Wow, I guess I'm really just one of the few that just sees mediocrity in everything the game does. I mean I'm glad you guys love it so much, but I don't see it: the bland overworld, the bland quests, the bland characters, the bland story, the bland art. It's all so....middle of the road and derivative as all hell to me. Don't wanna piss on your parade or anything by being so negative, but the praise for Horizon is something that will never cease to baffle me.

Great game. Loved the combat, the machines (even though I usually hate robots), the lore and Aloy ofc. It's not perfect but damn, Guerilla absolutely killed it and I can't wait to see what an improved sequel will look like.

I enjoyed the combat, but fought with the controls a little bit. I liked the overall story, but found it delivered really piecemeal. The side quests/activities were very weak too.

Definitely looks amazing though.

Lol What? Which recent games do you not feel this is the case.

Yeah game was great. Like seeing a positive thread on it for once. Kinda blew me away when it came out. Thing is, I was a big fan of the AC games and rockstar games and for whatever reason fell out of love with em. But Horizon came by with that ubisoft-esque formula and I thought they did it better than Ubisoft has all gen. Which is wild. I think a big part of it is the world itself, traversing it and not knowing whats around the corner, where there could be a new machine to fight. RDR was another huge favorite of mine and I think the game plays pretty similarly. There's flowers to pick and you spend a lot of your time outside in nature. Just a beautiful, relaxing yet thrilling experience.

One thing open world games don't do well is the narrative side of it. John Gonzalez and team really knocked it out of the park with this one. That was probably the biggest surprise I got from the game; how engaged I was with the story and how much I wanted to know what happened next.

If that's how you feel it's understandable. There have been several blockbuster games I didnt like at all. GTA4 was probably the biggest that reviewers and fans alike went crazy over and I didnt finish it because i disliked it so much.

One good thing about this hobby is that it's so diverse anyone can find their style..

Personally I've got Horizon in my top 5 games of all time.

I loved horizon but I feel this way about certain games that are darlings here like DOOM (holy shit I've never hated a game more than I do this one. I don't enjoy a single thing about it.), GTA4 as someone else mentioned, MHW was a mess to me, etc.

Ditto but I'll state some of my complaints.

Not being able to pick my ammo sucks. Why do I have to buy a separate bow for different ammo?

Fast travel packs are kind of pointless. Maybe the devs wanted me to kill more animals but that isn't fun since they don't fight back and die in two hits.

I wish I could ride more robots. There are only 3 options so far and they're basically the same.

Why can't I buy medicinal plants when I can buy ever other plant?

Enemies are too close to the roads. When I'm just trying to go from point A to B it makes me aggro them when I just want to travel. Makes me only want to fast travel and not explore.

The automated facial animations are jarring, and this is coming from someone who's playing ME:A. It's a shame too, because the voice acting is fantastic for most characters. I understand this was to cut costs, but for emotional dialogue I can't help but want to skip through it.

Currently doing 'Frontier Justice' in Frozen Wilds, and yeah - I've hit that point where I've had enough of the janky camera and combat.

If you thought a Thunderjaw was bad (and you WILL have to kill one for a side-quest), wait till the game starts chucking multiple Demonic Frostclaws at you.

RDR was a little less clunky (to me at least) than the GTA series (but not by much), so I am hoping they learned a lot from their peers, and truly evolve on that front. Either way, I enjoyed RDR more than GTA, so I am definitely clearing my gaming schedule by then for this one.

I am super stoked to play Horizon finally as well just after GoW. It just simply looks fantastic!

Oh boy! Have fun with Horizon. The story is something stellar imo

I find GoW similarly overrated, but it's by far the better game for me.

Cool dude, thanks for posting.
My pleasure! I mean, you don't mind me posting my opinion even though it's different from most people right? You don't have to agree with my opinion; it is my own and I stand by it.

The look is striking...
Could you make some argument about the story? Why is it bland?
The game is impressive on a technical level and I'll admit to really liking the lighting (it's magic hour all the time!), but the actual graphic-style doesn't really impress me. Most AAA games like this, Uncharted, Assassin's Creed etc. have the same semi-realisic look and they're all pretty much interchangeable to me. You could almost just switch characters in every game and they woldn't feel out of place. It's just not a look I much like, it's too safe. But again, this is all just me.

I terms of the story, I can't say I remember much of it (I suppose that says it all), but I remember being annoyed at the way it was told (badly spaced out recordings) and it doesn't help that all the characters are wet blankets meaning I just didn't care about what happened to them and why.

Yeah, the combat is so fucking good. Well, except for the melee. That's the one issue with the combat. But the traps and bombs and stuff are SO FUN. It's like really hunting when you're stalking a large robot on a high level of difficulty. You have to be quiet, lay traps, stake out the enemy, and then BOOM, you get a flash of combat as you try to guide a charging T-Rex or Rockbreaker into the traps that you've set so that you can take it apart.

It's only gone up in my estimation as a game because a lot of other games in the same basic gameplay genre just fail at key things like combat, and this game excels at it and still has room to build it into something all-time great in the sequel.

I'd put this up there with Super Mario Odyssey as the examples of AAA games from this generation that are worth buying a console for.

EDIT: The story is actually fantastic, too. What came before is fun to piece together, and the newspaper clips and ads that you find are great flavor for filling that stuff in. The how things are now is actually pretty interesting and somewhat complex if you care to learn about the different tribes and how they've developed.

I think the story is very good. Loved the ending in particular. A few too many audio logs for my liking and there are a couple of other things I didn't really like, but on the whole, it's one helluva game!

Yup. The way they left it off was just perfect imo, and just so emotional. :P

Not alone really. I put 30 hours in last year and was ready to bounce off after 10...kept going for the extra 20 out of launch and hype praise trying to maintain interest, but it just wasn't engaging me.

It did look visually nice and the combat had thrills with proper mousetrap-esque weapon swapping and use. It's just the world felt like arena pockets with not enough real intrigue to see "what's out there". I rarely felt exploration was rewarding as it mostly consisted of mundane quests and combat loops to clear out the map icons.

I felt burnout in the genre mostly though. I do plan to resume my save someday and at least see it through, but never really felt the adoration that others see in it.

You're not alone. I don't hate the game by any means but I've put it down multiple times, and it's come down in my reckoning as time goes on. I really like the monster combat, particularly the tear mechanic and the traps, but then the human combat is so bad and there's enough of it to be an active annoyance. Like the worldbuilding and background, don't care much for the actual story. I'm two years late on the "tired of Ubi open world design" train but I think it took all of those tropes popping up in Horizon to really drive my distaste home. A cool Tallneck dinosaur is still a tower by another name.

However, I do disagree with you about the bland art. Really like the designs GG came up with, and there are some stunning areas, particularly the desert.

One of my GOTG for sure. Loved the story, the character, combat is sublime and the world is gorgeous!!! and lush. Not empty like so many other open world games. It just does open world better than most games out there. Never stopped playing it until i beat it.

I gotta get back into this game.. played 2 or 3 hours at launch and really enjoyed it, but got busy and dropped it. I've got it redownloaded now but letting FC5 wear off before restarting the story on this. Are there any side activities and fun things to do along with the main storyline, or is it pretty bareboned in terms of other random fun stuff to do ?

Glad you're enjoying it more than I did. I love how pretty it looks, but the combat...god, I just can't get into it. Fighting solo dinos one on one is okay (thunderjaw fights are generally fun), but later in the game when it expects you to fight multiple large machines at once, it's just sheer torture.

Probably the best photo mode game of all time, though. Incredibly good implementation of the feature, tons of options to play with, and an art design that supports it.
Don't play God of War then, if you think Horizon is hard whilst fighting multiple enemies, GoW will be literal torture for you.

Nothing like having the camera too close to the character while enemies can (and will, constantly) come in and attack you from the sides and the back! So fun. So immersive.

THIS GAME IS FUCKING amazing.

I am so angry at myself for waiting this long to play it. Granted, Breath of the Wild released the same week but still...

There's just so much that I can gush over: the combat, the environments, the enemy designs, the challenge...

GOD
IT'S
JUST
SO
GOOOOOD

I put at least 25 hours into it so far and I'm pretty sure I'm overleveled haha. I'm at level 30 and I just got to Meridian then I see that the recommended level is 12.

Let's go into detail about how amazing it is:

- The combat is amazing. I've always been a big fan of archery and this game makes it feel so satisfying. Especially love shooting an enemy's weakspot and hearing that sound when it plays.

- The game is fucking gorgeous. I never really cared for graphics but this was the first game to make me stop and actually take in the environments. And I have the peasant PS4. I can't even imagine this shit on a Pro. Don't think I can handle it.

- This game does have quite a few similarities with Breath of the Wild. The tallnecks are like the towers, the cauldrons are like the shrines. It's pretty much a western BOTW.

- This game also has the best enemy design that I've seen in a game since Bayonetta. Just look at this shit:

hzd__thunderjaw__by_xelku9-db130py.jpg

That my friends, is a thunderjaw. These fuckers are huge. Absolute unit.

- The challenge is present. I love the fast pace and the fact that the game isn't scared to kick your ass. "Oh what's that? You're busy fighting a Thunderjaw? Tough shit, here's another one for you to fight." I'm almost scared to try Ultra Hard.

The game isn't perfect of course. Totally not a fan of the way the conversations play out with the whole "single camera look." It looks like an episode of The Office. I half expect Aloy to glance at the camera whenever someone says something stupid. It just looks so lifeless.

Aloy does tend to talk alot... and I mean ALOT. Ashly Burch has a nice voice, but she talks sooo much.

A minor issue, but I hate the way they pronounce Aloy's name. You want to say "Alloy" but it's supposed to be pronounced "Ae-loy."

Also not a fan of inventory management. I'm a hoarder dammit, let me hoard.

Those flaws barely bother me when I'm getting lost in the world marveling at an ancient ruin, fighting for my life against a giant mechanical crocodile or just all around having fun in the game. The biggest surprise are the people who made it. From the damn Killzone devs. I'm just ready to go back into the world and have a hell of time. Totally going to 100% this game. Platinum and all.

I can't believe this and Zelda released in the same week, with Nier the following week and Persona the month after. 2017 was a blessed time.

IT'S JUST SO GOOOOOOD

I started this last week too and am enjoying it so much I want to focus and beat it before I pick up GOW.

I agree that the game is a bit overrated and it doesn`t excel in anything but long range combat, but i think you`re being too harsh.

The overworld has a really interesting setting and you can approach fighting in different ways. The story is pretty original for a videogame and what`s wrong with the art?

Gameplay wise the game is pretty damn good outside of melee combat.

I really liked the 32 hours I played, which disappeared when my little sister and nephew started their own save files. rofl

Seriously, my nephew usually dislikes the idea of playing games with female protagonists, but Horizon ZD quite frankly enlightened him. They really enjoyed the game.

I fucking love that this has become a meme.

Was it ever clarified what the poster meant by this? I hope it enters the dictionary soon.

Game is great.

I just get excited thinking about a sequel because there are so many areas that can be hugely improved, and I think Guerrilla has the talent to do so. We need a bigger world with more interesting things in it, more organic quest encounters, add puzzle and platforming gameplay in it to makes quests more varied and interesting, improve traversal mechanics, namely adding the ability to climb anywhere and glide.

The series has so much potential. I'm looking majorly forward to the next game!

Glad to hear it, OP. It's an awesome game. Beautiful environments, fantastic combat, incredible visuals, great enemies, smooth movement, fascinating story, and a great protagonist. I put 200+ hours in, played it twice, and it never got old.
