The Gil comics are so bad, the aunt and boyfriend are way to young to have these opinions.
Dude's humor is so bad, he should get into drawing soft core porn, he could make some money on paetron.

It doesn't even have the decency to be weird bad like Heathcliff or Marmaduke.

This thread is wonderful. I had no idea about Nancy, sadly, but the original strips are brilliant and the new artist is bringing back that same quality.

The previous fellow just isn't funny at all. It's almost tragic how little he kept of the original spirit.

No spark. Other newspaper strips have been able to combine humor with a bit of spice and innuendo but the dude failed even at that. It's painfully bland.

The earliest Guy strips on the Go Comics are actually pretty decent. Seems like he got lazy or his writing partner was the actual hero there.

Me 3 days ago: what the fuck is a Nancy?

Me today: Olivia Jaimes perfectly transfers and modernizes the qualities that made the Ernie Bushmiller's Nancy a classic, qualities that were lost ever since Guy Gilchrist took over. Olivia Jaimes is not changing Nancy but rather bringing it back to what it once was.
Does Nancy have an evil twin or something?
I think they're both the evil twin.

Lol at the age of the comic being a factor. How old is Superman? People are super calm about changes in his books right?

I like a lot of the new ones. The Bushmiller ones are god-tier though. Nancy may be my new favorite comic strip

Its not like bushmiller didnt use fritzi as a sexy lady in his strips (heard here thay she wasnt a bimbo at the beggining, something that is clearly not true and btw he didnt create fritzi either but he got the original comic from Larry Wittington), but his jokes are a million times better, and eyecandy if used sporadically is not bad.

Also the shitty Guy Gilchrist clearly didnt want to draw a nancy comic but an archie one, he changed completly the artsyle, and the phil character is also clearly a selfinsert.

Gilchrist is what happens when you have to write one joke a day, everyday, for 22 years. At some point you run out of material. It's exacerbated worse in his case by the lack of talent.

I spent a few minutes poking around in the archives just now, looking at random strips from the first few years of his run, and I really don't think its quality being partially due to the length of time he was doing it is the case, honestly? His jokes are bad (even the ones close to the original style are overexplained, ruining the joke) even in the 90s when he was just starting. He was already doing the music stuff and drawing her aunt like that in 1997:

The only funny part of this is that it turns out he already did the same joke 11 years before.

As a teacher who just got back from a spring break of slacking off, watching anime, and playing video games, this comic spoke to me on a spiritual level.

We're only a bit over a week into this new author/reboot, and it's insane how much better it is.
Sending to a myriad of teacher friends right now....so good

So ive been poking more about Bushmiller's strip, and discovered that before he added nancy and it was just a Fritzi strip, he even created phil.

So what Gilchrist wanted to do it seems was really a Fritzi Ritz strip instead of nancy one but they probably didnt let him get rid completely of nancy.
And even then Bushmiller's fritzi ritz strips are better and funnier than the shit Gilchrist was trying to pass for a romantic and old people nostalgia strip.

I feel like I'm missing the joke here. What exactly is supposed to be good about these comics? These are horrible.

But anyway, now I became a fan of the original and new Nancy, why people don't talk that much of her like Calvin & Hobbes? did Gilhrist really sent the series to oblivion?
I've seen a number of young animators and comic artists over the years that were hip to classic Nancy and cited it as an inspiration, but otherwise yeah the Gilchrist era made everyone entirely disinterested in Nancy, if not outright hate it.

This is impressively bad

This is where I'm at. The Ernie Bushmiller stuff is fantastic in that it--what I've seen, anyway--hasn't lost any humor with age. Not sure how long Snapchat filters are going to be in the modern lexicon. But at least it's not the jokeless desert that the Gilchrist stuff is.

Its funny how the pervert boomer artist went to such lenghts to draw as well as he could aunt fritzi on every panel, while every time he draws nancy or sluggo the art is pretty bland. And im not referring at the artstyles just that you can see he doesnt give a crap on the penceling inking and colour if he is not drawing his beloved waifu.

In fact i prefer the original old Bushmiller art (and that still had the good looking aunt fritzi just in a 1920's style that worked much better with nancy and sluggo instead of archie) to the pervert artists art and also Olivia's art.
The joke and panel structure of Olivia's is pretty good and faithful to the original, but the art is mediocre as hell sadly, in fact i think the coloring isnt doing it any favours and it would work better in black and white. The Bushmiller backgrounds are simple yet really nicely drawn, and the character poses are used really well for tell the jokes, something I fill is really missing in olivia's art.

Well the thing is some old newspaper stripcomics like nancy used a similar 3-4 panels jokes and punchline as japanese 4komas. As Pop Team Epic is a 4koma not only on its pages but also the animators decoded to translate that similar 4koma ke style to the screen they could seem pretty similar to todays readers. The difference is that while original nancy used sometimes surreal humour and 4th wall meta (those artists is lazy strips and characters talk about it could perfectly be a pop team epic joke), the majority of it were direct good simple punchline jokes, while pop team epic has some of those, but the majority of the time tries to go incredibly meta trolling its audience with post surrealist humour.

I agree here; the Antichrist strips are awful to the point of being unsettlingly creepy; but the change is so radical I do understand why previous fans may be upset. That might not be a bad thing though.

I also agree that the original strips are more timeless and that the newer ones aren't so great, though they are much closer to the true spirit of the comic and aren't abominations.
