IMO: kill the Lightning port on the iPhone, move entirely to wireless charging and accessories, and change the iPad to USB-C.

That seems like the correct and inevitable path forward for both product lines.

I agree with this.

Not necessarily that the iPhone is going to go wireless only or needs to, but the iPad has to go USB-C. At least the Pro does. I consider that inevitable

What? Heck no!
I don't want to change battery every year because of wireless charging.

I've been purely wirelessly charging my iPhone X since November 3rd and according to this fancy new battery health indicator it's still at 100%

iPhone-wise, that seems like the worst idea ever, both from a convenience and a efficiency point of view.

It literally destroys tons of use cases, because wireless charging can't replace cable charging no matter how much it catches up in charging speed, until you can use your phone (on your hands, not on a table) while it's being charged, like you can with a cable.

It's not going to happen, but it would make me change phones 100%. Unless we're talking about the "the whole room is a wireless charger" future.

I really like being able to plug my iPhone and iPad into my Mac to back it up locally. WiFi backup is much worse. And I don't want to use iCloud backup for two phones and three iPads.

Also charging your phone in the car is still a really important use case that wireless charging is not ready for.

Yeah. I have no doubt eventually Apple is going to move everything wireless, but there's still too many pitfalls for inductive charging for it to happen, and Li-On batteries haven't made a big leap in capacity or longevity in a while.

I am the crazy guy who still syncs stuff with a wire to iTunes as well.

I don't disagree with any of this, but Apple has pretty clearly shown they don't give a fuck about stuff like this. I think it's inevitable within 5 years or so.

I haven't synced manually to iTunes since I got iTunes Match, which has been a hit or miss experience for me so far. I mean it works, but it's slow to update and really stupid with how it handles playlist syncing. It initially syncs a playlist in the order the songs are in iTunes, but doesn't update that order as you add songs or move them around in the list. For instance the playlist is sorted by Last Played, it would reorder itself whenever you listen to a song. However iOS Music app does not change its order. And if you add a song to the playlist it goes to the bottom of the list no matter what, and if you have a playlist with 1000+ songs in it, have fun scrolling alllllllll the way to the bottom of the list to find that new song. And if you want to then move that song to the top (Which you can do) you then have a fun time waiting while the playlist scrolls alllllllll the way back to the top. There's no sorting options you can choose, like for instance sort by name, artist, play count, last played, etc. So it's all manual sorting and completely stupid. Especially since iTunes sorts itself automatically as soon as the information is synced back.

Plus I still can't sort certain playlists to iOS even though there aren't any songs at all in my iTunes that are ineligible. For instance, I have a smart playlist that contains every single song of a certain type (Video game remixes from OCRemix) and it syncs to iOS fine and dandy. But then I also have a subset of smart playlists that refer to that playlist as a base with more specific criteria -- like highest rated, most played, etc -- that refuse to sync at all even though they contain the exact same songs. So as a test I select all the songs in one of the incompatible playlists and create a new normal playlist and it doesn't get the "NO" icon. But since iCloud Music Library only syncs like once a day for some godforsaken reason, it'll be hours before I can even check and see if the playlist synced to iOS at all.

It's complete bullshit that it won't convey the proper information to me so I can figure out what the problem is. Not to mention that there's no reason it should block me from syncing a playlist. All the songs that are in the playlist are available on iCloud now, it just won't sync the list itself. And it shouldn't block you anyway. It should let you sync the playlist anyway but just remove any offending songs.

But other than that, it's nice to never have to open iTunes. But in the end it's completely stupid that I can't even use iTunes for management of my music properly since iCloud is so bad at syncing period. There's no reason it should only sync once a day. It should sync in real-time as changes happen. This is how cloud-based services are supposed to work. I would switch to a different company's service if it weren't for the integration Apple gives to its first-party apps. Also many of my songs are still protected so I'd have to spend $80 to convert them to non-DRM versions before I could even think about it. (I'd probably also consider switching to DropBox instead of iCloud Drive if they offered a plan lower than $10 a month. Which they don't. Because they suck.)

I have typed many words.

All Gurmans sources get fired and some prosecuted. It's amazing that people still leak to this guy.

It's amazing that Apple keeps hiring douchebags that are happy to leak company secrets. You rarely saw this happening back in the Jobs days. You'd get leaks from Chinese manufacturers, but hardly ever out of Cupertino. This leak is not great, but the one about the AR/VR headset is just jaw-dropping. Imagine if someone had leaked details about iPhone prototype hardware early on. I don't know if Tim just inspires less loyalty or fear or what, but he has to get a handle on this at Apple HQ because it gives competitors huge amounts of information about what Apple is thinking about.

Good morning my Apple family. Since a couple of days ago I've been thinking of making a switch from my 12" MacBook to the recent 15" MacBook Pro. Whats your saying peeps?

I think Apple is just much much bigger now, and clearly these rumors are from lower level people who don't really know the whole story.

So, I just got an iPhone X like a week or so ago. And Siri decided to stop listening to me today.

It can listen if I get really close, but what it hears is all wrong. Can anyone help me out with this?

That's a 13" MBP, not a 15". And there will probably be an update within a few months so I'd hold out if you can. It'll be a huge leap either way. The 12" is super underpowered. But it is nice and tiny.

Sounds like your mic is filled up with liquid or dirt / blocked by something (case? screen protector?). I've had the exact same issue with my Apple Watch a while ago and after inserting a piece of tissue into the openings, some liquid from washing it got soaked up. Worked just fine after that.

Can you guys think of any reason why I should keep my Chromecast if I have an Apple TV? Granted I have a Google Home but still

Wait, so how should I fix this, realistically?

Honestly, I don't know how haha. It's just the exact same symptoms I had with my Apple Watch and Siri so a blocked mic might very well be the reason. Did you try audio recording / calling somebody to see if the issue persists or is exclusive to Siri?

YouTube 4K / 4K HDR chromecasting as ATV 4K doesn't support the codec. That is, if you got the Chromecast Ultra

I just want to mirror my MacBook to my Sony TV to watch anime or whatever I have. Is it worth getting Apple TV 4k or there's better solutions?

(Connecting the HDMI from TV to laptop isn't one)

If anyone's looking for a good cheap 4K monitor for a Mac I highly recommend this one:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LPNKFK0/

Extremely affordable at only ~$250, great color reproduction (100% sRGB, 10-bit dithering/8-bit+FRC ala the new iMacs, actually renders the colors on the "Abstract Shapes" wallpaper in macOS correctly unlike a lot of cheaper monitors) and well calibrated out-of-the-box, two HDMI 2.0 inputs and a DisplayPort that can all do 4K/60, FreeSync from 40-60fps over DisplayPort. Extremely happy with it.

What you'll want to do is make sure that's the issue first. Try the voice memos app, can it hear you? How about phone calls, front video, and rear video? Those all use various microphones (the phone has three)

Voice memos can hear me. Phone calls are heard really low and front video can be heard sort of normally? Low, but if I put the volume all the way up, it can be heard just fine.

Is it an android TV? If so it has chromecast built in which you could cast to from chrome. Or from plex

Local files in the laptop

Yes its a Sony X930E. Yeah it has Chromecast but what if I wanna play something from VLC directly to the TV? Can I make it happen? Of course having the MB and TV connected to the same wifi

You can get VLC for Android TV. You'd need to run a DLNA server on your computer which VLC could pick up - or maybe it can access samba shares? Have a look. I use plex on my X930D and have a plex server on my computer which serves the files.

Basically other than iTunes you'll mostly have access to the same apps for android TV

Random web video? send it from youtube to your TV youtube app
Ripped movies - look into plex
Other - usb stick in the side of your TV

I got two Apple-specific issues that have been driving me crazy. The first concerns the Apple TV 4K that I recently bought. It's got it's own thread but I figure it wouldn't hurt to ask the biggest problem I have here:

Won't Play Content Correctly: This is a super weird issue, so I'll do my best to shorten things: I know that you have to select the option to match content for Dynamic Range and Frame Rate, otherwise it'll just play the content in whatever your current selected video setting is.

But even when selected, it seems to have an issue playing anything on Dolby Vision, when supported. For example, Lost in Space on Netflix will play with a black picture and sound only. The picture isn't entirely gone as I can see faint movements and shapes, so it's more like it's been darkened to a near black point. I'm even using a brand new HDMI cable and have tried connecting to my receiver, but there hasn't been a fix for this.

And I know for a fact my TV can output at Dolby Vision because the built-in Netflix app works just fine. TV is an LG E6 OLED, 2016 model. The only thing I can think of for this problem is that I'm not using the latest firmware for the TV, and the reason for that is because of the reported downgrade for HDR Gaming with the current version (unless that got fixed; I keep checking but that doesn't seem to be the case).

The other issue is with my iPad Pro and the Smart Keyboard. This is an official Smart Keyboard straight from Apple and not a knockoff, but I've been having issues for the past few months about the iPad not switching to the keyboard. I'll keep getting a "This accessory is not supported" message and have to constantly disconnect and reconnect the keyboard/cover hybrid from my iPad. I'm not sure if this is due to the recent firmware updates, but it's been like this for a while.

New laptops should be at WWDC. Though I'd think twice about moving to a 15 unless you really need the power, or it'll be mostly desk-bound. The 13s will be moving to quad-cores this update too.

There's definitely been issues with iOS 11 and the Smart Keyboards. If you have a 9.7 Pro or a 2015 12.9, Apple recently extended the warranty for those to 3 years so you could exchange it.

I had planned to take the iPad and keyboard with me to the Apple Store today but I stupidly left it behind. I'll have to remember the next time I'm nearby a store, as I'm pretty sure I should be within the three years.

Don't suppose there are any ideas about the Apple TV issue? I'm not sure if that's a problem with the box or a handshake problem with my TV.

So there's pretty good odds that Apple announces a new iteration of the iPad Pro early this next month, right? I'm trying to stay strong and not buy a 10.5 model like tomorrow.

Everyone is within three years, Smart Keyboard first released November 2015.

And it does sound like a handshake issue, don't the 2016 OLEDs have issues with Dolby vision? Try matching color and not frame rate (and vice versa) and see if you can narrow stuff down. Also make sure it's plugged into the right HDMI port on the TV and that the port is set to "enhanced" mode or whatever LG calls it

I vaguely remember there were different HDMI ports or something for the TV. Is there a way to find out which one? I've tried looking at online user manuals but it doesn't seem to have this info.

I only know of a "PC" mode that you set with the icon. I'm not aware of other modes.
