Just watched that episode yesterday with my gf. She was so digusted by Sangmin and Jiwon that she doesnt want to watch any genius anymore. Season 2 has really the worst people on it.

Jiwon I get but why Sangmin?

Overall the more I think about it the more season 2 is a real rough patch, pretty much everything aside from a few episodes was bad. I loved it while I was watching it but its definitely the weakest one in retrospect.

You should encourage her to give Season 3 a try. They spoil the outcome of Season 2 but the vibe is much more playful in the third season.

Wow, Minseo got played. She bit off more than she could chew trying to play for both sides like that. It's a shame cuz I liked her. I seriously thought Yuram was gonna leave for a moment, but good for her for turning that around.

Gura is an evil mastermind, isn't he?

You've got the bug, the only solution is to watch all four seasons

I was really surprised at Jimmy Cha getting eliminated there, was expecting him to go far.

Tactical Yutnori might be the best death match game ever tbh

This was probably the hardest to watch after s2e6 ): Using Hyunmin's own strategy against him to not even give him and Dongmin a chance was just sad. I'm really glad he won the death match, but watching Hyunmin cry after was horrible. Jongbum hugging him was also really sweet, I think he lost with a lot of grace. I swear if Dongmin and Hyunmin don't go to the finals together it won't feel right!
E8 being a rush to last place was so funny. Dongmin should've just used $0 every round for a surefire last, because there's no way they'd catch on in the very first round. But also Yeonjoooo ): Why'd she go talk about Dongmin's plan when she wasn't committed to either side. Watching Dongmin and Yoohyun trying to work together in E9 was also funny, they really don't get along. I totally didn't expect Yeonjoo to win that death match too, wow.

I thought episode 3 was was emotional, but the death match in the next two episodes were heartbreaking. It was hilarious to see Eunji trick everyone and still not win the main match, lol.

To be honest, I'm glad Gura left. He started out as this villain I loved to hate but he disappointed me in the last two episodes. People were tiptoing around him for being "the boss" but he was too far up in the character he estalished for himself to even bother trying to survive. The indian poker was great though, it reminded me of Kakegurui.

Go Kyungran!

I never thought yutnori could be so nervewracking. Those two matches were intense.

I agree. He went too deep! It felt bittersweet, but I think Gura had become too salty over the past two games.

Go Sangmin!

I'm really happy the dream duo made it together! That's amazing. That montage of them talking about their friendship in the beginning had me smiling so hard.

I told myself I would be happy whoever wins but I think I was unconsciously hoping Hyunmin would more ): It's really sad to see he had such a disadvantage with the disproportionate giving of items and support. He did well to overcome that the best he could. But I'm still happy for Dongmin! He's really funny and seems like a really genuine person, plus he absolutely killed the last two games. This season was so nice and feelgood after the cutthroatness of season 2, only episode 7 had me upset. But onto season 4! Which I shouldn't be watching because I have work to do but I will anyways orz

Glad to see a thread made for this spectacular show, so sad that another season isn't in the works. Jinho always manages to mind boggle me throughout the first season.

GODDAMN JINHO GODDAMN

Also, man, Poong got plastered all over the walls. Rough.

Damn, you guys are making progress.

Probably the most iconic moment of the Genius. A truly remarkable play, I literally could not comprehend how it was possible until the trick was shown.

The absolute funniest part of The Genius is dealer Nuna throwing up a coin and clumsily catching it while looking very afraid of dropping it. It gets me every time.

Kinda salty about Eunji surviving once again, but what can you do. This episode made me like Sangmin a little less, though. I think I'm leaning towards Jinho now.

Damn, you guys are making progress.
I can only watch it on the weekends since I'm watching it with my girlfriend and brother, haha. I'd probably be at season 3 at this point if it wasn't for that :P

S4 is so tense and wild and the best. Sorry for the big text dumps!
That deathmatch was crazy! I went in totally thinking Hyunmin was going to kill it because he did so well w/ Same Number Hunt previously but Yoonsun was also amazing. I strongly thought she was going to win at one point because Hyunmin seemed really shaken up. I'm sad he didn't pick someone else (coughcoughKyunghoon), I wanted to see what Yoonsun could do if she survived longer.

Also the main match was incredible. I had the nagging thought sometime went horribly wrong with the Hyun/Dongmin plan because it wasn't hyped up as a big reveal, but then I thought maybe they just needed to get it out to explain the saving Jinho/Kyungran/Yeonseung from last place drama. But it actually did go horribly wrong and it was because of Yeonseung, ahhh. I'm so proud of Yeonseung for being the backstabber he dreamed of. I 100% wasn't even considering Hyunmin would come last, that reveal was wild. Also Jinho remaining loyal and refusing to drop to $1 in round 3(?I think) was heartwarming, I feel like he's the most trustworthy person left with Yeonseung changing his playstyle like that.
I loved the prematch banter in this ep so much. Kyungran and Yoonsun fighting, Chanyeop's ghost, all the dog stuff, lolol

Kyunghoon is as chaotic stupid as always, at least it's funny watching everyone telling him to leave. It was really annoying seeing how Sangmin kept getting into bad situations because of Kyunghoon and eventually being eliminated. Especially because Sangmin was making really cool plays, what with knowing the box mechanism and teaming up with Hyunmin and Dongmin because he was under the table.
I'm really disappointed the big alliance didn't even consider that the coins you support have less coins to move, lol. It was one of the first thing I noticed and I was looking forward to how they navigated that supporting the minority character was much easier. They also completely gave up on bringing their piece first when they could've used ties a lot, especially with how they controlled the last couple players. Sad to see Yohwan leave so early, I liked seeing him do wild unnecessary stuff in the main matches that ultimately didn't accomplish much :(

Oh same, she just looks so concerned every time that she'll drop it. Her showing any emotion is bound to be funny, I have no clue how she keeps such a straight face and flat voice through all the antics.

Man, that episode is such a bummer with how Sangmin goes out... But that tease with the boxes, and how they show that giant pile-up in the previews. I remember thinking at the time, "What the hell is about to happen?" And then when Kyunghoon does go for it, it's just amazing. It's a shame it didn't really work out. They made that game really interesting and chaotic.

Agree with you on E4. Yeonseung is the man! Also Junseok, but whatever.

It's amazing how good 1-2-3 game turned out giving new viewer memorable characters right from the start -- you get all kinds of plays in the premiere -- Cha gathers big crowd and reveals simplistic 3 strategy, Jungmoon and Changeyop go a bit beyond that and do a safe 4:4 play, Jinho and Junseok create the best power strat of 9:0 but get too afraid to execute it fully which becomes their downfall, Sangmin tries to bond with Sunggyu but Sunggyu looking at Sangmin as "has-been", Gura being the shadow version of Cha, Eunji being kinda busybody running around investigating shadowy figure behind Sunggyu's win, Kyungran the puppet master, Sangmin creating a fun twist (Bangarang!) out of thin air and book-smart gamer Jinho collectively made into a fool by entire cast because "that'd more fun".

Also -- Jinho is 2nd winner and he has 2 garnets AND he was placed 11th in deathmatch RPS line-up (1+1=2). That 2 will haunt Jinho forever.

It is very fun to reminisce and look at the very first episode of The Genius with the knowledge of what's going to happen in S1.

Even more fun to look at The Genius at bigger scale and compare 1-2-3 to Grand Finale. First episode of season 4 feels very much like a "nostalgic" callback to the very first episode and has a similar "everyone vs everyone" feel. But the landscape has changed. Among experienced TG players "simple!" strats just don't fly and there are numerous "game breakers" just waiting for their chance.

In the very last episode (no spoilers!) level of gameplay jumps further exponentially to mindboggling math expressions like these:

finalroundmath42osn.jpg

TG's biggest achievement is casting and nurturing players into intellectual giants capable to manipulate numbers like these under pressure. Still, as impressive sheer mental prowess of the finalists is, fair-play attitude is just as important. I still think of individual performance in 4x11 and 4x12 as some of the classiest behavior ever. Not just on game show or on TV in general, just -- ever.

"Ugly victories and beautiful defeats..."

Cosmic level of competition but also prevailing fair conduct. Edit weaving the footage of 13 people playing board games into compelling arcs. Montage of finalists in the spotlight talking about their lives up to this moment and contrasting and comparing between them -- this editing is much a masterclass as the ensuing mental battle itself. The Genius is an inspiring triumph of performance from both playing cast and production team alike.

DVu9Jf0.png

There will never be more of The Genius and there will never be anything like The Genius. Producer ended it at it's peak ("leave when your audience still wants for more"):

It is a good thing. Your memories of the show are still there and you can learn from them to always strive to be a better, smarter and more wholesome person in your professional and personal life.

Some interviews after the show ended:
Yeonseung's great write-up about his experience on the show
Youhyun's interviews, one on youtube:

NO FUCKING WAY.

Man... This is completely insane. This episode was insane. Sang-Min's downfall. Never thought I'd live to see it. And by Kyunghoon? Man. Sang-Min never was my favourite player, tactics were always a bit dirty, but I wouldn't wish this on anybody...

If Kyunghoon goes through a Sunggyu type evolution this season my mind will be blown.

So far the season is shaping up to be the best one yet. I do hope we'll see more episodes were the games can be broken by something other than politics.

I will repost a great reaction to 4x03 posted on Dom and Colin's blog:

Letter on behalf of the King

Hi, my name is Hob, I'm from Brazil, and first of all, I apologize for any errors in English and by the size of this letter.
That said, i must reveal that for a few months I've been following silently your podcast. I'm not sure how it started, but now I am a regular visitor of your blog.

Ok, enough about me. I want to talk about a man. A man I began to follow 3 months ago, when I watched the first episode of the first season of The Genius. I didn't know at the time, but he would become my favorite contestant of any reality show in the world.

His name: Lee Sangmin

In the progress of the episodes, I was more amazed by his skill, his divine intuition, his ability to manipulate people and his vein for entertainment. Sangmin is a player who delivers all his heart to the game, a will to win as contagious, and at the same time, light-hearted, that I was infected. I rooted so much for Sangmin that in S1E11, I was saddened by his elimination, one step from the end. However, I considered him the MVP of the season and really enjoyed finding a player as impressive and a fantastic show.

Little did I know that there would be more. As an addict that I am when I like something, I watched the second season soon after, getting immensely surprised to the presence of Jinho and Sangmin. My immediate reaction was fear. I didn't want another Cesternino in All Stars. Contrary to my expectations, Sangmin simply destroyed the second season - episode 6 is so far my favorite episode from a reality show - and was crowned champion.

Then I watched S3, and, although good, is not the same without Sangmin. For me, in addition to good games and strategies, The Genius won me over in what I call The Sangmin's Moment. When the music starts playing and the drums comes into flames, I know that something crazy will happen. So maybe for this reason S3 is the season I like the least.

Two weeks after finishing the third season (and consumed everything that you have posted on the blog about the show), I was again worried by Sangmin in what is possibly the last season of The Genius. After two great episodes, we come across that fateful episode; the elimination of Sangmin.

It's funny that, the elimination of a contestant is similar to a death of a character in a film or a series. We feel pain and sorrow because we know that is it, it's over, we will never see them again. With that in mind, I admit that I was very sad. I think even felt a little pathetic for getting so bad that way.

Hours after the end of the third episode, I tried to understand my own sense of defeat, feeling that this was bullshit. Until I realized that this was no ordinary elimination. It was my favorite player of all time.

Of course, Hyumin, Jinho and Dongmin are all bright. But what separates the best from everybody else, is its unique character. Sangmin makes you eliminate your own ally. Sangmin sells someone for Garnets. Sangmin brings Haha. Sangmin is a double agent. Sangmin is a triple agent. Sangmin raps. Sangmin radomly dances in the floor. Sangmin draws the Snake. Sangmin looks at you and find out if you're lying. Sangmin takes a selfie with the token of immortality. Sangmin hides under the table. Sangmin is funny as Rob Cesternino, dominates like Boston Rob and Kim Spradlin, is a showman as Dan Gheesling and a supreme being of evil as Dr. Will. And above all, he is as skilled as those cited. Sangmin is magic. There is only one Sangmin, and there will only be one Sangmin until the end of times. For me, Sangmin is THE GENIUS.

Forever in my heart he will be the best player of the genius of all time and of any reality TV show in the world. This may have been the "death" of Sangmin and his last participation in the genius, but his legend will continue forever.

So, I just wanna thank you guys for introduce me to the genius, and let me know about the greatness of Lee Sangmin.

All Hail

The Black Magician
The Crazy Bastard
The Demon King
….
GOD SANGMIN.

Wow, Sunggyu's not kidding around. I wasn't expecting that at all. Expression Auction is up there with Open, Pass as the most entertaining matches for me.

Ah, Park Eunji...

I loved her busybody attitude in episode 1, but sadly she didn't do much after that. I thought for sure she was going to be eliminated early on.

Then episode 7 happened. The match against Poong was very exciting and I liked her back and forth with Sunggyu. For someone with such a bad poker face, she did well in the death matches. But all good things must come to an end, and she was eliminated in the match against Jinho. I think her odds of winning were slim, but I like to believe she could've had a chance if Kyungran didn't get confused about their plan. Her BTS scene made me cry :(

All things said, I'm happy she got fifth place. This show is so unpredictable, the people you think are going far are eliminated early and the people you think won't last almost make it to the end.

Oh, man, Sunggyu :(

Reality show drama really gets to me, even though all of this happened like 5 years ago hahaha.

I'm glad my 4 favorite players ended up in the first 4 places. I'd be livid if Eun-ji had managed to get that far :P

Finished S4 today.

Great episode to end the series with.

Don't know how I'd rank the series, I loved them all. Some of the games I enjoyed more than others though, that's for sure.

No Jinho :(

He was always my favourite, from the start of the very first episode. It's a shame we haven't seen any of the brilliance of season 1 after that...

I really like the players that use their intelligence to win the games versus politics and a lot of the games this season have been geared toward the latter. And the fact that all deathmatch games are known beforehand means that people can practice. I don't really like that about this season.

And now we have three people left and I don't really like any of them. Kyunghoon to finish his kingslaying maybe... Hyunmin... was a lot more likeable in season 3. Dong min probably deserves it the most, his game has been incredible. But he relies on politics a bit too much for my tastes.

So I started S2 and I'm on episode 5... I'm loving the games, but I'm not sure I like the contestants. It's not that I dislike anyone individually (yet), but as a cast they're not even close to S1.

Certain things in episode 2 and 4 annoyed me, so I'm bracing myself for episode 6.

EDIT: I can't help but feel like Hongchul's a huge miscast, though. His personality feels so out of place here (and I generally like him on TV).

Hrm just finished season 2...

Anyone else feel like Sangmin was more or less handed the victory? I dunno something about this season didn't sit right with me. I really felt like despite how amazing Jinho vs. Jiwon was in terms of tensity that after Jinho was eliminated the season went downhill. I feel like Sangmin was never put in a disadvantageous situation whatsoever. Then they bring all of those S1 people back which of course they're gonna back Sangmin cause they're all buddies. The season was good but I hope season 3 and 4 get better than this. Even Johan's play of cheesy the win by survivng without putting any efforts kind of rubs me wrong.

I think it was more that the S2 personalities were not strong enough to counteract Sangmin's brand of control. Pretty much what happened in Survivor when Boston Rob got put on the island with a cast of newbies.

To me S3 and S4 are much stronger because there are other players willing to play on that level

Jinho! :D

I started cheering for him on episode 7. He tried sharing with the other players and was unfairly shunned, and then came back with the perfect score. A winner's play.

I ended up being a bit disappointed by Kyungram in the end. Really poor individual performances :(

Onto S2!

I thought she did pretty damn well against the death match master Jinho. I genuinely feel she would've dominated Season 2 easily if she was a part of that cast.

I enjoyed Season 2 while watching it but in retrospect I think it was pretty weak. Quattro was so RNG for a finale game which was disappointing.

Quattro itself was fine but the way they played it was super disappointing. I really feel like they should've gotten some form of eye contact with the people they were trading.

That's what I mean Quattro is fine when it has the social element like the excellent deathmatch at the end of Season 2 Episode 1 but the way they played it for the final didn't have that

I thought she did pretty damn well against the death match master Jinho. I genuinely feel she would've dominated Season 2 easily if she was a part of that cast.
I feel like half of S2 shenanigans would not have happened if she was there.

^ this is a promo pic for TG spinoff special of sorts, Sangmin talked to a lot Genius people and did two poker games Jinho vs Yohwan and Dongmin vs Dealer Hong.

Bumdi didn't translate actual games saying they were boring, but here are other segments:

Yeah I think so. For whatever reason ODK, Netflix, and the general internet never came to consensus on the english translation of the show's name. It's a great formula though, and Poong is sort of like the "what if your college eating style could turn you into a chef?"

i only started watching the genius because i exhausted my supply of chef and my fridge, and it's so great.

at s1e8 now and i like how the games are getting more cutthroat as it's harder to rely on alliances.

Jinho! :D

I started cheering for him on episode 7. He tried sharing with the other players and was unfairly shunned, and then came back with the perfect score. A winner's play.

I ended up being a bit disappointed by Kyungram in the end. Really poor individual performances :(

Onto S2!
I thought she did fairly well. Sucks that she was afraid of calling Gyul since her supporters weren't good at the game, maybe she'd have won. Though I'm sure Jinho would have beat her in the memory game (I don't remember the name!).

Current status: constantly listening to IDIOTAPE on repeat.
Same.

Agreed. I thought Yoonsun was going to be like Kyungran but nope, she can't pull that off.

Very glad to see the garbage disposed of early on. Holy shit that guy.

Jinho and Sangmin <3

Jinho's evasive maneuvers that round had me cackling. And it was so fitting that Sangmin got the snake.

Season 2's opening was actually really hype now that I think about it. Them introducing Jinho and then his eternal rival right after... so good.
