missed everything that happened. He decides to come with them after realizing his sister, the captain of the royal guard, is in trouble.

They sneak to the balcony outside the throne room. Pinkie is sitting on the throne with Princess Trixie Lula Moon, who insists it's fine if she doesn't get up. The other Mane Six native to that world are sitting at a dinner table. It wasn't mentioned, but there was food there. She brings up that Applejack wanted apples to be popular, so she makes it so. Clementine barges in demanding the same for oranges. Pinkie fuses apples and oranges together to resolve this.

The heroes come up with a plan: send in Drowsy, pretending his magic is out of control again via Twilight's magic. Then they sneak in and replace their counterparts; TW Twilight can't use magic, so Pinkie wouldn't think to consider that. From there, they can take the magic absorbing device from her. Pinkie pulls it out to absorb Drowsy's magic, reasoning her own probably won't help with that, and Fluttershy distracts her by declaring she's about to get married to TW Starlight (AKA Sunset Shimmer) and flying around to explain how the ceremony will go.

Rarity takes the device from Pinkie and uses it against her. It isn't enough, so the TW Mane Six activate their harmony magic to overwhelm her, leaving Pinkie as an earth pony again. They explain what Pinkie did wrong and she apologizes.

Trixie decides she isn't interested in the throne anymore, wishing to become a traveling magician. She randomly appoints Clementine as the new princess. Twilight decides there's a limit to how much they should interfere in this world.

As they leave, TW Fluttershy comes up to them. She says this is a perfect opportunity for her to leave, but she doesn't want to leave TW Starlight (AKA Sunset). Fluttershy suggests she becomes a tax collector, and she accepts, going back to the others. The ponies wave goodbye. Before the heroes leave, they finally catch sight of the lizardfolk they've heard about all throughout the Tangerine World adventure. Well, starting from part 3. Then, they're back home.

Today, we had the Movie stream.

Not many people were there at the start, but soon there were as many as five people total. Most left once the Movie ended, though. Our streaming service started messing up a lot, so we chose to stop after just one episode of Tangled, instead of the planned two. That episode will air next week instead.

I liked the Movie well enough the first time I watched it, but I also had a ton of complaints. This time, I feel like those complaints didn't matter as much, and it was a lot of fun. One thing I hadn't noticed before was that the one who rescued Twilight from Tempest's attack at the beginning (where Derpy was turned to stone) was Rainbow Dash.

The Tangled episode was the most enjoyable we've shown so far. The streaming service started messing up a lot around there, though.

Hmm, I've been thinking. My plan was to keep this thread open while the season 8 OT is, but convert it to just be about the one major subject that won't be covered by that, fanfics. And then maybe to make this clear, I'd adjust the thread name. Once season 8 ends, we'd move back here.

However,
* It seems like they're serious about new pony content coming out all year, so it makes sense to keep the season 8 thread around.
* Even if I change the name, people will get tripped up by the purpose of this thread.

So I thought, maybe close this thread and make a new thread just for fanfics? Like "My Little Pony Fan Fiction |OT| Twilight Sparkle's Secret Shipfic Folder" (final name pending). It would be a slower community thread, but I feel that's fine. There are at least three people reading fanfics here, so there's an audience, and it could push others to talk about it too. And we could put Sciz 's recommendations in the OP.

Then we can just keep posting in the season 8 thread until season 9 airs, etc.

The difference is that people besides me actually talked about fanfics. Besides, back then the argument was about having this thread and a separate place for fanfics, not the season OT and a fanfic thread.

New EQG Mini video. It's been a while.

Jeez, between "Forgotten Friendship", the beach shorts, and now this, they've done the exact same gag three times!

Draft of the character guide for season 8, just the Mane Six + Starlight for now.

I'm also testing out having the "Flawless" hugs in between the respective characters (with Pinkie's butt hug replacing the AJ/Pinkie one).

Other FiM characters to be included are the CMC, Spike, and Discord. The last is mainly for a gag where a lot of it is missing, and the missing letters turn up in the image marking where the Discord invite is. To explain what I mean, here's the equivalent I made for the Magic thread.

And as a brand new change, I decided to include Equestria Girls characters too. Namely, Sunset, SciTwi, and "And the rest".

Ooh, it's been a while since we've had the comic do what the show dares not. This stuff about Tempest finding the pony who turned her evil is a bit odd, though. Also, I wonder if they'll call her Tempest. I expect that she'll decide she prefers that name.

The Ponyville Mysteries comic seems cute. I'm surprised to see a showcase for the Big Lebowski ponies of all things.

Season 8 OT draft!

The end is coming... but not quite yet.

The season 8 premiere of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic shakes things up more than ever. Following the events of My Little Pony: the Movie, Twilight and the others realize that they are meant to spread the magic of friendship beyond the borders of Equestria, and to this end, they open the School of Friendship. Students include not just ponies, but also changelings, dragons, griffons, hippogriffs, and yaks. However, in a season premiere that 4chan hot takes have described as "anti-Trump shit", the heroes have to deal with ponies that are uncomfortable having a school where all species are invited.

Starting on March 24, new episodes will air every Saturday at 11:30 AM ET on Discovery Family. They're usually put on iTunes the next day. Seasons 1-7 can be found on US Netflix.

Also ongoing is the Equestria Girls YouTube series, which has a new short every Friday. This is a spinoff where the characters are humans in high school.

If you want to get started, then good news, we have an episode guide! Many episodes not listed as recommended are still good, and if you like how an episode sounds, feel free to watch it too. Also includes Equestria Girls.

Note that there was a huge leak of episodes from this season. In short, don't talk about the contents of leaked episodes until they air, even using spoiler blocks. Following the events of "My Little Pony: The Movie," in the back-to-back season premiere episodes titled "School Daze Part 1" and "School Daze Part 2," the Mane 6 discovers that the Friendship Map has expanded to show the world outside Equestria. Through two exciting original songs, Twilight Sparkle learns that friendship needs to spread beyond the limits of the kingdom and decides to open her very own School of Friendship. But things come to a head when the new non-pony students ditch class on Friends and Family day, putting the entire school in jeopardy!

3. The Maud Couple - March 31
Pinkie Pie's super-best-friend-sister bond is challenged when Maud gets a boyfriend that Pinkie can't stand.

4. Fake It 'Til You Make It - April 7
Fluttershy is the only pony available to look after the Manehattan boutique while Rarity is away and takes on a series of characters to cope with the intimidating clientele. But as her characters get more and more exaggerated, Fluttershy learns that she was already the best pony for the job just by being herself.

5. Grannies Gone Wild - April 14
Granny Smith and her elderly friends are headed to Las Pegasus, and Rainbow Dash tags along as chaperone so she can ride the best rollercoaster ever before it closes. Unfortunately, following Applejack's care-taking rules for the "Golden Horseshoe Gals" keep Dash so busy, she doubts she'll even get to see the rollercoaster!

6. Surf and/or Turf - April 21
The Cutie Mark Crusaders try to help a young Hippogriff figure out where he belongs. With family members on Mt. Aris as well as Sea Pony relatives in Seaquestria, he can't decide where to live. Unfortunately, the CMCs are so taken with both places, they can't decide either!

1. My Little Pony Tales - Battle of the Bands - Melody is too busy babysitting to join the battle of the bands.
2. My Little Pony Tales - The Masquerade - Bon Bon is worried everyone will laugh at her dream of being a model.

5. Tangled - The Return of Strongbow - And old thieving buddy of Eugene's returns for one last job.
6. Tangled - Great Expotations - An inventor's fair is held, and we check back in on those spikes appearing everywhere.

Tales episodes are only 12 minutes, hence why there are two. The first Tales episode actually isn't too bad, and has a good song by Kelly Sheridan (Glimglam's VA). The second, though, while it has a straightforward premise, the editing and sound just makes it... weird.

Forgotten Friendship part 3 up.

Additions were probably a little more subtle. Twilight considers fixing library catalog and volleyball scene extended with Rainbow Dash showing motivation.

And watched 4 more episodes of season 7. Personally enjoyed them overall.

Rock Solid Friendship - I kind of felt the flashback with Maud and Starlight didn't affect much of the plot. Maud's new home looks nice and Pinkie shows off very funny moments as always. Overall solid episode (pun intended).

Fluttershy Leans In - Not that bad of an episode. Fluttershy continues to prove how much she has grown as a character with her semi-assertiveness. Though felt the characters that were called to build the sanctuary felt wasted and could've learned a lesson.

Forever Filly - Like a Flurry of Emotions, this yet another episode that I can relate to. Your younger sibling has grown up and wouldn't enjoy the exact same stuff as they use to. Of course, just about anyone grows up and enjoy different things. And another episode on how well the characters have progressed, this time with the CMC. All in all, this was a good episode too.

Parental Glideance - Got some good laughs with this one. RD's parents are just very excited throughout this episode. Though the episode here shows that you shouldn't act mean towards your parents no matter how embarrassing things can be, I feel this was kind of an example of a broken pedestal occurring. Your mentor acts all mean towards her parents for no apparent reason, other than "you embarrass me!" I believe that's the first time Scootaloo has ever shown this kind of resentment towards RD, seeing as she idolized the latter for so long (to the point of being like a sister), she felt hurt that much to see RD yell at her parents. At least they make things up in the end. Pretty heartwarming episode overall.

The first is a nervous smile, pretty normal. The lack of transition shows that ponies have no in between states for emotions.

And no thoughts on the hoof hands? There's actually an even worse example in the opening, but Derpibooru didn't have it in GIF form.

Haven't watched it yet, but I guess that first scene was to reestablish why they were looking through the books individually, which is something I didn't think had to be explained in the first place. Extended volleyball sounds fun.

Revealing that Maud was involved in Starlight's evil plans wasn't necessary for their relationship, but it was a fun gag. It does demonstrate that she's perfectly willing to look past that, though.

Fluttershy Leans In - Not that bad of an episode. Fluttershy continues to prove how much she has grown as a character with her semi-assertiveness. Though felt the characters that were called to build the sanctuary felt wasted and could've learned a lesson.

Wasn't a fan myself, but I did like how Fluttershy was consistently assertive. The helpers just leaving without learning anything was indeed odd.

Scootaloo getting upset at Rainbow is good stuff, yeah. I don't think it's quite about never getting mad at your parents, but rather both parents and children reaching an understanding.

One oddity of the fandom came up in the chat: SpiderTwi. You see, there's a fanfic series crossing over MLP and Spider-Man, shipping Peter Parker and Twilight, and it wouldn't have gotten much attention if it wasn't for the author and/or an oddly invested fan commissioning tons and tons of fan art. And the thing is, a huge chunk of the art is very good! Not only did they commission from pony artists, but also superhero fan artists. While I'm not a fan of her superhero outfit, I really like the human Twilight design they go with. I'm particularly a fan of the stuff drawn by kitsuneanii.

There's a ton more at the first link. Seriously, a ton more. And if you're not signed in, you're missing just short of half of it >_>

However, what I've been able to glean about the story itself from art and comments and its general reputation sounds pretty pretty bad.

And That's Terrible by InsertAuthorHere was recommended as an actual good crossover fic, with the premise being that Lex Luthor steals Celestia's cakes and thus she seeks revenge. The key is that everything is played straight. Luthor discovered Equestria and set a plan in motion to use its magic to defeat Superman, and in the process, he got hungry and decided to steal from Celestia's baking contest. Celestia fights back not just because of the cakes, but because of the threat he poses to her kingdom. The story is set during the ending of "MMMystery on the Friendship Express" and was started in 2012, so no Princess Twilight or anything. Well, until the last chapter where she's retconned into being a princess, because that was written in 2015. The story was fun, and it was nice to see Celestia kick ass, but it went on a bit too long for my taste.

There's a new chapter of The Enchanted Kingdom by Monochromatic.

I have to say, it is pretty hilarious that the reason Celestia hasn't been responding in all this time is because she didn't have paper and ink. Although I don't think that's the real reason, and she only responded because it was Twilight.

Prof. Awe has a good point that Twilight is the only one who broke out of her curse, and thus they need to get as much information about that process as they can, even if it's painful for Twilight to talk about. And that brings us to this part.

And then her gaze shifted towards Rarity, and she found the unicorn did not share the rest of the group's enthusiasm. There was no smile on her lips, no glimmer in her eyes, nothing but the mild apprehension that seemed to suffuse her every action.

Two years ago, Twilight thought, Rarity would have been the first to force Twilight to talk about the possession.

Two years ago, Rarity pushed and pushed and pushed through every defense, every barrier, every tangle of Twilight's existence.

But now? Now Twilight struggled to find the fearless unicorn who'd faced dragons, spirits of chaos, and Twilight herself.

Their eyes met for a moment, as if Rarity had heard by Twilight's thoughts, and so the alicorn quickly looked back down at the letter Celestia had sent.

I hadn't thought about the fact that Rarity would have forced Twilight to push through the pain of the possession in the past, and that part of her isn't there anymore. This goes to show the depth of their shared trauma over the experience. I wonder if that part of Rarity will ever come back. The entire thing with neither Twilight nor Rarity wanting to talk about the possession because each thinks the other will blame themselves is kind of frustrating, but they seem to be working through it, bit by bit.

It's nice to finally get a plot hook on what to do next. We're off on an adventure once again! Yet at the same time I wonder if the adventure and romance will integrate as cleanly as they did before. It sounds like we might get stuff with Nightmare Moon from the author's comment.

And of course, Twilight being absolutely baffled by the fact that the guards would need breaks and get distracted while reading books is fantastic. The owls getting upset about the changelings trying to help Twilight when that's their job was cute, too.

I hadn't noticed this in the paragraph with Rarity's last line in the chapter until I read the comments.

"Isn't there always?" She paused again, and her chest fell and rose with a breath. Mere habit, no doubt. "Care to share your thoughts?"

And then there's this line from the prologue.

Rarity looked up at him, suddenly amused. "Love makes ghosts of us all, it would seem."

Well, she's definitely cursed. I had assumed this before, but... wait, hold on, what does this mean about how much time passed? Checking...

At that moment, North Ridge learned three important details about his new friend.

One: Her name was Rarity.

Two: She had last been seen several days ago near a place called Dodge Junction which, if memory served, was entirely on the other side of Equestria.

Three: A mere two days ago, Princess Denza had launched a kingdom-wide search for her.

Phew, not that long, then. I thought maybe there was going to be a reveal that Rarity was cursed for decades, but the kingdom-wide search only starting a few days before makes that unlikely. Of course, there's still a chance this goes on far past this prologue.

There are a couple of other hints about Rarity being see-through in the prologue, such as her sitting in the shadows and not drinking her coffee.

This was a good set up chapter.

Did you only want feedback in the doc, or here too? Anyway, I'll try to start it tonight. I think the premise of young Sunset and Cadance could be very appealing to readers and you'd really just need good cover art to draw people in.

Gonna try to whip something up on the old art tablet I've got sitting around, but I'm even less practiced as an artist than I am as a writer, so uh, we'll see about the "good" part.
