Is there really nothing more to Smith other than
her being some common criminal who stole her sisters identity
to get to alpha Centauri?

She literally has no useful practical skills at all it seems lol.

So I poured my self a glass of Lagavulin while watching the show and I almost choked on a sip when I saw this.

That's a bottle of the exact same thing I am drinking.

Really like it so far. Everyone in the family is pretty capable and I don't feel like there's any dead weight.

I'm three episodes in and so far it's an interesting take. Really dislike the doctor Smith character though. They are trying way too hard with her.

though I did like the whole flare plot

Hahaha I'll take the comedy were they will give it.

Heh, I actually loved that part,
when they were training Dad for the flight.

I do have some negative feelings about the show, but I still feel like it's very much worth watching. There was a lot of it that I really loved a lot, it's just the melodramatic writing stuff I hated after too much of it.

The cliffhanger is kinda where the actual show starts
, so... I'll wait until that actually begins before judging it.

This is kind of how I felt too. After the final ep,
the show is finally set up to begin actually being more like the series Lost in Space was, exploring space and seeing new things, with all of the main cast members aboard the ship. Especially if that alien engine finally allows the J2 to fly further than low orbital escape. I couldn't understand how even with full fuel tanks they could not even get to another planet, let alone another system, but then the alien engine attached itself and answered that question for me, I think.

Enjoyed every moment of the first season from start to finish. Loved the family dynamic and characters and theme, the planetary setting, the alien robot, the Christmas star plot. I even like the new complicated Dr. Smith, not in the same mold or league as the version of Jonathan Harris, who played an endearing quasi-villain. Definitely looking forward to season 2.

I guess her purpose is to show how naive and gullible everyone is.

shes a believable villain, in that she doesn't actually have much intention of doing bad things to people, she just doesn't think of anything beyond her own well being or consider any repercussions of her actions beyond how they will immediately benefit her.
And believes that everybody is fundamentally the same as her.

Ummm hate to tell you this but it's not Earth. Like on other planets things behave differently and well it's just a made up sci-fi show. Don't take it so seriously.

Magic A is Magic A but when the very basics of how things behave are being played with it destroys any sense of grounding or realism. I don't expect them to go into super detail on how space travel works or anything needed for the show to exist but when it's water - I mean this is stuff we use every day that is not a rare element or anything, we are talking about us living on a planet that is mostly water with bodies that are mostly water - you don't then decide that you want water to behave in a different way for cheap melodrama.

Okay just finished the whole series. Overall I would not say I'm in love with it but I did enjoy it a lot and I will be excited for season 2. It was cool. Every one of the main characters feels like they have something to contribute which is great. The way they maneuvered the plot to get all the right players on the board by the end of the season, insteading of just cramming them all together right at the start, was satisfying. They built a lot of solid tension each episode and by the finale it feels like a hard fought journey on an alien world. Exactly what it should feel like. Dr. Smith is way more fucked up than I expected but that made her pretty interesting. However her plot thread got a little too slow at times like they didnt know what to do with her, not keeping pace with the rest of the writing around her.

I was excited to see the robot beginning to grow more of a personality in the second half but it was only a small taste so I'm not really satisfied with that. Disappointed at the unclaimed potential there. Until they get a dynamic going as satisfying as the original trinity of Will/Smith/Robot, it's never going to measure up. That's the key trifecta everybody is waiting for and it deflates my balloon to know that I gotta wait for season 2 to possibly see it. When teams make things under the assumption that they're getting a sequel, their attitude often ends up hurting their actual chances of getting one. In this case they're thinking, "No worries, we can get to that in season 2." And yet by neglecting it now, it actually lessens peoples enthusiasm for season 1. Chickens haven't hatched yet, dudes. An entire season without that means you fucked something up.

Soooo not without complaints but overall I had fun and waiting happily for season 2. Mina Sundwall is the highlight of the entire season.
Eagerly awaiting the moment when the robot shows up and announces himself to everyone as Golden Boy!

Will Robinson really is the worst.

My problem isn't that she isn't believable, it's that everyone is just entirely too gullible/dumb. It really gets ridiculous as the show progresses.

This is one of those shows that might build up to something good in the second season and have a third outstanding season now that they've laid the brick work for the show........BUT....they better make some changes as another season like the first will not nearly be enough to keep people watching.

I will keep watching, for a rainy day that was a very great ten hours of tv.

My problem is I want more like right now. I could binge watch the hell out that universe.

Did the old old show have the robot talk more than just "Danger Will Robinson"?

cause i'm hoping more conversational skills in next season.

I started it today and did not even know this show existed. I'm 2 episodes in and loving it.

And the robot is totally Geth.

I'm mixed on this one.

Robot is interesting, and I hope they actually explore the alien stuff.
The kids seemed very capable in the beginning, but that turned out wrong.

So is the 90's movie better than this?
I'd say they're about the same with the production values putting the show ahead of the movie. It looks really good for the most part.
I blinked. What was it?
Shes Maureen's daughter from a previous relationship.

While talking with Don about her dad he asks her if he's around at which point she tells him it's John. He gives her a look and she tells him she was born before he came into the picture.

I really liked this show. I was with my parents who started watching it because they had seen the tv series while I had no knowledge of it and it was a fun sci-fi family adventure. I thought the show got better as it went and you got a better understanding of the family dynamic. Also for being a more family oriented show I thought they did a really good job of not explaining every single mystery or unexplained thing.

Only negative was how much every episode had things that reminded me of Mass Effect. There was some shots and scenes that could have been in a Mass Effect game and looks the exact same.

The reviews have been absolutely terrible for this show.

Are they terrible or absolutely accurate? They almost unanimously say it's middling and that's exactly what it is.

The extremely high production values help it appear better than it is by quite a bit.

On the one hand I'm happy more high-budget sci-fi is being invested in. On the other, they can do better. TBH, The Expanse is much better than this show with a lower budget (although it's also pretty high, clearly). There's still no quality space adventure serial to replace the absolute avalanche of the 90s-early 2000s when you had the 4 Star Trek shows, Stargate, Farscape, Andromeda, etc.

It's boring. A lot of family drama that doesn't work, shaky acting from kids, no sense of adventure. They also could've find someone younger to play Don West, because dude looks like a pedophile when he flirts with Judy. On a positive side, visuals are good and Robot is the best character. If show will be renewed I hope they will add more interesting villain and give it a sense of adventure.

Entertaining that the entire first season essentially serves as a prequel to the premise of the original show. I enjoyed the first season overall, though at times it gets really inexcusably dumb and so far has over relied on C plots involving people getting trapped by nature that mostly act as filler. Also, they've already overused that person-looks-at-thing-we-can't-see-in-awe/terror cliffhanger. And they don't need it. The show does a fine job of keeping things going without the gimmick.

Also, I loved that face-melter move.

I've seen "no sense of adventure" a few times and I don't get what that means in the context of this show. They are literally exploring an alien planet. What would they have to do to give it a "sense of adventure"

I only saw the first episode but I see where that comment is coming from. In the first episode, there was no sense of awe or a real sense that they were humans who, for the first time ever, had come to an alien world. It was all shot and acted like this is old hat for them. Never seen the old show or movie, so I actually thought that this was just one of the many planets they had visited and the only difference with this one was that they had crashed it was only until later that I realized that this was the very first time they were visiting an alien world.

Watched the first episode with my GF last night and it was so many stupid little unnecessary stuff.

Ice don't behave like that! Ok let her get frozen under the ice. That can happen. But getting frozen from all around. Nope just looked stupid.
The rain at the same time as it is getting colder? The rain itself was stupid if it was supposed to get below 60 during the night. But at the same time saying temperature is dropping.
Did the boy really have a smaller helmet? Didn't look like it other when only he fit through the hatch.
The forest the boy landed in should have been somewhat visible at that size and smoke from the fire should have been seen. Why didn't he tell them he was coming when he was approaching.
I might give this another chance but doubt it. Not a good start.

A show featuring travel/exploration does not automatically equate to a sense of adventure, though. It all feels very bland and soulless. People want to feel enthusiasm for these people and their journey into the unknown. It's not that hard to understand.

Simply put, it felt very mundane almost as if someone decided to spend their time camping in a local forest. It doesn't help that the planet looks like your local forest (with the same trees too boot). The show also lacks tension and sense of danger despite how often characters say that they're, in fact, in danger.
