Sony is trying to find some kind of niche in a market where there is none.

Everyone else is just releasing the exact same phones as the rest. Currently, everyone is releasing 18:9 phones at 3x resolution with minimal bezels or alternatively no bezels and a notch, and a minimum of two cameras on the back for whatever (doesn't really matter, as long as there's two of them when you turn the phone around).

Just make one of those. People are going to take one look at the bezels, and immediately move on to the next phone in the display, nobody is going to care about 4K. (I mean, it barely makes sense for TV's sub-55" to have 4K, let alone a 5.8" mobile phone).

And here it is! HMD even bundled a clear TPU case with the phone and Amazon themselves added a screen protector on top so I'm covered (lmao) on that front

Ugh, and here I am potentially buying one towards the fall, or even settling for the Nokia 6.1 because my job has a way lower wage than I expected to have. Looks gorgeous though, have fun with your new buy.

Thanks! Now updating in the middle of the initial setup. It's 500+ MB so let's hope it's 8.1 and with April security patch

Edit: yep! 8.1 and April 1st patch.

Android One is such a good program, such a good thing that its being upheld. Next Gen Moto G family is also going to be part of it, and hopefully they do the same for the Z line. The faster android one is adopted, the less excuses oems have to not update their phones on a timely basis.

The March update was a bit late but I got the March and April update within about a week of each other. They've been pretty good at keeping the phones up-to-date so far.

did yours come with the pro camera software? They haven't pushed that to the 8 yet. I saw it was available as an APK from the Chinese version but most of it didn't work.

Yep, it came OOTB. The app even gives you a quick walkthrough on how to activate the Pro mode, reset settings to default and go back to Auto mode.

Whats a good alternative to the Nokia 7+? It was going to be my next phone but after it was made official all of the new Nokia's are incompatible with US LTE bands...I am forced to look elsewhere.

Moto G6 plus is recently conformed through Geekbench to have an SD 660 powering it. Basically the same phone as the Nokia 7+ at this point, right down to Android One.

So I'm still rocking my Moto X Pure and I don't want to upgrade but it just hit me how much I miss replaceable batteries. If not for the battery no longer holding a charge I would keep this phone easily for another year.

I think it actually uses the SD 630. The benchmarks put it in that range, and the apparently there was a bug in the benchmark software that showed the Moto X4 also used the SD 660 when it was known to use the SD 630.

Hopefully I'm wrong.

I would take much much better battery life over a 4k screen. So would most other normal people. Sony doesn't even explain why I would like a 4k on my screen. That's the most boring intro video for a flagship phone I've ever seen. I'll wait to see what the reviews say about the camera since I don't trust Sony on their mobile cameras. And what about pricing, is it going to again be wildly out of place with their market position? Are they going to have US retailers and support? Does their UI now look modern, are they offering meaningful features beyond stock?

Sony seems so lost. I think the market would benefit from a strong Sony as a competitor so I keep hoping that they can turn the corner and out together a true flagship, and hopefully this will be it.
How would any of us, if we made hardware, differentiate a phone if we had the ability to create one to sell? I think it would be tough, even if we had Samsung resources. Would what we make be a commercial success? Not sure. How exactly do you differentiate yourself in this market? Obviously you'd have to factor in pricing, specs, support. It's tough. Sony is lost.

You don't. It's an oversaturated market.

You'd ideally look at the tech space and see where the holes are. That's what Eve is doing by trying to be the OnePlus of surface like devices. Most of this markets are full though.

Admittedly it did score a little low, but Geekbench specifically lists SD660 specs. Hopefully its not a glitch like you say, the more wide spread the SD660 gets, the cheaper the phones that uses it get. We really need a 650 successir in the 200-300 price range.
Nubia Z18 Mini is also worth keeping an eye on. Should also be an Android One device once it gets released outside of China.
Oh yeah, forgot about that as well. Still don't trust ZTE though.

Updating the Scirocco!
The edged screen is something I need to get used to I guess. I also got the free transparent cover, but I orered a black silicone one as well which fits nicer and more seamless.

Hey anyone who might be able to help. I recently updated my OG Pixel to Android 8.0 after holding off for a long time because I had heard a lot of complaints about battery life dropping off when the update first was pushed out. I was having some apps like Instagram give me a lot of crashing problems and figured it was because of my out of date OS, so I finally updated to 8.0 and it's been fine for a few weeks or so, but in the last few days it's been randomly rebooting and giving me all sorts of problems.

Apps will stop taking inputs when I touch the screen, but OS buttons will still function, and then a few seconds later it usually reboots. Usually after it reboots, something else isn't working (the most recent time Chrome wouldn't play video and this morning it wouldn't play music through the headphone jack.

What's the deal? Has anyone else had this issue? I don't know how to do this, but should I roll back to pre-8.0?

Really frustrated because I dumped a Nexus 6P with a battery that wouldn't last more than 2 hours for this thing, and it's been absolutely perfect up until now. I only got it in October.

So this is a fucking bummer. Did a factory reset, and it's worse than ever. I'm so fucking done with Google's phones. Between the Nexus 6P and this Pixel I've spent like a grand in last 2 years on stuff that just dies. Apropos of nothing.

Nexus 6P died from a ubiquitous battery failure that Google wouldn't cover because I was outside of the warranty, and now this issue with the Pixel, which according to a bunch of other people who have the same problem have been told by Google is a RAM failure. I bought this Pixel used to replace my Nexus 6P on short notice and I guess that means I'm SOL on any chance at getting it replace/serviced. So disappointed.

Maybe I'll bang on the door again about my paperweight 6P and see if they can do anything.

You know why so many people liked Wii Tennis?

It made sense. Ball comes at you and you swing. Boom you make contact along with the audio cue from the wiimote.

So you had people of all ages playing tennis or bowling.

I've yet to see that level of oh shit it just makes sense with phone gestures.

Completely agree with you.

A fool proof test on intuition would be to give someone, who has never seen an iPhone X before(like elderly parents or grandparents), with an app open and see how long it takes for them to get back to the home screen. If it's not immediately apparent how they would do that, it's not intuitive.

I got a March security patch on my Moto G5S+ that seems to randomly just torpedo my Internet connection (it'll show my WiFi as not connected, and then show data as not connected when I turn off WiFi). Only other thing I can find on the problem is this. Only solution seems to be restarting the phone.

Anyone know if there's anything I can do? I'm not really in the mood to root it in order to roll back the update (really, you'd think the phone would save the image for the previous version after updating), and I definitely don't want to buy a new phone.

That Samsung design will have WAY less bezel than the X. Truly bezel-less. If there was any doubt about who the true design leader in the tech world was, however, all bow down to Apple. The notch is king until Apple says its not. Not surprising, but disappointing.

I think the background and maybe button is transparent and the pill button is smaller in footprint and overlayed onto what's on screen. So you can use that extra area for screen stuff, immersive mode without the bottom bar being black.

lol, it's hilarious how as SOON as the XZ2 Premium gets announced, so-called insiders come out of the woodworks to say there will be an even higher end phone from Sony later in the year. They claim it might not use the Premium branding, so possibly the Pro branding we've been hearing about for a while? Supposedly that's the phone that has a 4K OLED and an even more improved camera setup.

Dunno what to say about that... at least the 4K OLED rumor has some credibility due to this info provided by Sony Mobile's head of UX planning in Europe, Hitoshi Osawa back in January:
Sony Mobile's head of UX planning in Europe, Hitoshi Osawa, recently told Russian website ferra.ru that 4K OLED panels will appear in phones "very soon" and that Sony is investing in the technology: "All I can say is that we are investing money in OLED displays. And very soon you will see 4K OLED-matrices in mobile devices, which until now did not exist. The next step is 4K OLED, and you will not be disappointed," he revealed.

Well... wait and see I suppose.

Even less bezels is cool (I like having as small of a phone as possible that still has a big screen) but the notch is disappointing. If the screen is going to have an asymmetric design, I'd rather they just kept a small bottom bezel and put the camera down there (but I know that doesn't solve where the top speaker grill would go...).
I just switched to the list view in the multitasking screen (and like it a lot better), so I hope they don't force me to switch back to cards with this.

Wonder if it's because JOLED couldn't be ready in time, and Sony wanted to release the XZ2 premium, so they stuck with 4k lcd 16:9 display for this premium. Then release the pro at the end of the year.

All this is from what I've read elsewhere, but from what I understand JOLED won't be ready until 2019. The rumor before this launch was that Sony was going to us LG P-OLED.

As for why it's 16:9, from what I understand the Snapdragon 845 can't handle a 18:9 display at 4K resolutions. So IF there is to be a new 4K OLED out at IFA, either they'll have to be using an updated S845 that can support the display, or it'll also be 16:9

LG must be close to the end now when all they are doing is rebranding last year's phones and selling them again. Well LG finally quit mobile in 2019? The death watch begins now!
