Song of the Day:

Hello. My name is Cactus and I'm in charge of Wednesday's song of the day. I'll be sticking to to Stoner/Sludge/Doom, so get ready for some catchy grooves and a tonne of bass.

Today's song is from a band that most of you should be familiar with: Electric Wizard. They've been a mainstay in the doom scene for almost 25 years, and have a new album coming out this month. Please join me in entering their smoky haze of horror worship and drug-fueled misanthropy.

With Come My Fanatics... turning 20 this year, let's revisit that album's opening track, RETURN TRIP. Volume up, please.

This is definitely some heavy, heavy fuzz. Now that I can listen at home on a decent set of speakers I can dig this. Nice mellow tune to wrap up a long day of work. I gave the album a shot and it was good up to a point but then it got all noise and I lost interest. Good tune though.

Glad you like it. It's even better live!

Song of the Day:

Hello Metal Era! My tastes tend to gravitate more toward Black Metal, especially this time of year, so that will probably make up the majority of my SotD posts. Hope we can get some genre diversity in the postings so there is something for everyone.

For the first SotD, I'm going to go with Sargeist - From the Black Coffin Lair from the album Let the Devil In

I always felt Sargeist were criminally underrated in black metal. They have such a great ear for melody, especially on the later albums. There are some awesome mid paced riffs on this song and this whole album is just a masterclass in melodic but intense black metal. I think fans of Mgla can find a lot to like in Sargeist. If you are into this I suggest this album Let the Devil In and their newest, Feeding the Crawling Shadows.

way late, but totally vouch. Finnish black metal as a whole has consistently been the most traditional of all the major scenes and Sargeist is a personal favorite. I would take the first two over the last two, but that's just my production preference showing. Musically, the last two are still fantastic. Great band, great rec.

this really doesn't fit the metal bill for me...
check out some real female metal like MYRKUR, SALOME, Arch Enemy, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, or Windhand

It might not be what you listen to, but it is metal, and I like it. I like Myrkur too, and it's definitely not thrash. Will check out the others today.

Glad to see everyone chipping in with female fronted groups! I have a wide range of things I like, and most of what I listen to nowadays has main male vocalists, but I started out with European girl metal and it will always have a place in my heart.

Definitely have some new playlists for this evening <3

This place is coming along great so far, thanks lordxar for creating it, was the best community at gaf and it transitioned amazingly well, just need the last of the stragglers to join in now.

Blasting Aria currently, one of my all time favorite bands. What are some of you favorite Russian metal bands? Would love some recommendations, I am always digging for stuff from Russia

Terra Urosoum or something like that. Was linked on the old neogaf metal thread a year or so ago. Immediate purchase once I heard it.

What an awesome pick! That fuzz is such an iconic tone. Feels like it vibrates in every fiber of your body and you can't really argue with those riffs either. I'll have to admit that I haven't listened to Electric Wizard much beyond Dopethrone occasionally, but this makes me want to listen to more of their other stuff. Looking forward to more of your picks.:p

Ok, Valkyr is up tomorrow. Was at work and didn't really get a chance to finish this correctly. I've also added this to the OT.

blahness - Monday
Valkyr - Tuesday
Cactus - Wednesday
Quikies83 - Thursday
IngwerOrang - Friday
m_dorian - Saturday
Lordxar - Sunday

This song of the day is a great idea, so much music to be discovered. I realize all the dates are taken and I probably wouldn't be able to keep up with a recurring day anyway, but I can fill in at times if need be. Just give me a heads up if any of you can't make a date.

What draws you into metal?
power, beauty, angularity.

Favorite genre(s)
black metal, death metal, heavy/power/thrash/speed metal.

Favorite band(s)
Order from Chaos (MO)
Arizmenda (CA)
Volahn (CA)
Yellow Eyes (NY)

First album(s) (what got you into the music?)
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, V-Rock.

New favorite album(s)
Arizmenda (CA) - Stillbirth in the Temple of Venus
Volahn (CA) - Aq'Ab'Al
Yellow Eyes (NY) - Immersion Trench Reverie

Best concert
Ares Kingdom (MO) and Abigail (JPN) in one night.

Favorite instrument and why?
can't decide between drums and guitar. Good guitars/riffs is the basis of any good metal album. A strong drum performance can take an album to another level.

What don't you like about this music?
can't think of anything.

Do you play an instrument?
drums and guitar.

I 've got many Black Sabbath vibes from these guys, they are a new group for me so thanks. This song was too slow though.

There's KYPCK.

Not really a Russian band but Finnish instead (man I'm posting a lot of Finn-stuff lately, bear with me folks:p) but the lyrics are in Russian. I guess we have that cold, depressing winter in common with our neighbors to the east, so dark, heavy and moody are the key here. On the lighter side, they've also made a pretty kick ass cover of T.A.T.U's All About Us.

Man, i'm not being notified about the threads i'm watching, it's being hard to keep up =(
I found out that the notifications weren't working 100%, so I just started looking at "Watched Threads" instead. The little purple circle to the left of the thread name will let you know if there are new posts.

I wanted to pick a song that is pretty digestible for everyone. This is a band a few of you should know but I'll gladly introduce to the rest of you: Draconian.
Draconian are a Swedish Doom/Gothic band that utilize both female and male (harsh) vocals -- nothing new here but wait until you hear Heike Langhans vocals... mmmm.
They've been around for some time now and a few members have other similar projects that I'll touch on in later weeks. But for now, enjoy Draconian "Stellar Tombs"

Thanks! Come My Fanatics and Dopethrone are their best albums. Their best album post-lineup change is probably Witchcult Today, so I'd give that one a listen if you like the band.

Interesting video, and surprisingly melodic song. Never heard of Draconian before, so this was pretty cool.

One of my fav bands. I think i posted about this when i voted one of the best albums two years ago on Gaf. I hated when Lisa left and i was really mad and took their new album for granted, but after listening to Heike sing i was totally in love, she is already one of my favourite metal singers, lovely voice.
Great recommendation.

What draws you into metal?
The fact that the emotion captured in the complexities of the music and vocals can be so wide ranging that there this is something for every mood. Oh and heavy fucking guitar riffs.

Favorite genre(s)
Death Metal, Doom/Stoner Doom, Grindcore, Black Metal, Thrash, Heavy Metal

Favorite band(s)
Autopsy
Nasum
Neurosis
Yob
Baroness

First album(s) (what got you into the music?)
Went from hair metal to standard heavy metal to more extremes. This is sort of the progression:
Guns N Roses - Appetite for Destruction
Motley Crue - Girls, Girls, Girls
Skid Row - S/T
Metallilca - And Justice For All
Anthrax - State of Euphoria
Slayer - Decade of Aggression
Opeth - Still Life
Windir - 1184

New favorite album(s)
I've already posted a fair bit of what I have enjoyed this year in these two posts:
This year #1
This year #2
Here is some of my favorites in the past few years:
Oranssi Pazuzu - Värähtelijä
Cadaveric Fumes - Dimensions Obscure
YOB - Clearing The Path To Ascend
Inter Arma - The Cavern
Blood Incantation - Starspawn

Best concert
The whole of Maryland Deathfest 2012. I do not think they will ever surpass that lineup and the setup was perfect and the last year it felt small enough to be intimate for the scale of the fest. It was one of the best weekends of my life and I was on a high for weeks afterward.
gzBN38e.jpg

Some of links to the live sets from that weekend:
Church of Misery
Agalloch
Noothgrush
Nasum
Electric Wizard
Dragged into Sunlight
YOB

Favorite instrument and why?
Guitar, its the heart of this music. Second would be vocals. The variety of emotion that can be expressed in this genre is often unique because of the vocals. The grimier the better though for me!

What don't you like about this music?
Elitism, some of the sketchy people some of the scenes draw in

Do you play an instrument?
Nope

I was a bit worried myself after Lisa left -- but that was washed away when I first heard Heike. Glad you guys enjoy.
