I've been doing a Symphonia playthrough and I miss free run and sidestepping so much. Especially frustrating when some bosses just straight up manhandle you on Hard. Managed to beat Kratos though, so I'm happy.

Level 5.
But then you have to know to equip it, which I've seen some people not do.

Yep, a friend of mine got to the first fight with Arietta and quit because he kept losing, and when I asked him he had no idea what free run even was lol.

Oh god, I actually saw an attempted speed run a few years back where the player actually died in the last duel with him lol. So much salt that night.

Man the longer it takes for my copy of Vesperia to show up the more antsy I'm getting. I lucked out big time modding my PS3 without completely destroying it.

After playing Tales of Magilou's Menagerie a second time, I thought I'd step back in here to remind everyone how magnificent the cast is, fashion sense aside of course. First, the beautifully unholy trinity of Velvet/Magilou/Eleanor simply cannot be beaten and puts almost all previous female characters not named Edna, Rita, or Pascal to shame. Throw in Eizen and the fact that their token baby character manages to not pull a Anise and you've got gold. Rokurou is rather forgettable but that's okay. Even as far as Tales mascots go, Bienfu is top tier imo.

1. We all agree that Eleanor is Sorey's great x 100 grandmother right? Same eyes, similar personalities and style, same ability to vibe with malakhim/seraphim. I'm thinking she or her descendants went on to found Camlann village to watch over Laphicet.

2. I still can't decide if Lailah is the reincarnation of Celica/Seres, Magilou, or just chilling in a sword and/or lake offscreen minding her own business during Berseria, but it's something I think about a lot when I play and I'm certain it's one of those three. lol

"Grrr my brother's so strong I hate him. Grrr I wanna kill my brother to prove I can. Also family honor and swords." - Rokurou, 90% of the game.

If it wasn't for the fact that they needed his soul to awaken Berseria's version of Ifreet, I would've been rooting for Shigure tbh.

...pls don't ban me. :p

Rokurou is cool at least for all of the nice dialogue-driven moments he has with Eizen and Laphicet.

I got back to Zestiria last week for the third time :P
- I started playing it back in April or June of last year, but then Splatoon 2 happened (and played Switch games almost exclusively).
- Continued in January, but then Monster Hunter World happened.

Still enjoying the game, but I'm afraid of changing/experimenting with equipment because it's super annoying to get some skills back, so I'm using under-powered weapons :(
The option to save armor sets would have been so welcomed and useful.

Anyway... the long cutscene in Lastonbell (when Lailah and Rose talk the night before, I'm assuming, the final battle) is sooooo good thanks to the music it plays. I got a little teary-eyed at the end of the scene and it was because of "Journey's End." It just hits you ( T_T)

Edit: Zaveid voice/accent still makes me feel things ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

So I'm completely fucked.

My USBs are either too weak or aren't Fat32-compatible, so I can't play Vesperia without shelling out a ton of money for a compatible flash drive, and I don't even know how to start looking for one.

EDIT: lucked out and found one for ten dollars on amazon.

Alright guys my copy of Tales of Vesperia showed up. Just gotta wait for my Fat32 flash drive to show up and we're good to go.

Shit yes let's get this show on the road. It's time for Vesperia PS3!

Thanks so much to Brawly both for the guide and for helping me with my questions.

So I just saw this video of Sakuraba doing For the Sake of Mutual Proof live for the first time... of course it doesn't quite match up with the melody of the original entirely, especially at 3:00 LMAO.

For as much shit as he gets for his samey sounding music, at least he seems to have a lot of fun with what he's doing lol (probably more so during the live versions of his Tri-Ace Stuff). I've actually been playing Star Ocean 3 recently and out of all of his works I actually think it's probably his best.

His music is so forgettable that even after listening to the original, I had no idea when it played in the game.

Here's hoping for a fresh take on both the games in general and the music come June.

I'm bout to get Tales of the Abyss 3DS. I'm in a Tales mood (started replaying Hearts R) after finishing the ToS Chronicles collection finally (still need to do some sidequests for both games though). I hope we hear of a new game this year.

Looking forward to replaying Abyss. It's not one of my favorites, I think Symphonia and Vesperia are both way better. That said, it's still a great game. Although I'm not looking forward to the annoyances the cast provides ie
Anise being the worst character ever, the treatment of Luke even after the cast learn of his true age/state, Jade's annoying withholding of info, Natalia's obsession with Asch, Asch being the worst ever, etc.

Plus no voiced skits. I skipped them all in ToS cuz I can't handle that.

Luke is a damn fine MC. His transition was fun to watch.

Luke was better when he was an immature ass because you could tell he wasn't nearly as bad as the cast kept treating him. He constantly proved in a hundred subtle ways that he was kind and growing into a better person.

But fuck that let's have him cut his hair and turn into another Anime Jesus protagonist.

Because he's a giant condescending asshole who's basically responsible for the entire plot of the story and only wises up near the end.

Like who the fuck is he to talk down to Luke when five minutes of explanation would solve everything?

THANK YOU

Jade is seriously responsible for a lot of the shit that happens in the game because he won't open his big ass mouth but to spew vitriol masked as sarcasm and snark at the others. He withholds crucial information constantly that could have prevented a lot of the shit that happens.

Everyone loves Jade, but I'm a proud hater since day 1.

I picked up my copy, can't wait to delve in now lmao. I wonder if my opinion of the cast will change. I honestly don't know if I can say I love a single character, other than maybe Guy. I have a soft spot for Natalia until all that comes out of her mouth becomes "ASCH!"

I like Guy most of all because he has believable motivations for his bullshit, he gets over it anyway before it becomes a problem and talks about it like an adult, and he's always there for Luke.

It's probably just taking them a while to make the full jump to PS4. Assuming that's the console anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if it was PS4/Switch.

Finally finished Berseria. Now I'm a crying mess after watching the ending.

Man those pictures in the end credits
really don't help at all. Just makes things worse when you see what life would have been like for them with no malevolence. It's like a kick in the balls. Just feel bad for them.

Wow, I did not remember Abyss being so hard on Hard. Bosses have a huge jump in stats, and I'm nowhere near able to afford the items necessary to properly play on Hard. Weird that I didn't remember this. Arietta was impossible on Hard.

Also damn the AI sure has come a long way. Literally nothing I can do to fix the AI running up to hit enemies (including mages). Even more annoying is physical attackers running up, hitting the enemy, backing away slowly, running away, and then returning to repeat the process. Awful.

Yeah, the AI is a godsend in Berseria compared to the older games. It almost felt like cheating after the AI fix.
Just played through Symphonia on hard and had similar problems. Everytime Raine wants to resurrect someone she runs right up to the boss, stares at it for a good second or two then starts casting. Extremely annoying.

Debating if it's worth playing through Abyss too (haven't beat it yet) or just wait for the new game/play something else. Not really a fan of the dated battle system.

Holy shit, now here's something I never expected to see: Tales characters... in a Tri-Ace game.

Knowing the history of Tales and Tri-ace, this is kind of mindblowing to see.

...and now I had a crazy thought of it all going full circle and the next new Tales announcement being a full remake of Tales of Phantasia done by Tri-Ace. I'm sure it'd never happen but damn it'd be kind of cool to see if Gotanda somehow managed to make the original version of Tale Phantasia he came up with way back then.

That's a fun crossover, but tri-Ace is not involved in this. The developer for Valkyrie Anatomia is 7th Chord.

So the gen is ending in like 3 years and we haven't had a single 'current gen/not on the Xillia engine' Tales Of.

Wtf Namco?

Wouldn't a Switch release simply replace the ps3 in terms of limitations and therefor make the 'full jump to ps4' impossible?
No? Switch is fully current gen, supporting all of the current gen features and as such plenty of current engines (including Unreal Engine 4 that Bandai Namco already uses for a lot of their games and like will use for the next Tales game as well). What it lacks is amount of RAM and pure strength due to being limited by the handheld form factor which is comparably easy to adapt to.

I have been postponing finishing Zestiria for more than a month now. I want to defeat the final boss on chaos but I just can't stop thinking how tedious it is :P

How different is it from Zestiria? Cause I hate how limited it is in that game. Wasn't a big fan of Graces' AI either.

It's much better iirc. Rose doesn't really do a lot with her armatization.
In Berseria you can see some characters go on rampages and they frequently use their break soul and mystic artes. Eizen is super useful as an AI teammate because he almost instantly follows up stuns with his break soul. Same with Magilou and her spell interrupt.
And since healing is useless, you don't have to depend on the AI to handle that.

I think Graces is decent because you can actually assign characters them to be full-time casters that will avoid the enemy. They also combo well enough that you can follow up and stun lock bosses.

In our ongoing effort to co-op basically every existing mainline Tales game a friend and I have now reached Xillia.

It's clearly a lot of the same technology as what they (re-)used in Zestiria and Berseria, so what I really don't get is why the camera in this one basically works perfectly in co-op, while it is frequently problematic in the latter games. You'd think they wouldn't touch the working camera code.

It does look pretty nice in RPCS3 downsampled from 4k (though it currently needs a patch to fix the brightness level):

Are the Tales games fully playable on RPCS3? Last I tried you didn't even get to the title screen.

Xillia is fully playable (as long as you have a decently fast PC), with several caveats:
  • The brightness issue, which I have patched in my local build of RPCS3
  • Music can cut out depending on settings and hardware -- I found a setup for my system which makes it very rare
  • The original game runs at 30 FPS during exploration and 60 during battles. Whatever they did to implement these frame limits doesn't work in RPCS3 right now. So what I did is implement my framelimiter in RPCS3 and make it possible to toggle between 30 and 60 FPS using the gamepad. (This has the disadvantage of having to do it manually during battle load screens, but the added advantage that you have a "2x turbo" mode for traversal available)
  • On the title screen, the reflection doesn't render correctly. This one is amusing, since we haven't seen a single rendering bug in the actual game in 20 hours or so -- just the title screen. This would imply that they have a specific rendering pass that they only use for the title screen. Or maybe after the first 20 hours of the game.
So, I'd say it's at the "some assembly required" stage.
Personally, I find it preferable to play compared to PS3 even in this state, for 2 primary reasons: 4k rendering, and absolutely 0 load times everywhere.
