I'm always very curious about the period of time at Fromsoftware beginning with the release of Dark Souls in 2011 and culminating with the release of Dark Souls 3 in 2016. After a relatively quick turnaround on Dark Souls (released 17 months after Demon's Souls), there was a 2.5 period with no releases, followed by yearly releases every March for three years (DS2, BB, DS3). Of course they weren't working on DS2 for 2.5 years and then BB and DS3 for one year each… so I wonder how the development processes went for those three games. Were DS2 and Bloodborne being worked on in parallel? Perhaps the DS2 team began work on DS3 and then the Bloodborne team joined them after the game released in 2015? Do we have any concrete information about how development went during this period?

Perhaps they are in another such period of simultaneous development now, having alluded to three games in development (dark fantasy RPG, Armored Core, something new). A release in Fall 2018 would be 2.5 years after DS3, and could be the beginning of another amazing run of games from From.
Iirc, Bloodborne started development one year prior to Dark Souls 2's release, so both games were developed in parallel for some time. Dark Souls 3 also started development pretty early, so I guess they're very used to developing multiple games at the same time.

It might be that we're currently in the waiting period again, much like between Dark Souls 1 and 2. Perhaps they will start to release their new games from 2018 or 2019 onwards, one year apart.

Why? It sounds kinda awesome to me, especially since we've had five games based on European aesthetics. It'd be nice of From to switch it up if they want to continue the Soulsborne formula.
Because Nioh had already covered the samurai/ninja thing comprehensively, and not to mention we have Ghost of Tsushima coming up. Personally I'd prefer a completely new setting in a different time period.

I've been having a look into cursive Japanese (kuzushiji) and playing around with image editing software.

If these characters are what I think they are, then they represent measurements of height.
We're potentially looking at a description of a person.

Not much to go on right now, but do you folks reckon it's worth pursuing this line of investigation?

There is a huge amount developer could do using a Japanese centric setting without ever touching upon the standard settings of samurai and ninjas. Look at Bloodborne that takes influence from as far back as the late middle ages up to the 1800's and merges many different fictional styles from across the west to create something unique. If the script is ancient Chinese (which is the suggestion) then that opens up the setting of the theme massively as it could really be anywhere in that part of the world and many different cultures. But let's say it is set in Japan this puts the setting way before the samurai existed in a form they are recognised today and even if you look at the business usage of the language it restricts it to certain areas. Then again Bloodborne used runes similar to those of the anglo-saxons throughout and that was well before any of the obvious themes in that game so it could literally be anything going off FS past output.

Guys, you are overthinking the whole "clashing with the setting" thing.
Bloodborne was set in a Victorian style city, so in our world the timeline would be between 1837~1901. Japan underwent radical changes during the Meiji period (1868~1912) which included the dismantling of the class system and therefor the samurai. There is a lot to work with there - can you imagine a Bloodborne set in a city that resembles Tokyo in the Meiji period? I sure can... it sounds awesome.

Both Nioh and Ghost of Tsushima are set in periods that predate even the Edo period (1603~1868), so there are plenty of fresh ideas to work with, even if a potential Bloodborne sequel is inspired by Japan.

Description of an assassination target for hired ninja?

I sure hope so, because I'd stealth kill for a new Tenchu.

If it were up to me I'd choose new IP, but I'm going to play whatever it is.

I haven't played a tenchu game since the first one but this thread has made me interested. Are they worth it? Which are better and which are weaker?

If you want the highlights, play Tenchu 2 and Wrath of Heaven. Shadow Assassins/Tenchu 4 is also great on PSP (motion controls ruin it on Wii IMO) but YMMV on that one.

You should totally play Shinobido and Shinobido 2 though, spiritual successors.

It's either a new full-on Tenchu title or a spiritual successor to it much like Bloodborne was to Souls. My speculation here only obviously.

I'd say spiritual successor to Tenchu is most likely since the brand name is probably tarnished and doesn't hold much weight anymore I'd imagine."Shadows Die Twice" is a Tenchu thing as far as I remember being a fan of the series.

Guess we'll find out somewhere in the next 12 months? Goddamnit...

Should probably add that no matter what this turns out to be, take.mah.moneyz

Didn't DS3 have random Arabic inscriptions in Archdragon Peak that turned out to be newspaper clippings?

You'd hope they'd be more careful with a teaser that fans are going to pick apart vs random background scenery, but there is a precedent of text meaning nothing. That said...yeah I think it's worth a look!

Bloodborne 2, new Souls game or Tenchu revival, whatever this turns out to be I'll be in like Flynn because it's From Software and I loved all the aforementioned games!

I think they're kanji for numbers and old units of measurement. Starting to get an idea of some others, too. Gonna spend some time putting a little case together.

Hah! Just looked it up. That's pretty funny :) Hopefully this isn't a random texture grab job!

BB2 would really make sense. Its the right timing and it sold great so Sony would obviously want a sequel.

Are people unaware of the Kuon similarities or is there more convincing evidence that it's BB?

It kind of falls under "unexpected IP" but it's still a FromSoft game, so it can't be that unexpected.

i'm so irritated by the vaguness of this teaser that i'm boycotting the idea of playing whatever game this is until it's released.

Yeah, if Souls got all those sequels, it's ok for the better IP in Bloodborne to get at least one prequel/sequel too. I want it more than Tenchu or Armored Core at the moment. But I'm starting to think it's not Bloodborne related. I think if they wanted to tease Bloodborne 2, they would have done it at PSX.

Yeah, I'm thinking it'll be a spiritual successor to Bloodborne that maybe takes place in Japan or China. Multi platform is my guess.

Probably really, really close to 3 million by now.

Not sure how respectable it is bur VGChartz puts it at 2.89mil so you are pretty much on the money.

Still want to give it a sexy new project name. If The outcome of the poll after a week is Soulsborne can we call it Project Expected vs Project Unexpected? Not having a project name is killing me.

I don't know if I'd really care for an Asian setting at this point. I've had my fill after Nioh, and Ghosts of Tsushima is going to have that type of setting as well.
Like others have said: there's plenty you could do with a Japanese aesthetic that does NOT have to do with Samurai and/or Ninja, at all.

Hell, one thing that disappointed me about Nioh was that it didn't go deep enough with Yokai lore, and it just served as an auxiliary role for the historical fantasy backdrop. It's pretty much the main reason I'd love to see what a modern From could do with something like a "Souls-like" that takes over where Kuon left off, and just goes deep into Kaidan/Kwaidan-style horror stories to craft a world.

Thank goodness the ridiculous Bloodborne 2 speculation can finally die.

People grasping at straws left and right. It was bizarre to watch.

Shocked.

It has been said a few times already by people in the now that is is not BB2 or an exclusive.
