Really amazing stuff so far. Everything has been fantastic.

I have been doing art a long time. 38 years now. Have done a lot of different styles over the years. Right now I mainly just do portraits on my iPad Pro when I can, which is not very often. Adobe has featured a few which has been cool.

Here is most of what I have done the past 2 years.

A few of my personal favorites.

My cat Mason who passed away. Did every stroke by hand. Did it about a week after he left us and it took me about a month. When I finally opened it in Illustrator, there was close to 1.8 Million Anchor Points. BY FAR the most detailed piece I have personally done. It was my way of saying goodbye to him.

I approach these as I would a painting as that is what I know and how I did art for most of my life. So I really view that blank white screen on the iPad the same as I would view a blank white canvas. I try not to do anything digitally I do not think I could not do non digitally. Just my own approach and it is holding me back, I realize it. Just trying to bridge the gap of my two "lives" in art.

Drew another character. Wouldn't mind some criticism. Also I really need to learn to make all edits before coloring. Makes coloring a pain. lol.

Wow, you all have some amazing skills! :)
It's a little messy, but here is a piece of Samus Aran art I created today:
(Done completely in Photoshop with a mouse...my drawing tablet is unfortunately down)

Looks pretty sound, just a few crits:
  • Remember to keep the character's proportions pretty symmetrical unless there's an intentional reason otherwise.
  • You have shadow where light should be, etc, needs to be more consistent. Keep the direction of the light source in mind. Lighting in anime often works similarly to how it does IRL in that shadows are where the light source cannot reach and highlights are where the light source shines brightest on the character.
  • When adding shading to areas you also want to keep in mind things like how the clothing folds and bends.

Really cool! I like the red backlighting, it gives a lot of depth to the colors.

Just one thing, did you scale up the line art before coloring? There's some messy steps in the lines in places. Otherwise great.

OH! Yes, you are right...I meant to go back and tidy those up! Also, some of the anatomy is off...I may update the file whenever I can fix the issues in it. Thank you for the kind words and for bringing that to my attention! :)

Hi, sadly the excellent Art Self Study thread doesn't have a lot of traction (which is a shame) so Ive been asked to insert their excellent OP, which is FULL of EXCELLENT resources into our own OP. So I just did that.

We're in the process of getting the 2nd post in there as well, that should happen shortly.

Also, a reminder that this thread is NOT ONLY for finished work. Literally anything you're working on is welcome here so dont be afraid to let us know what youre doodling :)

I'm sooooo bad at committing to darks. I have to start pushing myself on that front more.
it's definitely a struggle. you can just lay them down like you did in that sketch and get progressively darker, and when you start to understand value more it gets easier to just start going dark from the getgo. I'm also trying to push darks in my own drawings, it's definitely difficult haha.

I might as well ask here too. I used a randomizer (built in Calc) to generate new characters, just to get to draw unexpected stuff. Which one of these should I continue with?

Hey everybody, just wanted to post an in-progress shot of a mural design I'm working on, plus a few other sketches. For the mural I got to work with a group of students as well as suggestions from the residents of the building the wall we're doing it on overlooks, and we started with the residents' suggestions of houses and birds, and the kids did a bunch of bird drawings and chose the slogan. I basically worked out the composition and background ideas of with with them, did the clip-art-ifying of their drawings, and added some birds of my own.

I'll post an update with some prelim colors later too! Everyone's stuff in here is great, I may post some in progress comics stuff soon as well!

And to those doing more character based stuff, I'd really REALLY recommend doing gesture sketches. A lot of them. They'll be stuff that teaches your brain proportion control. When you can draw "shape people" that have proper proportion and weight the finishing is almost incidental. This is really counter-intuitive to the beginning mind that wants to see fancy results right away, but pays ridiculous dividends.

I've been trying to quicken/simplify both my "layout pencils" and "finished inks" a lot more by doing fast proportion based sketches that are purposefully loose, then going in and trying to render them out quickly as well, to keep myself from getting precious and also to keep getting faster. Been looking at a lot of Mike Mignola and Cameron Stewart stuff recently too.

Hi! I been motivating myself to do some finished art(and to actually share it). This is titled "Lucy Fur: The Great Sate Nyan". It took about 15 hours in photoshop. I've only done a handful of pieces in this painted style and never drawn a cat before. I mostly like the sumi pentagram and the sword.

I decided to pick up an Intuos Paper last week as I have been wanting to get into art, specifically drawing. I had no idea how to use photoshop, either, so Ive been spending most of my free time on some Udemy courses for Photoshop and Illustrator. Finally felt comfortable enough to actually start drawing today. I used to draw all the time when I was a kid. I quit when I joined the military. Its been 20 years since Ive drawn something. I decided to do it the right way now as Im sure when I was a kid I had some horrible habits as I was self taught. I figure it would be smart to start off with an anatomy course. I also wanted to draw something fun, too.

oof I forget to check this thread for a couple weeks and its chock full of amazing work. I'll have to catch up.

Here's a fun piece. I haven't used prismacolor pencils all that often but I had a great time using them here. It did take a lot of time to actually fill in the color so next time I think I will just use markers or watercolor for the base color and use the prismacolor pencils for shading. You can find more of my work on my twitter and insta

and here are process pics

Did this with some some Prismacolor NuPastels. I had planned on making the background more of a gradient but I feel it has its own charm with being purely flat. Who knows.

I've been searching for comic book inks to color over the last few weeks. Mixed results. Debating whether or not to post here. Don't know if I can handle it, lol.

I want to brush up techniques on drawing the torso (even better if the hips are part of the equation).

Any advice or tutorial links?? Youtube is a pretty mixed bag so far

Torso and hips you want to draw their alignment really early to set the proper balance (meaning, draw the spinal cord line, then the shoulder line then the hips line). Proper distance is usually one head distance from chin to nipples (females) bottom of pec (males), one head down from there is the belly button and one head down from there is the crotch.

As per "how to draw them" on males you want to break down the pectoral into three muscles that taper at the shoulder, The best way is to study the skeletal strcuture, then a muscle diagram and then see it on a naked model to understand how much skin covers shit up ... after that its just draw 30 of them in a row, 1 minute each and I bet youll see some progress.
