Is this really true that if you enable dark mode on some apps like YouTube, you save battery life? Because the black colours are not illuminated? The pixels will only light up colours that are not black.

Since this iPhone support HDR, does anybody have a good video that show off the capability? Does the iPhone support 10-bit or 8-bit?

Pure black pixels are turned off, yes. So if an app has a pure black mode, or you have a wallpaper that's mostly black like I do, it helps. Don't know how much it does, but mathematically speaking it will

Every time I want to make a screenshot, I instinctively press Volume Down together with the Power button instead of Volume Up. I wish it would work with both buttons.

Ravpower - don't get the 15 dollar one, it's only 5 watt. Go for the 40 dollar one - it supports 7.5 watt charging. It's also incredibly well made.
Sorry, I should have been more specific, I'm asking about a wired fast charger for the iPhone X. If I'm looking to get a wireless fast charger I'll definitely consider that one though :)

How does HDR even work with the iPhone/Youtube. When I play a HDR video it doesn't seem to max the backlight when it plays or anything....it just plays like any other video...

Just get an Anker fast charger. Can't really go wrong with anything Anker tbh.
Awesome, that's one I've been eyeing, thanks. Mac Rumors claims it only charges a little faster than a 12W iPad charger (which is what I use now), which I find strange, but whatever, I want to try it anyway. Thanks!

Also, when they talk about USB-C, is the standard Apple brand charging cable USB-C? Or do I need to buy another one?

They make a lightning to USB-Cable, different than the one in the box. $25 for 1 meter, $35 for 2 meters, so a $5 increase on the normal OEM cables

I need to get a new case. I've got the white silicone case from Apple, and I dislike just how bulky it is. A coworker has a similar case for his One Plus, but it's way thinner. It looks so much better. And I absolutely hate the feeling of the raised edges whenever I swipe from the edge.

You ever try the Apple leather cases? I have one for mine and I love it. Lightweight and the bezels are smooth. You get a lip on the sides but it's not terrible.

I'm sorry, because I gave a recommendation for it. But I can't be blamed for loving it. I'm spotting it more and more in the wild too!

I own both Apple cases, leather and silicone, and the dimensions and weight and pretty much the same. If he didn't like the lip on the silicone case, he won't like on the leather case either. But I share your opinion, I barely feel them.

Did you? I can't remember. But I probably would have bought this case anyway, so don't worry.

I haven't tried them, but I don't think I'm gonna like leather. Either way, I'd really like a case without any lip/edge.

iOS 11 has no additional support for VP9. Also "interesting" on how specific YouTube is on device support. So the A11 supports it... but only on X, not 8. And the A10X supports it.. but only on iPad Pro 10.5, not on Apple TV 4K.

so I'm not..... really sure... what YouTube is going for with HDR support. Definitely weird. Hopefully they just knock it the fuck off and release HDR for all iOS/tvOS devices that support it.. and as long as there is support for the VP9 CODEC... get 4K on Apple TV 4K (they're literally the only big player not doing so now that Vudu upgraded their app to 4K Dolby/HDR)

I think he fact that iPhone 8 doesn't have an HDR capable screen should explain why they don't support HDR on it? Also, in my experience, YouTube app updates on Apple TV always lag behind the iOS app, so probably Apple TV 4K support will be added in the future.

I do wonder how are they serving these videos to iOS. My guess is they do a yet another re-encode to something supported by iOS. They already have to do a crapload of reencodes for every video, so what's one more.

Another user posted a screen of the stats during playback on iPhone X and it says VP9.2. So they are probably transcoding on the fly on device? Certainly the latest A-series chips are capable of that but I imagine it would consume quite a bit of battery. That might also be one reason why theres still no 4K on ATV, 4K on-the-fly encoding sounds way too intensive.

Watching the same video on my iPhone X and iPad 12.9, i'm Not seeing HDR kick in on the iPad. Sur;eg the 12.9 should have HDR support as well as the 10.5?

That's what Borghe is saying, since it's not VP9 Google must be doing some custom stuff. It should work on a second gen 12.9, yes, but right now seems limited to the 10.5 for unknown reasons

Remember to max out your backlight when viewing HDR.
You're not really getting the effect otherwise. (other phones do this automatically)

Yeah, they are most likely decoding in software then, and outputting decoded feed to screen directly. I doubt there would be need to actually transcode it into anything - just decode into a raw stream into memory and render that onto screen.

It's also probably why it maxes out at 1080p. Decoding the 4K VP9 feed in software is probably too demanding.

I saw someone have a gif as lock screen. Can't find a how-to on the interwebs. Somebody here knows how to do it?

Do y'all get the option for 1440p for videos on YouTube when they're offered on the site on the official app? I feel like when the phone came out I used to be able to select it, but I haven't for awhile. 1440p used to look pretty good on these screens.

Were they jailbroken?

I don't think so.

VWallpaper 2 for videos, or PokeGoLSGIF for gifs if you're jailbroken. Not sure how you would do it on stock though.

I used the Apple TV screensavers as my lockscreen wallpaper

Thanks!

Oh wait, you need to jailbreak it either way. Apparently his phone was jailbroken. Thanks anyway.

So my X died yesterday after a few too many water splashes while I was at a pool party. It never even got fully submerged. Guess I overestimated it's water resistance capability? Either way getting a brand new one delivered tomorrow (bright side my current one had a cracked back, so itll be like new again!)

Has anyone else had one die just from splashes?

11.4 is out and it includes iCloud messages syncing. If you want to jailbreak, stay on 11.3.1.

Like the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, the iPhone X carries an IP67 certification. The '6' in the '67' is for the dust-proof rating of the handset, while the '7' denotes its water-resistance ability. If one goes by Apple's description, the iPhone X can withstand being submerged in water for up to 30 minutes in up to 1.5m depth.
I would imagine the cracked back is the reason for the water damage.

Probably not the best place to ask but anyway.
My parents are coming over to the US for a month. What is the best way to get a sim card they can use here for navigation, surfing and messaging? Prepaid doesn't seem to be as much of a thing here as it is in Europe.

Something like ATT or T-Mobile prepaid SIM cards sold at stores like Walmart should do the trick.

Ready to ditch this iPhone X. Battery life continually lets me down. 6+, 6S+, 7+ never, ever weren't there for me when I needed them. Going plus next time for sure.

So is the Dolphin browser currently the only browser that supports classic tab browsing - as in the tabs are always on top.
Ive used Mercury on my 7, and tried downloading it on my recently purchased X - but it seems like they removed it from the app store.
I must have downloaded 10 different browsers trying to find 1 that supports tabbed browsing - and Dolphin is the only 1, or am I wrong?

You have to have a faulty battery. Even on/off use after 8 hours I still have 50% power.

Battery health good. Just consistently shown me that this isn't quite the level I need. About what I expected coming from my 7+, which was one of my worst fears going into the phone. I hoped for more but didn't get it; it's just not quite there yet.

Same here. Today in the morning, it was at approximately 80%. Now, about four hours later, it's 50%. I barely used it.
Battery health = 100%
