Excellent, so we'll get them in the form of the free games with added online instead. Hyped for some N64 and GC stuff. F-Zero X and GX online would be fuckin dope.

At last some transparency. Bummer for those who expected VC.

At least there's a homebrew Dolphin for Switch in the works. Gonna hack the shit out of my Switch.

Well there it is I guess. A little disappointing to not be able to play some older games on Switch but I can still play them elsewhere so it's not a big deal to me.

"The Virtual Console" banner. Just like I expected they're not using virtual console name brand anymore. Even more reason to believe in the Netflix subscription they will use.

Honestly, I'd rather not be paying individually for NES era games these days, happy getting access to a bunch through the online subscription.

Just gimme more visual options than VC has offered, I need my scanlines D:

obvious some time now "virtual console" as we know it wasn't coming. hopefully that doesn't mean the games won't be available period

I honestly think this is a better solution for me as I'm paying regardless(for online play) a really cheap amount with friends (family plan) and Nintendo prices the VC titles high anyway. I'm also gonna play stuff I wouldn't have bought otherwise.

I hope they expand to SNES and more.

Oh man. No. :(

I hope this at least means certain classic titles are released individually but even that seems out of the question.

Statement reads like a branding thing primarily. I am sure more classic Nintendo games will be heading to the Switch.

But if Nintendo aren't doing emulation of their older games (beyond NES), homebrew emulators will certainly plug the gap.

So what is the virtual Console? Is it old Nintendo games on their store like PSN? I haven't owned a Nintendo console since the GameCube so I'm out the loop a bit.

Can't wait for homebrew because of shit like this. People are willing and waiting to give their money and Nintendo just doesn't care.

While it would be nice to see a bunch of different systems' games show up on the subscription service if they're not doing VC, I'm not holding my breath. It feels pretty unlikely they'd specify NES only (at least at the start) if they intended to go all up through to Gamecube.

Everything about how Nintendo has handled the Virtual Console since DAY ONE of the Wii has been a disaster.

Doesn't say they're not coming, just says they're not coming as 'Virtual Console' titles.

If they weren't releasing them in any form they'd just say that there are no plans to release games beyond the one included in the monthly membership.

I suspect they're probably thinking more along the lines of Playstation Now/Microsoft Game Pass.

Before people get the wrong end of the stick, they're not saying the classics won't come to Switch.

If and when they do, it will be in a different format, so through the online service or part of a collection release (like Mega Man Legacy) etc.

I'd be all in for Metroid 2D classics collection.

"There are currently no plans to bring classic games together under the Virtual Console banner as has been done on other Nintendo systems," a Nintendo spokesperson told Kotaku in an e-mail late last night.

So it could be a total rebranding rather than nothing. I am still optimistic

If they're genuinely dropping the practice of bringing their classic library to their main platform in favor of a collection of separate little plastic shit boxes then the Switch's potential value drops by a lot for me.

Can't get third party support. Has the worst online service. Only platform that won't have a selection of games from its previous generations (except the one 30 years ago). Ouch.

If they are going to bring the games, and they're just dropping the brand "Virtual Console", this is some clunky ass messaging.

I think with 3rd parties finding their own "VC" catalogs, it was never going to happen like it did on prior consoles. Hopefully this netflix like service (that everyone said they wanted a couple years ago) ends up with some 3rd party classic titles, even if they are not as extensive. I'm hoping Nintendo's service is regularly updated with games throughout their history, up through Wii and 3DS (With most of Wii U already on Switch, I assume we will get the few other titles that didn't make it over eventually) Nice thing about a Netflix style service, is that I shouldn't need to worry about buying the games on a new platform, the service would just have to also be available on the next platform.

Expected, people will pay more for a re-release so why sell the original for less?
