Thank you kind sir. Also I have a loaner... they said my car is ready to be picked up(since technically nothing is wrong with it) should I pick it up or wait until this issue is resolved??
Verify that they actually installed a touch screen (if that's why they had you bring it in). I wouldn't drive off the lot otherwise.

A lot of luxury cars (many Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, BMW, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, etc.) don't have a touchscreen and instead rely on control knobs placed near the center console. The reasoning is to avoid fingerprints, as well as be able to place the screens in a way where it would be difficult to reach consistently for better aesthetics/"easier" to see. The $130,000+ BMW i8 doesn't even have a touchscreen.
Sort of makes sense.. it would bug the shit out of me seeing fingerprints all day while I'm driving my nice car.

Usually when you pick up a new car the salesperson sits down in the car with you and goes over all the options. I'm surprised that wasn't the case here.

I think you're SOL. I don't think you can return the car. What I think you can do is get them to credit you with service. Get a quote from a reputable car audio installer for an aftermarket touch screen (there are good ones), and go back to the dealer with this info.

Yeah...my ATS has an interior like this:

The piano black looks nice when clean, but that's never.

Here's an example of the BMW i3 interior, with the screen wider than normal and set farther back. You can see the control knob by the cupholder. It rotates clockwise and counter-clockwise to go right/down and left/up respectively, or you can move it in one of the four directions as well. You then push it in (like L3/R3 on a Dualshock) to click on something. Rotating it to quickly go through menus feels so good.

Right, that's my problem with my Q50's two touchscreens.

I feel the opposite. If you are going to drop that much on a car, should it not have all the things you requested and were told it had?

I suppose it depends on whether you would use the feature. Most Of the people I know with Apple play use the jog wheel. I straight up turn off my entire display in most cases.

The salesperson is either going to say "my bad" or lie through their teeth about saying they thought it had a touch screen.

I wouldn't pick it up until it was resolved, personally.

I never really thought about it before, but do you not have any rights the second you drive off the lot in terms of these things? Seems like an easy way to ""scam"" people

Consider reading the OP.

The salesperson has acknowledge the mistake by setting up a service appointment to get it "fixed" the service department confirmed it can not be "fixed" as it is not a feature.

Checkmate salesman.

I don't know man...I am honestly not sure how they would even "fix" this.

I configured it many different ways on the BMW site and I could never find anything about a touch screen option.

Also this review says touch screen only for 5 series and above:

https://mobilesyrup.com/2017/07/26/018-bmw-4-series-review-seeking-efficiency/

Are you sure the other car you drove had a touch screen?

This says you can get touchscreen with the premium package.

And Car and Driver's actual infotainment review says no touchscreen.

BMW's iDrive infotainment system is aesthetically pleasing, and the absence of a touchscreen means bye-bye finger smudges. The software is more responsive than popular smartphones, but Apple CarPlay costs extra here and Android Auto isn't available.

https://www.caranddriver.com/review...ive-infotainment-review-car-and-driver-page-6

The point being they can't fix his issue. Either he wants the car or he doesn't at this point and I doubt they will take it back.

I love this thread, I plan to one day have the money to complain that my brand new 4 series doesn't have touchscreen.

Btw great choice, it's a beautiful car.

I'm starting to think the 2 door premium package has touch screen and the 4 door premium package doesn't.

OP, did you test drive a 2 door car and buy a 4 door?

Scratch that. All of these websites contradict one another. Sounds like the 5 series has it and not the 4s.

If it's anything like my 2014 5 series, there's premium. And premium plus .

I have premium only and don't have blind spot or foot activated trunk for example

The knob is the much better approach over a touch screen. I hated smudging up the screen all the time. Can you try to cope? Obviously try to get something out of the deal but I'd say something other than a touch screen

My 2018 m240 series with nav has a touch screen so it's weird yours doesn't? But that's if you have nav

Never use it because the fingerprints are terrible lol

I recently bought a BMW 430i gran coupe (last week to be exact) and when test driving a few BMWs I asked the sales person about the touchscreen. He told me that it was a new feature and last year's models did not have a touchscreen but 2018s do. The day I picked up my new car I found out (after I drove off the lot) that the touchscreen wasn't working. I immediately called the salesman and told him and he asked if I could come back to get it checked out. I ended up going back to the store the following day and he tested it out and acknowledged it wasn't working either. He told me to set up an appointment with the service center to get it repaired and I just got a call from them saying that my car doesn't come with a touchscreen and that the 2019 versions will. The thing is the 440i that I drove HAD a touchscreen that worked. I would not have bought this car if I knew it didn't have that feature, I would have opted for the car that did. I just called the salesman again and he said he's gonna look into it and informed me that SOME models don't have a touch but he NEVER TOLD ME THIS, in fact, when I asked him while test driving he said all 2018s had it.

What is my recourse? I love the car but I want the damn touchscreen, it might seem silly but when I know what I want I make damn sure I get exactly what I'm looking for. I don't think I can return the car since it was new so can I make them get me a touchscreen in the car? How should I approach it?
OP,

To clarify, your car has a screen, but it's just not touch capacitive? So you have to use the little wheel and nobody instead?

Either way, since you bought the car new you need to immediately speak with the manager. States exactly what happened, and that you were taken on a test drive and told that all 2018s have the touchscreen. You have to be covered under false advertising or bait and switch of some sort. If they wontbhelpw, contact BMW of NA as others have advised. I doubt they want to lose a customer with the buying power to afford new.

I was honestly told the same thing about the 2018 models. Didn't get one, but I remember that being a selling point of the 2018 models.

Good luck, OP.

I don't know why some people assume touch screen = better. The current BMW screens are not designed for touch. They are super far away from the driver and not at a comfortable position at all imo. The iDrive knob is perfect.

That being said, I was under the impression only 7 series had touch? Guess not. I don't think there's any chance at all that they will install the touch into your current car. They would have to take the hit on the updated iDrive part as well as labor. Your best option is probably to upgrade to a 440i..which is another like 5k?

Yeah, I was thinking that when looking at images of 4 series interiors earlier. Probably nice to have both options, though. Certain things may be easier with touch than with the knob.

I have a 3 with essentially the same layout. Maybe my arms are short but it's just not possible to reach the screen. You have to lean forward which doesn't seem good for when driving. I could see it helping a bit with Apple Car Play or the navigation, but the navigation is ass anyway lol.

But I do agree, I would prefer to have both options, ESPECIALLY if I was told that it had it. Good luck OP, try to enjoy the car without it if there's nothing that can be done. Don't get too hung up on it, you won't even miss it! :)

I know TC purchased the Gran Coupe (sedan version)

But about the early 4 series...
I used to want a 4 series coupe... I've had nothing but 3 series all my life. 3 generations.

And I still glance at some... but then I think to myself... what's so special about the coupe version? Is it for those who can't afford the 6 series coupe? Or don't want to deal with the maintenance of a 6 series coupe? Or don't like the look of a 6series coupe?

Miss having a 3 series coupe?

Performance and feature wise.. 2014+ 4 series don't seem that different than 2012+ 3 series sedans.

Is it just for the look of it? They look Nice! But man the price. Even after all these years.

So like, you had a BMW, with a big 'ol black screen in the dash, and you took it because the touchscreen wasn't working and they told you that you don't have a touchscreen?

I've never had a BMW but I assume the alternative is physical buttons and knobs to navigate the screen, right? Otherwise I don't get how that makes sense, haha.

Also, your BMW should have a touchscreen. My Honda Civic has one...

Yeah I'm almost 100 percent sure the 440i I drove had a touchscreen. I remember my girlfriend fiddling with the screen while I was driving. Even the 3 series loaner car I have has a freaking touch screen. I don't understand why this wouldn't.

I'm confused by your question...it's like asking why get a 3 when you can get a 5 or something. There is no more 3 coupe so unless you want a tiny 2 coupe, you need the 4 coupe. It's more aggressive than a 3 and looks nicer imo. I wouldn't compare it to the 6 at all

I live in Mass and I have had the car for 10 days now. I am trying to look up the lemon laws but they all see to apply to used cars.
Op, I work in the car sales bussinness in MA , ill talk to my boss tomorow to see what are your options. In this a brand new car?

MA Lemmon laws only apply to used cars that have apocaliptyc mechanical problems.

Yes car salesmen have no function in society, but your only recourse would be making a big enough stink and ditch the car.

Apart from that I do not get touch screens in cars at all. You have to take your eyes off the road for operation. Zero tactile feedback. Probably why, I don't think, any German car does.

OP just bitch until the dealer offers to cover the cost of installing the touch screen. Wether a touchscreen is worth it or not (I'm awaiting delivery of a Volvo XC40 and they have huge touch screens as standard across the range, even the basic models) it's about getting what you expected/paid for. Such a huge financial investment needs to come with appropriate service.

My old man works for Mercedes and has worked in the motor industry all of his life. I text him about his thread and he said that if he heard a customer with this complaint, he'd absolutely just get them to cover the cost of the work. Sometimes you get chancers (obviously not you) trying to dick the dealer about after the sale, but for the most part it's not worth the aggro of denying them.

As a BMW driver I didn't know that any BMW had a touch screen, I would have assumed they all use the idrive control knob. There is no way the dealer will install a touch screen, it's never that simple. And the base price difference between a 430 and a 440 is like $8k. So if the 440 really has a touch screen and that is worth $8k to you then make them take back the car you bought and buy the other one I guess. Seems crazy to me just for a touchscreen but it's your money. The idrive knob is really easy to use once you get used to it.

That is incorrect. It also applies to new cars as well. I've seen BRZ's lemon law'd for chirping fuel pumps in MA.

I like that better than a touch screen cause finger nastys don't look good. My BMW's knob got a touch screen kinda thing on it too so you can navigate by touching the surface or type by "writing" the letters with your fingers.

For real. If you wanted it so bad...I mean, c'mon. I wanna say this is on you but you should have recourse due to the massive price.

Edit* I see you tested one WITH a touchscreen but not the same car you drove off with. Still should've tested it but I can see how ya overlooked it. I've been there. Godspeed, dudeski.
