I think it's up to Liberty Media if they agree to add the option for the removal of the halo or making it partially/fully transparent. I always use the t-cam in F1 games and unless there's going to be a removal feature I won't be buying the next game.

I love how they're adding a streaming option to pick the onboard cam of any driver in the year where onboards are uglier than ever before.

Watching FP1 right now... can't see much with the onboard camera isn't it. lol.

edit: T one centered on top is ugly but decent. The side one I don't know why they even bother.

Nothing daft about that rule at all imo. It's a safety rule to ensure drivers don't go too fast under red flag conditions, I'm perfectly fine with that rule and the fact they enforced it.

I think they mean getting the penalty was daft, not the rule broken.

At least that's how I feel about it.

Yeah, I just looked at F1 reddit and found the info. There is no clear way to enter this beta test.

Shame.

Interesting comparison to P2 last year.

While I think Hamilton set a bit of a faster lap (he was 0.5s quicker than anyone this time last year) he was still 0.3s quicker than last year.

Comparing the best of each teams times to last year reveals fuck all and are as follows:

Ferrari pretty much the same, RBR 0.5s quicker. Haas 0.8s quicker, McLaren 0.8s quicker. Renault nearly the same, Force India 0.2s quicker. Williams 0.8s quicker, STR 0.9s slower. Sauber 0.4s slower.

Only 3 teams outright slower and the worst is the team switching to Honda. They may be reliable now but they've not made any progress up the grid. In fact this time last year Sainz was 7th at this point.

Now do that comparison with the race sims instead of the fastest laps. The Haas difference is astonishing.

Disappointed that Sauber still seems to be almost a second behind everybody else.

Pity for RIC....

I don't think McLaren did that badly today. I think they would have taken being 1.2 off at the end of the first day.

I wonder what happened to that fisheye cam they were going to use?

I'm okay with the halo if it really does what it is intended. The only thing I can't deal with is with the fact that Robert is not driving.

EDIT:

The central pillar at least should be transparent for non-stereoscopic displays. That's arguably more realistic than just pretending the player is a cylcops as usual.

Re the removal of the Halo - it's a non-starter for two reasons: 1, the cars would have been designed for it, so you're committing a redesign for whoever removes it, which leads to 2) if there is an aerodynamic advantage to removing the Halo, then if you're a driver you're not going to want to be at a disadvantage.

The camera placement thing is a byproduct of it - the Halo itself's task is more important than the cameras task. If they have not considered or done anything with regards to the camera placements that makes me think 1) they have accepted things the way they are or 2) they accept that the Halo is a short term solution until something like the Indycar Shield is brought into F1.

You could have the halo for a couple seconds then dither it to oblivion in a couple more to get a clear view. That way you know there s one on the car (at the start of the installation lap) but it does not bother in cockpit mode.

I've been looking for this sessions info with no joy.

What does it look like for each team on long run pace?

Edit I see the top teams above but the juicy stuff is still missed.

Oh neat, I have commentary now on all the practice sessions I guess.

Watching the sessions that weren't broadcast on NBC was always weird.

That ruling on Ricciardo, that didn't happen between sectors (ie in the sector he slowed down in) did it?

I don't understand why they didn't mandate a spot on top of the halo for a camera mount. The minimal aerodynamic impact is greatly outweighed by giving the audience a proper show.

I'm surprised a person named 'mute' had problems with a broadcast without commentary. But seriously, it is much nicer.

Stroll is only 3 tenths off of Alonso, solidly in the mid pack race, I'm pleasantly surprised, though everyone says Australia isn't actually representative of real pace.

Are you saying Ferrari should've kept the old car? Nice. Hopefully one of the Haas can squeeze between the Ferrari.

I mean, they still could simply take the Haas and give it a new paint job.

1m28.7s for Hamilton, 1m28.8s for Bottas, 1m29.0s for Verstappen, 1m29.1s for Raikkonen on the same tyres.
Haas found an astonishing 1.7 secs compared to last year.

From what I can see looks like a wet quali, but a fairly high chance we get a dry race with a fear of rain. I see some showers predicted after the race.
