February Update:

Finished up the last few games lingering from last year. Had a lot of fun playing Nioh, but called it quits after finishing all of the main story missions (the post-game stuff felt very grind-y). Blew through Yakuza Kiwami next; not as good as 0, for sure, but still a great time overall. Will probably jump ahead to Yakuza 6 at some point later in the year. Celeste has been my lunchtime game that I've been plugging away at this month, but I may try to beat it this weekend as I feel like I'm getting close to the end. Between that and Splatoon 2, I've been ignoring Skyrim a bit...need to get back to that. And finally, I broke out the SNES Classic and did my long-overdue replay of LTTP.

Going to be starting my first ever Final Fantasy game soon...yay!

Bought (-1):
  1. Celeste (Switch)
Beaten (+3):
  1. Nioh (PS4)
  2. Yakuza Kiwami (PS4)
  3. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES Classic)
Currently Playing:
  1. Celeste (Switch)
  2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Switch)
Backlog Priorities:
  1. Final Fantasy XV (PS4)
  2. Super Mario World (SNES Classic)
  3. Thief: Deadly Shadows (PC)
  4. Donkey Kong Country (SNES Classic)
  5. Xenoblade Chronicles X (Wii U)
Bought in 2018: 8
Beat in 2018: 5
Current Score: -3
March Update:

Didn't play a whole lot this month as I was on vacation for part of it, but did finish a couple games. Beat Celeste (which was great), and replayed most of the levels to find secrets before eventually burning out on it; this one strawberry just broke me.

Just finished my first Final Fantasy game, so I'm off the schneid in that regard. It was good, but I'm not sure yet if I'm going to go back to it and do more side content. After the hard-left turn the game makes with the second half of the story, I feel like I've lost too much interest in jumping back into that world.

And then there's Skyrim, which I keep picking at little by little. I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to go with it, because the bugginess is really interfering with my ability to have fun with the game. I really do need to go a bit further down the main quest path before deciding one way or the other, though; I do owe it at least that.

Back to the SNES Classic for a bit in the meantime. As for what's coming up later in the month, God of War is the first big new game of 2018 that I'm really excited for. It's been a pretty quiet year so far otherwise, although I do want to check out Monster Hunter and Far Cry.

Backlog Notes:
I've sold off my Xbox One S, but not the games that go with it, except GTAV. They've been "removed" from my backlog in the sense that I moved them to the wishlist in my Backloggery, but I'm not deleting them entirely. When I get an X, I'll add them back in, but I won't be doing anything numbers wise.
Humble Bundle - I got the Sony Humble Bundle, but I honestly only wanted two games. Of the two, Valkyria Chronicles is just a move from Steam to PS4, while I don't know if I actually PLAN on playing Mega Man Anniversary Collection. So I don't add anything :D
Puyo Puyo Tetris (Steam) - double dip.

A +4 month, which I'm pretty happy with. I imported God of War from the UK because the Limited Edition was completely sold out in NZ, so my initial plan was to finish as much of Yakuza 6 as I could before it arrived. Turns out it's probably the easiest plat in the Yakuza series and wrapping up every mini-game doesn't take too long, so I ended up beating it with plenty of time to spare and God of War still hasn't arrived. Great game though, a fitting end to Kiryu's story. Other highlights include Killzone: Mercenary (been sitting in my backlog for like three years, great handheld FPS), Minit (one of my favourite games so far this year) and SoulCalibur 2 HD (as good as I remember it but completely ruined my thumb on the Dual Shock 3's hard old dpad).

April Update:

Another busy month where I didn't get a ton of time to play as much as I wanted. Did the entirety of SMW for the first time, which I'm happy about. And I'm very absorbed in God of War at the moment; it has the feel of a game that I want to 100% complete.

Also got a great deal on an Xbox One X over the weekend, which included Assassin's Creed as part of the bundle. Normally I wouldn't count this towards my backlog as I've been off the AC bandwagon since III and really just wanted the deal, but Origins is a game I've thought about wanting to play eventually. Far Cry 5 and Monster Hunter: World will probably be first up for the X.

Haven't touched Skyrim in a while, been mostly been using the Switch for Rocket League. Have some long flights this week, though, so I'm going to try and get back into it.

And finally, I moved Xenoblade Chronicles X down the backlog priorities for now. It was one of my goals for 2018, but I don't think it's going to happen. I've already played too many big 50+ hour games so far this year, but I see several more big games coming up in my near future, and Xenoblade is just going to be too much. Rather than getting burned out on big open-world games again, I think I'm going to chip away at my Halo backlog and SNES Classic games instead.

April: +15

It has been a bad month (even if the stats might say otherwise) and it has taken its toll on me. Bad things have happened in my life, I am quite sick and a couple of days ago I just broke down and realised I have no motivation at all to play most of my backlog games, or almost any game at all.
Meaning this will probably be the last month for quite some time where I make this much progress with backlog stuff, at least in beaten games. I am gonna spend my game time with longer games I am familiar with and those will take me hundreds of hours each to feel "done" with. So even if I don't actually beat many more games I will have made a huge progress in the backlog, in a way.
Hopefully I don't go and impulse buy anything that I won't be playing, so numbers should still be in the green for the rest of the year.

First off, heres my last post: https://www.resetera.com/posts/5077280/

So, I haven't updated in a while and I've been pretty bad lately. PUBG get most of my gaming time, but I'm finally going to mark it as "beaten" since I have like 250 hours in and it's playtime is dwindling since the kids are about out of school.

Fake Edit: Now that I looked back and got this all typed up, I guess I had an OK couple months, actually. Praise be:

So...
2018 Totals: -2

God of War (platinum)
Wolfenstein II (including all DLC)

Removed from backlog (+1):
Battlestar Galactica Deadlock

Bought (0):
Nothing bought

Total score to date (+13)

God of War took a lot of time, also played a couple of "free games" from GwG/Gamepass that don't count towards scoring.

Completely dropping the Battlestar Galactica game as it's way too tedious and there is zero fun in it for me.

Funny how a month where I beat 8 games can end up with almost the same + score as a month where I beat 22 games (March). I am happy and a bit impressed by how few games I have bought this year compared to many other years. I ended 2017 on +38 despite finishing 90 games and I am currently sitting on +66 for 2018 with 89 beaten games.
There were a couple of games I wanted to get. I was really close to pressing the buy button on Detroit for example, but since I am gonna focus on the Summer Challenge (hype!) for the next couple of months it would be silly to get some other new game when I already got State of Decay 2 recently.

My imported copy (because it was sold out here back in like January) of the God of War Special Edition arrived way too late for my liking, so I finished a few short games while I waited and then played the absolute hell out of it once it arrived. Amazing game, probably my game of the year. And then once that was done, I spent most of the rest of the month playing Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep and then Valkyria Chronicles, both because they've got sequels coming later in the year. Oh and while the Steam backlog mini-event was a bit lame because it came out of nowhere, it did make me take another look at my Steam backlog for the first time in a while. So I finished Evoland, started To The Moon and really want to get back into Divinity: Dragon Commander but my save is mid-second chapter and I have no idea what's going on.

My backlog is massive. I would like some ideas on which games to go to next, but here is a list that undoubtedly misses a lot of what there actually is.

Mass Effect 1 - Playing now
Mass Effect 2 - Xbox One
Mass Effect 3 - Xbox One
Mass Effect Andromeda - Xbox One
Red Dead Redemption - Xbox One
Metro 2033 - Xbox One
Metro Last Light - Xbox One
Metal Gear Solid 5 - Xbox One
Division - Xbox One
Witcher 3 - Xbox One
Shadows of War - Xbox One
Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag - Xbox One (Pretty far into this - But haven't played any in ages)
Assassin's Creed Unity - Xbox One
Assassin's Creed Syndicate - Xbox One
Assassin's Creed Origins - Xbox One
Resident Evil 5 - Xbox One
Resident Evil 6 - Xbox One
Resident Evil 7 - Xbox One
Borderlands: PreSequel - Xbox One
Evil Within - Xbox One
Evil Within 2 - Xbox One
Deus Ex: Mankind United - Xbox One
Gears of War 2 - Xbox One
Gears of War 3 - Xbox One
Gears of War 4 - Xbox One
Gears of War: Judgement - Xbox One
Halo 5 - Xbox One
Bioshock 1 - Xbox One
Bioshock 2 - Xbox One
Bioshock Inifnite - Xbox One
Batman: Arkham Knight - Xbox One
WatchDogs 2 - Xbox One
Prey - Xbox One
Farcry 4 - Xbox One
Farcry Primal - Xbox One
Ori and the Blind Forest - Xbox One
The Walking Dead Season 2 - Xbox One
The Wolf Among Us - Xbox One
Game of Thrones - Xbox One
Horizon - PS4
Last of Us - PS4 (Played a little but haven't played in forever)
Final Fantasy XII - PS4
Nioh - PS4
Nier - PS4
Tales of Berseria - PS4

Some suggestions of what to go to next, what games I could conceivably beat quickly, and etc would be nice. I generally don't want to play later games in a series before I beat earlier games if they relate.

Some games I recently beat in the past few months...

Cuphead
Arkham Asylum
Arkham City
Resident Evil Remake
Resident Evil 0
Resident Evil 4
Wolfenstein 2
Rise of the Tomb Raider
Tales from Borderlands
Dead Rising 4
FFXV
Guitar Hero Live
Destiny 2
Fallout 4

Bioshock 1-2 are some of my fav games. Not too long, especially if you are not a completionist.
Other not too long or way outdrawn experiences would be games like the Gears series and The Last of Us.
You have a couple of Telltale games. Those are super easy and relatively short.
Prey is a game I have not played yet but it seems both good and not overly long.

I was thinking about knocking out Resident Evil 5 next. Just to work closer to Resident Evil 7.

(I just finished Mass Effect 1 right now).

Metro series is relatively short also I think.

I will consider Bioshock. Gonna read up about a couple of these games while at work tomorrow and pick one to start shortly.

I am sort of a Completionist, but if something is ridiculous to do, I will skip it.

New Game Total - -5

May 2018 Backlog Blitz Total: +7 -5 = +2

Not a bad month! I reviewed a lot of games, so pretty much every that was added was also beaten. I don't plan on reviewing nearly as much this month, so I should be making more actual backlog progress this month. Of course, there is the Steam Summer Sale, but tbh my Wish List there is getting a bit slim, so I probably won't buy much.

June Update

New Games (-):
The Banner Saga 2
Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon

A +4 month, getting me to +20 overall, but it didn't really feel like it because most of the month was spent playing Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance. It was a bit of a slog, so I ended up taking a break from it at one point to finally finish Divinity: Dragon Commander and then try my best to keep up with all the E3 coverage. I did eventually finish Dream Drop Distance though, putting me only one short game and video away from being all caught up on KH. I also managed to finish To The Moon and The Last Express, all of which have been in my backlog for years and years, alongside Divinity: Dragon Commander.

Next month I should quickly finish Assassin's Creed: Origins and then I want to move onto Kingdom Hearts 0.2 and then Hitman (2016). With Hitman 2 coming out later this year, I've finally motivated myself to finish the first one.

It's the last day of June, so it's time for the Q2 Backlog Blitz update!

As is always the case with me, my motivation tends to waiver for the challenge during this time of year, though the reasons are a bit different than usual. I got a new job, and also got some nice freelancing opportunities, so that ate up a lot of my free time. Also, a lot of the games I've beaten were review games, which come out as a wash in most of my stats. April was a wash at 0, and I got a small positive in May at +2. As usual I have a negative in June with the triple combo of my birthday, E3 eating up free time, and the Steam Summer sale, so that's -4. However, I've maintained a much higher average than usual with my score this year, and I'm still in the double digit positive overall:

4IT3S3n.png

KQGrZXS.png

My score now is +11, which I'm pretty proud of! As for the upcoming quarter... I may buy one or two more games in the Summer Sale, I haven't decided, but I don't see me getting anything else other than cheap sale games and Yakuza Kiwami 2 through the end of September. My financial situation isn't what it used to be, so I don't really have the means to buy a ton of games at higher prices anyway. Works out better for my wallet and my backlog! On Backloggery my unfinished games are under 20% too, so I'm chipping away at the games I have sitting around.

I haven't made much progress of my Alphabet Challenge, but it's still there for when I don't know what to play. I'm running the Summer Gaming Challenge right now, which is fun, but I've only just beat my first game for that... nine more to go haha. I'm still playing Monster Hunter with friends, but I am focusing more on the backlog now that the E3 rush of writing a billion news and opinion articles as ended.

So yeah, here's to three more months! I'll make my July post soon. :)

Finally got to play Overcooked with my spouse! Super fun, but I think I'm on my own for the "three-star everything" trophy (...and VS mode probably ain't gonna happen either)

2018-09-22: Booting up my 360 for the first time in 5 years, I forgot I bought all those Capcom Arcade Cabinet games back in 2013 and never played them. Fucking yikes—but this is one of the reasons I started participating in these threads. Too much buying sure, but really not enough playing. :|

Spent the majority of this month focusing on newer games, and breaking in my Xbox One X. 100%'d God of War, and nearly did the same with Far Cry.

June Update:

So many big games, still, but they've all been great so I can't complain too much. Finally have been focusing on Skyrim a bit and making some serious progress. I might actually finish it this year!

Been thinking about how the rest of the year is going to shape up. There's the "Big 4" of Red Dead, Smash, Spider-Man and Hitman. I was planning to check out Vampyr and the two Yakuza games, but I feel like the Shenmue HD release might change that up a bit.

After so many new games, though, I think July-September are going to be mostly for backlog stuff. I'm just not sure which games I want to do, just yet. Picked up System Shock 2 during the Steam sale, and I'm really looking forward to finally playing that. Penciling that in as my Halloween game for now.

Bought (-2):
  1. System Shock 2 (PC)
  2. Hollow Knight (Switch)

I've spent so much time this year slowly chipping away at big games (Witcher 3 DLCs and Mass Effect) and going back to some multiplayer games because my wife wants someone to play with. Especially Mass Effect became quite a bore after a while because I can't help but do all of the side content, so I've also been booting up games I wasn't very excited about, to see if I should keep it on my backlog or not. For the most part the answer has been a resounding No.

Things are changing up in July however, and I hope I'm on a slightly different trend in my next update.

Had a procedure done this month and also started playing Persona 4 Golden on my Vita. Between both of those, really haven't had time to knock out games I haven't played before. Kinda proud of myself that I didn't buy too much considering I've been bedridden and light activity tho.

Playing 3 RPGs can't concurrently? Bless you.

I'm currently playing Persona 4 Golden And Kingdom Hearts And I just don't see how I could fit a third in.

Haha, yeah, normally I try to have a little more variety when juggling games, but it's been working out due to outside influences: been doing some travel for work and will be visiting my parents this month, so Octopath is my go-to "away from home" game. I find myself burning out on Lightning Returns if I play for long stretches due to the Dead Rising-like timer system, so I'm basically just completing one in-game day every weekend and then putting it down, and finally The Witcher is my backup for when I'm in front of the PC and want to listen to some podcasts. I may switch it up though if I feel like I'm not making enough progress as I do have a couple of shorter games to jump to.

I sympathize though - Persona games have always been some of the toughest to manage with other games (especially RPGs). I feel like it's really hard to go back to if you're not playing consecutively as there's so many stats and social links to keep track of.

Another great month. I finished up AC Origins from last month, finished my last KH game, bought and finished Bridge Constructor Portal and finished three other games from my backlog (Hitman, RECVX and DriveClub Bikes). Hitman was the stand out amongst all those, it has a bunch of amazing levels to mess around in (and a couple of dud ones) and I was really addicted to it for a week or two. KH 0.2 also managed to get me really excited for KH3 next year and I really enjoyed DriveClub Bikes (RIP Evolution).

Now I'm playing Tales of Symphonia and it feels like I'm going to be playing this for the next 2-3 weeks. That's fine, though I'd like to finish one or two more games before Yakuza Kiwami 2 comes out in late August.
