My main disappointment is I wanted a feature where I could face-cam with Reggie

I want to be able to interrupt Reggie's day and ask him how he's feeling, etc

There is. Earbuds plug into switch and go into your ears. Put wireless headphones on top of that and have it wirelessly connect to your phone. Technically, its a one wire solution.

That would work, although be weird haha. Never had a headphone on over an earbud. I'm going to try that just because.

It's kinda hilarious to see people act like NES games are in any way an enticing prospect for modern day gamers. That, and the online aspects of this offering are so damn barebones that it boggles the mind they are actually going to charge money for it.

But hey, if you want to play MK8 or Splatoon online, you don't really have a choice in the matter.
Seriously. Has anyone even played NES games recently? It's painful.

The vintage games are the big draw here. I wonder if they will eventually start putting gameboy/color/advance games on, they have a massive back catalog. One old nintendo game I'd love the play is the old Popeye arcade game, used to love it lol

20$ a year for cloud saves, online with a shitty voice solution and ancient games.
Or 35 if there are more than one user on a switch.

God damn. Nintendo just are not good at this online thing, are they?

Ya'll acting like $1.67 a month is some gigantic scam with this fairly small offering of 20 games with added online and cloud saves. A service that will very likely include SNES, N64, GB, GBA ,GC and so on also with added online down the line.

Nah. 20 is the stuff you casually throw at some random indie in the eshop every other month. That for a year is basically meaningless in terms of money lost.

It's frustrating that we're expected to pay at all and still not get basic features that every other console has. Not being able to message friends via the Switch is ridiculous and I don't care how cheap it is, it doesn't change that fact.

NES had Tetris.

These posts...

My point was that a simple puzzle game might be good still, but most action games just havent aged well. Honestly, Tetris is great, but I have played it a thousand times. I wouldn't play the NES version, even if Nintendo gave it to me for free. There might be something like that still worth playing (Dr. Mario) but the library of games, outside of that, are just outdated. Mega Man, and SMB3 still have a charm to them, but evey other franchise I can think of just feels stale or rigid compared to, say, their SNES counterparts.

Played Splatoon 2 that way. Didn't use the Nintendo app cus it cuts off at certain times when you're not on the same team. Just used regular phone chat.

Yeah not having a steady line of communication really kills the app imo. At the very least everyone I ever play with or plan to play stuff like Smash with has other means to communicate. May not be ideal but at least it's possible.

As someone with no interest in voice chat, I'm happy with this initial offering. The rate of added games as well as the nature of the online sales will be the final decider of how happy I am with it. I'm all digital and already buy a lot of games on digital sales and if done right I can see the yearly price being made up after just 3 purchases.

Note that the VC was originally one of the things Iwata talked about as the way to get veteran gamers who no longer played video games, to get back into them on the Wii. And Nintendo's (departing) president has said that this upcoming year on the Switch is about targeting veteran gamers who no longer play video games (as well as people who never played Nintendo games). So it does seem to me that the new Nintendo might view the VC game service as important.

But only in the sense of setting it up as an alternative to the Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Now. At least for the moment.

I guess this is my Splatoon 2 tax. The NES games are just bonus. Nothing else really interests me. Discounts are nice I guess.

NES games are really old. Some are still kinda fun. Some are total shit. They really should move to other systems too. I'd pay more money for a more comprehensive digital library.

Hopefully, they expand from NES games for the service at some point, but that's going to probably take forever if it even happens eventually in regards to some platforms like GameCube as they'll probably do it system by system (NES > SNES > N64 > etc). The same with previous handheld games if they add that to the service eventually. They're more likely to do classics than modern games like PS+ and Live do, especially starting out. It really sucks that there isn't any kind of save backup to a Micro SD or even a USB drive when docked that any user can use, regardless of having the service or not, along with the cloud saves. The voice chat through the app still is annoying along with not having a system level interface to message and chat with friends. Discounts is good, but I need to know what the discounts will be. I like the cheaper price compared to other services, but this service is really lacking from what has been shown.

Pretty fucked up to start charging for online play after a year. They should have just continued to eat the cost with how well the console is doing, especially when you can say you're the only one not charging. And fuck paying for cloud saves lol.

the good news is that you could put the entire nes catalog on your switch and you wouldn't even put a dent in your 32 gbs of space!

It amazes how often Nintendo are able to kick own goals when it comes to online gaming. They just don't get it.

Yes. You lose saves, but can get the games again. The only limit is you have to first deactivate the games from the old console, and if you can't do it yourself (broken/stolen Switch), call Nintendo and they will do it for you.

http://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/22453/~/how-to-transfer-digital-games-/-nintendo-accounts-between-nintendo-switch

That still is super unecessary. On PlayStation and Xbox I can play games from multiple systems as long as I have a primary system and log in. I shouldn't have to call Nintendo if my system suddenly dies on me.

I imagine the Pokemon games won't have cloud backup for save file, but i will be surprised if it was supported to some degree (like if you transfer a Pokemon, then restored a save file, you won't be able to use the Pokemon you transferred, but that will be next level of security if they managed to do that, extreamly hard).

I wanna see stuff like from GBA. They've tapped the NES well waaaaay too many times.

EDIT: That said, for $20/year there's no way I'm not biting lol

No, like I said I think they might view the VC as important for getting a large audience of gamers who no longer play modern video games. In the sense of getting millions of new Switch owners.

I think some NES action games hold up and can still be fun to this day. Problem is most of the better titles are also the more obscure ones that Nintendo sometimes doesn't republish:
Games like: River City Ransom, Double Dragon II, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, Jackie Chan's Action Kung-Fu, etc.

But it's true that it still seems kind of weak considering we want to play through all of Nintendo's history, something that sadly we probably will ever see on the Switch.

It's always been ridiculous and this being a thing doesn't make it any more or less of a problem. It's still a thing they need to implement, and they can. They're not in some time-freeze now just because they've told the initial features for their online.

You said the only thing you wanted is games attached to your account, not your console. And that's how Nintendo set it up, it's easy to redownload the games, and it's no longer a situation where if you lose the console or it breaks, all your digital purchases are lost forever. They just don't want people letting their friends play free games without buying them.

Oh wow cloud saves actually happened.
Though its bad the only method of backing up saves is behind a paywall.
That and other than cloud saves and the nes games, (which I dont care about), nothing of value to truly justify the paid online subscription, which is what I pretty much expected. No voice chat, no messaging, no achievements, no share play, no free native games for the system... a lot of which are available on other consoles without needing to have a subscription.
Granted the switch subscription is cheaper, it would be a disaster if it wasnt, but still dont see enough of an online infrastructure to justify this.

EDIT: Oh wow. It does have voice chat but still requires the app..

Paid online without basic messaging features.

What a fucking joke.
Are all games gonna have app functionality? I doubt it.

Without this monstrous situation:
nintendo-switch-online-cords-100730493-large.jpg

I've been able to use the app to great effect by avoiding headphones altogether. Phone on the table, Switch on the television or in my hands. No crazy splitters, no game echo (which was my biggest concern), and the app having the added benefit of shifting friends around within voice chat as the team composition changes. It's a shockingly easy solution, and I sort of wonder if the goal was to make voice chat a feasible thing to do for a portable without having to also drag around a headset.

The NES games are worthless to me, I've owned and played all of them to death. And I'm not paying $20 a year for cloud saves. Let me back up my saves manually (put the SD card in the computer, copy files, or something like that) for free, Nintendo. Don't force me to spend money to back up my saves.

I'd be happy to spend $40-$50 a year for a PS Plus-like service that gave me several retail games to play in addition to online play and cloud saves. That's a much better value, and I think most gamers would prefer it. But knowing how stingy Nintendo is this will probably never happen.
Same here. I'm not wasting precious gaming time on nes games. I would rather pay $60 for a real service with real features and real games. This is basically a $20 fee to play Splatoon to me, a year after having played it for free.

Its probably been asked before, but I don't want to read through 30 pages full of replies.. Are those NES games free to keep or is it a free rental kind of thing?

Voice chat relying on the app is such a huge step back though. ugh. I can give it a pass for handheld mode, but not for docked. Absolutely ridiculous.

Free as long as you're subbed like PS Plus

People acting like they aren't going to be signed up to play their favorite online games anyways. Smash, Kart, Pokemon, Splatoon. I'm sure something will get you signed up.

I'm still disappointed in that voice chat app. And leading with NES games.

I wonder what they do with the cloud saves if your subscription runs out.

Because, I have splattoon 2 and Mario kart but I'm not playing online.

So this may equal $20 just for cloud saves, for me, in the beginning. Hopefully, they branch out with the free games to other platforms. N64 and gcn (I would prefer gcn or wii games).

Edit: wave race and fzero, with online? That would be exciting.

20 a year is pretty tiny in comparison to Sony and Microsoft. And the NES games are pretty solid.

That said, the 60 I pay a year for PSN gets me far better games and a far better online environment in every conceivable way.

Nintendo has been pretty on point with the Switch, it's time they fixed there terrible online offerings.

I haven't gone through the whole thread but is there a cloud size limit?

Also can you save directly to cloud or is it a save backup type service where it needs to be scheduled or done manually and it can still get fucked?
