Cloud saves confirmed!
Whoo, finally.
Only for subscribers.
Oh for fucks sake Nintendo.
Online Play: A Nintendo Switch Online membership will be needed to participate in co-op and competitive online features for many current and upcoming Nintendo Switch games
So, this means that the upcoming Pokémon game won't have mystery gift and the Pokémon bank paywalled behind this. That's good.

Cheap enough, so I'm cool with this. Very curious exactly how that family package works though. If it's only up to 8 users across one switch console then that's cool, but if it can be for profiles over multiple separate machines then that could be insanely cheap for a subscription service.

Forcing you to pay to be able to backup saves is offensive.
The PS4 offers cloud saves only to paying subscribers to PlayStation Plus (a $50 annual subscription) and syncs those saves to the cloud when you log out of the system but limits online save data storage to. I think Nintendo is still cheap.

While Microsoft has already a cloud systrm, they can do it easy for free.

Well, anyone that had followed nintendo for years knew that would something like this. Not really amused or surprised, but online play in games that originally were not online, this is a first for a game developer, isn't? Of course it was available since forever on unnoficial emulators, but even those had a lot of struggles. I'm really curious to see how nintendo fares on this "innovation".

That's not who they're competing with tho.

Microsoft offers free cloud saves, Backwards Compatibility for previous generations and has more robust online infrastructure and they offer games from current and previous generation with subscription.

Sony gives you option to back up your saves locally, also games from current generation for subscription and still worse online infrastructure than MS but above Nintendo one.

That is their competition and they already do it better.

Then how I have all my PS4 saves backed up online for free? Guess what I can just copy saves on USB stick and upload it on my FREE 100+ GB OneDrive.

$20usd/year?... Gladly I take the offer (more with cloud saves)...

Just thinking of old games with online multiplayer compability... Bomberman (or Super Bomberman series) would be dope for this mode...

It's literally the same architecture, ARM. That has nothing to do with voice chat. When you want to do multiple things (aka multiple applications i.e. running a game and a voice chat application) at once, you have to keep them in memory so that they can be run on the CPU. However, you have to manage how much memory is allotted to each program. This is a huge aspect of OS development, it's called multi-programming, and there is a huge amount of information on the subject over how to best enable multiple programs to run at once even when small amounts of physical memory are available. The biggest is virtual memory, but that's not the point. The fact that the Switch's pool of physical memory is an order of magnitude larger than that of the Xbox 360 or Vita (and the amount of memory reserved for the operating system, separate from the games that are being run) is sufficient to tell us that, no, Nintendo really doesn't care about voice chat.

I don't think you're going to listen to reason though, continue believing what you want to believe.

Despite the fact you laid that barb at the end, you brought some solid technical language to the discussion and you make a solid point. Until your explanation I just thought it would end up the same way it did on PS3.

They are avoiding a potentially nasty situation with creeps and children, it's likely it is just policy. Your argument also makes a good case for keeping on Nintendo to let them know we would like voice chat.

Cloud saves, finally. And the family plan is a nice thing if no further restrictions. Other than that, nothing surprising, Nintendo already announced NES games and compatible online NES/SNES games a while back.
I was hoping for voice chat built directly into the console and an achievement system, because of the 1-year delay... it's really the basic online thing we saw one year ago (+ cloud saves).

Ha! Maybe in 5 years.
I don't know why these devs continue to rerelease their oldest games all the fucking time. The same with Sega AGES only having Genesis/Megadrive games, despite people having played them all tons of times and not having the much rarer Saturn and DC games. How many times do people need to play the original LoZ? Adding in some weird online co-op mode doesn't make it a new experience. Why not SNES games? N64 or GC? Wtf

Do people really have 6 other people they can trust to give them the money for the family plan when it renews? I cant even find one person in life thats trustworthy

I want to know more about the exclusive sales. I buy a ton of indie games on the eShop. But I bet what they mean is 10% off Mario Odyssey or something like that.

I'm a bigtime Nintendo hater the past 3 generations, because I hate their low hardware specs.

But I have zero problem with this cloud save announcement, it's completely reasonable.

20 bucks is nothing, it literally costs me 12 bucks each time I go to McDonalds (two Bacon Clubhouse burgers and one large fries)

My problem with this announcement is not the price or the content, it's the fact that we still don't know where the service is heading in the distant/near future?

Are NES games the only thing we're going to get? Is every VC game going to have online multiplayer? How many games will be added on what frequency?

It's standard Nintendo communication I guess.

And another thing, why was this delayed for?

I.. don't think it's that bad actually. Also all the details have not been revealed yet.

Also from what I watched on the gamexplain video it seems you're able to play these NES games online and voice chat etc. You gotta start somewhere, trying out NES on the system would be an excellent starting point.

However the Switch voice app has gotta go. I'd be shocked if it doesn't seeing as how they've delayed it this long.. what was the delay even for if it's not reworking the entire voice communication method.

SNES, you have a point. N64, hard system to emulate accurately at a good framerate, and since the Switch has an entirely different architecture than any previous Nintendo system, they'd have to rewrite the emulator, so can't use the one they made for Gamecube. That will take time. Gamecube, never gonna happen, for a similar reason - damn hard console to emulate, Dolphin took years to become decent on full-power PCs. Microsoft is able to run old games because all of their consoles were basically built upon the standard PC architecture, so they only have to translate the various hardware differences to whatever the new system has, but with the Switch Nintendo has abandoned their old architectures.

Everything has pretty much been said, so put me with the group of people NOT happy with how Nintendo is handling this.

Yeah, I'm not paying for this. Embarrassingly weak offering considering how far this was delayed.

Build up a solid library, 1st and 3rd party, of a variety of legacy platforms, and I'll consider it in a couple years.

Nintendo took this long to announce the same thing they teased in March last year?
Oh boy, $20 for NES games we've already bought a million times and we can download for free on smartphones and PC? Man, what a steal!
Also, lol no backup saves

wat the heck, how do u get super full just from 10 nuggets???

I'm in TEXAS so my McDonalds order is not even considered that much food. When I go to steakhouses, I usually get a 24-oz Porterhouse, along with two full sides (macaroni & cheese and mashed potatoes), along with a full salad bar too, and then a cheesecake for dessert usually.

I initially thought that too, but then I remembered that there'll be duping no matter what due to saves being attached to accounts instead of cartridges.
I'm talking about actually duplicating your save file. You could upload your save, trade all of your Pokemon to a friend locally, and then download the save backup to get all of them back. I can't think of a way to stop that without either getting rid of offline trading altogether, or just not offering cloud saving for Pokemon.

Knowing Nintendo, they gonna give me Super Mario Bros. and Tetris. No thank you.
Don't knock Nintendo apology gifts. Nintendo gave the most amazing gift to 3DS owners after the price drop: a Virtual Console filled with GBA games! The Ambassador program included these games:
  • Metroid Fusion
  • Mario vs. Donkey Kong
  • Mario Kart: Super Circuit
  • Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3
  • WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!
  • The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
  • Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
  • Wario Land 4
  • F-Zero: Maximum Velocity
  • Kirby & the Amazing Mirror
Not to mention NES games:
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Metroid
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
  • Balloon Fight
  • Ice Climber
  • NES Open Tournament Golf
  • Donkey Kong Jr.
  • Yoshi
  • Wrecking Crew

So in my case, since I have two little brothers who play Splatoon 2 as much as I do, I'm basically forced to buy a family plan.

Oh well, I expected this service to be as much a screw-up as any live service, so I'm not surprised. At least there are cloud saves.
