Damn that lychee smoothie looks good. I could go for one right about now.

Tinder's pretty bad for a nerdy asian dude, just the demographics I guess. That's probably why the asian specific dating sites exist.

are they worth shit?

the only ones i've seen is the big banner ads which buy here that are like NOT YOUR TYPICAL DATING SITE which in all honesty doesn't inspire confidence.

could smash an avo smoothie right about now tbh

I went to Chinese school for like a year when I was in elementary school, but I ended up studying French more seriously because that's what like 75% of my extended family speaks (well, Creole French).

I can't even speak French now. My sister's a lot better with French since my mom basically spoke French to her for her first 4 years.

Maaaaan I wish I knew Mandarain or Cantonese or even Hakka. Maybe even just knowing how to read characters, that would let me play some Chinese-localized games that never made it to the west

My mom kept chastising me for not speaking Mandarin, but all she ever did to teach me anything was yell at me to take a shower and turn off the TV in Chinese. I took two years of it to fulfill my college language requirement but it didn't stick well and I couldn't get the pronunciations quite right. I wish I knew it better.

My favorite joke when native speakers tell me that my Mandarin isn't too bad is, "well yea, I've gotten really good at telling my mom I don't want to do grad school in Mandarin"

The hubby was cracking up over all of Tzi Ma's lines in The Resident last night. Guess that's what happens when you get a Chinese-American actor and assume they can speak Mandarin.

And then you have Arrow, where the characters were all, "He spoke perfect Chinese," while I needed subtitles to understand what the hell he was trying to say.

ME TOO! Like... all of that.

Plus, my parents speak Taiwan accented Mandarin and my college professors were from mainland. So, it was kinda different.

I have trouble talking to my mom sometimes because her English is meh and my Chinese is meh. :(

i've started studying hangul for fun (just to be able to pronounce it) and between that and my fairly decent japanese studies my chinese is sitting here being like 'come on dude just fuckin' you could probably get pretty alright if you tried hard enough'

Right now I'm like fuck youuuu, chinese, I'm learning hangul pronounciation!

But I'll probably not learn any actual korean right now lol. I just wanna learn the alphabet.

Meanwhile, I switched from a Japanese company to an American one with a partner studio in China. No need to learn Japanese now!

Yeah! I'm also pretty sure my mom used to mix in the language her parents spoke, because later some things I learned didn't quite add up. Or, it was a mainland vs. Taiwan issue.

Don't even get me started on the Japanese in that show.

For weeks my partner and I were shouting MI-RA-KU-RU in public like a bunch of idiots.

I went grocery shopping and I was walking up to the strawberries when a white lady there asked me if I was there to talk to my mom (some other random lady also at the strawberries).

Bitch what.

Question to my American Asians:

How much racism do you encounter as an Asian living on America on a daily basis? Not much? Alot?

Also is your friend circle mostly Asian (like me here in Aus) or do you branch out alot?

Almost none. It's mostly just systemic stuff that's subtle and doesn't really play into daily life.

I do find that a lot of my friends are Asian, but I think it's because I grew up in an enclave.

All the goddamn time. A lot of it is little things and sometimes its getting nudged by an old white lady in a shopping cart while I'm holding one of my kids or the one time my white coworker assumed I was Korean(I'm Chinese), which is even more odd because we work in HR. Then comes being treated worse by people in general.

I have all Asian friends because I grew up in an enclave and have no problem keeping it that way. If I did branch out, it would be with other PoC because they feel me on the racism stuff.

I grew up in a relatively small but diverse city, so I was lucky to have friends from different backgrounds.

Now that I think back to it, they were all women for some reason o_o?

I've noticed some subtle..... Ignorance from time to time when I'm going out for drinks with my family and friends. On a daily basis, none.

My circle of friends is indeed just more Hmong people. I do remember how I had more non-White friends when I was still in school though. School was my only way of interacting with other non-White people but now that I'm not in school anymore (7-8 years now since college), my circle is just my family and their friends who happen to be Hmong.

Rarely anything blatant. I'm half white though, so I can probably pass most of the time unless someone is really looking. Occasionally stuff that makes me wonder.

My friend circle is majority Asian but that's mostly because I grew up in Hawaii, which is the most Asian state in the country. It's pretty diverse given that, though.

So Manchester has legit Korean food. It's called... Annyeong.

Currently, the place is damn empty since it's new and the portion sizes are stupid large.

Next time I fly to NorCal I'll get my butt over to LA and see if you got good Korean food in the US.

Damn, now I want Korean BBQ so bad. I miss SoCal food.

Fly to the UK I'll treat you. As well as the best Thai food in the West.

Anyone here with Chinese heritage know about this thing? This girl was telling me about how there was this expression about a boyfriend or girlfriend giving their partner "green hair" -- something to do with cheating.

She sais it's why people don't dye their hair completely green but I think she made it up.

AYCE Korean BBQ isn't very popular in NorCal. There are a few places but they do tend to get crowded by long wait times because there are so few places.

Instead we have a ton of AYCE hot pot places.

Daily, it's usually not too bad. Overall? Enough to be sick of a lot of shit. It definitely worse when I was younger. Was bullied growing up with kids pulling their eyes back and doing that ching-chong crap and throwing stereotypes at me. People used to often assume I couldn't understand English because I was quiet and wouldn't respond to aggressive people. I've argued with friends and coworkers angrily over Chinese restaurants stealing dogs and cats jokes. Once, in elementary school, this girl asked me if I bothered to put toilet paper on the seat, and before I could even tell her "yeah, my mom is an obsessive germaphobe and puts down 10 layers," she says "Probably not. My mom says Chinese people are dirty." (For reference I'm half white/half Taiwanese.) The area I live in now is much more diverse and has a big Korean population, so day-to-day I don't really get any shit anymore. Now and then some asshole will still fetishize me but generally people seem to have toned down a lot of the face-to-face bullshit, fortunately.

My friend circle is a lot of different types of people.

Have any other Filipinos here done 23andme?

I'm curious how they count Spanish ancestry. My paternal grandmother was supposed to be Spanish, but the test is saying I'm a solid 49.8 Southeast Asian. There's no way any of that came from my mother though lol.

23andme wasn't very useful to me. No Carribean data, 46% unknown if you change the confidence level...

(re)Confirmed I'm half white af though and I got G6PDD so that's a thing.

Tempted to send a kit to my Mum because East Asian (what should be Chinese) barely showed up at all, just 1%.

Good thing is that you can download the data and upload it to other websites like MyHeritage.

So, I'm watching Forged in Fire: Knife or Death, which is pretty sweet, but the very first competitor of the series? A white guy with a katana. He was wearing a Iaido gi, too.

Green hair?

I've always heard it as "she gave him a green hat" as being a euphemism for she's cheating on him.

I have no idea how your friend is able to link that to people not dying their hair completely green though
