So I just went with the Vivid setting on the TCL and WOW this TV is beautiful!!! I watched Game of Thrones with the fast action motion thing and it was like watching a whole new show!! Felt like I was there. Haven't even attempted to play any games yet and already know my mind will be blown! BTW this is my first 4k/ hdr tv and also the biggest TV I've ever had (65inch), so maybe I'm just a little more easily blown away.

Looking to sell my 55" QLED soon and get a true OLED. What's the better brand for gaming? I'd like to keep the size, 4K and HDR if anyone can give me any recommendations

Vivid picture mode and the soap opera effect turned on?
Sorry man, you won't find many fans of those things here.

I'm happy you like that but Vivid is never accurate. You should try to calibrate it with Normal mode or something like a Cinema mode first.

LG OLED's have lower input lag, are lower priced and seem to get brighter in HDR. I have a hard time recommending the Sony OLED's unless you really value their motion and don't care about price.

Haha. I know, but I didn't feel like playing with settings all night so I just went with what popped. Watching Game of Thrones in soap opera effect was like watching the most brutal daytime soap opera I've ever seen!

I tried the settings for the P series from rtings and didnt think it looked good. I'll wait and see if they post some new ones for the 6 series.

The only eyes you need to impress are your own. Personally, I'd say Vivid appears most impressive in the short term but when you get used to a "movie"-esque setting, it's a far better image long term.

Sounds like they did a good job of addressing the main complaint with last year's tv.

In my side-by-side tests against the Samsung Q8 and Sony X900F, the TCL more than held its own, with deeper black levels and better contrast in many scenes than those more-expensive sets. It couldn't get quite as bright, but still has plenty of light output for bright rooms and high-dynamic-range TV shows and movies. Color accuracy and video processing were also a bit worse than those others, but by no means poor, and TCL improved uniformity significantly, which was an issue last year.

This category was a weakness for the 2017 P series, but not the 2018 6 series. With full-field test patterns it looked nearly as good as the others, with edges just slightly darker than the middle and no visible backlight structure as seen on the P. In tough program material, namely a hockey match, its dirty-screen effect was no worse than any of the other sets in my lineup, and definitely superior to its predecessor.

Question, should I go for a TV or monitor if I want my PC and console connected at the same time, I only have room for a 32".

FYI Saving Private Ryan came out on UHD Blu today and is supposed to be a top notch transfer. Lots of glowing impressions on bluray.com forums. It's 19.99 on Amazon. Got Best buy to price match from 27.99 down to Amazons price.

Plasmas "flicker" at something like 600Hz, so it is very difficult to see the flickering. It is what helps mask the stuttering.

Although plasmas can flicker up to 10 times per refresh to construct their image (thus the 600hz), a selling point of the 2012 and 2013 Panasonic models was that they needed far less flashes to do so. By constructing the image in less time motion appears sharper, but this has the side effect of making 60hz flicker visible again, which I find pretty funny. It's still a softer flicker than on a 60hz crt, and I can only ever see it by walking into the room while it is displaying a nearly or fully white image as my eyes will adjust in a few moments, but it is there. Now the 96hz mode on the other hand... It takes minutes in a dark room for me to stop seeing the flicker there, but at least it stops at all. I'd imagine for some people it never does.

Don't cinema projectors also "flicker" the image? I thought that was one of the reasons plasma had a more film-like look with movies.

It's probably a coin flip, or perhaps more of a dice roll, just like with the overall picture quality of a theater. I don't go to theaters much anymore, but when I do I usually see sample and hold blur. When I saw Zombieland (back in the day I suppose.. its been a while), during the panning shot of them driving down the long 2 lane road in that suv, I distinctly saw the triple strobe of 72hz flashing. But that was a while ago, at this point most projectors being used likely do not flicker.

Of course I would post in this thread about something involving a plasma lol. I really want to go oled, but I also really, really want the 2.1. The truest struggle. And I should try a dolby cinema some time, maybe it will change my opinion on theaters.

When showing white images the edges on my TCL 65 display a faint black. Most noticeable in the corners. Is this a settings issue, or is there a problem?

Was just checking the market for a 4k Blu-ray player as I love to watch movies and am very aware of the compression in all those streaming services.
Impulse bought a Samsung UBD M8500 because it was 140 bucks on eBay. Bought the 4k version of Planet Earth 2 as well. This gonna be good! Hope everything will arrive till Saturday so I can try it.

I'll be moving into a new place in December and won't be able to take any TVs with me - perfect opportunity to grab new stuff.

But, despite the fact that there's always something new around the corner and you'll always find somebody saying "wait for ______ next year", buying a TV / Receiver Just before HDMI 2.1 releases... I feel it'd be a particularly bad time to get in. But then again, I can't just move in in December with nothing and then wait for April/May 2019 sets to release. The HDMI 2.1 spec looks insane. VRR, 120fps, up to 10(?)k resolution, eARC...

Even if all we get is VRR + 4k60 HDR 4:4:4 + eARC and the fancier stuff (exotic resolutions and framerates) gets ignored, I would probably regret making a large investment on Black Friday and then have a ton of legit new useful features come out 5 months later.

The jump from good 2016 sets to 2017, and 2017 to 2018 seems so minor next to what could potentially be the 2018 to 2019 jump. But I'll feel REAL dumb if I skip Black Friday deals and then the narrative changes to "oh you'll get this stuff in 2020".

So my question is: how late in the year do you think we can reasonably expect to have reliable ish info on what the 2019 sets will bring to the table?

CES in January 2019 most likely.

Thanks for the answer! I have a very good Gsync 1440p Acer monitor, but I want that HDR and 4k for console games and movies as well.

In the beginning, I wanted a good 40" TV that can do 4k and some ok HDR, without being expensive. Tons of "recommended" TVs for around 400€ - 700€ on those comparison sites.

BUT:

I've gone into crazy research mode and read ALL the "Best of" lists, reviews of the top TVs, watched Youtube reviews etc. And holy shit! It's complicated as fuck! First of, every company has it's own product lines or "series". You think that if you read the review for the 55" TV, the same stuff applies to the other TVs in the same series. Wrong! While a lot of 55" and bigger TVs have nice contrast, good panels etc., the 40", 43" or 49" TVs have different panels and are worse the majority of the time. It doesn't say it on the Amazon page or on the company homepages, I had to dive into some detailed tests to find out. Most big TVs have 100hz panels for example, while the smaller ones only have 50mhz panels. Or the big versions have a real HDR10 panel while everything under 50" uses HDR8+ panels. All within the same series.
While the small TVs get good ratings on those comparison sites, the bigger variants of those same TVs are suddenly mediocre compared to the other good big TVs.
Obviously, HDR is supported by all those "small" TVs, but implemented pretty badly because the real HDR panels are build into the 50"+ and very expensive TVs. Blacks, contrast and brightness are so much worse compared to the real good expensive, big TVs.

There is backlight dimming for good blacks for example, which a lot of TVs have. There is a checked box on all those spread sheets and you think the TV has it. Yeah but there are huge differences, some have a lot of small "areas" that can be dimmed individually, others have six horizontal zones that can be dimmed, others dimm the whole screen. Which makes a big difference, because the not dimmed areas look more grey than black.
Also, brightness is very important for HDR and most screens are just not bright enough to produce proper HDR. They are just HDR10 compatible and have a bit higher contrast than normal when using HDR. In other words, it says HDR but really isn't.

So there are a lot of checked boxes on paper, but it's often meaningless. And then every manufacturer has it's own names and words for the same things or uses different technologies, which makes it even more complicated to compare them. It's crazy how much the costumer has to read to understand all that stuff.

In the end, I bought a TV that was on not mentioned anywhere in those Top 10 lists for TVs smaller than 50". I bought an LG 49SJ800V. With 49" t's bigger than I wanted, but there was just nothing comparable under 50". It has a native HDR10 panel with good contrast and ok blacks (6 horizontal lines of dimming), 120mhz, the very cool Nano Cell Technology which is not as good as the crazy expensive OLEDs, but still very good. It has decent Harmann Kardon speaker and very important for me: Very low input lag. Bought it new on Ebay for a good price. It will arrive end of this week, I'm curious to test it. Haven't played the new God Of War yet, so I think it would be a perfect test for the new TV.

Can you keep me updated on what you think of this TV?

I'm looking for a cheaper TV and this one, what with its HDR, 120hz screen has caught my eye but I can't seem to find a rtings.com esque review of it, particularly the input lag in 4k@60Hz 4:4:2 HDR, as my current (and old) TV has something like 48ms input delay in 4K so I have to keep my PS4 Pro in 1080p for that 26.5ms delay. Also, hooking my PC up to it and finally seeing what 120fps is all about is a HUGE draw.

It's going to be either this TV, or one of the TCL P6s' when they arrive in the European market this summer.

Hey mates, I found this LG 32GK850G monitor and to my untrained eyes it doesn't look half bad, anyone care to share some insight? Or maybe even an alternative
LG 32GK850G << LINK

How close to the monitor will you be sitting? It has a VA panel... color degradation becomes super obvious the closer you are to a VA screen. I sit 2 fit away from my 32 inch IPS monitor.

My Kuro died from a mainboard error (power light blinking 7 times) and Pioneer didn't want to fix it. So I bought a LG 55C7T. But I haven't really felt blown away by any content yet. Tried God of War and Uncharted 4, they look good but not like, remarkably different. Don't have any 4K blu-rays. Don't know if my BD player even plays 4K. Netflix wants another 3 bucks a month for 4K, so I haven't pulled the trigger yet. Youtube tech demos are pretty but they're just tech demos and tech demos are boring. TLOU Remastered has really bad HDR imo. Any recommendations? Besides buying a XB1. Lol.

How likely is HDMI 2.11 and specifically VRR to be a "premium" feature for the foreseeable future?
Or should be expect basically all 2019 models to have it?

I'm very tempted by the TCL of course, but I'm worried that by buying now, I'll be missing out on this feature next year.

I don't even think 2019 TVs will have it at this point. But I'm sure we'll see more with the VRR feature like the Samsung this year.

He measured 4k HDR input lag at 21ms while rtings put it at 29ms, weird. Dynamic tone mapping seems to make a pretty visible difference in his example.

Top notch jokes as always, though.

C'mon Smokey! You get killer GPU's, time to invest in a good home theatre sound system. Get a nice ATMOS set up and you will love it!

I don't have the proper space for a true Atmos setup. When I get a house and a media room though, which should happen in the next few years, I'm going to go crazy.

Your never shy with your money Smokey, pick up a set of nuraphones.

Awesome sound for movies, music and games, all without annoying the neighbours.

I've...never heard of these actually. I fully admit the audio aode is where I'm a bit behind. I've never really had the space to do it how I've wanted. I've started reading up on it more and more as of late though.

Coincidentally, I woke up at ~4AM today and couldn't sleep, saw the post, flipped over to the night theme and almost went blind.

Idc all that much about the layout, but the DarkEra color scheme is perfect as is. Super readable and works really. Idk why they'd change that part.

"Night" themes are tailored to be easy on the eyes...not blinding.

That, and the fact that Dark utilizes 90% of the screen while night utilizes 2/3 means it's broken as is. I'm sure they'll fix it.

I use Astro A50s. They have been really, really solid. Good battery life, good quality sound, some customization options, and their wireless (most important thing for me).

There's plenty that sound better (for hundreds or thousands of dollars more) but wireless is my number one requirement, and that significantly narrows the playing field, esp if you want to use them for games and in conjunction w/ a surround sound system.

https://www.rtings.com/headphones/reviews/astro/a50-wireless

P.s. the xbox ones have a real G4M3R look to them, which is dislike (mine are gen 2s and weren't so bad, but they're on gen 3 now and the xbox ones are gaudy) but the PS4 ones are pretty much just black with a bit of blue, which i find to be much more understated.

I used my A50s as my only sound for 14 months when i was in an apartment. They aren't perfect, but for the price and the features I thought they were great.

Ohhhhhhhhh, yeah that's another scenario where you can go nuts. I honestly have a $99 pair of bose in ears (https://www.amazon.com/Bose-SoundSport-ear-headphones-Charcoal/dp/B0117RFOEG) and i love them. I've bought the various iterations of those earbuds for the last ten years. They fit really, really well and sound great.

those are my daily drivers tho, probably use them anywhere from 2 to 10 hours a day.

Wish i could afford a 77" oled lol.

Today is the day!

Great to see input lag remains the same in 4k HDR, bummed that peak HDR on the 77 inch appears less than on the smaller models? Hoping for no stuck pixels

Not sure why RTINGs and HDTVtest got different input lag measurements in 4k HDR?

Headphones are one of those subjective things.... Definitely worth buying somewhere that you can return/exchange if you don't like them. e.g. I initially bought the $129 bose ones, but the way the noise isolation tips fit in my ear would hurt my ear after an hour or two, so i exchanged em for the cheaper ones. The best advice I can give is listen to music that you've heard a million times. Makes it easiest to compare headphones, since you're familiar with how the songs "sound." (that's a best practice for buying any new speakers also).

I have these https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-PRO500MK2-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B005W2EXKO , which are good, but they just take up too much space. I have a few pairs of shitty in-ears but they kill my ears after 2-3 hours on a flight.

Get it while you can. Fun fact: The change in LGD's manufacturing process next year to the 10.5G panel lines means this could be the last year we see a 77" OLED. The way the glass is cut will likely lead to that becoming a 75" model instead.

Didn't I read that the new process may result in 88" OLEDs? O.O
