I saw priest live for the first time last weekend (and then they went and announced another show I'll be going to when they announced their deep purple tour) and painkiller was the only song I wanted to hear. That entire album represents my favorites parts of priest and my general heavy metal tastes.

I think halford sounds better live than dickinson too, as a huge maiden fan.

Quite honestly Priest and Halford both have done a far better job of being steady in their releases and abilities. Maiden just fell off hard around or after Fear of the Dark. Some good tunes here and there but I've actually considered selling everything after FotD where I'm considering buying the Priest discography. At no point ever do I feel like listening to Blaze Bayley and even the newer Maiden that I kind of like is just meh anyway.

Washington DC
vouch.

btw while I feel Priest vs. Maiden is one of the most natural matchups of any genre, I have always at the same time thought of them as pretty different beasts? I dunno. Priest for pure, rocking heavy metal and Maiden for mindblowing melodies and a penchant for progressiveness (also Adrian Smiff).

Priest probably has a more consistently solid discog but the highs of Iron Maiden's discography are insanely high. Like, I would take the top 10 Iron Maiden songs over the top 10 Priest songs in a heartbeat. But I would probably take the top 50 Priest songs over the top 50 Maiden songs

Having just recently gone through the Priest discography for over a month, it only strengthened my love for the band, but I will not go to bat for any of their first five albums over the first five of Maiden, and I really love Sad Wings of Destiny, Sin after Sin and Stained Glass

Yea, very true. Maidens first few albums are just amazing. I've been ripping my cd's to flac and did Maiden just this morning. I was going along thinking bad ass album, bad ass album, X Factor...shit album, Virtual X...shit album... it's kind of depressing if you run your finger along their discography at how deep of a turn it takes.

Fun fact (I may or may not have posted this before, apologies if it's a repeat):

A road trip between Montreal and Toronto lasts about the same length as all first 7 Maiden albums. True and tested.

Yo man, saying everything after Fear of the Dark is bad is just straight up incorrect. Brave New World and Dance of Death are incredible, top tier Maiden albums. And honestly, I feel like everything from AMoLaD onward is pretty damn good.

Your're right on Blaze though. No one wants to listen to that guy.

Here is a blasphemous statement,

I much prefer Bruce's solo career compared to his time in Maiden, but Seventh Son is one of my all time favorite albums, but I might rank Chemical Wedding a bit higher

I... don't know how I feel about that

On the one hand, Bruce's solo output is immensely superior to recent (as in, post-Seventh Son :P) Maiden albums. Including Brave New World and certainly everything that came after.

But better than the first seven? Nooooo

Seventh Son is also one of the greatest of all-time albums so I agree there. Chemical Wedding is good but it can't touch Seventh Son nor the other six 80's albums.

So all I can say now is: Bitnator, why xD

Nothing can touch the first 7 Iron Maiden albums in that 8 year timespan. They were pretty much invincible.
I did enjoy Brave New World, but they've gone overboard on "repeat song title x 8 " for the chorus on every song.

Since we're talking about Maiden/Priest/Bruce Dickinson, let's not forget the amazing Halford - Resurrection album.

Here's a more difficult cover question: Manowar - Blood of my Enemies vs Edge of Sanity - Blood of my Enemies?

I vote the cover. Come at me, Manobros~

Edge of Sanity version by far.

Three for Edge of Sanity

Aight, maybe it wasn't so difficult after all. :)

Manowar version for Eric Adams' vocals alone.

Not Debut or Killers era, just Bruce from Beast to Somewhere in Time, I'd rank Accident of Birth and Tyranny of Souls as better. Seventh Son and Chemical are as close to perfect as you can get

You can go hungry a few days without much problem. Call it fasting for a good cause...
2 tickets for Ozzy in a decent spot at the nearest venue would probably run me a total of $1400
Then I wouldnt be surprised if 2 tickets for Priest/Purple end up costing me in the $300 range
I dont know how much my girlfriend would appreciate us going hungry for a couple weeks for concert tickets lol

Why not settle for cheaper seats? I'd rather do that than miss out. That said, I avoid big venues. I am looking at that Priest tour tho since I've never seen them.

Itll be my first and last time seeing Ozzy so Id like to actually be able to see him. I think the only thing cheaper available is lawn. Priest is a few hours out so we'll probably also have to pay to stay the night somewhere.

I thought the Epitaph tour was Priest's last tour... who am I kidding, every band's last tour never fucking is. *eyeroll*

I might still go see this despite the price. It's a solid lineup despite the musicians being past their prime and not with their full lineups.

Lol...yea. I was trying to work up a way to mention Mercyful Fate casually but couldn't get anything funny. This reminds me, I needed to add some wishlist stuff of both MF and KD. I had some MF back in the day but I don't remember what now. The falsetto was a tough nut to crack and I'm curious if I'd be more into it now.

Melissa and Don't Break the Oath are essentials, big fan of 9 as well

King Diamond's first 5 solo albums + first 2 Mercyful Fate albums to me are the equivalent to Iron Maiden's first 7 albums. ESSENTIAL.
Abigail/Them/Conspiracy being the trifecta.

Classic King Diamond is godly. I know people love Abigail/Them/Conspiracy and I do too, but I think Voodoo and The Eye are criminally underrated too.

He's one hell of a performer, too. I wish he'd come back to Montreal soon. Or reunite with MF... :(

He is joking.

Abigail vs Don't Break the Oath?
Oof, that one is tough. Don't make me choose :( (probably DBtO, very reluctantly, but that's like in my top 5 albums of all time too...)

Abigail was my first experience with him so I'm biased but I did spin Don't Break the Oath like 4 times last week and there is no filler on it either

Regarding King Diamond

I agree

Absolutely. One of the best storytellers in music. The falsetto takes some getting used to, but once you're past that he's an incredible lyricist.

Agreed on Voodoo and The Eye, also agree with the other poster that mentioned Abigail II and The Puppet Master. I actually quite like Spider's Lullabye and Give Me Your Soul... Please too. To be honest, the only one of his albums that never really clicked with me was House of God. Graveyard gets a lot of hate and I can sort of see it, but I listened to the shit out of that album as well.

Picking between Abagail and DBtO... man. I'm going to say Abigail, with the disclaimer that I'm a big fan of concept albums and extended stories in music. DBtO is fucking amazing.

The Land
I had this epic black and white animated movie in my head of Them and Conspiracy when I was a kid, I rarely ever took my headphones off or listened to much else for probably two years or so when I was around 13 years old. I thought those movies were what I was going to do with my life, I was so into it.

And those two albums still hold up, they're just as amazing today. Not a lot of stuff from those days still holds up like that. Sepultura, Death maybe. I like some Mercyful Fate stuff and a few songs from KD's other albums, but it's really all just about Them and Conspiracy.
