Anyone know anything about Necros Christos doing anything new?

This live version of Black Mass Desecration remains the peak of death metal that I've heard. Their brand of DM is exactly what I like.

Necros Christos are great, they really are, but I would like to know what you feel is so unique about them. They are basically another occult-aesthetic band that came from the school of Incantation and they use a ton of interludes. By the way they have a new album coming out next month on Sepulchral Voice.

The vox are perfect. He just gets it exactly right for that cavernous occult DM sound. He gives the music personality, and even though there is tons of more talented and impressive DM out there, personality is a rare quantity in the genre. The material and riffs are solid and usually pretty catchy, and it's not technical or noisy. It's fun to listen to. There's not too much doom. They have a sense of kind of playing to the genre in a way that's just a little tongue in cheek, even though they are a serious band.

That's huge news that there's a new one coming, it feels like forever. Nine Graves was short and wasn't even all new songs, and as you said, the interludes...

that's cool, and I can see what you're saying. The lengths to which they take their image probably speaks to the tongue in cheek thing a little bit. I specifically recognize them for their relatively noise-free take on this music and I can appreciate that. Apparently the new one will be a 3CD, so even with the interludes I'm sure there will be lots of nice content. I was not expecting it at all and I'm glad it's so close.

so I didn't think I'd be stoked for a kevin hufnagel solo release, but here I am.
I'm a huge fan of dysrhythmia and vaura, and I enjoyed his playing in gorguts, but his solo releases are typically ambient synth which I'm admittedly not a fan of. on a whim I checked out the track for his upcoming cd, and instantly preordered the vinyl

no drums or bass, just a straight up layered guitar album

Cool, I didn't realize he was releasing something new. I'll keep it on my radar.

A song popped up on my Pandora that I can't really find anywhere on the net. I think the band is Psychopathic Daze and the song is My Black Dahlia. I enjoyed it though mostly the woman's parts. Still enjoyed it.

Destruction is awesome! I've listened to a lot of their material over the years but don't own any of it yet. Been thinking I need to start buying their discography and fix that. May do a Kreator, Sodom and Destruction order in the near future.

Hell yeah! Definitely start building up that discography, you won't regret it! I think you'll enjoy my next pick:

Song of the Day:

Sodom - Baptism of Fire

And more thrash hit the shelves today. Never heard of Blood Tsunami but this album rips. First band I thought of was Slayer and their Undisputed Attitude release. It's got some hardcore vibes with Araya style vox and a bit of a Slayer guitar tone but then instead of their signature solos of chaos, the solos here are more traditional thrashy type things. I wouldn't compare this band to Slayer though like you would a Hellbringer or My Regime that are clones. The Slayer reference is more of an example of sound rather than a direct comparison. Anyway, this is pretty bad ass.

20 years ago the mighty Blind Guardian released "Nightfall in Middle Earth", one of the best power metal albums of all time.
In honour of that:

Song of the Day:

But if you haven't yet, you should really listen to the whole album. Then again, if you already have, do it again.

Invisible Oranges also did a write-up on it: "Perfection in Alignment: 20 Years of Blind Guardian's 'Nightfall in Middle Earth'"

That is the album that introduced me to Blind Guardian in the first place (I think I bought the CD of it in 2001 or 2002).

Sooooo good.

While I'm thinking about it, I think this trip to Exclusive Company (the music store I typically buy physical music from if I'm actually going out to a store to look at buying music), I also purchased V: The New Mythology Suite from Symphony X, which was both my first introduction to that band and an album I really adore.

what is the weirdest metal album you know? Or most unique?

In terms of uniqueness, I'd probably put Genetic Error up there. Progressive Crossover, an oxymoron but they make it work.

One of the best albums put out this year so far. Great mesh of funeral doom and black metal.

Arjen Anthony Lucassen's Star One, is definitely one of those oddball projects with songs inspired by scifi movies/games and an impressive cast of musicians. The second album features references to dystopian movies, both records are a great listen if you're into that semi-80's vibe.

This album fucking rules. Hadn't listed to in forever until today.

Also, the new Skeletal Remains album is some pretty solid old school, Florida sounding death metal. They nail the production.

Song of the Day

Been toying with the idea of having a theme for the songs of the day like a week of space related tunes and since yesterdays tune was along those lines, I thought this might be a good continuation. I loved this album from a couple years ago and this tune really takes me back to going to see the eclipse we had not long ago. So today's tune is Soular Eclipse from Mightiest.

Fucking hell

Edit: speaking of time and Candlemass, how is their last album from 2012, goddammit? Where is the time going??

...Also I thought Candlemass was done, didn't even know they were making new albums... >_>

Defeated Sanity 12" collection. Lille Gruber is a first ballot death metal hall of famer. Exemplary brutality and class since its inception. Bonus rec, killer German BDM with Lille on session drums:

Abhorrent Castigation (DEU) - Throne of Existential Abandonment
nice :)
I can't wait to see them in 19 days with behold... the arctopus (one of my favorites of all time). taking a road trip for that mini east coast tour. I wish they'd play a few from dharmata though

Saw these guys about 11 years ago -- Still remember it like it was yesterday. Fantastic band.
skullgrid era! prime time to see them. I'm sure you got to catch them with zeleny on drums too. I missed their tour in 2007 on skullgrid (though now that I think about it I think the show I missed in Chicago was 2009?), but caught them in 2013 in chicago with weasel walter (flying luttenbachers) and it was still primo. apparently on this mini tour they're playing material from all eras. which is great because I only saw them play horrorscension content last time.

oh yeah song of the day. I'll just call it Stoned Then Defiled, on the subject of Defeated Sanity. Psalms of the Moribund was my first, and still my favorite along with Chapters of Repugnance.

Since getting back into metal I've been trying to revisit some gateway bands that I skipped and 'forgotten' albums from big bands to see if I've become more enlightened in my tastes over the past 15 years. Right now I'm making my way through mid-era BATHORY and KING DIAMOND, the latter of which is my favorite band of all time. Everything up to THE EYE and starting again from THE PUPPET MASTER is fantastic, but I'm listening to stuff like ABIAIL II for the first time and I just hate the sounds on this album. The tone of the guitar, the tone of the bass drum, all of it seems generic (discounting the songwriting and musicianship). I know ABIGAIL II in particular is a very highly regarded mid-era KING DIAMOND album, so maybe I'll get into it in another 15 years.

While I'm here, I did some traveling over the past week and spent a lot of that time listening to one of my favorite albums for the first time in years so I wanted to share it:

VISCERAL EVISCERATION (Austraia) - INCESSANT DESIRE FOR PALATABLE FLESH (1994)

This sounds nothing like how you might expect it to sound after reading the band name, seeing the cover art--really everything about it defies expectations. The songwriting might not be incredibly intricate or well done, but I find the album infinitely interesting, particularly the vocals. Like the way the dude says "he consumed the undertaker's regurgitations" or the female vocalist wails "an exquisite supper of excrements" near the end of the song I linked above. Even the way they pronounce the words is intriguing to me. It's pretty cool.

So I just found the band Annihilator... Which is weird that I had never heard about them before especially since they are pratically locals (I'm in Montreal and they are from Ottawa). I'm slowly going through their discography but I've had Alison Hell on loop for a couple of days now.

I love that song so much. I think part of why I love it is because of how all over the place both the guitars and the singer are!
