Those are probably the only 2 games still worth playing from the entire library, and only for posterity. You think you want to play those old games, but when you actually sit down to do it you quickly realize they are terrible. I bought a NES classic thinking it would be tons of fun. Ended up playing it for a couple hours tops. Why play LoZ when I can play BotW? Why play SMB3 when I can play MO? Modern games are just so much better in every way. SNES is where I think you can start to argue that some games were timeless masterpieces.

Because LoZ and SMB3 are entirely different games from BotW and Odyssey? They're not even remotely comparable beyond being in the same franchise and featuring the same main characters - I'd even consider the two Zelda games entirely different genres, and the two Mario games at least different sub-genres.
I play NES games to this day, while with most modern games, it's one and done. And I absolutely disagree that NES games are terrible, or modern games better in every way.

I absolutely much rather play Castlevania 3 instead of Mirror of Fate. I absolutely much rather play SMB3 over New Super Mario Bros. I absolutely much rather play Metroid NES over Other M.

Nice to have at least confirmed that it's only $20. Compared with competitors pricing rackets it's better. Nice about cloud saves, though I don't think I even turned it on on PS4 yet. YMMV but after 31 years of gaming I never had important saves get lost. Weird it took this long to confirm their earlier rumours, maybe they just wanted to announce it closer to release. You would've expected them to happily proclaim they sorted out their terrible voice chat system, but alas.

These family plan hopes are giving me flashbacks to pre-launch xbone when people were planning to make game-sharing "families" which was quickly deconfirmed by Microsoft. I think Nintendo is likewise going to be veeeery wary of people exploiting this.

I don't know what you guys were expecting for 20$ a year...

Obviously they can't give normal games like Sony or Microsoft. But they can use their heritage.

It's true that I thought they will use their whole catalog of almost every console to do something like Netflix (yes, I know) with their own games. But it seems it will be only NES games.

That doesn't necessarily mean that in the near future they won't do something like I've said with the VC...

But what makes me mad today is that they said we will have more details in May, and everything they have said, we knew that already. The only thing is new is the Family Membership...

Obviously they are real games, technically. But if the games are so boring, so derivative, so mundane that you would never play them, then for all intents and purposes they're not real games anymore. To me NES games are like black and white silent films. Technically yes, they are films. But I would never really want to watch one and I get it if someone said 'those aren't films'. By today's standards they're not.

Would you consider yourself a real gamer?
Serious question.

So forget Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Raging Bull etc... because Transformers or the newest soulless piece of loud trash is more current and relevant.

Complete and utter pish posh

I'm interested in seeing what the restrictions are for the Family Membership. I'm not sure how I feel about supporting Balloon Fight though. That game is the penny of video game. They keep giving it to me and I don't even want it once. Can't they make a separate tier without Balloon Fight. They can even charge a premium for it.

Strange Nintendo didn't announce a brand new game to sell this.
Seems very unappealing at the moment.

Still requiring the terrible mobile app makes this a hard pass for me, personally.

I had hoped the delays were to improve the core concept of what they were doing. Instead I guess it was solely to put it out alongside Smash?

Kuwait.
you can't even message your friends

Even if there was they would not nail it.

at this point they should seek out others to provide such systems for them, maybe they can indeed talk with Discord and pay them or anybody else. (Seriously creating an integrated Discord app for Switch that can run in the background would be amazing)

Hmm, does this mean that I can have my Nintendo Profile on 2 Consoles finally? As I'm sure currently you have to unlink your Nintendo Account from the other one right now.

Also, I'd pay extra for Digital Game Sharing.

And here I thought Nintendo delayed tbis because they realised their offering was shitty and needed much more to it. Now they return over a year later with the same shitty service they service they announced way back then.

Really?? Really??? I find it lacklustre as a paid service really. The most annoying bit is that I will have to pay 15$ more so that my kids can use their accounts in the very same hardware under the very same roof. Unless subscribers get games discounts that end up swallowing the price, I may seriously consider speaking with my wallet...must...resist...

I mean considering they ended up selling it at a loss after the price cut, it couldn't have been that overpriced
3DS was so overpriced that people didn't buy the consoles, so publishers that had announced that they were working on 3DS games quietly canceled them. $250 was just too much for a handheld that didn't have any huge first-party games.

So Nintendo gave people who had paid the $80 extra a bunch of exclusive VC games, that remain exclusive to this day. Nintendo is great at giving apology gifts. I'm never selling that 3DS!

Eh, think people might be overreacting a bit. It has the cloud saves everyone was hoping for and it's going to cost a lot of people about $2 a month. Not sure what everyone was expecting from Nintendo. When it comes to online offerings, it seems wise to expect a slim offering from Nintendo to avoid disappointment.

Totally in line with my expectations.

Price is fair and i have three older phones at home i can use for the app situation.

WTF? Why did they take all this time to delay it, they haven't even changed anything!

It's honestly staggering that there is no in-system voice chat, messaging or party function.

I love my Switch but I won't be paying for that.

I was hoping for the ability to both voice chat and listen to game audio at the same time. With the App situation, the Switch has worse online than the PSP.

I don't mind NES games, especially if you can keep them. But this selection is quite meh.

Looks like the euro prices are the same numbers as the US prices with the dollar signs switched to euro signs. Expected, but a bit disappointing, even though it's just a difference of a few euros even on the 12-month plan.

Also seems like Europe won't be getting a family plan? It's at least not listed on the couple of pages of European regions that I checked. Not that I would personally even need it.

The $20 I am fine with for Cloud saves. I spend $60 for it on PlayStation since I don't play online. Well that and the discounts.

What actually annoys me is still no integrated achievement support. It's the only modern console still missing a now basic feature.

Cloud saves and Smash. If I can back up my BotW and Odyssey saves online, this is worth it. Don't give a fuck.

Twenty dollars a year is doable

Well, I didn't expect much and got exactly zero reasons to be excited for. Yay.
Cloud saves are nice but somewhat brought down by NES games I couldn't care less about. That makes it even.

I hope for more details before it launches, subscription based sales on the eshop would be a great way to get me more invested.

If it completely stays like this I might rather drop playing Splatoon than buying into the service tbh. That'd be quite a shame but there are not enough online experiences that would make me want to pay for this.

Well, there it is. There is no Virtual Console planned for Switch. It's just free NES games, as I had long suspected. The only reason Nintendo would've held it back this long is to integrate it with the Online Service, in my mind. VC is gone. I'm very disappointed with Nintendo atm.

Nintendo actively removing value from their console over a year after launch.

Fucking genius.

Yeah, Nintendo is underwhelming in this area and their decision to double down on the app seems doomed to fail, as I can't imagine many people use it.

Buuuuut I'm still going to want to play Splatoon, Mario Kart and Smash Bros online in September, so the 2$ a month is worth it for that in my mind. I have one less low-tier coffee from a gas station that month and I'm no worse off.
