If there's anything Insecure and Atlanta has taught us

It's that niggas don't like realistic portrayals of relationships. Niggas complained bout Issa and Lawrence, Molly and Dro, Van and Earn. There ain't no bad guys or good guys in these relationships. Just people on a spectrum of fucked up/ain't shit, who madd real decisions people would make in real life. And people don't like that.

Its that real shit that makes it so good, no question. Although I'd argue earn is definitely the "bad" guy here. I give him credit for stepping off when he knows he wasting her time but ultimately he's a man who's still a boy. That's real and watching him grow is rewarding precisely because of his immaturity but don't get it twisted he's been a dick to her a bunch on this show

Yeah that's why I put bad in quotes. I see so much of myself in him when I was younger. Not "bad" just misguided, insecure (especially this episode) and unsure. That's a bad partner though lol. I grew up eventually and hopefully his character will too. Or not cause that also makes for compelling tv

Well it's refreshing because he's mostly honest with himself about it. Or at least the audience. Also I forgot he even had a kid till they mentioned it tonight. He should plumb that. I'd watch the shit out of a three men and a little baby ep with them

Yeah, Earn was bugging for the most part. He should have at least tried to roll with the customs for Van's sake, hell he apparently killed it with that circle ball game by putting them in the sacks, lol. Only part I saw Van bugging was suggesting he learn German ("because it's so useful") and talking to the bartender a little too long in German.

At least he didn't have to worry about getting his tongue confidence up on the way back.

SMH @ Van's friend suggesting she would be more comfortable as Lottie's mom because she chose black.

So I live in Georgia, have heard Helen mentioned several times, but had no idea that shit went on up there. I blame the proximity to Tennessee.

Slightly tangential, but knowing nothing about Helen, another example of this can be found in Washington.

There's a place called Leavenworth that has a constant Bavarian theme. It doesn't have it because of the nationality of the population; it has it because a committee decided it would be a nice way to drive tourism there. The whole town is lederhosen central, and it has no significant cultural claim to it. It adopted a cultural simply for cash. It's a great example of cultural appropriation. I hear Oktoberfest is uber bitchin'.

Looking at the wiki article for Helen it's the same story, failed town that picked a theme for tourism. The more you know.

I don't know how much the German stuff was real and how much is just part of the weird reality of the show where someone can drive an invisible car.

Is it weird that I don't really consider this show to be a comedy? Like there are funny moments like in any show but really it's more of a drama about Earn and life in Atlanta imo...

I get this is supposed to be a realistic portrayal of relationships and all that.

But holy shit did Earn come off as a whiny bastard in this episode. Literally from square one, the entire episode, he refuses to cave on almost everything. I get that it's sort of shown in the Juneteenth episode that he hates being dragged to things, but wow he is annoying here.

He's jaded and complacent with his relationship and because of that takes Van for granted. So he had no patience for the crazy German shit to begin with. Then someone comes up and TOUCHED HIS FACE thinking he was a white man in blackface. I think he's dumb for blowing it with Van but I'd be fucking over that party/festival whatever from minute one.

Opinions and all, but I feel as if this season has been way more understated. I mean, the first season had an episode with a invisible car.

Once again, this episode showed that Earn is his own worse enemy.

Earn was dragged into a situation that he wasn't comfortable with and spoke up and was shut down. Yet, Van didn't speak at all when they went to thw strip club. If she didn't like it being there, why didn't she speak up? And the ironic part, she ended up feeling uncomfortable the same way he did.

Yeah, I like get why he is uncomfortable, but he is super whiny even on the drive in, and it just gets worse from there.

If you break it down, Van's heritage is REALLY complicated. Being a black German-American is probably a tough identity to grapple with. And that creates some really tough (and really problematic) situations for her. Earn deciding that she isn't worth grappling with that is pretty revealing.

It's a comedy in the sense that they just don't play up the funny moments for laughs. It's subtle. There's no close ups on a character about to deliver a punchline or pauses to let audiences laugh without missing anything. Shit just kinda flows in a really surreal manner.

I might be real for how it is celebrated in ATL, certainly not Bavaria. Oktoberfest events in the US are usually pretty whack. Blackface is a Dutch thing

I think you missed the point of this episode. Him being uncomfortable and bitching about it is exactly what made him a shitty partner. Her not bitching and going with him was what made her good. Sometimes we do things we don't like to share in our loved ones fun and to be around them. It's the way relationships work compromise etc. Honestly had he been uncomfortable and handled it like a man and said something instead of sulking then being glib and dickish I could see your point but he didn't . They kinda beat you over the head with the message in this ep I'm not sure how you missed it

That's neither good or bad.

Putting up with bullshit and not speaking on it is bad communication. Bad communication is a relationship killer. He was being a dick about it because he wanted to pull her aside and talk about it and she brushed him off.

Sure in real life bottling stuff up is bad communication I just don't think that's what they were going for here. He's pretty consistently been a bad partner since last season (with exceptions mind you, I don't think the intent is to blame it all on him) so this is just another example. Plus she told him going up to the fest that it may not be for him but he was on board

Like is that "toss the ball in the bucket" thing real? Because they made it look like he was Jordan making an unbelievable shot or something. lol

The scenes at the end were shot so well. i'm a sucker for depressing dramedy so this is def gonna end up one of my fave episodes of the year. loved it.

also I couldn't help but see the parallel to zazie's real life since she's dating a white guy. I wonder what she thought about the scene

Yeah, this episode was too real and hit home for sure. My last relationship died due to apathy. Unlike Earn, I realized I was becoming apathetic and decided to end it myself.

Masterpiece episode, about time we had a real Van episode, her eps end up to real with the feels.

That slow burn at the end as she closed the door on his ass, was palpable.

Earn was a dummy to pull that "I pay your bills" line.

Not too much of a funny episode but definitely made up for it with the drama.

Fuckkkkkkk, Earn reminded me so much of how I fucked up my first serious relationship lol. I felt PTSD at seeing the slow motion car crash of Earn blowing everything up.

I'm enjoying this season ofc but Glover wasn't playing when he implied this season was gonna dig a lot deeper and seemed to be a bit annoyed he had to "sugar the pill" with stuff like the guys talking on the couch or quirky gags. Would not be surprised if the tone continues to stay a bit more grounded this seasonZ
