While the book is on backorder now, it is most likely because it was stealth released and retailers didn't know about it, so they couldn't get it from the publisher. It should show up easily in a few weeks, and even in some stores too.

Oliver said on "Ellen" that they were overwhelmed with the response to the book which is why it's out of stock and going to a second printing.

Jon will usually say whether they're off or not the following week at the end of the show, but I can't remember if he said it last week.

just watched last week's episode. the book thing was like the most masterful troll job i've ever witnessed, and it was done beautifully and for a good cause.
i also thought that we would never actually see the show's studio audience ever, i was surprised that the cameras finally showed them.

So the judges in those courts are fine with sending asyl seekers back to their countries and letting them be killed there?

Yeah, those videos are both the most adorable and most heartbreaking thing you put into one package. Good thing the ending turned that on its head.

But seriously, what kind of adult would argue that a three year old understands ANYTHING? I mean, they can't even read yet at that point. How does a grown ass man just pretend that's not a thing? Keep in mind that quote was from 2015...

edit:

btw, segment is up on Youtube:

Bloody heartbreaking, it's one of the reasons I distrust our own immigration laws here in Sweden too, it has a tendency to send back innocent people that could very well end up dead on returning to their home country.

That honestly blew my mind, had no idea that was actually being done. 3 or 4 year old kids alone in a courtroom, surreal. This was a great episode because it shed light on an issue that doesn't make it to the news that often. The numbers thrown around were insane, imagine having to wait 5 years for your case. It's safe to say the entire system is indeed broken.

Jesus, that was awful. Who in their right minds can defend that shit?

The ending sketch with H. Jon Benjamin was amazing by the way. That banana joke is my shit.

For those looking to learn even more about the way the immigration court proceedings work for children, I would highly recommend "Tell Me How It Ends: An Essay in 40 Questions." It's written by someone who translated for the children in their intake questionnaire; the book is framed around the 40 questions they're asked. It's a short read, but illuminating: https://www.amazon.com/Tell-Me-How-Ends-Questions/dp/1566894956

Glad that the topic got a dedicated segment on Last Week Tonight.

The joke about Ken Burns Vietnam documentary was absolutely true. I watched the first 2-3 chapters and have had the remaining 7 sitting on my DVR for 5 months now. I'm moving in 2 months, so I'm not going to be in the mood to watch them anytime soon and I probably would never get around to watching them anyway because they're just too depressing.

Just caught the UK showing. That's depressing stuff. I had no idea you could end up in court without a lawyer. That's insane.

On the subject of Immigration Judges, some movement (not good movement, though)

Trump administration, seeking to speed deportations, to impose quotas on immigration judges
The Trump administration will pressure U.S. immigration judges to process cases faster by establishing a quota system tied to their annual performance reviews, according to new Justice Department directives.

The judges will be expected to clear at least 700 cases a year to receive a "satisfactory" performance rating, a standard that their union called an "unprecedented" step that risks undermining judicial independence and opens the courts to potential challenges.

Toddlers representing themselves in court. In an industrialized, first-world country. I have no fucking words.

Are they just depressing, or is it presented in a boring manner as well? I think I'd enjoy a depressing but informative documentary series on Vietnam, but they're not available digitally for me.

Just saw this segment, never knew about this. Absolutely fucking bizarre. I'm speechless.

From an article in the Washington Post from 2016:

Although a network of pro bono organizations and a Justice Department program try to help children find attorneys — some paid for by the government — many children are forced to fend for themselves. According to Justice Department figures, 42 percent of the more than 20,000 unaccompanied children involved in deportation proceedings completed between July 2014 and late December had no attorney. It is unclear how often children 5 or younger are forced to defend themselves, but attorneys and advocates for immigrants said it does happen.

Senate Minority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) and other Democrats this month introduced a bill mandating government-appointed counsel for children in immigration court who had crossed the border alone or are victims of other duress such as abuse, torture or violence. In a Feb. 11 speech on the Senate floor, Reid said he was told about one case in which a 5-year-old girl was brought before an immigration judge.

"This little girl was clutching a doll and was so short she could barely see over the table to the microphone,'' Reid said. "She was unable to answer any questions that the judge asked her except for the name of her doll: 'Baby Baby Doll.' That was the name of her doll."

At such hearings, children face the same types of immigration charges as adults, ranging from entering the country illegally to overstaying their visas. The children — most of whom cannot speak English and must use government-provided interpreters — are generally asked questions by judges such as when they arrived in the United States and whether they faced persecution in their home countries, according to court documents and immigration attorneys.

But the questions can easily trip up children with no lawyers, the attorneys said. A judge may ask, for example, if the child wants to leave the country voluntarily or would rather be ordered deported. If the child chooses either option, he or she cannot apply for other forms of immigration relief such as asylum in the United States.

In the Seattle case, the ACLU is arguing that failure to provide counsel for indigent children in immigration court violates the U.S. Constitution and federal immigration laws.

You probably then don't wanna watch Samantha Bee's show too.
I already do.... and yes those were horrifying too. But, somehow, it's less... shall we say, bizarre, or baffling, than the idea of toddlers, who may not even speak English, being expected to defend themselves in court. How does this not at least fall to the guardian??

I don't get these lunatics that believe the womans primary role is to spit out babies (because they are opposed to contraceptions) regardless of the circumstances of conception, or capability to take care of the new family.

Like, what is the desired end state for these people?

Havent seen the main segment yet but one quick question.

What the fuck was that "The Doctors" clip!? I think that was a montage of the things but that was still embarrassingly stupid beyond belief!

abortion is illegal in so many countries (including mine), it's always sad to see even in countries that are considered progressive and "first world" where it's legal there are still people fighting so hard against it and are fighting to limit a woman's choices concerning her own body.
that woman in the end talking about cutting the women off once the baby is born proves that pro-life just means anti-abortion. they don't give a fuck about the baby or the mother, they just want the baby to be born and then they can't care less what happens.
