Does anyone have any good custom meals saved? I mostly play charge blade and dual blades. I've been using the chef special mostly so far, but now I have most of the ingredients and the hunts are harder, so I figured I should start eating for the felyne bonuses a little more and just using a max potion for the health.
I always eat for Atk Up (L) so it's alway 6 meats but I have meals saved for Slugger, Moxie, Specialist, Pyro, Carver, and Lucky Cat depending on what weapon I'm using and what my goal in the hunt is. I usually default to something like Black Belt if the ingredients I want aren't fresh. Sharpshooter would be good if the game ever gave me a Normal Shot jewel and Bombadier is good for gunlancers.

I have moxie, sharpshooter and polisher saved all as attack L. Polisher just because I can't think of much else to use for lance.

Getting a decent amount of fresh meat ingredients is rarer than some fucking decorations in the game though, so they don't activate often. Shame there's no easy way to get/buy meal vouchers in the game! I'd pay extra money/points for increased freshness somehow.

The food system is the one thing I've just never had time for in these games. RNG loot is one thing, but RNG buffs? It's too much.

They really should have considered upping the frequency of fresh ingredients based on the number of optional food quests you've completed. If I've gone through the trouble of setting these cats up with like 30 different kinds of meat and they still can't hook me up with a fresh delivery, Gordon Ramsey needs to pay them a visit.

it all started as fun run all gs and that turned to this (I remember you said didn't have a proper gs set) , imagine if we all take more serious approach.

Hey now, I main Greatsword, all my sets are proper I would chose the term non-standard myself lol.

In any case, it might be really fun to see how fast we could go...or it could be really frustrating. Part of what was so fun about that is that it came about even though we were just messing around.

You can get them fairly easy through Poogie. Get him to love you by petting him after each mission, then take him (or wait for him to come to you) to the Handler. It doesn't activate every time, but four out of five times he will dig up a voucher at her feet.

That said, I almost never bother with custom meals. The skills hardly ever activate without vouchers, so I'd rather save myself the use of a max/ancient potion and get the full health boost instead, plus whatever skills that come with it.

Only exceptions are the really hard monsters, when some food skills can really make a difference.

I always try to get +50HP (or +40), with ATK(M) + Def (S), or ATK (S) + Def (M) if that's where the fresh food falls. Not carting is a bigger help than a few percentage of damage, I carted I think once in multiplayer in the last month, but failed a truckload of investigations due to other people carting. Using the potions triggers my hoarder instinct (megalixir issues from when I was a kid).

Speaking of that cart, what do you do against Vaal as a bow user when somone that was hanging way too far makes him reposition to a far side and he does a beam from across the map? Just pray that you can dodge through the beam both times?

The last two weeks the LR event quest in the arena has given meal tickets. You can farm those really quickly to get them. Not sure if that is true every week, though.

I've gotten a bunch of vouchers from doing the arena. Seems like it's random whether you get vouchers, well-done steaks, or lifepowers, but when it's vouchers I usually get 2-3 per quest.

Ugh, that's a long way to haul that mofo! :'(

My favourite is people engaging him on the second level (with the poison water) before anyone else moves up and running straight into his breath as you crest that hill (and the hitbox is a bit janky, it can clip through the floor). :(

At least as a lance user I can shuffle up there with my guard up.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for these. Hopefully some will come up in the spring event and I can farm.

Ugh, I really need to do some arena. Only proficient with two weapons though and I feel I need at least a few more.

So I just 'discovered' the SA... I don't know why I ignored this weapon for 250+ hours, because it's actually pretty cool. The impression I get from swinging it around in the training area is sort of a mix between GS, Hammer and CB. The looks and size of the GS, the mobility and damage of the hammer and the stance/phial juggling of the CB.

I also want to give the bow another chance, but my dps just feels so low, even with a Cera Coilbender, Elementless jewel and the Normal Shots + Spread/Power Shots skills.

Ugh, that's a long way to haul that mofo! :'(
True, but it will come to you if you just ignore it. I usually eat, manage my items and get a quest from the Handler. At that point Poogie is almost on top of the stairs to the canteen, so I just have to carry him a few steps to get my voucher.

The worst thing about Kushala is when you get a knockdown and rush up to the head to get some licks in but your positioning is just a little too close. Then this happens:

I have this experience a lot more often with Vaal, but I suspect they share knockdown animations.
I also want to give the bow another chance, but my dps just feels so low, even with a Cera Coilbender, Elementless jewel and the Normal Shots + Spread/Power Shots skills.

Despite the general preference toward high raw in this game, the Bow seems to be the primary weapon people are going elemental with. Cera Coilbender is still good for the crit draw build, but bow speeedruns tend to involve a weapon of the appropriate element for each monster.

There's some arena weapons you don't really need to be "proficient" with to use. Like, frankly Lance/Gunlance don't require knowing much of anything other than how to hold R2 and press triangle to get the job done.

There's obviously nuance to the weapons beyond that if you want maximum deepz but if you just need something for a one-time event clear they'll see you through just fine, no prior experience needed.

Have we tried grouping all up on the same session? I would love a chance to play more with you all.

You can get by in the arena with limited weapon skill for pretty much every quest. It may not be pretty, but if you don't care about grades (and why should you) it doesn't matter.

Yup, you can just flail around and still beat it. I was messing around with different weapon types and practicing with them during my first time.

Most: Odogaron, 40 times.
Least: Dodogama and Uragaan, 5 times.

Just completed my 400th hunt actually: Deviljho and its asinine hitboxes. Not a fun fight with a hammer.

crown hunting really boosted my Bazel numbers more than I wanted. it was so frustrating trying to get his Giant Crown since they all look the same, I just had to kill/cap every single encounter xD

Getting Teostra's crowns is super annoying, it is always normal size and the very few times it is smaller or larger it's never enough even for a silver.

I get so tired of my scout flies losing track because of the midgets deciding they want to fight. It's worse in the ancient forest because of the many ways to get lost

No one enjoys Lavashit

I'm not gonna say I enjoy him but I don't mind him. I use gunlance or dragon piercer against him so the fights are fast and painless.

Anyway, I thought getting crowns for Kirin will be a nightmare but I just got a perfect investigation for him. 15 minutes, 2 players, 1 faint and 4 gold rewards.

1st hunt - small gold
2nd hunt - big gold

I still have to kill him a ton tho as I want to have each monster with at lest 100kills/captures.

Jho is one of those fights you switch off hammer for like Vaal or Kushala.

I like Normal 2 LBG for Jho, lets me keep a distance and be mobile.
I actually find Vaal very easy to fight with a hammer.

It's just weird. First time I fought Jho was with a hammer and I trampled all over him. But I've been struggling to hit him with one ever since.

Just tried him with a LBG (Karma), but that wasn't a resounding success yet either. Most of his attacks could still easily hit me when I was anywhere in his critical distance zone.

If there is even a 1% chance of activating Felyne Slugger we have to treat it as an absolute certainty!

I alway gun Vaal so I haven't had that experience but they both seem to share knockdown animations with Nerg and Teo but those two don't have that stupid hook shaped head/neck.

Is that Discord squad still full? I feel like I've only hunted with a handful of posters in this thread.

Here's a spreadsheet someone made of all the ingredients and the combinations to get certain meal skills.

https://www.reddit.com/r/MonsterHunter/comments/7w5efw/mhw_canteen_ingredient_list/

In addition to getting your pig to like you by petting him after every mission ( he'll do a big super jump when he LOVES you!), take him to where you handler sits and eats across from the Canteen. Drop him there next to the handler. He will dig up a voucher sometimes.

Also, I've noticed that Arena quests/challenges gives out vouchers, as well as requesting trade in items from the Argosy ship. It won't always come in with the Argosy, but its frequent enough.

I wish I could leech you that investigation, I'm still missing it and Teostra and I don't have any decent ones to even try to spawn them.

Any advice for a new Long Sword user? Just picked up using it now and while I've gotten the jist of swinging it around us there anything specific worth knowing?
