Den of Geek:

Season two hits the ground running, picking up where last year's eight episode run ended and covering books five through nine: The Austere Academy, The Ersatz Elevator, The Vile Village, The Hostile Hospital and The Carnivorous Carnival. It largely continues the ethos of its predecessor; closely following most of the events of the books, with a few changes here and there to make the serialisation a little smoother and the overall mystery more pronounced. And for the most part, it works a treat.

There really is nothing else like A Series Of Unfortunate Events on television, and that feels very fortunate indeed.

I hope this time they find their tone better... the jump from modern world to the fantastical was a bit jarring for me last time

I really think this missed the mark in terms of tone and style. I didn't really get the gothic vibe from the books. As it's own thing it was ok but doesn't touch the books. I'll still watch and see if it any better this time

I don't agree at all. The production design on the show is absolutely gorgeous and one of the best aspects of it. It might not necessarily be gothic but that's not a defining quality. It's still very much ASOUE and they nailed the tone IMO.

I agree it is gorgeous and one of its best aspects, just felt different than the books in lots of small way to me.

Excited for this tomorrow. Especially since it's getting into the more interesting books.

I'll still watch it, but it's a shame they didn't trim it down a little. My main complaint last season was that two episodes per book seemed to go on too long.

Man the first episode has a terrific meta gag and a totally gratuitous Spice Girls reference? You spoil me show, you spoil me.

The first two episodes were pretty good. I forgot how sharp the writing was.

I wasn't super high on the first season, some delivery, especially Warburton seemed off. I'll still watch this though, the books got better as they went and I think some of the best material should be in these episodes.

The art design in this show is just unbelievably good. The sets, the costumes, the whole thing just feels like a crazy retro painting.

I couldn't disagree more. That was. EXACTLY the tone I always got from the books. Just about everything about the show thus far (only one episode into season 2 so far) has been pretty perfect in terms of what I was looking for out of this adaptation.

The only big difference is a bit of the casting, none of which has been bad. Absolutely loving Warburton as Snicket, btw. Not what I pictured based on the book, but way better than what I'd imagined.

Just started Season 2 up. I like the reference to the
alternate book cover that Poe was reading

are the adults still dumb as fuck? I know that's the point, but it went down a lot smoother reading it as a kid than watching it as an adult.

Yes and no. The backplot with the secret organization is way more elaborate this season, so there are more competent adults in the show, but Mr. Poe is still as dumb as ever.

He was so dumb in one moment I had to turn it off and mentally prepare myself for what he was about to do.

Just watched the Austere Academy episodes. Damn the actress they got for Carmelita nailed it.

If people here say it's better than season one I'll start watching. Season 1 was just too hit and miss for me.

Just finished season 2.

Holy shit Carmelita was perfect.
Esme was amazing.
And expanding the librarians role was a nice touch for the end.
This season is so IN right now!
I can't wait for the final season!

Esme and Carmelita were perfection. Like...exactly how I pictured them while reading the books as a kid.

The scene in
The Library of Records with Esme chasing the kids
was AMAZING.

Interesting take on Jacques. I don't know why Mrs. Poe being a horrible person irks me more than the others. Maybe it's because of the authority she holds being the head of the newspaper or because she's not a typically bad person like the rest, but instead just lacks any sort of empathy.
