Honestly, my biggest hope for this service is that since the Switch is global, we could end up seeing some older NES games that never left Japan get an English version. And if SNES games end up on the service, too, then some of those as well.

Or ... you just let him play with your account. If you're worried about saves ... hey you can then back them up at least. Or maybe just tell him to not mess with saves from other games.
Steam is the main focus for Valve, not really games. Nintendo (and the others for that) have to look at hardware and software in addition to the online service.
But the developers and folks working behind the scenes say Nintendo can't do any of those things you say, lol, including FailOverflow. That can't happen cos then Nintendo can see that you're connected online with a hacked console = banned console.
Was thinking Fire Emblem, actually. Also never say never. Earthbound Zero exists. This will never happen in a million years. You'll get Urban Champion, like everyone else. Not Famicom Tantei Club.
But having voice chat locked away is a statement of intent: "You don't need voice chat to play this game." And that means games will not be designed around it and will, hopefully, have decent enough communication options to coordinate with strangers without just defaulting to voice chat as the only option.
Muting does not give me what I want. It just locks me out of communications. Games being designed to function without voice chat gives me what I want. Like Splatoon getting away with having just three call outs. "That was great!" "Let's attack together!" and "Danger! Enemy!"
Sony has paid cloud saves as well. But yeah. Still only $20 though so that's a plus.
That would be ace!SNES Super Mario Kart online would be awesome! please do that nintendo!!!!
That's cool and Splatoon is pretty genius when it comes to non-verbal communication. But having voice chat locked away is a statement of intent: "You don't need voice chat to play this game." That has never been a problem with any other mp games. You have people going rank one on different games without talking at all.But having voice chat locked away is a statement of intent: "You don't need voice chat to play this game." Look at the games. There are better multiplayer games for the NES. Online co-op Contra, Battletoads, River City Ransom, Double Dragon, Life Force, TMNT would be better than fucking Ice Climbers. (I know there are fans of Ice Climbers. Shut up.)So I have a question. A question that is completely separate to the cloud saves issue but is in response to many comments in this thread.
Do people not like NES games any more? Are they not still classics? Why is there not more excitement when there was loads for the NES Classic?

I don't trust Nintendo regarding this, knowing how they handled VC in the last years. I feel like they will add some NES games and then just forget about it.I do think too many people are sleeping on the classic games element.
Included in the subscription we have these classic games, with added online features, all for no extra cost, with more to be added regularly including SNES and probably more consoles.
That's huge and would have been worth the price alone in my view. It's pretty much what we've wanted for a long time, just wish it didn't have the dripfeed, but I get why.

You can already do that, can't you? You just sign in, or...? You don't get your save files brought along though, so i guess that will be the improvement. Or do they have some weird restrictions on using the same account on more than one Switch today? I haven't tried it.
That's popped up to me too. Unless they mean that you need to transfer your account to the other Switch.
NES games don't have value in 2018, especially since emulation is widespread.I do think too many people are sleeping on the classic games element.

There's a mountain of licensing issues there. I imagine they'd be able to get some, but don't forget that licensing is a thing. Just because they existed on the NES doesn't mean Nintendo can put them on the service outright.Look at the games. There are better multiplayer games for the NES. Wait. How many people can play online on one console with ONE paid PSN subscription? Sony added some kind of 7 Family members thingy too since firmware 5.0.0.Only 20€ for one account with only a bunch of roms throw in...
And I'm pretty sure you can use backups with PS4, cloud saves is the only way with Switch and costs money.
This doesn't actually fix any of your issues with voice chat, muting people does however. Nintendo isn't promising any of that, they're just promising if you ever did want to talk to your friends it'd be a pain in the ass.Seems about what I expected. And this thread is also about what I expected no matter what Nintendo revealed.
I, for one, am glad they're keeping voice chat locked away to the phone. I've never been happy with voice chat on consoles and it's a big factor in why I don't play online on them. So Nintendo promising me that I'll never have to listen to anyone screaming, eating, listening to loud music or being called all the slurs in the dictionary sounds great to me. Finally a console I can play online on.

So, yeah, I'm in. Looks exactly like what I was expecting, except with more NES games.
Was thinking Fire Emblem, actually. Also never say never. Earthbound Zero exists.
Okay but The Legend of Zelda, SMB1+3. We can only imagine that Metroid will get in there too at some point. 2/3 of a NES Classic for £18 (a year) seems like a pretty sweet deal, especially as they'll add more games.Look at the games. What? Lol. People on forums are constantly asking for VC and suddenly these classic games have no value? And these nes games also have added online play.NES games don't have value in 2018, especially since emulation is widespread.

The money that they make from this goes towards the funding of a new F-Zero title, Metroid Prime 5, Waverace Switch and Mother 3 localisation.
My issue with voice chat is that it's the default. Without it being the default, games will have to be designed around that. And thus make voice chat unnecessary. This doesn't actually fix any of your issues with voice chat, muting people does however. You could already share games between accounts since day one. It works different than the PS3/4. You select a game and it asks you who wants to play. You can then select your account, your wife's account or your daughter's account. With this family plan, is there any info on if the members of the family can share digital games?
Or do I have to keep being physical only to share games with my wife and daughter?

Because it's part of a wider thing. It's not an extra thing like how for a while you needed Xbox Live Gold and then could get Netflix which also required paymentThe cost is 20€/year, I don't see how you can extract the no extra cost part.
No, only the "primary" account's games can be played on a switch. We have a switch each, not one we share. You could already share games between accounts since day one. It works different than the PS3/4. You select a game and it asks you who wants to play. You can then select your account, your wife's account or your daughter's account.
With a Sony console you have to logout of said account and log into the other account and select the game you want to play.

That doesnt change anything i said.'Online play' of a friend taking over the game and you having to watch and not be able to chat without a phone in your lap.
