I'm guessing it's to see if people are abusing the system as well as checking how often they're getting refunds as well as for what reason. It's a massive change so keeping it with a subset of Insiders seems like the best decision for an extended period.

I'd imagine there's a lot of pressure from third party publishers not to do this, and it's not like Microsoft is leading the market right now and can push back easily. But it needs to happen. I'd buy a ton more games digitally if I have the confidence I can get an instant refund if the game turns out not to be for me. For every refund they'd have me buying and keeping a couple more games that I wouldn't have done otherwise.

I am not in the beta or alpha so its nothing new probably but its nice to see these UWP games work with both inputs.

Also a decent game btw. Recommend the download. (Extremely short though).

Dolby Atmos setting is working better than ever with different sources after last night's update. The 1x used to revert to multichannel 7.1 on non Atmos sources and would cause weird sound issues, especially when getting notifications or using the guide. Much, much improved and music from spotify sounds outstanding being sent in atmos decoding instead of multichannel and using my onkyo all stereo channel mode.

When you scroll up/down and left to right on lists and menus the sound actually sweeps across channels

My system has been getting progressively worse over the last month in a half bc of these updates. Takes for ever for the guide to load when starting a console from instant on and at all times theres lag when trying to open it. Sometimes when starting my system it takes a few minutes for my friends list to load. It will just say 0 and show nothing.

The whole os is much slower, not faster like it needs to be.

Part of testing a new OS release includes identifying regressions as new features are introduced. If your system is getting progressively worse, please be sure to report that feedback in the same way you'd report any other bug.

Hell yes, the new sounds are amazing and they totally surprised me. There's an underlying tone that goes along with the "boop". It sounds great!

I dont know if this is a preview thing or what but I received my X over the weekend and when watching a 4k UHD disc i noticed that blacks are crushed to hell and back. Should i adjust my TV's settings or is this a known issue for preview machines?

This actually doesn't have anything to do with preview updates and it can show up on devices not in the previews.

Describe "crushed".

Chances are is just what a proper HDR disc will be like (on any player) if you don't like it you'll have to turn the brightness of your TV up

New update went out last night:

HOW TO GET IT:

• If your console is in Instant-On mode and you have been selected to receive the update, it will download and install the update and reboot to standby.

• NOTE: Once the update is available to you, you can manually begin the update by launching the Guide and navigating to All Settings > System > Updates.

• If your console hasn't downloaded and installed the update by 3:00 AM PDT 3/20/2018 (10:00AM GMT 3/20), you will be prompted to do so at that time.

• This update has a shorter than usual amount of time before it becomes mandatory.

DETAILS:

OS version released: rs4_release_xbox_dev.180316-1900

Available: 6:00PM PST 3/19 (2:00AM GMT 3/20)

FIXES:

• Audio

We have resolved issues with Dolby Atmos for Home Theater and certain AVR models that did result in random sound cut outs. The receiver should now correctly display with the ATMOS stream is detected and accurately reproduce ATMOS channels.

KNOWN ISSUES:

• Pi-hole

Pi-hole users may encounter issues signing in, creating, or recovering accounts upon downloading the 1804 update. This is due to a new configuration file which is downloaded from a URL Pi-hole blocks by default.

Workaround: Add clientconfig.passport.net to the Pi-hole allowed IP address list.

• Netflix

Netflix on Monitor only works at 1080p and does not support 1440p – Netflix is aware of the issue. Workaround : If watching Netflix on a Monitor/LCD please set the display output to 1080p.

• System

We are investigating an issue in which some users are experiencing the console shutdown after you turn it on. Workaround – Simply turn the console back on.

• Virtual Keyboard

The virtual keyboard disappears randomly when inputting text.
Chinese virtual keyboard not working in this build. Workaround plus in a USB keyboard.

• HDR Issues

Some users are discovering that some games are not showing in HDR – Please file feedback when you encounter this to help in the investigation.

• Spotify Search

Some users are discovering that the search function in Spotify is not working. Please file feedback when you encounter this to help in the investigation. Workaround - Type in a search hit enter and nothing happens. Click the left stick twice and it searches properly.

• Controller sharing/ Co-pilot vibration issues

Some users may experience a problem with a controller vibrating non-stop when using the share controller or the co-pilot feature.

• Audio

Loss of center channel when Windows Sonic enabled
Audio lag in various games and apps being tracked

• Mixer – Games UWP Games

There is an issue with broadcasting UWP Games. If you start a game then proceed to load Mixer and the broadcast fails we are tracking this issue. Workaround – Start Mixer to broadcast then start the game and you can broadcast while the game is running.

My brightness is maxed out for my OLED LG tv. I guess I'll just tinker with the settings as it was crushing blacks when watching Men In Black during the evening, even with the brightness settings maxed.

an example is that the dark suits of J and K basically run pure black in dark scenes when it's clear there should be more of a spectrum of black for the suit instead.

I've not seen the LG settings, but it sounds like th brightness setting is the equivalent of the "backlight" setting on on LED TV. Typically there is another setting that raises the blacks slighting, this is the one you want.

Edit* just had a look at rtings and there is an OLED brightness that is separate to this?

Alternatively some TVs make it far more difficult than it should be to match black Levels with the source.

The Xbox really needs an HDR compatible TV calibration app, he built in one only works for SDR.
I actually tried making one th other day, but UWP doesn't allow HDR output for apps. Only games in the ID@Xbox program.

Got the new Alpha insider update this morning.

Seems to have introduced a new issue for me. The Game Pass and EA Access tabs in Games and Apps do not load. At all. Just an endless spinning circle. Turning the Xbox off and on seems to get one of the two to load, but as soon as I play a game and come back to Games and Apps, endless loading again.

Also the Game Pass name has gone weird. Accents everywhere.

Don't worry about that, it's not a bug. It's standard language localisation testing.

Sorry for another freesync question, but I bought the LG 27UD69P because it supports freesync over HDMI. However I just read it has a range of 48-60Hz, I assume this isn't good for an X right?

I don't think that has Freesync-Over-HDMI , so it won't be any good for Xbox.

Every review I've read says it does. The AMD website even lists that it does. There's actual youtube videos also showing it work over HDMI.

It didn't list it in the specs on the website, especially for the range. It does say it in the manual though, sorry to confuse things.

I don't know a lot about Freesync, but from an article I read I believe Xbox One only supports Freesync 2.

Ya I looked into this, freesync 2 is backwards compat with freesync so it'll work. My biggest question is how gimped I'll be with a 48 to 60hz limit on this monitor.

I'm getting 4k out of it at least though.

I've been testing my new Freesync monitor for a bit now and I can't say I'm that impressed by it. I'm 90% certain it is due to it only supporting 48-60hz(75 on PC). I'm installing more games, but for now, I'd advise everyone to wait for affordable 30-60hz displays. There are very few games that a 48-60hz display will be useful for.

Ya I kind of wish I waited, but I've wanted a 4k monitor for my X and Pro so for $400 I'm not upset. However next year or end of this year I'll be buying another with a much larger hz range.

It should help with some 60fps shooters that have some drops in crazy fights though I guess.

4K is def worth it though, so at least you have that! The best game I've found for my monitor is Gears 4 in its performance mode! Although, I do have a high end PC that could run it at over 90fps, so it's still not all that useful. I just really wanted to see the feature in person, is all. I can at least make use of the 75hz my screen has!

For over 1 week, none of my game clips are appearing anymore on XboxDVR or XboxClips and I don't know why, every setting is like it ever was, checked the privacy, don't know what is going on, they are on Xbox.com, but on none of the video websites.... also, every time I upload something the message looks like this now:

The weird police is normal, it's what they use for temporary strings that haven't been localized yet.
I don't know about the xboxdvr issue, I noticed it too. Maybe they're changing the way you access your media online and xboxdvr will have to update on its end.

Mine captures aren't appearing on other sites as well, nor for any of my friends, I dunno if it's something on the dash though.

Fixes:

Home

We have resolved the issue in which some users encountered a Black screen on boot and were unable to recover the console.

My Games and Apps

We resolved an issue in which some games and apps are missing from your collection. You will no longer see the tabs in your My Games and Apps show a spinning circle/no titles/and or some titles missing in your (1) Game Pass collection and (2) EA Access collection.
Users will no longer see install progress reports over 100% when installing game titles.
Resolved an issue in which some users when launching various games and apps would result in the app or game not successfully starting.

System

Resolved an issue in which some users had been experiencing the console shutdown after you turn it on or an experience of taking a long time to shut down the console.

Mixer – Games UWP Games

We have resolved the issue with broadcasting UWP Games.

Cortana

Fixed an issue in which users had trouble launching games with Cortana and then Cortana showing up as a game.

4K Game Crashes

We resolved an issue when resuming a 4K HDR game after watching captured 4K screenshots and gamedvr clips would result in the game never starting again or result in crashes.

Microsoft Edge

Resolved an issue with videos playing no audio in Microsoft Edge.

Audio

Resolved an issue in which some Audio receivers would lose spatial sound.
Users of Spatial Audio will no longer experience loss of center channel audio / voices. This fix also addresses the lower Amazon audio relative to other apps.
Resolved an issue in which some games would fail to play audio or loss of audio would crash the game.

Family Timer

Resolved issues in which some families with multiple Xboxes or multiple shared Windows PC's, who use Microsoft Accounts with their family. This fix resolves time limits across devices to behave in an consistent way.

Settings

We have released a new version of Upload studio to resolve issues in which some users had been unable to navigate to "Allow game captures" in settings.

Virtual Keyboard

Resolved the issue to enable the Chinese virtual keyboard.
The virtual keyboard will no longer disappear randomly when inputting text.

Miscellaneous fixes and improvements.

Hey guys, my friend seems to have the black screen issues? He's tried hard resets and disconnecting his ethernet/kinect but still gets a black screen after the initial Xbox logo boot up screen.

Any helps would be greatly appreciated.

Absolutely normal my friend, this is for localisation strings. It'll probably go away in the next build.

I was having audio issues with FFXV last night, and this was before the update; I was still having the same issue after the update. The issue is that I'm not getting any audio; no menu music, no in-game music, no sound effects, no voice or ambient sounds, nothing. I filed a report before I realized there was an update, so I'm not sure if I'd have to file another one after updating.

With the latest Preview Dashboard my Xbox One X encodes all audio as ATMOS, even when it's not. Before it would switch to ATMOS when there was a true ATMOS stream, otherwise I could use Dolby Surround Upmixing with those titles that weren't ATMOS. Now, I don't have a choice, since non-ATMOS streams are their discrete channels encapsulated in an ATMOS signal, preventing me from doing any further processing.
