Looking for two sorts of recommendations, if folks are able to help out.

First, any adventure games with an early Zelda vibe (particularly Link to the Past/Link's Awakening). I got really into LttP Randomizer, and then really fell out with it, but I still kinda want a game that'd scratch a similar itch. I have Anodyne, which IIRC is in that range, but I don't think I have anything else.

Second, any suggestions for indie games pre-2013? (Or, even better, pre-2010.) I'm thinking of putting together a podcast about older indie games, including a "where are they now" about the developers, and I could always go for ideas for games outside of what I've seen already. (I know it's a little odd to ask for old-game recommendations in a new-game thread, but....)

First question: Blossom Tales is the most obvious choice as it's essentially Link to the Past made by an indie developer. I'd suggest Ittle Dew as a decent suggestion. It's both simpler and more complex. They're smaller games that are really focused on the dungeons. I only played the first game but to give you an idea what I mean there were four total dungeons with the first three giving you items to help solve puzzles and movement and the last final dungeon. But you're actually able to get to the final boss with any mix of two of the three items and the last boss will change accordingly. And yet it's not obvious at all as I couldn't imagine not getting to the boss without all three items. Really great dungeon design with that in mind. I simply didn't find it an exciting game.

Evoland 1 and 2 might scratch a little bit of the itch but they also do a lot more than just be Zelda-likes. Worth playing, though. And now I'm trying to remember another indie game that I barely have a memory about that is about two brothers (No, not Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons) that I believe played with a GameBoy aesthetic and you were one brother trying to save the other? Maybe? Super vague memory but I was thinking it was a mini-Zelda-esque game.

For your second question there's a LOT out there. I'm not sure if you'd be interested in paying $20 for a Kindle book (or I suppose Google more to not pay?) but here's a link to a book from indiegames.com that was written in 2011 of the 250 Indie Games You Must Play which undoubtedly would give you a lot to talk about for the time period you're looking for:

https://www.amazon.com/250-Indie-Games-Must-Play/dp/143987574X

If you'd like I can put together a list of probably my favorite ten indie games or something from back there to whittle the number down but there's so many that's tough. One other suggestion is going to my favorite old indie site that went down in 2011 as it's still up and you can just go back through the posts and see games that were talked about: http://www.gamesetwatch.com/

Some others by name: love (sequel came out last year called kuso), Noitu Love 2 (konjak went on to do Iconoclasts), Within a Deep Forest (and other games from the developer like Knytt), Crayon Physics Deluxe, and An Untitled Story (from the developer that went on to do Celeste and Towerfall)

Ha, of course that's the title. But now that I see it originally came out in 2013 I wonder if I'm thinking of yet something else also or if that is the game in mind and maybe it kicked around on indie sites for a long time before it released? I swear I had downloaded and played a version of it long before 2013 but after doing some searching it seems it mostly got talked about in 2012 and 2013. It's not that big of a deal but that does appear to be the game I had in mind. And the last update I could find from them was just last October so it seems the remake is still coming but it'll be after they finish YIIK.

SYNTHETIK is pretty legit.

SYNTHETIK is legit.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/528230/Synthetik/

Rogue-lite/like (IDK the difference) shooter. Binding of Isaac item unlockes, RPG-like experience/perks. Adjustable difficulty levels, and four classes.

I've put 4 hours into it and barely scratched the surface (2nd boss REKT me)
I keep almost buying this game and I think I'm finally gonna do it. I've played a lot of twin stick shooters lately (Monolith from last year is the best one I've ever played) but I really like how this one looks a bit more strategic and slower paced.

Today's highlight is a trippy 2-screen shmup ported from 3DS.

So did this game reach its stretch goal for a Switch release? Trying to decide which version to go for. It looks super cool.

It's pretty strategic - I finally got the multiplayer working and had a great run with a random. The only thing I feel lacking right now is the animations - the game and UI look quite slick, but it feels like the dev team don't have an actual animator onboard. Everything feels rudimentary and conservative in motion. If you're curious to try some co-op, add me on Steam. steamcommunity.com/id/spineduke

Yeah, I'm here to see if anyone has played Ash of Gods. Tried to get in to review it but no luck.
Dialogue is........ really bad. For all that I love TBS and weird turn-based combat systems, combat is my least favorite part about it. Combined, I can't really recommend it unless you're a high fan of TBS.

New game from the Stories: The Path of Destinies devs. Looks pretty cool.

You are the Harbinger, a skilled warrior who exists outside of time. You have foreseen the annihilation of the land known as Urralia and have been summoned to rewrite its fate. Serve as the eyes and the sword of Urralia as you identify characters who may have played a part in the story of its destruction, like a war general or a powerful sorcerer. Appear alongside these characters to discover how they chose to spend their final moments. Will you fight with them or against them?

By participating in fateful events from different perspectives, you'll learn valuable information about how specific decisions unfold. When those situations call for battle, make use of the Harbinger's sword techniques and creatively combine time-slowing spells or other abilities to eliminate threats. Use the power of Omensight to weave a new narrative, pave the way to a brighter future, and give the land of Urralia a second chance.

From the creators of Stories: The Path of Destinies.
Key features:
  • Manipulate time to witness the outcome of events from different perspectives
  • Join a diverse cast of characters with mysterious roles to play in Urralia's story - and each other's
  • Learn key information about specific characters, then help or hinder them to prevent the end of the world
  • Fight using fluid, stylish combat that combines swordplay and magical abilities

Nice job, and I agree everyone should play OCTAHEDRON. I place it more in the Housemarque camp than the Minter camp, but both analogies are fitting. It's simply sublime! I expect it to maintain a pretty high spot on my GOTY list.

I have no qualms about the weekly top ten. Listing ten games alone doesn't do much for me personally since I skim everything but I like that with those ten you have your own small write up as that got me to add a past game to my wishlist that was noted for one of the games. I like the weekly notable stories more as it reminds me of when I used to check gamesetwatch.com every day for curated and notable indie stories/writing/interviews/etc. I'll get in the habit of seeing what you two put up for that.

New game from the Stories: The Path of Destinies devs. Looks pretty cool.

I think I loved Stories much more than the normal person. When you said it's a new game from the same folks I was prepared to write about how I wish it was just more of the same but improved upon and after reading about it I think that's what it will be. From the short description it seems you'll replay the story with different choices (perspectives) to give alternative takes on events. Hopefully the action is improved upon along with graphics and the usual stuff you expect from developers as they improve over time.

Indie Era, i need some recommendations. I am moving to London and cant bring my PS4 so my intention is to bring my laptop (Intel HD 4000, i7, 8gb ram = a good toaster) with Steam on it and a lot of awesome indie games (my favorite)

Now i will write a list of the things i have and like the most to give you an idea of my tastes:

Hollow Knight
Celeste
Iconoclasts
SteamWorld Dig 2
Ori and the Blind Forest
Enviromental Station Alpha
Cuphead (not lookig for more of this type)
Owlboy
Into the Breach (not looking for more of this type)
Cave Story +
Enter the Gungeon (not looking for more...)

So im looking for something as epic as these games

Any suggestion?

Guacamelee! - You've probably played it on a PS console, but it was the closest game thought of
FEZ
INK - basically a minimalist Super Meat Boy with a fun twist
Unravel - charming like Ori, but it's EA so you have to get it on Origin
Headlander - a fun/humorous metroidvania from Double Fine
Fly'N - mostly platformer, but you do unlock different character with different abilities

Plus a few other's that are phenomenal but don't exactly match up with your list (I tend to favor platformers, puzzle platformers, and rhythm games):
OCTAHEDRON - platformer, my most recent obsession
Nex Machina - twin stick SHMUP
Velocity Ultra and Velocity 2X - SHMUP and SHMUP/Platformer hybrid with a puzzle-y/rhythm-y feel
140 - rhythm platformer
The Swapper - puzzle platformer
All the Amanita Games (Samorost, Mechanarium, Botanicula, Chuchel) - point and clicks
Thumper - a weird rhythm game nightmare

Frost do you have a mouse/wireless mouse for your laptop? Or just the touchpad

Seconding Octahedron, it's a wonderfully designed and stylish platformer

Also

Clustertruck
Brigador
Cobalt
Pixeljunk Shooter
Heat Signature
Nimbus
Intrusion 2
Tokyo 42

Some of those games you two recommended probably won't work on his machine. I mainly play on my laptop with an Intel HD4000 but only with an i5 [email protected] (which is a bit slower of course) but I already tried some of those games and they ran like not at all (looking at Nex Machina and Tokyo 42 specifically).

Got some more games you could take a look at though:

Night in the Woods
Steamworld Heist (you probably played this on mobile, I guess)
Salt & Sanctuary
Slain
Momodora

Thank you for this list. And for taking your time making the links as well. Very thoughtfull. Very appreciated. From that list i already have Thumper, all Amanita minus Chuchel, The Swapper, FLY'N, Unravel, FEZ, Ink, Guacamelee so you pretty much nailed what i like.

And from what i dont have OCTAHEDRON has a demo which i tried and i really like it. Tough as nails but very innovative. Thanks! And also im checking the rest after i write this

Yes i have an external wireless mouse, i cant stand the touchpad, i wish i could disable it and forget about it. Why did you ask it? Any game in mind?

OCTAHEDRON is one of the things i was looking for. An innovative platformer. The demo is great. Tough as nails but splendid.

I will be checking the other games soon after i finish with Wozman list. So many games :) Thanks M_B!!

So we have a very similar computer, so Night in the Woods works on my PC, i was unsure. Good to know that game has very good ratings. I wanted that. Now the problem is money and time lol, sooooo many games! From your list i have Salt, Slain and Heist but will be checking Momodora in a second.

Mouse or touchpad is important when recommending games for laptop, that's it
