Do the number of local dimming zones really mean anything without first measuring real world performance? The Sony and Samsung TV's must have better processing, brightness, motion handling, and contrast at those higher price points, no? There's no way it just comes down to brand recognition.

Is it worth it to upgrade from a 32 inch 1080p tv to a 50 inch 4k TV without HDR? I've been looking to upgrade, but the more I think about it, the more I'm unwilling to spend upwards of 800 euro on a TV, so would it be worth it to go with a 500 euro TV, or should I just wait another year or so and upgrade to something with decent HDR?

I mean obviously more zones is better than less, so all things being equal, it should have better performance than last year's models, but obviously just having more zones than a comparable Sony or Samsung doesn't directly mean it will outperform.

I wouldn't. HDR is way more impactful than more pixels imho.

If you're buying a new set, I would absolutely be looking for something that falls in your price range with HDR. In your case, hold out a bit longer if you can and get something decent.

You can actually set it to just HDR 4K60hz too, if you want the menus to have a little more pop/be shown in HDR.

(i literally just went through this exact scenario last night).

Also, experience so far isn't too bad. haven't played around with much; Netflix works fine. The Apple movie trailers app is horrendous. There's clearly a black level/color space mismatch happening, as all the black bars for trailers are super light grey. Seems like a huge oversight for one of Apple's own apps.

Voice search is very handy.

Hmm I'll have to try HDR but I think SD menus are bright enough haha.

Not a fan of the touch remote but I use a Harmony remote anyway which is more convenient. I got it for mostly 4k movies that might not be available on my vudu, but it turns out pretty much all of them are lol. Don't need this at all! But it's still nice

I have just spent 6 weeks waiting to get a new TV holding out for the TCL 6-series, and now I'm reading online that orders opened at 8am, some people have delivery estimates of the 28th - some mid may, and now amazon is not taking orders anymore...
Am I seriously going to have to wait until June to get a new TV because they have sold out of an entire months worth of stock already?
I have never bought a TV 'at launch' before but this is a shambles if there are no more of them after 4 hours on sale.

Are you in the US? Is Amazon the only retailer carrying them?

the same thing happened last year with amazon. stock should get better after a couple of weeks. also unless you absolutely need to have amazon try best buy. it wasn't very hard to get there once they started getting their stock. although return policy is slightly worse (15 days for non-elite customers).

Yeah, I wouldn't do that. Not all (most) apps and games don't send the correct signal to change from HDR back to SDR so you'll be stuck in the HDR mode (like DirectTV Now for my tv watching).

The touch remote is handy for the better video scrubbing, and occasional voice control. Other than that I use my Harmony remote as well.

This was pretty much my exact justification for getting one too =)

I plan to stream some FLAC music with it, but other than that, the directv deal was cheap enough to pick one up just as a "try it out" kinda thing
Oh I forgot I really like the airplay function. It's so easy to use. Show my entire phone on it and then send any video content to be played full screen on the tv. It's so seamless and works perfect. It's pretty damn impressive for porn, I'm just saying.

Wait so u think just keep it on DV? I didn't know apps and games even used HDR. But I only use it to watch movies so that shouldn't be an issue for me.

I asked this before but lost the link, what is the recommended settings for HDR and DV on OLED?

Best buy only put the 65" up for sale an hour or so ago, and the delivery estimate has already slipped on that to the 18th. 55" isn't listed yet.
I hope you're right and this is just their initial delivery which is selling out.

Not too fixed on amazon, but did have $200 credit there. I can spend that on something else.

I would keep the ATV to 4K SDR.
Let HDR video send the appropriate signal to make the change.

If you keep it on 4K HDR, you'll just get a faux SDR conversion. Many apps won't actually change to true SDR range.

Ooh ok yea I did that yesterday. I much prefer it

I like how the movies on this thing loads a menu first. It feels like I'm watching a bluray

New Q9FN review:

Confirms what every other review has said: Samsung has outdone itself this year. Impressive considering last year's QLED models were mediocre at best.

I haven't watched any reviews, are they better than OLED?

He said it was the most impressive TV he's reviewed or something like that.

Amazing in both brightness and black levels.

Could not tell a difference between OLED and this TV in black levels until he got close to the Samsung and it fell just short of an OLED but otherwise said blacks were jet black, with great shadow detail.

Said peak brightness is top notch, Samsung rated at 2k nits which would be the highest of any Tv, but he actually measured it at closer to 2.5k.

Back lit not edge lit.

Something like 500 dimming zones and new algorithm, resulting in no noticeable halo-ing or very very very little if you try to look for it. He said it wasn't an issue.

Top notch color saturation

Basically said it's the mostly versatile TV (gaming, movies, sports, etc) in any viewig condition.

Samsung already had great game mode input lag but improved it on this year's models. He measured game mode at 16ms.

Said he had no complaints about the motion resolution, but was just ok nothing spetacular.

Viewing angles much improved.

Doesn't like the processing box, bigger than an Xbox One S, same amount of inputs as before.

Hope that helps
