Just something I've been thinking about due to the movie. I remember the NES version being the first game where I eagerly sunk hours into it as an attempt to master it (think it had like 100 levels, and I got to around the 80s before I gave up). Loved the heck out of it, but it's also the only version I've ever played.

So, curious what is overall considered the definitive release.

My favorite Rampage was the Pride Era. His second fight with Wanderlei Silva in particular was tops.

I always kinda liked Rampage World Tour for the N64.

I'm sure this is not one of the best versions of this game. But the N64 was great for pick-up and play three player multi-player. Also, the last of loading times was a bonus in comparison to the Sega Saturn and PS1 versions.

I only ever played the N64 World Tour and Universal Tour versions. My brother and I one day took the time to beat World Tour in one sitting. It got really boring by the end but I'll always remember finding the toxic slime you could eat to become the bat thing. Good times.

I played world tour on N64 a lot back in the day. Was fun doing local multiplayer with a friend. I doubt that game holds up today, though.

The best part of the N64 games were those space levels at the end of the game. You would go to the moon and destroy space buildings.

The one from the Midway Arcade Origins collection is a port of the arcade version, which is good.

Master System has a far superior port compared to the NES version, from what I remember.

The Atari Lynx version of Rampage was an amazing effort. While the original arcade game supported up to three players, the Lynx version added a fourth monster to the original cast of three, so four could play simultaneously. There were also a few added items, including powerup potions (different ones for each character) that would enable your monster to become invincible and invisible to other players for the remainder of the level. It's still my favorite version of the game.

The Atari Lynx version for having four-player support.

EDIT: Beaten!

Correct. Absolutely the best. Also it has a real friggin campaign akin to World Tour.

Another video for good measure.

I don't like how World Tour's buildings are all sectorized. Original Rampage & Lynx Rampage play best.

The recent VR Rampage is definitely one of the worst, but it's still cool how much they managed to bring to VR. It's just a buggy mess, but it's lots of fun. Also it's free.

Lynx > Arcade > World Tour Arcade > WT other platforms > VR Rampage (2018) > all others

I actually just watched a video on some Ramage ports yesterday:

Had no idea some of the versions had extra characters.

Arcade obviously. Best console port of the 1st game is probably Sega Master System.

N64 version, although when you realize it's infinite and has no end, so you have to tap out after about a half hour

World Tour is the one that always clicked the most with me. The original game and all its ports always seemed to be a bit too clunky and cheap, while all of World Tour's sequels just felt like they were adding on far to much on a simple and fun formula.

I have no idea what version it was but I assume the regular arcade version.

Back in the early 2000s I used to play Rampage and all the other Midway arcade games a ton on Shockwave.com.

This gets my vote too.

I think Rampage Through Time on PS1 is the most fun. It loses the "purity" of Rampage, but I love the extra characters and Super abilities, and I genuinely think the mini games help break up the inevitable monotony of the Rampage series. Also, the more varied environments help too.

At it's core though Rampage is simply too repetitive. It gets old after a couple hours (or less) regardless of which game you play

Funny enough that's the least known game in the franchise. I would like to play it though it's kinda rare/pricey.

I loved the original NES, but you don't waste time playing levels. You beat the hell out of your friends and see who can destroy the most helicopters.

I had borrowed the first 64 one (I believe ) from a cousin and enjoyed it a lot. Stumbled upon Through Time at blockbuster and rented it enough that my mom bought it for us. Loved that damn game, and it's always a shame that it doesn't get brought up much in Rampage discussions

I would have thought that Rampage Total Destruction was the least known game in the franchise. It released on Ps2 and GameCube after those systems were long dead (2006).

Even that one is known compared to Rampage Through Time, in fact I never see Rampage Through Time get brought up much at all!

I have played the NES and arcade ones. I like the NES one more simply because it has the map with the awesome music. Lizzie punching the map and part of the US turning black was so much fun.

I liked the N64 version, but I think that actually might have been the only version I ever tried to be honest.

I remember when NES Rampage came out thinking it was really expensive for a videogame. It was either $30 or $40, the first NES game I had noticed at that price point. (Probably 40?)
