https://news.avclub.com/terry-crews-calls-masculinity-a-cult-1825400504

Terry Crews surprised many last fall when he came forward with his own story of sexual assault, which served as a reminder that the traumatizing effects of predatory behavior aren't in any way diminished by physical strength. Crews' vulnerability has since found him taking action, both through filing criminal charges against his high-powered abuser and by speaking out against the ever-boiling subculture of toxic masculinity that gives way to this kind of male entitlement.

The above clip was taken at the ninth annual Women in the World summit, where Crews proclaimed that "masculinity can be a cult" and thus sent the internet's most insecure flocking to his Twitter mentions. "And when I say cult," he adds, "it's no different than David Koresh, it's no different than Jim Jones."

Citing a "lack of empathy," Crews explains how society and culture have essentially programmed men to see women only in terms of what they can do for them, thus rendering them less than human. "Men who are in this cult," he says, "you can see as a woman, they talk, but a guy is not looking at you as even all the way human. And this is what you have to understand, there is a humanity issue here. You're like, 'Why don't you hear me? Why don't you see my feelings?' And they're like, 'But you're not all the way human. You're here for me. You're here for my deal.' And this is real."

He's also quick to point out his own transgressions. Saying that he once "believed simply because I am a man, that I was more valuable than my wife and than the other women in my life," he recalls going to strip clubs and bristling at the women who talked about their personal lives because they were "becoming a human before my eyes."

Terry is the absolute best there is.

Not much to add besides, 'he's right'.

I wonder if there's a way through education to deconstruct this cycle? Would the media influences still overpower it?

What a guy! Masculinity is some dumb shit and needs to go extinct along with the neanderthals who obsess over it.

Not a big celebrity guy typically, but I would love to sit down and have a conversation with this man.

I agree.

Unfortunately, it will never change.
It will change in certain ways. 100 years ago these types of conversations would be unthinkable.

There are inherent natures in our gender that will ensure certain values are maintained like men mostly persuing women and women conforming to some stricter standard of beauty than men.

But the way women can stand up for themselves more with each generation will have an influence on long term relationships. Who knows about fling culture.

You know this shit is true when you realize you gotta explain to people "#metoo" is not an "attack on men" by bringing up that Terry motherfucking Crews was sexually harassed and is part of the movement, because people into this cult can't empathize until you bring up that men are also victims.

Agree 100%. My wife and I get so much shit because she's the "bread winner" and I'm a stay at home husband. She is definitely way more vocal than me. We're also best friends and some people at just baffled by how we can spend so much time together. We even do matching outfits sometimes and I love it. We're huge dorks, but she's supposed to be the ole ball and chain, women amirite? It's so archaic. I admire her so much.

Neither of us should be seen as "lesser" as a result.

Seriously though Crews is one of the only celebs who the more I hear about, the BETTER of a person he seems to be.

It definitely can be. I don't know what the internet's obsession is lately with labeling men cucks or soyboys, and talking about alpha males but it's gotten to the point where it's just sad to see.

The thread title suggests that he was referring to masculinity as a cult in general, which as a statement I would disagree with. Masculinity, like any social construct, is a complex beast. Reading the actual post however reveals a more nuanced approach to how it "can be like a cult" and I completely agree with him 100% on that. Any sort of social construct can form a cult like behaviour amongst people who adhere to its values, or lack thereof. I would say though that masculinity is by far the most dangerous cult there has been over the last few thousand years.

Literally the only things i know about this Terry Crews person is that he's connected to Crackdown somehow and that everytime there's a thread about him he's spitting hot fire. Seems like a cool guy.
