Some idiot law professor from Georgetown, whole talking about the discrimination of housing between black and white Americans- starts talking about the "Chinese wall" between the two communities.

Yes, that's a business term, but it's an outdated, culturally insensitive (dare I say racist) term.

No awareness whatsoever. I'm so fucking tired of this. On NPR of all channels.

Saw Sunday Beauty Queens this weekend. It's a documentary about pinay domestic workers in Hong Kong. Kinda sad, infuriating, and definitely worth a watch.

it's pretty prevalent in law tbh (it comes up a lot in ethics courses on how a law firm should operate)

i'll be honest and say i completely didn't really notice it during my studies

From the trailer I get the feeling it was made by Asian people for Asian people.

Outside of that though, really not the sort of movie I'd watch.

How did you guys like Ugly Delicious? I finally made my way through it on my backlog, and I find myself loving all of the guests and Chang's Asian friends. Because Dave's a jabroni, lol.

As a person that hates the gentrification of food, I didn't like the central theme of series that much.

I know from his point of view an a restaurant owner and chef its great to charge 20 dollars for 6 soup buns but as a consumer I rather be paying 5 dollars.

But then I also don't find his food that impressive, Its a little better than the hole in the walls from Flushing but not that much better to pay that price.

Well the hilarious thing is in the dumpling episode Ali Wong addressed that very thing, basically saying "well yeah Dave but your customers are dumb bourgey white folks who don't know the value of a dollar."

And she's right :P

Gentrification of ethnic cuisine is really just a marker of making it into the mainstream.

Of course it's not great to pay 4x more for arguably worse--or at least less authentic--food, but wide acceptance is kind of how culture is accepted and assimilated from the opposite side.

I don't think that ever totally crowds out the truly authentic stuff because they serve different audiences.

OG Taipei was so disappointing.

But DTF is delicious. I don't care if it's expensive- it's the best xiao long bao I've ever had stateside.

Met one of the guys who tells the Manager that I'm the "Chinese dude with glasses..."

The man is Asian himself.

I think he needs glasses.

An Indian dude said Indians are proud when white people and foreigners don traditional garb...

I'd there an Indian version of Uncle Chan?

Perfect way to start Monday.

edit: The posts that say a traditional Chinese dress isn't part of a Chinese dude's culture are especially vapid.

That thread about the prom dress is such garbage, fuck me. How are people so obtuse?
Because they're white and some of them have Asian girlfriends/wives, taught English in Asia, like anime.

Honestly, cultural appropriation outside of Native American and African American culture is the only issue where I can really see where both sides are coming from. By both sides I'm talking about diaspora and native land, though. Other parties can fuck off for all I care.

The dress on its own is questionable, but juxtaposed against the poses? Nah fuck that mess. Shit is racist period. Doesn't matter if it's from some youtube meme if the origin of that meme has a racist origin.

People in that thread are doing triple backfilps to try and justify it.

It's not just about giving the girl the benefit of the doubt, it's that it's inconceivable that there could be any racism in the situation at all. Of course, the twitter guy being an idiot doesn't help.

Yeah I honestly don't give a shit what people want to wear but when they're making poses like that I don't think they get the benefit of the doubt.

A lot of the posts in that thread are worse than anything she did. It's an easy target for the cultural appropriation denial crowd.

There's never going to be a perfect messenger, so I'm going to give the guy a pass. Not saying his vernacular isn't problematic of course.

Cultural appropriation is always going to be a fuzzy thing, and is dependent on a lot of situational factors. Clothing, hairstyle, and makeup are good examples of this.

Having said that, a lot of Indic cultural stuff has been so blatantly appropriated to the point that it is harmful.

Honestly, we need to start reporting posts. If the bans come, it'll send a message. I'm on mobile most of the time, so I can't report a billion posts...lolz

I remember as a kid passing by a shop in Chinatown when a bunch of white tourists decked out in silken Chinese wear did the whole prayer hand clasp thing and bowed to a shopkeep.

I was laughing because the whole thing made about as much sense as an Asian guy wearing yarmukle making the sign of the cross in lieu of a handshake.

I honestly don't have a problem with people wearing a qipao, but some of the posts in that thread are pretty shitty.
This is where I'm at. I guarantee that the prevailing attitude in that would be different if the girl was wearing indigenous clothing or a dress from some other culture, and the double standard is the part that makes me the angriest.

This is a racist forum and it's disgusting.
