That first Ghost album and how enigmatic it all was, that was like the best metal performance art I've seen in a long time.

It's a great example of how sometimes really good and interesting art just doesn't work as an extended thing.

Seeing as how they've seemingly become more popular and sold more records with every release, I fail to see how Ghost "doesn't work as an extended thing". Quite the contrary, I would say.

Saw Bell Witch on their EU tour with Aerial Ruin, Ypres and Pressor a few days ago. Great show, all of those acts are quite different from each other but everything worked great together. Dark folk by Aerial Ruin (one dude who loops his acoustic guitar and vocals), powerful Isis-like post metal by Ypres (from Russia) and hardcorey stoner/sludge by Pressor (also from Russia). Bell Witch played the first part of Mirror Reaper and that was one of the more powerful funeral doom experiences I've had live. The sound was so good, it was almost like a sunn o))) show with slo mo drums and moanful growling and fucking LOUD. Show of the year so far.

Artistically speaking. A lot of the appeal was their mysteriousness. Now that we know who it is and the frequent changing of the 'Papa' character alongside Metal Injection and Blabbermouth headlines, it lost it's enigmatic appeal. Now it's just a theatrical metal band- 'ok, who is papa emiritus this time, oh a new mask and a new look for the ghouls, cool'. They sacrificed the performance art aspect of the band in order to be a professional working band. The latest cardinal thing is better than the derpy second iteration of papa, but compare that against the first version and those early live shows.

Can't wait to see them live. It will be a totally different experience.

And they will cover 'It is a sin'? Bring it on :D

Plus looks like one of the Ghouls is a female, according to this image
Seeing ghost on may 11. Too bad it seems the album won't be out before then.
They will probably play Rats and probably a one or two new songs though ;)

NORDFRIESLAND, DEUTSCHLAND
There's also a parody/comedy band called Crusty Old Toad, although much less known than Slugdge is now and Nekrogoblikon.

Also on a somewhat similar note don't forget the guy that was trolling people with his debut album and its art a few months ago, lol. One-man black metal band called Sacred Son. Background is his vacation in Cape Town, kvlt as fuck.

Song of the Day:

Continuing in the same vain as the Ghost mentions in the thread, Purson is rocking that same proto-metalsound. I once heard them described as what a female-fronted Black Sabbath would sound like if they didn't evolve into playing metal.
Have a great weekend everyone.

whenever I see the name nekrogoblikon it reminds me of the goblin cock album necronomidonkeykongimicon

Damn, those melodies towards the end!

Here's an extra for you guys.

I love everything about this. I highly recommend checking the whole performance, it's available on youtube and shared by the group.

Purson are great, I saw them open for Ghost once. Sadly, they broke up a while ago.

Just wanted to report in and say that the upcoming Totalselfhatred album is very good. Suicidal Agalloch. Check it out when it releases.

Power Trip is wonderful live but I just do not dig their albums as a complete package, really great band but at the same time only in bits and pieces, they are hit or miss for me

What are peoples thoughts on Alterbeast and Arkaik? They just announced a show in my town and from the little I've heard it sounds good. Thinking of checking them out.

guess it's part of a Unique Leader tour? Honestly I haven't really followed technical death metal too closely this past decade, but I would probably go to that show. There's this event upcoming called the Bay Area Death Fest which includes a couple Unique Leader bands. Mainly interested in seeing Disentomb (!!!) and Internal Bleeding but also Decrepit Birth and Psycroptic among others.

Song of the Day

Ran across this youtuber that got a hold of the original And Justice tracks and remixed some or all apparently. The vocals have a bit much reverb I think, but hearing the bass guitar without that wonkiness that the album has is pretty cool. I'm a bit torn on this though. I do like the original mix because its so ingrained in my brain at this point that I expect to hear that wub noise, but at the same time, this does sound really good with a proper clarity. The original mix doesn't take away from how good the album is, but it's definitely been a point of contention. So today were getting Blackened!

Dark Angel (CA) - Darkness Descends

going with a desert island staple. There's so much about this album that elevates it to a level above countless others in its realm. Gene Hoglan established himself as one of the greatest drummers and lyricists ever by this point. The atmosphere is unparalleled. Evil riffs and maniacal solos dominate. Don Doty's vocals are completely possessed. This is perfect thrash metal.

Worth mentioning this was another heavyweight released in 1986. The most headbangable fistbanging release that year. Much prefer Don Doty over Ron Rinehart's vocals.

One of those moments where you really like something created by someone youre, to say the least not a fan of. I watched a couple of his youtube videos the other day, which weren't as bad as I was expecting from what I've heard, but pretty nonsense nontheless. I like his music but I feel conflicted in financially supporting him so he can continue to spread an agenda I disagree with.

The new Oak Pantheon is very good, but different from their previous stuff. Acoustic Agalloch dark folkish. No black metal. No shrieking.

Ok...Lost in Vegas guys did a Gwar tune which I've kind of avoided over the years. Guess I figured they were more of a joke and didn't bother giving them a chance. Turns out, they seem really damn good. So if I were looking to pick up two or three of their best cd's, which am I looking at getting?

Scumdogs of the Universe has always been my favorite. America Must Be Destroyed and Ragnarok also have quite a few good songs on them. I don't know much about their discography past 2000 or so.

I've been fascinated with how long Lemmy lived by consuming a fuck ton of whiskey, speed, and slaths of meat and cheese. Maybe his hard working lifestyle meant all of his fuel was in perfect balance.

Drudkh - Eternal Sun

Let's get some Drudkh going in here. I really love this band and I'd credit them as one of the bands that originally got me into black metal. I feel like The Swan Road is a pretty underrated release from them. It's definitely one of their "faster" albums. It took me some time to really appreciate it but I loved it once I dug into it. I pretty much like all their albums to some extent, even Songs of Grief and Solitude, their acoustic album. Their new album is quite awesome too.

New Deafheaven track, "Honeycomb"

I really like it, but then I've liked pretty much everything they've done so YMMV

Wow, 2:33 for a skit that ran out of gas after a minute? Hope it is it's own track so it can be easily skipped.
