45k of those are just Sodapoppin, and 27k are Cohhcarnage. It's pretty crazy how drastically the view counts on a game will change based on what big streamers are playing it.

Not to diminish the game (can't wait to get home tonight and play)- but a big, massively hyped AAA game in a popular franchise making the top of Twitch on its release day is not exactly shocking. Especially with a lack of any big esports events or competitions running during this time, which can drive a ton of twitch activity.

I don't want to be Mr. Negative over here, but are these people watching for the game, or for the streamer?

Even when things like Fortnite started to blow up, it was basically 3-4 streamers with comical amounts of viewers into the tens of thousands (who already had fan bases in similar games), then everything else doing like under 300 views.

It's usually a mix of both. When a new game is released, a lot of people will want to watch people playing it, either to check before buying, or just to participate on the hype of a big new release. And then there are those who are just watching the people they like and they happen to be playing that.

Soda likes single player games and theres no surprise he is playing God of War. He's played all of them before on stream.

He's also played the SOTC remake/remaster as well.

It's a new game, ofc it does. We have this kind of thread for basically every somewhat new game (That's not thread whining, it's an observation).

Is it wrong to be frustrated because there's thousands of people out there not actually playing the game, just watching it.

You don't follow Twitch daily, do you ? AFAIK Sea of Thieves had almost 400k viewers and Kingdom Come 250k. It's not that impressive but it will certainly go up since Lirik starts stream in 2 hours and he hyped this game. Expect 50-60k viewers on his channel.

The irony here is that this probably isn't a good thing for the game.
That's what I'm thinking. That's a quarter million people who probably won't buy it because they can just watch someone else play it. Cinematic story-driven game and all.

YouTube playthroughs are hitting, too, I saw a couple on my subscription feed yesterday. I won't be watching any of them until after I've played it.

Yeah watching someone play through an entire single player campaign can't be good for the game. It will still sell high though.

Except the combat is deep and satisfying. This isnt a 10 hour linear corridor game

This pretty much happens to every single new game. Remember when that lame CliffyB game "blew up on Twitch" last week?

AFAIK Sea of Thieves hit a peak of 280k viewers or so. But I agree with the summation that this happens to nearly every big release on Twitch.

The single player nature of God of War is also likely to lead to a sharp decline once people have finished the game on stream.

Yeah? Why would that frustrate you?

Games are expensive. Not everyone has money for new releases.

And frankly, with the state of games today, it's smart to watch some actual gameplay (not just cuts from reviews and media) to make sure it's a purchase you want to make. Certainly saved me some money this gen.

It's normal, big single player games with lots of marketing shoot easily to the top of Twitch on release date. It'll disappear after this weekend.

Dudes, it was meant lightheartedly, i'm not judging people for watching the game on stream.
I just wish they had the means to play the game themselves seeing as the feel of the combat is often referenced as the very best part of the game.

And know you see why the industry has started to pivot away from these types of games. I'm sure God of war will be OK backed by Sony, but imagine how frustrated devs feel when people watch their games instead of buying it.

If you followed twitch closely you'd know that AAA releasing on pc will have more views than just on a console. Simple reason being the biggest twitch streamers play multiplayer games on pc and apart from lirik and soda not many play single player or console exclusive games. Sea of thieves for example had shroud and summit play bringing 50k+ viewers each but neither will probably play god of war coz no pc.

Big releases always do but they also die down really quick, look at Monster Hunter. Once the "casuals" and I don't mean this in a mean way, finished the game only the veterans kept streaming and playing.

Not really. A lot of players will probably buy the game if they like what they see.

I think you're right on this, but I have a feeling there's more lost sales in it than gained. But I have zero data to back it up. Either way, it's good that Sony isn't dumb enough to be paranoid like a lot of Japanese companies (lookin at you Atlus) and ban streaming all together because of it.

Guys, this will be the best selling game of 2018

While I'm sure the game will sell quite well, I also think some of the big hitter multiplatform games will still outsell it.

I also think IF a Pokemon game comes out in 2018 (personally I think it won't) then GoW won't be the best selling game of the year.

It is still release day, so of course its doing numbers on Twitch
It's a new game. Of course it's gonna have a lot of viewers.
This always happens when a new big AAA game releases
New games jump up on Twitch during their first days and water is wet.
Do we really need to have this thread literally every time a new game releases?
Doesn't this happen with every big AAA game?
I mean, the game came out today so lol
Most games do day 1.
Breaking: OP makes shocking discovery: new games are popular on Twitch!

Maybe not AAA, but there was a lot of hype behind this for a while...

It's a single player game. So after today interest will go down. But i am interested to see how much it peaks at. This game is going to sell insanely well.

So much downplaying in this thread. Can we get comparison numbers for other big games fromthe past year to see how God Of War stacks up?

Big streamers play new game - surprise

It's normal, big single player games with lots of marketing shoot easily to the top of Twitch on release date. It'll disappear after this weekend.

Has nothing to do with Singleplayer Game
Everything that isn't a PC E-sports game or Fortnite/PubG disappears after Release
The mighty Multiplayer Game Sea of Thieves(which started this nonsense about the "importance" about twitch viewer numbers at release on this forum) is crawling around at 5-10k most of these days and is currently even sitting at around 1k.

So much downplaying in this thread. Can we get comparison numbers for other big games fromthe past year to see how God Of War stacks up?

Most new games peak at around 250-300k for a ouple hours or maybe 1-2 days.
Depends WHO is playing it and how many big streamers are streaming it at the same time.
Games with a PC Version usually have it a little bit easier because for example some of the very big streamers hate consoles and even said God of War doesn't exist because it isn't on PC.

Mh will have more streamers once pc port releases. A lot of streamers don't play on consoles at all.
