gosublime told me to come on down to SoulsERA so here I am. For now I'mma just watch the thread since I probably don't have much to add.

... Is the post what landed me here. Like I told gosu, I dunno when I'll start BB (I'm currently in backlog hell lol) but when I do, I hope you guys can help me through the transition from defensive player to whatever BB is gonna require.

Welcome - hope we can help!

Most recent boss fight...probably should've kept the torch out though. Now I'm dealing with Iron Keep, it's a bit annoying though. Archers are tanky as fuck, having a +10 Uchigatana helps in this area though, on top of magic weapon. I need more lightning spears though...3 uses just ain't enough. And yeah...this fucking area is built for bow use.

I made it through Giant, Dragonknight guy, the thing in the boat, and the Pursuer--and then his mini-me in Bastille. Game definitely gets better as you go. Pursuer was a pain until I realized he was a glorified Gundyr--just roll right and avoid 90% of his damage.

I could see the Lifegems being a contentious addition to the game, but I think they're a solid addition--they take about as long as a flask and are much slower to recover HP so they aren't incredibly practical.

Iron Keep is one of my favourite areas in the game, and you definitely don't need a bow for it.
If you're planning on playing the multiplayer you should get used to it, because 90% of DS2 multiplayer takes place there, be it PvE or PvP.

I consider the Pursuer to be a little bit of a damage check, he's not supposed to be your second boss in my opinion. I think I had like a +2 or 3 weapon the last time I dealt with him and more points in AGL. Also yes knowing how to better dodge his attacks help.

For me it helps I guess. I'd rather snipe them than run at them and aggroing more shit in the process.

Well when you do get around to BB I would recommend Saw Cleaver and later on Ludwig's Holy Blade if you are looking for a easier experience IMO. Saw cleaver does extra damage to beasts and Holy Blade staggers about enemies pretty well, plus it's a giant sword with a smaller sword in it which is awesome. When you play make sure to do the DLC which is amazing and has a bunch of fun weapons like the Pizza cutter.

I was trying to dodge back a lot and it almost always resulted in me taking 1-2 hits every combo, once you learn to dodge his attacks he's kind of a joke. I had a Longsword +3 and it wasn't too long of a fight. I did him fourth and it was manageable, especially with the Chloranthy Ring.

I think rolling in and circle strafing a little helps I think. That's a fight I never bothered to record, but he went down simple enough. Knowing to not be close when his sword turns blue helps as well. Anybody here use the Chaos Rapier? I have it, but don't know if I should sink Twinkling Titanite into it. Also what are the best hexes?

I will for sure! Actually managed to snag the DLC on one of it's many sales recently.

I played previous Souls game pretty much the same way as you, the Saw Cleaver is a good starting weapon if you like basic straight sword type weapon from Dark Souls.
Don't forget to use your gun, parrying in this game is way easier since you can do it from a far away and safe distance from the enemy. I rarely parried in previous Souls games but I became pretty good in Bloodborne.

For playing differently it's probably going to come naturally. The starting area is built to learn you to play more aggressively, there's plenty of enemies gathered in groups to force you to act and react fast.
It may be because I played all Souls games prior to this one but I always felt like the beginning of Bloodborne was specifically built for previous Demon's/Dark Souls players like me that turtle their way behind a shield and to tell them: This is not gonna work, you need to play more fast and aggressively. For that reason the beginning was pretty hard, I hit a wall at first but after that wall was passed damn it was good.

All in all it still is a souls game like the previous ones in its DNA so it's not THAT different.

I haven't jumped into BB yet, but I can say the intro area for DS2 held your hand way more than I expected, and DS3 was way harder than I expected. Kind of pumped to start BB, but I just dumped 7 hours into DS2, and still have to clear like 4-5 bosses in DS3, so it's going to be a while T_T

Also what are the best hexes?

You can easily beat the game with dark orb.

Dark Weapon: Good for buffing your weapon with dark and most enemies are weak to dark.
Resonant Soul: Cast a dark orb at the cost of 100 souls. Probably the best damage dealing ranged spell.
Great Resonant Soul: Casts a dark orb at the cost of 500 souls. This spell used to be so op at launch. I believe it was nerfed so that it doesn't one shot bosses anymore and yes it did one shot bosses.
Climax: Casts a dark orb that uses all off your souls up to 5000 souls. This spell can still one shot bosses iirc but you lose a ton of your souls in the process.
Resonant Weapon: buffs weapon with dark for the price of 2000 souls. Was op at launch. Everyone used this thing to just melt through bosses because most bosses in the base game were really weak to dark. Nowadays dark weapon is probably better but this is still good

Note: For Resonant Soul, Great Resonant Soul, Climax, and Resonant Weapon you need a Sacred Chime. Caitha's Chime with dark infusion is the best chime for hexes. I haven't played with any of the dlc spells so I have no idea if those are any good but they seem to all have insanely high requirements so probably not worth it. Maybe Dark Greatsword since its basically an aoe spell but again haven't tried it.

Holy shit. I think I actually bought dark weapon, I need to double check though. Sounds like I should shelve magic weapon for that.

Hello all. Never posted in a community thread and don't post much in general, but Dark Souls games have been my go-to games since 2013. Nothing else seems to come close. I sure hope they make more, even though the formula might be getting stale.

If I were to pick a favorite, I think secretly it would be Dark Souls II. Just the variety and all that jazz. I also streamed myself playing that game with viewers, going all the way to NG+7. I quit streaming soon after that, but I never stopped playing Dark Souls.

Always hated that boss. Super annoying with all the little spiders. Fire is your friend. Nuke them from orbit!

Dark Souls is great. I used to hate DS2, but this play through I've been able to appreciate it a lot more.

This might be how I roll. Do I really need more than 16 int and 22 faith though? There are a lot of builds in this game.
I can't recall this detail. If I get a chance I should log in and see how I left that char. IIRC, (I probably don't) you can re-roll 10 times or so on a single char, so its pretty easy to try things out.

Ok. Though I really have no idea what I'd change right now. I have good agl, decent dex at I think 24 or something, maybe less in vit or something because I'm mostly just in lighter armor like the black leather set. Though I hope I find some new baller ass light armor though. I've only liked the Wanderer set and Black Leather set so far...Rogue set was just not good to me.

Does Nioh's dodge have iframes or is it more about distance and positioning in this game?

it has i-frames, but less than Souls. I think the i-frames are at the start of the animation and not in the middle like Souls, but I'm not sure 100%, been a while since I played Nioh.

I am getting wrecked by Heide Knights in Heides Flame Tower. They have incredibly erratic move sets...
I hate those things, there's no consistency to what they do. After defeating Old Dragonslayer I haven't stepped in there again. I at least dealt with them enough to get their fab sword.

Fashion Souls in 1 is as good as the others IMO. 2 is where it introduced a lot of different armors and outfits to make cool fashion souls.
2 had the best fashion souls. I actually find 3's a bit lacking because the Knight's armour is better than anything and how they messed up some of the older armours like being able to see your neck in Faraam's.

I tought 2 was pretty weak for fashion even with dlc having some cool armors. I never really did that much fashion souls in the first one because I never go above 25%.

BB tho... that was a different and good looking type of beast

I took out Dragonrider and now can't get to Old Dragonslayer. Between the Old Knights and Heide Knights it's a huge pain in the ass--but not bad for farming Souls. I just said screw it and went to check out the 3 places I've unlocked and need to head through.

Yeah just deal with it later. Just make sure when you come back you have a strong enough bow to distance kill that dragon.

I didn't go too crazy with fashionsouls in bloodborne, but what they gave you looked great though. I'm always a female so having the Cainhurst set and the red one with a nice dress were top notch. I need to play that shit again.

Quoting myself from earlier in the thread:

I've only played Dark Souls (years ago) but never finished it. Started a new game this week and just made it to the Bell Gargoyles. Wish me luck!

I did it!

I'm so glad I decided to pick it up again. What a ride! One of the best things about DaS is how different the weapons feel. My main was the Mace and I was happy with it but I found so much stuff I wanted to try! Before the final boss the Black Knight Halberd dropped and it made me really excited for a NG+ run.

DSII DLC content:

Okay, this was a pretty interesting piece of DLC, especially in that it probably took me 10+ hours to complete, drove me to stall it for months at one point, and then hooked me back in for the last 5 days or so. I've clocked over 80 hours and I believe I'm done with the main game (activated all bonfires, killed all bosses). I'm playing on a 2012 laptop, but the performance is still >40fps in most areas at 720p, which feels really nice (got 60 on DS1, can't even play DSIII over 30fps).

Shulva is a pretty great area all around. The design, the triangular prism switches and the elevators, the architecture- it's really nice and memorable. The enemy knights are kind of meh, and I don't like the bugs. But oh well.

I fucking hate the Dragon Sanctum. The beginning area is a death trap until you clear it over and over and over, and the rest is just a mess. I hated the spiky room, I hated the traversal, I hated the Lair of the Imperfect, all of it. Though, admittedly, it got interesting after clearing the Sanctum, getting the Sanctum Key, and finding the third Shulva bonfire. The latter half, the descent into Dragon's Rest, was pretty great. Got invaded there by someone, tried to rain arrows on them, but I accidentally fell down and died, hahaha.

The Cave of the Dead is FUCKING ABSOLUTE SHITE. Of all the areas they could have recycled, I'm really baffled that they chose THE BLACK GULCH, literally the most frustrating, maddening and annoying area of the entire game. At least The Rotten took only 5-6 tries, the Graverobbers took me more than 40 tries (and Havel's outfit didn't deserve to be brought back that way). It felt satisfying to defeat them, but I hated the design.

Elena was the highest point of the DLC for me. Fun fight, interesting design, the lead-up to her is great. Took 10-15 tries or so. Downed Sinh on the first try, and besides the arena, that fight was really underwhelming.

On to the Brume Tower- from what I've seen of it, it is fucking amazing. Same goes for Frozen Eleum Loyce.

As divided as I was on the base game, I think the DLCs for II are legitimately some of the highest points in the series. Sinh alone was one of the absolute best bosses in the series IMO, and the other DLCs have some contenders as well.

Personally, while it was decent, I'm not really feeling that anything (maaybe except Majula and maaaaaaaybe Castle Drangleic in the base game) neared DS1's levels of atmosphere and immersion. I have bigger hopes for the other DLC packs, they seem far more interesting, but I'm not expecting anything to rival my experience with DS1.

The bosses are fun but the large groups of high poise enemies are a slog to get through. In my recent playthrough of Scholar I really enjoyed the main game but found my patience wore thin pretty quickly when I entered the DLC areas.

I think the DLCs are where the "ROM hack-y" nature of DSII shines the most. Each one has some great gameplay mechanics that often require a level of player ingenuity I can't remember seeing elsewhere in the series:
The elevating platforms, wall-switches, and phantom enemies tied to their corpses in Crown of the Sunken King, the bomb enemies and related puzzles to manipulate them into blowing up enemy mobs in Crown of the Iron King, the entirely optional retread through Non-Frozen Eleum Loyce to collect the Loyce knights in Crown of the Ivory King, etc.
The mobs are a pain, but then again all the mobs in DSII are a pain. I also played through Vanilla DSII on PS3 so it's entirely possible the enemy behavior and placement of Scholar alleviated issues in the base game that the DLC still had. I dunno. I'll probably replay it via Scholar at some point to compare.

I really wish Bed of Chaos wasn't part of the mega souls, I hate that fight so much, probably the only boss fight in the entire first game I really despise.

Miyazaki must have hated life when he designed that.
