School's out, the sun's out, but who wants skin cancer? Stay inside and play some classics with the Summer Gaming Challenge!

Every year, a retro gaming community called Racketboy hosts a special gaming challenge, wherein participants pick 10 games that are considered 'classics' that they haven't played, and try to play them during the summer. Pretty cool, right? Well, I wanted to share the challenge with Era because... I can! And it's fun!

You can check out the Racketboy thread here, for all of the original rules and whatnot.

What counts as 'Summer'?
It's up to you! June 1 - August 31 is the easiest time slot for most, but others may choose the actual beginning of Summer (June 21) to the beginning of Autumn (September 22), or students may pick the end of the Spring semester to the beginning of the Fall semester. Or those in Aussie upside down world may want to just pick some dates during the upcoming months, even though it's Winter.

What counts as a 'classic'?
Honestly, that interpretation is going to change for everybody. Since Racketboy is a retro games forum most of those users' choices are going to be retro games. However, you can pick most things that are remembered fondly by many people, even if more recent. For example, some of my choices for previous years include Cave Story, Super Mario Galaxy, Earthbound, and Valkyria Chronicles. Maybe don't pick like the new God of War that isn't even a month old yet, but 'modern classics' are definitely viable for this challenge!

Of course if you want to get feedback if others think a game is 'classic enough' to put on the list you can ask, but I won't judge :)

What if I can't beat all my games?

No problem! I typically only get through about half my list each year. But it's fun trying out some backlog games that fell on the wayside.

What am I going to use this thread for?

Updates!! You can post your list, get feedback, and post updates about the games you've beaten and what you thought of them right here. Playing together as a community is exciting!

So what are you going to play? When are you going to start? Let us know and we can enjoy the classics together!

Also, some links for all of your backlog busting needs:
52 Games Challenge
2018 Backlog Blitz

There is also a Backlog ERA Discord! Quote the OP and you can find gamers with backlogs to talk about games and backlogs. Exciting!

I'm now involved in too many backlog challenges to be healthy, but always welcome incentives to beat more games so let's go! :D

Will need some time to determine a solid top 10 of classics, ideally sticking to games I've never beat, but as a rough outline I'm thinking...
  1. Myst: Masterpiece Edition
  2. Full Throttle
  3. Undertale
  4. Beyond Good & Evil
  5. Bayonetta
  6. Earthbound
  7. Planescape Torment
  8. Star Wars: KotoR
  9. Star Wars: KotoR 2
  10. Ori and the Blind Forest

Would games I started but never finished count? It'd give me a good reason to actually finish BG&E. If not, I'll think of a few other games to play instead.

I'll see if I can find 10 games available on BC on Xbox or the upcoming Sega collection. VC on the Switch would've been good for this seeing as there aren't many Nintendo games I've finished.

This is a great idea! I've been buying a bunch of PS2 and GameCube games lately, so I've got quite a few games to play for this. I think my list will be:

1. Vandal Hearts (PS1, I'm actually already playing this one)- Beaten
2. Persona 3 FES (PS2)
3. Maximo: Ghosts to Glory (PS2)
4. Half-Life (PS2)
5. Pac-Man World 2 (GameCube)
6. Sakura Wars: So Long My Love (PS2)
7. Pikmin (GameCube)
8. Shadow Hearts (PS2)
9. Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy (GameCube)
10. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance (PS2)

No idea if I will actually get through all these considering many are long RPGs, but I think I can! There aren't a ton of new releases that interest me right now anyway.

pick 10 games that are considered 'classics'

Heck yeah I want to replay the Mario series...

that they haven't played,

Heck.

OK, so this list is unlikely - but I'll try it.

Ikaruga - Switch.
Skies of Arcadia - Gamecube
Chibi-Robo - Gamecube
God Hand - PS2
Super Mario Sunshine - Gamecube - this would've been the one new game in my Mario replay.
Jak and Daxter - PS2
Final Fantasy XII - PS4
Beyond Good and Evil - PC
Kingdom Hearts - PS4
Kingdom Hearts II - PS4

However - I would be more down for a playthrough of the key games in trans gaming history - though I haven't done research for that. Any ideas?

I don't know of very many trans related games, but you could try "The House in Fata Morgana"and "2064: Read Only Memories." I haven't played either of them but I've heard really good things about Fata Morgana!

Hmm, maybe I should add Fata Morgana to my list, I could use a reason to play that one and I've only heard good things.

Me list is far from set in stone, but this is what I have so far:

Day of the Tentacle: Remastered (Steam)
Monkey Island 2: Special Edition (Steam)
Valkyria Chronicles (PS4)
Breath of Fire IV (PS1 Classics)
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2 (PS2 Classics)
Suikoden II (PS1 Classics)
Deadly Premonition: The Director's Cut (PS3)
The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap (Wii U VC)

Final Fantasy XII: Zodiac Age (PS4)
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Steam)
Mass Effect 2 (PS3)
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (PS3)
Wild ARMs (PS1 Classics)
The House of Fata Morgana (Steam)

The first batch is what I'm most likely to play, while the second batch in I'm still mulling on/backups. Trying not to have too many RPGs, lol.. .

I'll try and get through these, but some of them are kind of long so we'll see how it goes!

Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64)
Might and Magic 7 : For Blood and Honor (GOG)
Might and Magic 8 : Day of the Destroyer (Steam)
Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition (Steam)
Majesty 2 (Steam)
Tales of Legendia (PS2)
Terranigma (SNES)
Final Fantasy 7 (Steam)
Bastion (Steam)
Dragon Quest 7 (3DS)

I'm going to RPG it up in here, and definitely going to save something like Dragon Quest 7 for last. I know that game is notoriously long. I'm pretty excited to play Conker though, because it's the only collect-a-thon I haven't played from that era. I know its pretty different, but I still love those types of games!

Yea I own and beat Turtles in Time several times. Back in the SEGA/SNES days game ports between each system were usually a lot different(sometimes even by a different team all together). Hyperstone Heist was the Sega Genesis version that I never unfortunately got to beat. It has different levels/bosses. As a 90's turtles fan, I'd like to be able to say that I've beat it.

I've finalized my list :D I'm going to play from June 1-August 31. I doubt I'll get through my whole list, but it's worth a shot, as usual.

The Main List
Day of the Tentacle: Remastered (Steam) - People love this game but I've never gotten around to it. Might as well give myself a reason to try it. Probably with a guide, though.
Monkey Island 2: Special Edition (Steam) - Honestly didn't like the first one much, but I got enough confirmation from friends that they like this one more to at least give it a shot.
Valkyria Chronicles (PS4) - I keep buying this game yet not play it, and it's practically a modern classic at this point.
Breath of Fire IV (PS1 Classics) - One of those older RPGs that keep falling by the wayside. Breath of Fire isn't my favorite series but I want to give this one a decent shot.
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2 (PS2 Classics) - I played and beat the first one for last year's challenge, and loved it despite its uneven as hell difficulty. Saved the second game for this year :p
Suikoden II (PS1 Classics) - Probably the game on my list that's the "how have you not played this yet!?" game.
Deadly Premonition: The Director's Cut (PS3) - I keep getting really close to starting this, but then I turn on the PS4 instead of the PS3, whoops
The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap (Wii U VC) - I have a few unplayed Zeldas, but I'm not in the mood for Skyward Sword and I'm not sure if I want to try Majora's Mask again, so here we are.
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age (PS4) - Another game I need an excuse to start.
The House of Fata Morgana (Steam) - Since Ketkat brought it up and it's not an RPG I stuffed it in, lol

5 RPGs, 5 non-RPGs... but Deadly Premonition and Fata Morgana are still long games. RIP me.

Backups, which are all RPGs because I hate my free time
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Steam)
Mass Effect 2 (PS3)
Wild ARMs (PS1 Classics)

Oh, I forgot to post my list. I count summer as having started since classes finished so about a week ago. August 31st is probably a fair ending now that I'm graduating and won't be attending classes.

For you gaiages (:p):

Ristar (Sega Genesis and Megadrive Classics on Steam) - Beat this earlier this week oops. I found it surprisingly difficult. The grabbing mechanic feels so weird. When done right I actually do feel like I'm able to move around levels really well and feel agile, but never fully wrapped my mind around it. Overall I'd say it was very charming and fun!

Shining Force (Sega Genesis and Megadrive Classics on Steam) - Am playing right now, maybe 2/3's of the way through

Shining Force 2 (Sega Genesis and Megadrive Classics on Steam)
Beyond Oasis (Sega Genesis and Megadrive Classics on Steam)
Landstalker (Sega Genesis and Megadrive Classics on Steam)
Final Fantasy 7 (Steam)
Ys 1 (Steam)
Ys 2 (Steam)
Jet Set Radio (Steam)
Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)

I'll probably play these the same way I always do, generally alternating between "action" and "rpg." I've tackled Super Mario Bros. 3 before years ago but I'm pathetically bad at classic mario lol.

Oh, also I plan to play Shining Force CD between 1 and 2, so one of the games on the list might get bumped if I can get my hands on it. Otherwise these are probably the games unless something else catches my attention.

I was just thinking about this thread because I started "preparing". You know, picking my games out from the shelves and stuff so that I know where I have them and trying to figure out which one to start with.

Chrono Trigger and Earthbound feel more intimidating than the others, while I am pretty sure the adventure P&C games will be quick ones.
I have no idea about anything regarding System Shock and Ys, but Minish Cap and Yoshi's Island are games I have played before.

So I am thinking I'll start with Yoshi and when I am done I'll move on to Earthbound to see how it feels. I'll probably juggle games too, especially since I have Chrono Trigger and Minish Cap on handhelds.
...Now I am picturing me actually juggling the handheld consoles. Hah.

This could be fun! I've always meant to join one of these backlog busting threads since there's a lot to get through. Going to try and get through these titles for the first time:

1. Castlevania (NES)
2. Dragon Quest III
3. Sonic the Hedgehog 2
4. Mega Man X
5. Kirby Super Star
6. Star Ocean 2
7. Napple Tale
8. Severed
9. Katamari Damacy
10. Pokemon Platinum

I get the feeling I'll be shelving all the long RPGs when Octopath Traveler comes out but I should have more time during summer at least.

1. Half-Life - Black Mesa (Steam)
2. Super Metroid (SNES)
3. Pillars of Eternity (Steam)
4. Call of Duty 4 Remastered (Steam)
5. STEINS;GATE (Steam)
6. Vanquish (Steam)
7. Ys: Oath in Felghana (Steam), maybe Ys 1+2 first I'm still unsure
8. Final Fantasy III (SNES)
9. Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
10. Day of the Tentacle (Steam)

I'll start from shortest to longest since there are multiple RPG's that are really time-consuming. Probably won't be able to finish even half of the games but I'm still trying anyways.

Do 1 hour or less games count? Asking because I plan on beating both Golden Axe 1 & 2 as I never played them as a kid. It almost feels like cheating by counting them and figured I'd ask.

Nah, no rules on game length at all. :) Play what you wanna play~ Well, for the most part.

Now that it's June 1 and I'm officially getting myself started, this will be my main post. I'll update it as I beat games, of course, but I also encourage everyone to share their thoughts on the games they play in separate posts too (whether you just want to write a quick blurb or do an all-out review). We can discuss and be all cool and whatnot, together!

Here is my finalized list. I added Yakuza.

Day of the Tentacle: Remastered (Steam)
Monkey Island 2: Special Edition (Steam)
Valkyria Chronicles (PS4)
Yakuza Kiwami (PS4)
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2 (PS2 Classics)
Suikoden II (PS1 Classics)
Deadly Premonition: The Director's Cut (PS3)
The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap (Wii U VC)
Final Fantasy XII: Zodiac Age (PS4)
The House of Fata Morgana (Steam)

I'm going to start off with Yakuza Kiwami because I've been itching to play that one. After that I'll probably delve into one of the RPGs on my list... there's a few of them, after all. I still need to make sure everything is downloaded to the PS3, too... damn that nigh unuseable PS3 PSN Store, lol.

My 10 games that I plan on beating over the summer are:

1. Golden Axe 2 Completed- Beat it a few days ago. Never tried the series previously and 2 was the only one from playing the first 15 minutes that I enjoyed so decided to finish it.

2. Final Fantasy 3 (6)Completed - Finally beat it after Kefka tormented me in my childhood. Solid game, but wouldn't rank it in my top 5 Final Fantasy games.

3. Phantasy Star 4: The End of the Millennium - Another game I didn't finish growing up.

4. Streets of Rage - Beat 2 and 3 growing up, but never played the original to completion.

5. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - Have never played it before.

6. Earthbound - Another game I never played due to not owning any Nintendo console in between the NES and now the Switch.

7. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars - Same as the previous 2 games.

8. Secret of Mana - Still unsure if I'll play it on SNES mini or the remake on PS4.

9 and 10 are still undecided, but it will be something from this list.

Phantasy Star 2
Phantasy Star 3: Generations of Doom
Shining Force
Shining Force 2
Shining in the Darkness
Super Metroid
Super Castlevania 4
Final Fantasy 12
Kingdom Hearts 1
Kingdom Hearts 2

I've never played the last 8 and never finished the first 2.

Ended up finishing Vandal Hearts and really enjoyed it. Holds up well for an early PS1 strategy RPG, and has a surprisingly good localization for the time.

I started Persona 3 FES but just wasn't feeling it. It's been almost a year since I beat Persona 5 but somehow it still feels too soon. Maybe I'll go back to it later this summer, or change up my list instead.

I decided to sub in Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance instead and put a few hours in today. Pretty fun hack and slash ARPG, the presentation is particularly good for games of this era. I can see why it's so beloved. I definitely see myself finishing this one.

Started Yoshi's Island during the weekend. It's harder than I remember. Still gonna try to 100% it. Wish me luck! ;D

I also started Day of the Tentacle and realized it contains Maniac Mansion. I had completely forgotten that part! So I switched out Ys for Maniac Mansion and will play through that before playing more of DotT.

First game of the challenge down!

NZbzLbC.png

Played this one on the Wii U eshop after previously owning but never finishing as a child. There's really not much to it tbh. The point and click gameplay is charming enough but there's a lot of repetitive animations that can't be skipped which add padding to a game that's already really short. Some of pac-man's animations are absolutely iconic so I guess it's a net positive as to the existence of this game? Either way I know this is a stretch for a classic but I feel like it fits in the spirit of this thread in terms of getting to stuff we missed/never finished before.

Looking forward to playing the other ones!

Played for about 12 hours yesterday and finished both of these!

TKcCIDM.png

I love a game called The Cat Lady and I had no idea a whole section of that game is a huge homage to Maniac Mansion! That was so cool! I also realized that I had tried Maniac Mansion as a kid because I clearly recognized parts of the mansion. I gave up very quickly and I can understand why. The game is... old. I had to check a guide a couple of times because I got stuck and got some game overs. It worked better than expected tho and had some fun moments. I can't say that the story and such kept me going, it was more the idea of finally beating a "real classic".

gG7I8MQ.png

This one tho! Woah! I had a lot of fun with this. I don't have much to say about it at the moment tho, my thoughts are all over and it's harder to give praise than complain for some reason! ;D
Will post more in the 52 games thread later.

Next I will probably play Full Throttle and Grim Fandango. But I really should start Earthbound or Chrono Trigger soon too...

2nd game completed now to start game 3. Thinking of either Streets of Rage or A Link to the Past.

Edit: 3 games done. 2 fast games in Golden Axe 2 and Streets of Rage and 1 40+ hour game in Final Fantasy 6. Thinking of Earthbound next. Have never even touched it previously so here's hoping it's as good as advertised.

Took a quick look at your Backloggery and saw that you have both Metro 2033 and Last Light.

I highly recommend them, still one of my favourite FPS series.
Oh yes I have tried 2033 and seen a bit of them when my SO have played them. I love S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and the Metro books so I bet they will be great.
But I'm trying to use this challenge to play even older games that I am less likely to play otherwise. Since I am looking forward to Exodus I am likely to play Metro soon anyway. But I will think about it!

Currently playing Phantasy Star 2 and the grinding is rough. I'll see if I can push thru it over the weekend and see how I feel afterwards. Also started Earthbound so I might just transition fully to that game. We'll see.

I remade my list quite a bit. Replaced the P&C and Yoshi with
  • Syndicate
  • Wolfenstein 3D
  • Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption
...and promptly finished Wolfy!

y07ZrF5.png

This is a game I played when I was about 7 years old. My dad had a laptop and my brother and I always fought about who would get to play this, Commander Keen, Lemmings, SkiFree, Chip's Challenge and all the other cool games. I always won of course. ;)
I don't think I have ever played episode 2-6 before, so I guess I only had the first free episode as a kid.

I didn't even remember that I had this until some days ago. I think I got it in some Bethesda bundle on Steam ages ago!
I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to control this without going insane. Ended up playing with different control methods each session. Keyboard only, mouse only, a combination of both and lastly a gamepad. I wasn't happy with any of them. Thankfully, I didn't find the game hard at all. Just don't go in guns blazing into every room and if you just find a couple of secrets here and there you will have all the ammo and health you need. The hardest part is to navigate the boring levels.

It was fun to finish a game I played a lot as a kid, but that's pretty much where the positives end for me. It was cool when it came out but aside from wanting to relive some nostalgic moments I can't see a reason to play stuff like this today.

Alright, here we go

- Half-Life (Black Mesa)
- Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
- Day of the Tentacle (Remastered)
- The Secret of Monkey Island (Special Edition)
- Resident Evil (HD Remaster)
- Condemned: Criminal Origins
- Portal
- Grim Fandango (Remastered)
- Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
- Syberia
(- Syberia 2)
Took me some time but I beat the first (and longest) game on my list: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Glad I finally played this game. I'll quote my impressions from the 52 games thread below. Right now I'm not sure which game I want to play next, probably something that isn't part of the Summer Challenge (Uncharted 4 or Until Dawn). I also consider replacing Resident Evil with Resident Evil 0.

#39: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (PC) | 35.5h | June 16 | ★★★★½

It still holds up quite well for a game that released 15 years ago. The role play mechanics are well done and you get a great variety of skills, feats and force powers to build your character. You can also decide if you want to follow the light or dark side or stay neutral in that regard. Since it's a Bioware game you get some companions to choose from. They all have different abilities to aid you in battle and all of them have interesting backstories and some of them also have smaller character missions. There's generally a lot of dialogue which can get quite exhausting if you decide to listen to all of it but it's throughout well written. Which leads me to the story which I loved. It's engaging throughout the entire game, there were some unexpected plot twists and I really liked The Old Republic era it's set in. Gameplay is solid but not praiseworthy. I used quite a lot of mods which I can only recommend. Basically every mod listed in this mod compilation, including the widescreen patch and upscaling the cutscenes to 1080p.

Finished my first game of summer - Sonic 2!

I played it as a kid but never got any further than Hill Top Zone. After getting through the whole thing, Casino Night and Mystic Cave zones were the highlights, but some of the later ones weren't much fun thanks to all the obstacles that punish you for going too fast. I now hate all seahorses. The final boss is the worst - I'm not ashamed to say I used save states there to avoid being sent back to the start of the game! This type of platforming still hasn't clicked with me, but I still enjoyed Sonic 2's breezy 90s Sega style. The backgrounds and animation still look nice and the soundtrack has some of the best music on the console. Well, except for Wing Fortress Zone. Thank god that area only had one act.

Couldn't decide whether I wanted to play UC4 or Until Dawn, so I settled for another game form my list: Day of the Tentacle Remastered. Not my kind of game even though I usually enjoy adventures. But it's a short game at least and another +1 for the 52 games challenge and for this one as well.

Short write-up.

4 games done.

Final Fantasy 6
Phantasy Star 2
Streets of Rage
Golden Axe 2

Not sure what's next yet, but it's probably going to be something on the SNES classic. The other games besides Final Fantasy 6 that I've been wanting to play on it are The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Secret of Mana, Super Mario RPG, and Earthbound.

Another game beaten!

This one was hard to get into. I ended up watching a bit of a let's play to help me figure out what the game was asking me to do. But as soon as I understood all the different mechanics I had quite fun. I'll give this a thumbs up.
