Finally got to Amygdala in the Defiled Chalice, and she certainly isn't easy! Anyone know of a good strategy? I just want the Platinum now, so summoning people doesn't bother me one bit.

It's the same boss, so any strategies that work for the regular version will work too.

(Ch)easy mode is to stick on her tail which forces her to do a lot of jumps - when she jumps, stand still charging an R2 and hit the head as she lands - a few of those will stagger her for a visceral, rinse and repeat.

Wow! Looks like I'm at an impasse, I've not seen anything like it in a souls game, a one hit kill boss. I have 31 vitality and it does one spin attack which is really difficult to avoid and its full health to nothing, I died. Its an Undead Giant in a chalice I guess these chalice dungeons are shit, like wtf, do they not play test this, is there not some trick to it.
The spin attack does hit hard but not sure I've ever been OHK by it from full HP. You can learn to dodge through it, or just look out for its visual tells and dodge back out then in again.

I fought him with much lower Vitality and I'm pretty sure he didn't one shot me with it, or else I didn't get hit by it.

Defiled Amygdala is hands down the worst and hardest boss in the game imo.

Why do I want to replay this game after already Platinuming it? I really want a 2nd game... but I'll take whatever From is cooking.

Figuring out the exact frames and points to dodge those chains is extremely difficult.

So I finished this a few hours ago.

This is now one of my favourite games of all time, easily. Can't believe it. I mean, I wasn't even sure if I liked it for ten hours or so, then as Gascoigne beat my ass I realised I was loving it for some reason. Now I've unlocked all the endings, got almost every important item, I'm fairly close to Platinuming it - which I never even do anymore - and now I'm reading up on the damn lore and plan to do NG+ later on. This just does not happen to me anymore. I have so many games on Steam that've failed to hold my attention for longer than 20 hours, yet here I am trying 20+ times to beat freaking Orphan of Kos on my own, as someone who's never particularly enjoyed high levels of difficulty. Almost nothing else has grabbed me like this in years, and I've kept away from most RPGs all my life. Never even showed the slightest bit of interest in the Souls games, and never in a million years would I have thought I'd be into this. I'm totally shocked. What weirds me out even more is as far as I know, my story isn't even unique.

Game is outstanding in basically every area. Best atmosphere I've seen in any game. The combat's fantastic and I want it in practically everything. The soundtrack is so up my alley it's ridiculous (Ludwig's theme was basically what made me buy the game in the end). The doll is one of my favourite NPCs ever, surprisingly. Ludwig and Maria are some of the best bosses in any game as far as I'm concerned. Sound design is amazing. Level design is some of the best I've ever seen. And it's got plenty of replay value to boot? Jesus Christ, man. Game is legitimately the most inspiring thing I've played in a long time.

tl;dr Bloodborne good.

What I learned about Forbidden Woods was finding the shortcuts makes it a lot more bearable before you beat the boss of the area. Now that I've discovered most of the shortcuts and beat the boss, I feel good about going back there to farm echoes, vials, and bullets.

Quick question. So right now, as far as I know, after beating Rom I have the option of doing the Nightmare Frontier area or Yahar'gul. Any recommendations on which one I should tackle or doesn't even matter? My hunter is currently at lvl 75 I think with 30 Vit, 23 End, 18 Str, 30 Skl, 12 BT, and 12 Arc.
I'd recommend doing the nightmare frontier. I bet you're a bit over leveled for that area already. And yeah I love the forbidden woods, it's my favorite area. So many little nooks and crannys.
So I finished this a few hours ago.

I like helping people with him, hehehe. The only truly one-shot move he has is his jumping attack, and if you know the pattern (count one, two as soon as jump, and as soon as you finishes with two, simply roll) of his jumps they can be avoided 100% of the time. It's such a blood pumping adrenaline rush every time he does so though, since you know if you mess up even if it's just a bit you're pretty much dead.

The best way to deal with him for me is just to stick near his legs under him and attack them, don't chase after his hands, just keep focusing on the legs. You can cause great damage to them (with hugely satisfying blood splatter effect too!) if you attack them continuously.

I've been camping outside Laurence with my Small Bell and been getting decent action in being summoned, but Chriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiist I haven't been part of a victorious attempt yet out of what's gotta be dozens. Only got his legs off once!

Grrrrrrrrrrrr... I'm tempted to just say fuck it and finish up the DLC. I'm at the end of the main game, so this is all that's left. Well, I'm short a few Chalice Dungeons, but I hate those, sooooooo...

We'll done Spinky !

This is why Souls games don't need difficulty levels, as you naturally get better at them, and the deaths are all part of your development and experience.

As for Defiled Amygdala, I'm going to try and cheese her with the visceral attack after she's jumped, just need to wait until after I finish work first.

Just got through Yahargul. Man those bell maidens are a pain. Final boss was nothing to write home about either, just kinda blah. Not my favorite area all things considered.

Anyway, God of War is coming out on Friday so I probably won't get back to Bloodborne for a few weeks/months. I'll see if it still holds my interest then. :)

If this is anyone's first Souls game, try the others as well. Bloodborne teaches you the correct way to play Souls so now you're set for the other games. Dump the shields, get light armor, AND ROLL.

I tried going back to DS3 and couldn't enjoy it because of the lack of regain. Getting hit in BB typically isn't that bad, but in DS3 due to the lack of healing options, getting hit = have to heal. I didn't really enjoy that. BB does a good job of allowing you a margin of error while you play.

I'll probably try DS Remastered, assuming it doesn't turn out to be a botch job. Still pretty wary of Dark Souls though, honestly. I wouldn't think I'd like it, but I thought the same about Bloodborne too, so who knows. I know plenty of people got into DS after BB.

I'd recommend doing the nightmare frontier.

Started the Nightmare Frontier. Most of the enemies were no problem just annoying. HOWEVER, WTF at the Winter Lanterns?? Those things are nightmare fuel in looks and action. Got grabbed and killed like 3 times in a row by one. Then I thought about my encounters with them realized that I didn't even try to shoot and staggered it for a visceral. SMDH. It's on tonight!

Yeah... those dudes are one of the most difficult enemies in the game. The singing they do...

I never had problems with the winter lanters, I mean, yeah, I had problems with them being annoying, but they weren't that scary (maybe cause I just kept running away from them), and I sort of liked their singing. The hairbloodspidercrawl-fuckingthings outside Cainhurst though... Like, if there ever was a time when the devs should've gone "you know what, I think we've gone too far now, lets dial it back a bit" it'd be for those fuckers... I mean... god damn...

Winter Lanterns were almost never a threat to me. You only ever have to face one at a time, and they stagger super easy so you can basically stunlock them to death. Just be sure you're wearing your best Frenzy resist gear/runes, and sit tight until your Frenzy meter goes back down or pop a Sedative before going after the next.

The start of Castle Cainhurst was such a pain. Just too damned many of those murder spiders that hit way too hard and had way too much HP. Running past them was easy enough, but god help you if you wanted the loot in the area...

Rest of the level after that was cake.

The spiders in Cainhurst gave me so much trouble, and their loot wasn't even worth it. It was easier for me to take out the ones in the DLC one by one, even at that low level (think I was about 72 at the time).

Fuck the Winter Lanterns. They just freak me out.

Fun fact, they wear the same clothes as the doll and their heads are a bunch of messengers mushed together. Don't think any of that has any real significance, though.

Now that I think back on it, the Winter Lanterns shouldn't be that hard. I think after coming off being annoyed by those big troll like enemies constantly throwing boulders at me and making quick work of them with the Holy Blade, I just rushed at the Lanterns thinking I would hack them up real quick. It also didn't help that I saw my Frenzy meter climbing which also caused me to panic.

That's one things I love about this game is how a lot of the enemies force you to think about how you gonna attack them. You go in half-cocked against some of them and you pay for it.

Yeah I guess on paper the winter lanterns aren't hard enemies. But they do have a bit of that physiological warfare. First the singing, which is unsettling, especially with headphones on. But then of course is the frenzy meter, which puts you on edge. And god forbid you're wearing armor with low frenzy res or have a build that way. And while you don't ever fight two at a time, there are multiple areas where you fight one right after the other, so yeah it can get tense. But I still stand by that they are one of the more difficult enemies in the game. Of course no where near the shark people or the ugly spider fucks in cainhurst.

In my playthrough I decided to see how much Insight I could stack (mostly to buy a Blood Rock).

The last area was NOT fun with 60 Insight...

I finished off Mergo's Wet Nurse / Nightmare of Mensis today and boy that was a lot of fun. With that done, I've got the base game content done except for some chalice dungeons. I've started up the DLC and just fought Ludwig.

This game is pretty incredible. I'll make some more progress tomorrow.

I'm definitely going for the platinum.

Bloodborne teaches you the correct way to play Souls so now you're set for the other games. Dump the shields, get light armor, AND ROLL.

I hope you're not being serious about this because we honestly shouldn't be fostering this mindset that's already too prevalent in the Soulsborne community and feeds into the awful reputation. It also does the original Dark Souls a disservice to say that light armor and rolling is the only way to go! A great thing about the Souls trilogy is the variety of builds available. I find it just as fun to play through the three games as immovable, unstoppable tanks and glass cannon spellcasters as it is to forego shields, two-hand a weapon, and dodge roll through everything.

So yeah, to anyone who will be playing Dark Souls for the first time or coming back to it after trying it and not getting hooked, don't force yourself to play it just like Bloodborne. It's slow in comparison, and you'll quickly find it frustrating that you can't dash forward diagonally to avoid attacks! Try sword-and-board or sorcery. Mix things up. Or stick with a shieldless, fast attacking build. Play however you think feels good.

Mostly being facetious. I just found that if it makes it easier as an entry point into Dark Souls coming from Bloodborne because I enjoyed the playstyle of Bloodborne and was able to successfully replicate that playing through Dark Souls 1. The variety of Dark Souls is nice but sometimes overwhelming but I like the ability to try out builds without figuring out gem farming and weapon imprints.

Beat Ludwig, Laurence, Living Failures. Stuck on Maria. I really dislike the weapon upgrade system in this game as it feels useless to use anything but my Kirkhammer +10 since I can't level another weapon past +8 at the moment. I have like 120 insight in my inventory for Blood rocks, but I don't have enough Chunks to get there.

Edit: I have never been so on fucking tilt with a boss before. One run I can parry her repeatedly and then the next I die instantly. I feel like I lost every bit of skill I had since the last time I played.

Starting to think I will be officially stopped by Lady Maria. I've tried every trick in the book and died more to her than any other boss. Normal strats, parrying, stunlocking, nothing works for me. Miserable.

I beat Matyr Logarious today. What an exhilarating fight. I much prefer bosses that can be parried and then viceraled. I have the rune that increases visceral damage so I was hitting him for about 1200 a pop. Overall I really liked Castle Cainhurst. It was fun to explore and I really like it when areas loop around themselves so you can open shortcuts as you advance through the area. It creates a genuine sense of place and physical space. At first I was scared of going in because of the spider creatures that roam the outside of the castle but other than that it was very manageable at level 50. I love parrying so fighting the ghosts was tons of fun, even though the wailing and the jump scares had me on my toes. I'm guessing the Vilebloods are sort of like the PvP covenant? And the confederates are the Jolly Cooperation faction?

I'm doing the Unseen Village now I guess. I've replaced the Hunter's Axe for LHB+7 since it just has such great scaling. But I prefer the axe's moveset and range. I guess I'm a bit bummed out that I haven't found anything better than LHB. Am I missing something? Should I be looking in the chalice dungeons? I like helping people with bosses that I've already killed and some players have some really cool looking weapons I didn't even know existed.

I'm going mostly blind but if someone has some (mostly) spoiler free tips on where I could find some fun weapons to use instead of the LHB I'd really appreciate it.

I'm mostly doing SRT / SKL. That's why the LHB is so good since it scales at B for both. The Kirkhammer scales at B for strength but I don't really like its moveset either hah. I don't like Ultragreatswords or Greathammers in Souls games so I guess that's why.

I guess I'd like something like the Hunter Axe but with better scaling. Does that even exist?

I like helping people with him, hehehe.

I wish to never fight him ever again. You are certainly more brave than I haha, it took me hours to beat him, I remember wasting a whole day trying to beat him. :(
I always tried to sit around his legs and try not to die from his jump and everytime I almost killed him he somehow ended up landing on me. :(

There's the whirlygig saw in the DLC too, which is fun and has a similar one handed/two handed transform.

Once I got the Whirligig, I never looked back. Best weapon.

This game has been so good up until the halfway mark, but the last 4 areas I've gone through have been disappointing
(Byrgenwerth, Yahar'gul, Upper Cathedral Ward, Orphanage)
. I think I'm mostly disappointed that the bosses in these zones were crap, but I'm also disappointed that I haven't really gotten too much lore, and it feels like I'm nearing the end of the game. The areas also weren't all that fun to fight through, either. Making a beeline for bell maidens in YG every time you die, having to fight multiple blue eyed werewolves simultaneously in UCW, it just wasn't fun. For the latter I ended up cheesing them through one of the doors that they can't get through.

I also can't emphasize how blah the bosses in those areas were. You just kinda... run up to them and mash R1. There's very little back and forth dueling like there was with Logarius or Gascoigne or the Shades.

I'm getting God of War tomorrow so I probably won't get back to BB for a while, but it sucks that I'm going to leave it on such a sour note.
