I thought this deserved its own thread.

So Sonic Mania Plus isn't out yet, but a patch just hit on PS4 UK (and probably going to hit soon on other platforms and territories, the patch hit less than an hour ago) which has fixed and changed some long standing issues with the game. There's cutscene skipping now as a general update, and some slight changes to previous level design and areas, but there's three major things with this update I think most will gravitate towards:

01.) All the levels have cutscene transitions now to each other. Someone's been streaming the PS4 patch so here's some videos of the transitions if curious:

02.) They actually took out and revamped one of the boss fights in the game and replaced it with a new take on the boss that's much more interesting. The rest of this boss is the same, they only changed the final phase of the fight. Spoilers, but here: https://clips.twitch.tv/PeacefulGrotesqueDadPMSTwin *SPOILERS*

03.) You can now use unlockable abilities like the Insta-Shield, Peel-Out, etc., on Save Game files and NOT just No Save Files now.

---

UPDATE: 04.) Someone shared you can disable the time limit for stages from the options menu in this update as well.

---

There might be other changes, but the first one especially has been a long critique of the game for many fans, so it's nice to see they put it in ahead of Mania Plus' release. Also apparently Mania Plus is done with production, some staff apparently finished up all of their work yesterday and seems it's done, just to see when it's released now.

Cool, wasn't expecting much more than what was mentioned in the press release for the Plus version.
The fight in question was pretty bugged so a change is neat.
They should probably leave an option to play it somehow as well, tho.

Hope they fixed the save system and the hit box for getting crushed too

I'm hearing that unlockables like the insta-shield & super peel-out also work on saved games now, where as you could only use them on a no-save run.

I haven't had the patch hit yet for me on PS4, but cannot wait to try this stuff out.

Stage transitions are an unexpected but very welcome addition.

I thought it was a shame that all stages weren't treated the same. Glad to see that they're polishing everything up for Mania Plus!

Someone else had mentioned that to me, so added. Would be the third big thing, can use unlocked abilities on Save Files rather than just No Save runs with this patch too.

Does anyone know if they added back the Dunkey "hyeh" easter egg in Hydrocity Zone? Some update removed it from the game.

EDIT: Easter egg in question:

EDIT 2: Just tested it out in the switch version, though I don't think that was updated. It works, and investigation into the YouTube comments seems to point out that it was never removed from the switch version. Idk, the removal could have been a hoax, all that matters is that it is in the game (at least for the switch).

So this is not leaked Plus stuff, just an update?

I need it now if so!

It's an unintentionally released and retracted update that... we don't actually know what it really is supposed to be. The time window for that is pretty much over, unless you plan on stealing someone's PS4 (or you have one and got the thing loaded).

It doesn't include the Sonic Mania Plus new content (not to mention Plus content is DLC for previous owners, so there's that), so I think it is planned to just be an update, but might've released it a bit early unintentionally in one territory. They maybe were planning to release it alongside Mania Plus releasing or something, but it's a nice update all around.

Good, that boss fight was garbage. Made me drop the game for months, although I went back a couple weeks ago and used a guide to get past it. First time I've ever had to look up how to play a Sonic game.

I might just start over from the beginning now that they've put out such a substantial patch.

So far none of these changes have been for the worse. That boss fight was just bad.
no, i actually liked that bossfight.
the pressure from the spikes and the metal sonic and the racing, it felt difficult and challenging.

what we are noticing is subjective perceptions. it would be nice to have the option to do the original fight

man, really hating the fact digital games can change stuff like this making it impossible for new players to jump in and try the previous versions
Yeah, as much as that new boss looks much better than what it was initially (in my opinion), I'd much rather have the option to play the original level and the remixed level just for completeness sake. The team that made Mania are top guys though, so I'd expect they'll put an option in to at least fight the original boss from a sub menu or something.

No fucking way. They brought back
Metal Sonic Kai from Chaotix?

I don't see what's supposed to be weird about this. Sega isn't particularly shameful about references to this whole thing by themselves - at least when compared to other things - I don't see why fans would.

I can see your point. What used to have happened was arguably worse though, with region-specific revisions and such. And the game's on PC, so as long as someone breaks that Denuvo...

I mean, this is the most obvious scenario, but it's not exactly confirmed. This may be Mania's equivalent of Sonic 3C protos or whatever that thing should be called.

Didn't hate that part of the fight, but it was definitely lacking compared to the other forms. The new one looks like a trade up.

Geez, mods, I can see why you're transplanting those posts, but that's a terrible title.

I recommend "Sonic Mania update leaked on some PS4s".

You shouldn't be fighting regular Metal Sonic. He's made for racing. And if you are going to have a direct fight with Metal you don't do a phase right beforehand that's basically the same except you couldn't touch him. Why can you hit him now but not then? The spike wall looked horrible and should have at minimum been Eggman chasing with his laser. The fight was also too easy/simple and felt tacked on and underwhelming compared to phase 2.

Not gonna miss the Metal Sonic last part previous version one fucking bit. That was shit gameplay for the sake of nostalgia only.

Wow these are GREAT changes overall, especially changing what was I think the worst boss fight in that game by far. Awesome job and an easy $10 upgrade to one of my favorite games of 2017 and the best Sonic ever.

That boss fight was legitimately terrible. Even after beating it, I still don't know exactly wtf I was "supposed" to do.

Has anyone with the patch checked if Super Sonic has proper sprites for zone-specific obstacles? One of the tiny things that annoyed me about the game, but since they addressed other issues it possible they fixed this too.

I already knew Plus was going to warrant at least another playthrough, but this all sounds/looks great!
