A few weeks back I suggested Danny Ric to Mercedes. Now I've changed my mind.

Mercedes seem more hesitent to hire someone who will give the established number 1 a run for their money. I think Ferrari would jump at a chance to hire a sponsor friendly, charismatic driver from Italian decent, who speaks the language fluidly - Ricciardo checks all the boxes.

Ferrari have a car equal to Mercedes, that can work the tires properly, and has a team that is probably the best at strategy in the pitlane. I would suggest they would also pay Danny Ric a lot more money - and he himself has said he can't see himself racing in F1 in his mid-30s, so he will be after a lucrative contract.

One thing I picked up on at the weekend is how quickly people jump to assumptions about the state of a team. Consistently I've heard lots about 'the end of the Mercedes era' because they haven't won any races this season. It's ridiculous really, Hamilton should have won in Australia, Bottas could have won in Bahrain if he'd been more aggressive and, once past Vettel, showed he had the pace to beat Ferrari in China.

It's the same every year, give it 2-3 races and you get various people saying how the year's going to pan out based on a tenth of the season!

I am. Why don't you watch the Melbourne GP again?

I feel like Melbourne was sheer luck and Mercedes sleeping.

Bahrain was just a great job by Vettel managing the tires, but Mercedes had the advantage strategy wise.

And China was really poor as well.

I really can't think of a race where Ferrari won based on their race management during changing situations.

The Kimi roadblock strategy actually worked last year in Hungary when Vettel was having issues but needed the win.

I could understand the move at that race, not in the most recent one though.
It was a terrible move, sure. Not only did it throw Kimi back several places (putting aside the safety car and Max shuffle that put him back to P3), it also had little chance of working on a track like that and is terrible publicity.

I'm curious where McLaren would have been now if they had stayed with Mercedes as engine supplier. Maybe about on par with Red Bull right now?

I think McLaren could've maybe helped bridge the gap with a Mercedes motor. Everybody with Mercedes were doing quite well at that time.

But Jenson won the Brazilian GP in 2012! The last race so obviously best car (rain shmain lol). That was an amazing race, need to watch that again soon: Vettel hit on first lap, rain, Hulkenburg leading, the eyes on Alonso viewing the Vettel celebration, Ferrari's "we love you even though you're second" banner, sogood.gif

Well, McLaren don't have any excuse right now do they?

That car looks like it's not very aero efficient, and given their team that's a surprise. I don't think their situation can be compared to Force India, who by the sounds of it are in financial dire straits. We dont know how much FI have been able to invest into this year's car design, but given McLaren magic'd up $100m to facilitate the divorce from Honda, they'll have spent a ton more.

They were mediocre in 2014 with a shit Ferrari ahead of them. Williams finishing third should be embarrassing to them running the same engine.

No other Merc team has won in this era, and I don't think they would have changed that.

I got Motorsport Manager a few days ago... To say that I should be Ferrari's strategist is an understatement. Ando not for the right reasons. :P

But everyone can build a shit car every now and then. That doesn't mean they won't improve ever again. Force India dropped off this season as well. Are they done, too?

Did I say that they never were going to improve again? The original post was talking about McLaren being a match for Red Bull now.

RIP MGU-H, apparently. It'll be interesting how they'll compensate for the loss of power, it supposedly really helped with turbo lag.

McLaren's 2018 car will make its debut at the Spanish GP.

"The 2018 car as we imagined it will be in Spain. In an ideal world, we would have had it for Australia but it was not possible. So we have used so far a development of the 2017 car,"

I shouldn't get my hopes up but so far all three front runners show signs of trouble, what if McLaren beats all of them and takes the title? No fuck it, I am getting my hopes up, this the year I've been waiting for since 2006. Go Nando!!

Hey guys! First time posting in this (or any) Formula 1 thread, I'm from Colombia and got into F1 following Montoya's career back in the late 90's and early 2000's, when he left F1 I kept watching F1 for some years until the interest faded because I got bored of the "monotony" of the races (I only watched the races)... So I've been mostly a casual follower

I started watching again in 2015 both F1 and IndyCar, but this time I was also watching the things around the race weekend like the "paddock pass", qualys, post race analysis and a lot of stuff you find on Youtube. Somehow all of this coverage has reignited my interest and now I'm hooked in both series, and even thinking on getting the F1 TV membership so I can get a good quality broadcast of the race weekend.

So... Hi everyone, I hope for this season to be very interesting as it has been until now :)
