There's also this character:
001-4.jpg

No pants, but it isn't a belt skirt.
That's... Quite cute and tasteful, nice. It's good to see Yoshida is still able to draw women who aren't just sentient tighs lol... I love his art but he gets carried away sometimes.

Edit: After a quick search, it looks like he's not the artist haha. Go figure.

I'm really looking forward to Octopath, everything so far reminds me of the SNES and PSOne RPGs, which I suppose is the point!

You can actually feel the notes from Square Enix begging Akihiko Yoshida to give one of the female characters actual pants instead of a skirt that's so short is looks weird and high heels. (Though technically I guess her tunic thing functions as the weird short skirt)
I thought the artist on this one was Naoki Ikushima.

Re: legs, when I was in Japan, I saw a lot of women standing like that over the course of months. They were also very often bow-legged. We couldn't really figure out why but maybe it has something to do with high-heels? This is not my expertise, but I saw a woman literally climbing Mt Fuji in high heels. I was... surprised, to say the least.
I've read a lot of different theories as to why this is, from their unique sitting positions to being an adaptation to walking in tight kimonos to just straight up poor health as children (as bow-leggedness is supposed to naturally correct itself as children develop). Either way, it is a very distinctly Japanese phenomenon. Even other neighboring East Asian countries don't display it as much as they do. Not terribly surprising (but still kind of annoying) that it shows up in their artwork as much as it does.

Yeah. It's definitely still meant to be "cute" when done in fiction, though, I'm pretty sure. Which is, well. Something something Rei's eyepatch.
The youngest is 18? And she isn't objectified. Progress, people. :D

You're thinking of Primrose. She's a dancer and scantily clad indeed. While I think the outfit suits the character at first, considering where the story takes her, I thought it was dumb and probably out of character for her to remain dressed like that as she embarks on that journey. So yeah, the game won't fully escape from the rampant sexualization of JRPGs, but if it's just the one character, it's not too bad, for once. ._.
Yeah that's the one. She has a seductive ability or some such right? Otherwise I dunno why I'd be thinking along those lines haha.

Hah, speaking of pants... Did you all see the new characters revealed for Octopath Traveler? She's a huntress who wears, well, very snug and form-fitting clothes to say the least, and her artwork has a kind of "boobs & butt" pose.
aGHsaiq.jpg

But she has a shirt, and actual pants, and proper boots (no high heels bullshit). And she genuinely looks cool, instead of stupid. So you know what. I'll take it. Thank you, artist, for not giving her ZR and cleavage and a thong and high heels or whatever the fuck. xD
Nice, I too approve.

It's such a breath of fresh air to have a JRPG where the protagonists are more realistically aged (and clothed). Tressa is the youngest at 18, and her biography references her working for her parents' business. Primrose is 23, Olberic is 35, Alfyn is 21, Therion is 22, and H'aanit is 26.

We do actually see the characters take on different outfits depending on their sub-jobs—Olberic and Alfyn have skimpier outfits when using the Dancer job, and Primrose wears a full dress in Apothecary. Hopefully those sprite transitions are visible in the world as well as battle.

That said, I do agree that it wouldn't make much sense if Primrose remains so clad in-story, but she does say she'll need warmer clothing before going to Stillsnow at the demo's conclusion, so... hope?

Yes she does. It's actually funny to use and she might feel fanservicey, but her character is very strong in the demo. She can definitely stand her own and is written really well. This game makes me regret not having a Switch.

About the hunter, I pretty much agree. It's good for the most part. The first time I saw her back, I was thinking if she was wearing any clothes. I don't like how tight the fabric is that makes it feel as if she is naked. And the T&A pose of course. But other than that, it's good. If she is the worst in the game along with Primrose, then that would be an okay compromise depending on the other female playable characters.

If you get sub-jobs early that would be a fun way of the game encouraging you to do the thing that gets Primrose a decent set of clothes for traveling.

Octopath has a dancer character as I'm sure a lot of you know, will be interesting to see how she's handled in the narrative. The demo I played was pretty good in that regard from memory.

Yeah, I like that design as well. She looks awesome. Octopath is looking pretty damn solid based on everything I've seen of it.

I wish this would actually extend to actual options, such as GLBT characters, banana hammocks for the dudes, or a female/nonwhite character to play :P
Somehow, the options seem to start and end with "female characters in bikinis".
Gotta admit you guys make good points. Those octopath traveler characters are great. I may get a switch for it.

Belly Dancers dress like that when performing. As pretty as her outfit is (and it is, I find it pretty and tasteful), I'm pretty sure they don't when travelling around looking to
murder the pimp that sexually abused them, though...

Eh...at the two weddings I went to where there were belly dancers, I saw women dressed similarly to that. Though there definitely was more clothing. The dancing was also legitimately amazing.

Every other anime female, especially if she's supposed to be cute, is drawn pigeon toed these days. Even the female inklings from Splatoon are pigeon toed. It's an anime epidemic of bone disease.

That's because real japanese women are like that because they find it to be cute. If you go to Japan you'll see that the majority of them in the age of 14 to 40 do it. It's not an anime invention, it's a portrait of reality.

It's the darker and more cruel of the two demo stories, the girl is
13 in the beginning of the story when her life gets robbed.I like the dark tone, but i'm certainly not used to it in videogames.

I don't know the whole story, but how it looks in the demo and how they were treated
i guess they are not only simple dancers, they get hit, the boss calls for her to come to his bedroom after the show, he calls them whores at times, one dancer even gets killed before her eyes... Do we know how long she worked there? She was 13 when her family/father was murdered, after that she endured everything to find her fathers killer. She could have worked there for many years, the pimp took her from the street. so who knows whats in her head. she uses seducing as a technique throughout the game, i guess it and perhaps the clothes became part of her life and revenge and she hangs on to it until she finds the murderer.

I am aware, but it's a relatively recent trend and it''s obnoxious wherever you find it. It can mess up your legs.

Someone in the Monster Hunter team really loves thighs. Almost always the female variation of the many, many, many, if not all, armors predictably would show thighs, and occasionally, butts too.

Heck even the new layered armor for Kulve Taroth's events are victim to this. WHAT THE HELL ARE THOSE PANTS.

I don't think it's all that recent. See the link right above your post. I dunno if it's a recent trend in anime or whatever, but.

It might just be that you're more aware. I certainly never really noticed it until I actually visited the country in the late 2000s and saw it first hand. Then suddenly, whoa it's everywhere in Japanese media.

It's a very old practice that began with foot binding. It's creepy as fuck but the pigeon-toedness as a property of cute or desirable girls is believed to have sprung from this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foot_binding

Being or positioning one's feet as pigeon-toed is very bad for a variety of reasons, not the least of which are the health implications. For your own sake, do not do this to yourself, it is unhealthy and has some extreme consequences. Walk and position your legs and feet as intended; do not walk or position your feet and legs in a pigeon-toed position for long periods of time.

I'm pretty sure foot binding was just a Chinese thing that isn't done anymore, whereas the article posted earlier in the thread noted pigeon-toed is exclusively Japanese. It's likely a similar idea of what's cute, but I doubt there's a direct connection between the two.

No, it's not something that originated in Japan, I'm stating that the whole foot-fetishism thing (of which pigeon-toedness is related) is something that has a much older history and has had serious health impacts for women for a very long time, particularly in cultures that take from Chinese culture.

The pigeon-toed thing is just a new fetish that has roots in much older practices, none of which have been healthy.

If anyone is interested, Watsuki is already back. A bit expected considering that he received nothing on the jury.

I mean, I'm a strong believer in the rights of people convicted of crimes to lead lives again once they're no longer serving a sentence, but at the same time, there are tons of creators who deserve a chance to run their series in that magazine. They shouldn't be giving preferential treatment to a pedophile.

this was from a sub-story in Yakuza 5 (which at the time I had forgotten about) and the Yakuza series, while it is my favorite, has historically sexualized a lot of female characters, even if they were minor. But in this promo, the sexualization of the girl character was not the focal point at all, there were a few other promos like this for the game also, and I like that.

What about that mask? I really hate that fashion on japanese youth to use medical masks not for health stuff, but because they are damn hikkikomori...

...though this mask isnt medical one, so i can hope its just a part of whatever she tries the role of.

https://japantoday.com/category/fea...gical-masks-its-not-always-for-health-reasons

p.s.
And yeah, you probably should have explained, because that was really weird to throw a such well-mannered video here, where usually problematic examples are discussed instead.
