The Dark Sword is still good. If you're sticking with Strength/Heavy: Exile Greatsword, Great Club, Claymore, Splitleaf Greatsword (2nd DLC, mainly for PvP), Millwood Battle Axe (1st DLC).
Generally the Lothric Knight Sword is considered the best with a sharp or dark (for PvP) infusion.
Thanks for the tip, but damage wasn't the issue. I did try that spell but my fire broadsword was more dps. The problem was hp and stamina, though mainly hp. I upped that a few levels and stamina one level and took him down. I also made a few armor changes. I think I bumped up to level 29. I was primarily getting one-shotted, once my hp was enough to sustain more than one hit I was fine. After increasing a few levels it only took me a few tries.

My god. That guy has caused me some grief. For me, he's easily the most difficult Soulsbourne boss. My heart was beating out of my chest, and my hands were shaking after he fell. I hadn't felt that kind of rush since O&S.

Cruising through Dark Souls III on my second attempt. I barely got past Vordt the first time before other games came up but I found the combo that really clicked with me and I'm already zooming through the Undead Settlement. Just going pure strength right now with a battle axe. I started trying out dex with the double scimitars but I was just struggling with the moveset and couldn't even kill the first boss. Made a new character as a Warrior and smashed him the first time, killed Vordt real quick too. Just feels so good demolishing people with it. I'm looking at getting Vordt's hammer but I don't have access to transpose souls yet.
Playing through DS3 again to finally do Ringed City DLC w a friend online. We're having fun so far, I think, after figuring out how to kill the Angels. Anyway, I noticed this (and I asked it in the dumb gaming questions that don't deserve their own thread topic but no hits yet):
What's with the weird line-breaks in item descriptions?
Anyone else notice this? It's all over the place, and considering how lore-intensive and cryptic things are in these games, the way the in-menu descriptions of items only adds to confusion.

I know this is a late response but I'm reading through this topic on a current playthrough and would like to comment, despite having beaten all the Souls games, and not having an issue my first playthrough, on my current I rerolled as an Assassin (or whoever starts with a Rapier, a weapon I've never used) and holy fuck was that annoying. Finally had to get good at parrying.
I'm up to Irithyll and Iudex is still the boss that's killed me the most times so far
The crocodile on the bridge was worse though
Just beat Pontiff Sulvayhn and cleared the dungeon up to the Profaned Capital. Got invaded by an Aldrich Faithful who was quite good at dodging my Exile Greatsword swings. Need to bait them in better.
I think this is why Dark Souls 3 has the best opening boss in the series in my opinion.
Now I didn't have any issues with him, but I do think he was perfectly balanced for being your first real threat in the game.
He's such a raw fight, I was very impressed when I first started the game.
Just beat Aldrich then Dancer last night. Sulvayhn is the boss that has given most the most trouble but once I got the dodge timings down it went well. Aldrich absolutely demolished me with arrows as I was running to initiate. My Exile Greatsword is doing so much damage right now. It packs a punch but also has some real nice combos that let you get damage in fast. I really like the rolling attack combo. It has a nice spin so you can roll into a group and hit them all.
So I recently started DS3 up again after not playing it for quite some time, and abandoning my first playthrough early on. These games are absolutely right in my wheelhouse, but I always get annoyed with them just due to not being patient enough. So when I picked the game back up, I told myself this time would be different. I'd patiently play the game and play it the way it's supposed to be played. Surprisingly I'm doing a LOT better and really enjoying myself. I rolled as a Pyro and that's what I'm going with, but I'm not really enjoying it anymore, now that I know how to play with blocking/rolling, etc.
Anyway, I made it to Farron Keep and the Abyss Watchers. Normally I'd get my ass kicked and quit and put down the game after dying a ton. This time, after maybe only 10 deaths I beat them and was quite happy with myself.
That being said, am I able to reroll now and possibly respec to a different build, or respec my levels? Cause I feel like I'm going about where to increase my levels all wrong.

You can re-allocate your points if you join a certain covenant.
It's called Rosaria's Fingers. It's an invasion covenant at the very top of the Cathedral of the Deep. Should be a couple ledges you can jump down on the opposite side when you enter the ceiling area (walking on the arches with the knights). You can offer her Pale Tongues to be reborn up to 5 times per New Game. Just know that offering the Tongues turns another NPC hostile if you're into quests but it will also lead you on another quest.
I just got to the Profaned Capital as well. I read a lot of people groaning about the enemies in the dungeon beforehand but I found it more entertaining and challenging. I was dreading going there but ended up really, really enjoying the whole area.
It was interesting. Did not know about the lanterns until I saw what my health bar was doing.
If you'll see my post above, I recently picked the game back up after getting frustrated with it. I started up with a pyro I had gotten about 12 hours into the game with. Well I've not beaten the Abyss Watchers, and I'm either going to go down to the Catacombs or go to the Cathedral of the Deep. I beat Crystal Sage. Now that I'm enjoying the game, I'm not quite enjoying the pyro. I like the shield/sword combo and if I were to reroll now and respec my character, what would be the best stats to pump into? I'm currently SL 40...maybe 45.
I see some of these walkthroughs with guys carrying big ass swords. Now I get that might be a NG+, but it looks pretty fun just wielding something like that and rolling around and killing enemies.

The Profaned Capital is really cool, but I was disappointed in how small it was. From above it looks so incredible, you feel like you're going to slowly descend into this abandoned hellhole of an ancient civilization ravaged by time, monsters and all that Souls-y stuff, and then... it's already over. :(
For a melee build invest in Vigor, Endurance and Strength/Dex (either or both depending on the weapons you want to use). The bigger weapons don't need to wait until NG+, based on where you are you already have access to some good ones. Typically the big weapons scale better with a Heavy infusion.
I started this after finally getting back into From games. I've beaten DS1,2 and finally BB last week. I decided to do a Dexerity build and have had the hardest time in the world with regular enemies up to the second boss! Then I just restarted as a Knight and the entire game is so much easier. Of course the armor and weapon affects that, but even the enemies level of aggression is completely different! Is this an actual thing or did I just get unlucky? Enemies were spamming throwing knives repeatedly when I was a Dex build and I had to constantly dodge. As a Knight they don't even bother, and they're not as aggressive either.
I haven't had a chance to play through it, got to the bonfire and had to stop playing that day. Hopefully later this week I have some time to play.
Not really playing Dark Souls III, but I thought this article about the meta narrative of the series was an interesting enough read. It's as a sort of reflection on the trilogy's thematic thrust and how we players want to see them to the end, seek finality, and also keep coming back to them, in light of the upcoming release of Dark Souls Remastered. Some story spoilers for Dark Souls II and III, but everybody who posts here have finished all three, right?
I'm stuck on the Twin Princes, which is the first boss that's given me a real extended difficulty. I've summoned multiple times, and the people always die before the 2nd half. Bleh. I went through the whole game with an Ultra Greatsword, but I switched to a Blood Bandit Knife for this fight which is actually working pretty well....I guess not well enough. When I don't have another person trading their attention with the boss, I mess up the second stage. Hopefully I'll have better luck later tonight.
First time playing through (Finished Souls 1/2 and Bloodborne before), running a dex-faith build with twindaggers. The quickstep on the twindaggers is absolutely lovely.
Just got to Lothric Castle/Consumed King's Garden, and found Oceiros. The Dancer was annoying as fuck.
That's probably the hardest non-boss part of the DLC. It's a long section and imo there's no shame in running past enemies to the swamp bonfire and handling that last staircase area by backtracking later.
I actually did it all, cause I had no idea where the bonfire was and probably wasted more time than necessary. But it feels good to have accomplished it. I found the bonfire with zero flasks but the whole stairway was clear. It was pure luck I went right at the swamp instead of left I guess.
Try to stay in front of him and only attack his head. That reduces the camera issues, plus the head takes more damage.
Pretend you're a snack just keeping out of his reach. Doing so tends to bait attacks that have plenty of recovery time -- enough to land fully charged R2's.
In addition to what EasyMode has said, I'll add: fight him like you would Amygdala (the defiled version), assuming you played Bloodborne of course. Stay in front of the head and focus on it and make sure the camera centers on it, yes, but also don't get greedy when the head is down either, if you whiff you're probably gonna be very exposed and take ton of damage.
Wow, you weren't exaggerating. Aside from the side area which doesn't have to be completed, that area was crazy short. After I crossed the bridge and got through the first group of enemies I was thinking, "ok, this is nice..." then it's over.

Use the twisted sword to create a bonfire in the center of the room. You can then warp to the next location.
Getting towards the end of my second Dark Souls II playthrough and looking at gear for my second playthrough of the third game, this time tackling the DLC.
What's the earliest feasible time/level to get the Crow Quills from the Ariandel DLC? They're just the kind of quirky rapier that was missing from the base game for me.

You can access Ariandel when you get to the Cleansing Chapel bonfire at Cathedral of the Deep, so around SL 30+. I usually save the DLC for end-game, but you can make an early run for the Crow Quills if you're up for the challenge.
Yeah it shouldn't be so bad if you just run past the mobs. You don't have to kill any DLC boss to acquire it.
I've become proficient at doing the suicide-run for the Parrying Dagger in New Londo for the original game, so hopefully I should be able to do this.

Those items, plus using rusted coins bought from Patches will get you max Item Discovery (short of putting points into Luck).
