Okay I saw this thread and thought the new artist was pretty good (I love the expression in the bots one and lol'd at the sweet girl one) but I just read through the past few pages and the original ones are EVEN BETTER.

Cross-posting from the other thread but the original angry-eyebrows Marmaduke was replaced with the more Family Circus-esque style later on:

I would love if Marmaduke got the Nancy treatment and got an artist who followed the tone of the first strips.

Okay, so I started from the beginning on the website (which is in 1996, so both of the Gilchrists were still on), and honestly, it's not terrible. Most of them aren't good, but they're much closer in tone to the originals, and there are some decent strips peppered about. It seems like the comic only changed to the tone of the late '00s and early '10s after Brad Gilchrist stopped writing for it.

This did get a laugh out of me:

Everything I've seen from Bushmiller's Nancy so far has been top-tier and has aged amazingly well. Honestly surprised I never knew it existed, but I'm excited to know that I have a lot to catch up on!

Olivia Jaimes' take on it has been pretty good so far, and it appears to be somewhat faithful to Bushmiller's work. It should only improve over time and I look forward to following it.

Gilchrist's run on the other hand fills me with an unfathamable anger. From the art style to the content, it's all terrible. Lord I hate it so much.

Me 3 days ago: what the fuck is a Nancy?

Me today: Olivia Jaimes perfectly transfers and modernizes the qualities that made the Ernie Bushmiller's Nancy a classic, qualities that were lost ever since Guy Gilchrist took over. Olivia Jaimes is not changing Nancy but rather bringing it back to what it once was.
also this is a very accurate post

Like many here I have never heard of Nancy until this thread popped up and now I think i might be a fan. The bot one and the video game one by the new artist crack me up each time i see them. The old ones are also fantastic as well. The ones from the previous artist probably explain why I have never heard of this comic strip. I think i have cracked a smile at one of them so far and the rest are just bad.

I spent a few minutes poking around in the archives just now, looking at random strips from the first few years of his run, and I really don't think its quality being partially due to the length of time he was doing it is the case, honestly? His jokes are bad (even the ones close to the original style are overexplained, ruining the joke) even in the 90s when he was just starting. He was already doing the music stuff and drawing her aunt like that in 1997:

The only funny part of this is that it turns out he already did the same joke 11 years before.

The best part of this thread is everyone discovering the greatness that was Bushmiller's Nancy.

I really love what I've seen of the old Nancy comics, at least. Good for the cartoonist for booting it back up, let her do what she wants.

edit: Oh wait, it's a new cartoonist. Oh well, be mad at the creator for selling the rights to someone who you don't find funny? Or don't be mad, don't you have better things to worry about?

edit2: Damn I lol'd at that last one on the post below me. I'm gonna buy a Nancy omnibus right now, funny I was just thinking about Nancy earlier today because one of my favorite Instagram's posts a lot of the strips (@bittycar, they post a lot of old animation and cartoon stuff. Worth a follow.)

If the kerfuffle surrounding Nancy has awakened you to the bizarre world of newspaper comics in the 21st century (especially newspaper comics that have been around since the Eisenhower administration), I recommend The Comics Curmudgeon, where the comics like Mary Worth, Mark Trail, Hi and Lois have been roasted for at least 10 years now.

edit: Bizarrely, he hasn't commented on the Nancy situation at all. I guess Pluggers has been keeping him plenty busy.

Doesn't he only talk about stuff by Comics Kingdom? Nancy isn't part of that so it's never come up.

I think it was because they provided the comics for the newspaper he read when he started the site.

Oh by the way... what's the source on this? I couldn't find any article or story about this, but maybe my Googling is weak because it's late.
There's no source on this... Gilchrist is getting a lot of hate here but he basically just turned the strip into a voice for his own interests (apparently the dude is a singer/songwriter and a big fan of classic music and even moved to Nashville for that).

To be fair to him, he replaced someone in the 90s who basically turned Nancy into a female Calvin from Calvin & Hobbs and back then he was actually viewed as someone taking the comic "back to the basics", but I do agree his humor ain't quite there.

Arent his first nancy strips actually made with his brother as writer though?

Also he did take it back to it basics by the end, but not the nancy basics but bushmiller's fritzi ritz basics it seems (and not as good as him).

One of his previous assistants accused him of sexual assault, among other things.

Gilchrist perfectly exemplifies the degradation of our priorities and values over the last 30 years.

Signed, the elite.

I don't have a source, hang me out to dry. I just have a good sense of smell. I could be way off base, but I seriously doubt it.

Anyhow, a couple of my posts might have been a bit incendiary and I'm the first to admit it.

I'm also super in love with out of context Nancy panels. I've been a fan of almost Bushmiller for almost 30 years but only started seeing single panels this week or so because of GIS.

Disclaimer: I don't know if the third one is Bushmiller.
