Started last week on PS4, about 15ish hours into it, everything is still quite confusing, especially weapon upgrading.

Up to the second region now.. I can go back later to finish up old missions, right? :/

Yup. You can just leave harder missions and re-visit them anytime. Even after completing the main game and moving onto NG+ It's simply a case of switching back to the normal difficulty and cleaning up any regions/sub missions you've missed.

As far as weapon upgrades are concerned I'd not worry too much about it in your first play-through. You can spend an absolute fortune re-forging and soul matching gear only to get a better drop on the very next mission. Maybe just try to get gear together for theset bonuses (wearing more then one of the same armour type) as they can help out early on. You can press L2 when equipping armour to see its stats and the bonuses you can get. Just remember you need to level up certain character attributes to get access to any potential benefits (it will tell you what skills are required at the bottom of the armours stats)

I honestly didn't really touch the blacksmith stuff until the third or fourth region.

Thank you, that's less for me to worry about then!

I've certainly noticed that the superior equipment drops thick and fast in this game, not that I'm complaining.

I always wondered why some of the other weapons didn't have the visual aesthetic the Raikiri has..the fact that it has lightning surging through it without the need to use an Amulet. Its nothing major but I like small details like that, I was kinda hoping I'd get a fire/water/earth/wind weapon with that same aesthetic later in the game. Oh well.

Umi-Bozu is an arsehole (yes I've lit all the flames)!

Umi-Bozu is super slow and predictable. Once you figure out when he'll throw ships at you and fire his main beam attack the rest is easy. Just stand in front of him with fire enchanted weapon (use the flames) and wail away.

Use your Kato living weapon in the second phase and he'll be done for.

edit: Just started my first play-through of the DLC. I was a bit worried about the difficulty but so far it's been pretty easy. I've level 170 or so and got some pretty good +6 gear so I'm probably just a little over levelled for it.

I was dreading the Date Shigezane fight as he looks absolutely brutal. One living weapon later he was toast. I was a rather disappointed TBH.

Man, I'm only level 122.

Hey Era I just got this game anything I should know before I jump in?
- Recommended levels for areas don't necessarily match your character's level, it's just the level of the loot drops you'll get.
- Learn to ki pulse, and use the skill trees to learn the ki-pulse-on-dodge skill as soon as you get samurai points.
- Blocking is effective, especially in mid-stance.
- Have fun :)

Have you played any Souls-likes before, btw?

OK, so you got a bit of a headstart over someone who didn't, but yeah, regain your stamina (ki) with ki pulse to play more aggressively, use stance switching as you see fit, and mix blocking and dodging liberally and you should be fine. :)

Is there a way to increase the amount of elixirs you get after praying at a shrine? I reached the depts of the third area and the enemies here hit so freaking hard!

Also how does pvp/pve work in this game? I see an option to summon someone but not to be summoned or to invade, I don't know how active the online community is in this game but I'd still like to try it as I go through the game.

The number of elixirs you regain at a shrine is determined by the amount of Kodama you have found in that particular region. The base amount is 3 and it goes up by one for each 5 kodama you find in the region.

Multiplayer Co-op has two flavors. One is a summon system similar to Souls. Summon help from a shrine and someone looking to assist folks gets summoned to your game. You apply to being summoned in the map screen, not while you're on a mission. The other is an option in the map screen called Yokai Realm, which has a number of unique mechanics to it, including revamped boss fight compositions, a mechanic to revive your partner within certain limits etc.

PvP is arena only, no invasions.

Damn, 5 kondama per elixir.. might have to go on suicide missions to see if I can find the rest since I've only encountered two on this area.

Ah I see, no wonder I couldn't find it, thanks.

I have a question about the weapons. I know damage scales with the affinity, but is there a way to see how much damage would do with max affinity? Let's say I have 2 katanas, one with max affinity and 100 damage, one with less affinity and 70 damage. How can I know if using the second one can surpass the damage of the first one?

If the weapons are the same rarity level (both blue, both purple, etc) then the one that's higher level will generally have more attack at max familiarity. There will be some exceptions if the weapons are only a couple levels apart but this is a good rule of thumb.

So for example:

Purple rarity level 15 katana at max familiarity with 100 attack.

Purple rarity level 17 katana at 0 familiarity with 70 attack.

The level 17 will generally have more attack at max familiarity.

Thanks, I imagine with different rarity it's not possible to know it?
Also I kinda like the lightning blade you get from the main story, since its output is surpassed by other weapons, is it worth to fuse it to level it up? I don't remember the name of the process

Soul Matching is what you are thinking and the answer is.... maybe? For one, the sword will be permanently added to the general loot pool after you acquire it, so you can randomly get a new, higher level version of it basically from anywhere. And while Raikiri is a decent sword early on, the static Spirit scaling special on it will make it less than optimal later on, when there are far better weapons to choose from.

Early on though, sure, go ahead and level it if you like it. Just keep in mind that every single level up you do with a Soul Match gives a cumulative penalty for further Soul Matches. Doing it twice is still pretty cheap, the 3rd one may or may not feel expensive, but the 4th one and beyond will, in general, cost more than you should pay. There are a few ways to play around those increasing costs, but they are more of a NG+ / end-game solution. While you're just doing the initial playthrough, it just isn't worth it. Everything you find will be replaced quite a few times.

Another question, am I supposed to be on-level with the story quests or it's normal to be underleveled?

You and your gear will always be lower level than the "recommended" level it puts on missions. That's not something you should really pay any mind to. Endgame gear is level 310-320 and there are missions with recommended levels of over a thousand.

On the highest difficulty, in the 3rd dlc the last missions are all over level 1100. My gear is level 300 and my character is level 658 and I can do these missions.

Jesús Christ this Tachibana fight (the one in the side mission) is ridiculous! I refuse to believe someone defeated this guy without grinding to hell and back first.

Is it just me or are some of the later bosses super easy? I just beat Obsidian Samurai and beat every boss after Okatsu sub 3 attempts.

I feel like the early bosses were a lot harder. It usually took me about 2 weeks till I beat bosses like Hino-Enma or Umi-Bozu.

I never grinded either. I just did a few side missions.

You understand how the game works better now. Obsidian Samurai is very easy.

The two hardest bosses in the game are human LW DLC bosses.

I've started this, and I was wondering if the passive abilities just work in general, or if I need to be holding the weapon for them to work?

So I've tried twice now to get into Nioh and with the price drop I thought I'd try again. The gameplay felt too technical for me for such a fast game and the armor system felt very Diablo-esque with its constant gear drops. What are some tips to get into Nioh for beginners? I could never get the hang of Ki Pulse and dispelling Yokai Fields and didn't like how it kind of added another layer to the gameplay. Basically I'm wondering if this is something I can power through or learn eventually, or if Nioh is always going to be a game I can't git gud at.

Ki Pulse is easier to do if you buy the abilities that let you use it by dodging, rather than standing still.

KI pulse isn't that hard, you just time R1 after you finish your attack. It'll come naturally after you've played a few hours. As for getting better, the game is difficult and requires patience. I had a very rough time starting out, but after 15-20 hours I got used to the mechanics of the game. As for beginner tips...

1. Use a spear and upgrade your skills to suit it properly. Learn its attack range and get used to moving within that space.
2. Make sure your agility is at least level B, so you can dodge properly.
3. Be patient when you attack an enemy, never rush.

This is one of those games that takes longer to become even decent at. Just be patient.
