Detroit: Become Human is our IGN First game for April, which means we've editorially chosen to take a look at it all month long. We traveled to Quantic Dream, and we'll be bringing you more on the next game from the studio that brought you Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls.

To say that Detroit: Become Human has a lot of player choice may end up being the understatement of the year in gaming. In this new look at the cinematic PS4 adventure game from inside Quantic Dream's Paris-based development studio, we talked to the team about why the player's choices will truly matter

Can I choose to skip shower scenes?

Is there one in the video? At work so can't check.

That being said, player choice is always great but most games don't make it amount up to much in the end. I was really disappointed with Until Dawn as rather than your choices having any real consequences it was usually moreso you failing in a QTE.

SPOILERS: You have to make lots of choices in our game. It was difficult to make this game with so many choices. Also, there are lots of choices.

Man I think Sony is blowing its load with all this preview coverage of its upcoming games? Why not let God of War come out before promoting the next game? I worried this will get buried under all the PS news lately.

So QD is directly addressing the biggest complaint about Beyond...good. next, let's see if the story is batshit crazy and the dialogue is hammy as hell.

I will say this much. Your choices in Heavy Rain mattered way more than your average Telltale adventure game (pre Batman).

Still don't trust the writing.

Really hoping this is good. If not, at least the Best Friends LP will still be hilarious.

Heavy Rain is still one of the very few games of its ilk where some of the choices you make can make a significant difference to the narrative, and the fact that Cage said there are entire scenes you can miss in Detroit based on your decisions already confirms that it will be much more open-ended than Beyond: Two Souls. One of the most disappointing aspects about that game was that the story did not alter at all until the very end, so playing it just felt like the player was on total autopilot. It sounds like QD have made a conscious effort to avoid that pitfall this time and focus more on what made Heavy Rain so successful, so I'm pleased to hear that.

Nice to see Adam Williams listed as "lead writer." I'm not aware of any of his previous work, but I've got to assume he's a better writer than David Cage.

The video is a little redundant, because everyone basically says the same thing, but it sure makes the point. Lots of choice & consequence in this game. That's good. Cage's games have their flaws, but they do choice & consequence at a level no one else does. I'm looking forward to playing it.

So what team are you guys?

Team Kara

Team Connor

or Team Markus
Kara all the way, I'm kinda disappointed that she's not the sole main character like we originally thought she would be after the reveal trailer. Although I hope she has more to do rather than running away and protecting the little girl.

If you already know there's one, then you probably already know if it can be skipped.
Are game overs still a failure in game design?
It's quite interesting that some developers work the failure of a player into the plot of the game rather than just asking the player to try again until he gets it just right. So while the wording might be a bit harsh, the idea is not without merit.

Really glad that it'll be more like Heavy Rain as has been mentioned in Beyond: Two Souls there really wasn't any consequence until the very end.

Really looking forward to this one.

It looks spectacular and I enjoy this kind of near future aesthetic. Interested to know more about the soundtrack too. Finding myself drawn more and more to games and movies with great soundtracks.

Agreed. This is right in my wheelhouse.
Also, same here on the soundtrack, in the previous thread, I think when we got the release date, I also mentioned how much the music in the footage and conference gameplay has sounded really promising.

Loved Heavy Rain and think this looks great.

What the hell is up with Sony this month? lol

They got a new God of War releasing April 20th and the marketing campaign is rolling... but then they choose this month to blow out Spiderman info and marketing and now Detroit

Anecdotal i know but FWIW, my gf just preordered it and plans to play it together when she stays over at my place .

Genuinely curious about the % of sales to non-'core' gamers for these type of games.

Choice and consequence is what gave me huge respect for Heavy Rain, even if I think everything to do with the story, characters and writing are pretty bad. Conversely, the lack of any real choice and consequence in Beyond left that game with nothing but Cage's writing to fall back on, and sure enough it was a laughable shitshow, so I'm really glad to see they've gone back to the good stuff for Detroit.

Something... something... arrogant Sony... something.

Probably a good sign, lots of confidence in GoW. :)

I feel like we've done this song and dance many many times before. Basically every narrative game talks about how it offers players meaningful choices. The proof will be in the pudding once the game actually releases
