Every damn Smart Alec kid.
Boy, this comic strip consistently makes me laugh

I thought comic strips couldn't do that anymore

The same thing happened when Jerry Scott wrote Nancy and Bobby London wrote Popeye, these are the crusty fucks who think every city is a den of thieves and skin colors darker than Y3B2 are an affront against humanity. They have nothing better to do except post on local newspaper sites whilst they wait to vote straight ticket Republican in November.

Gotta admit, I'm with the majority of you here. I find these new strips highly amusing.

Never knew about Nancy before this thread, either. Perhaps I'll check out the classic strips.

Same here, it's great. Honestly gave me a kick to get back into comics I'm general. I think I'll go dig into some of my old stuff. Maybe pick up a Get Fuzzy, or Calvin and Hobbes. I always enjoyed those and it's been a long time.

Get Fuzzy was for people who liked the idea that their pets could talk much more than they liked jokes

Wow, it has been a long while since I've enjoyed a newspaper comic this much. The ones in my paper - Zits, Non Sequitur, Wizard of Id - are way too inconsistent.

Interesting tactic-- just go directly back to 1940s Aunt Fritzi, zero frills, just the classic look.

This Aunt doesn't even sit around looking really sexy talking about Elvis and how kids nowadays don't watch Happy Days!

Well, to be fair, she hasn't actually said anything yet. I reckon she's a Wu-Tang Clan fan.

I'm surprised it's pretty much a pure version of 1940's Fritzi, which seems a bit weird in the context of the teacher being Jaimes' own style - but then I think it's fair to point out that characters being a bit visually inconsistent is, well, a bit of a Nancy thing!

My fiancee is a teacher and this is not accurate. A better answer for the middle panel would be "The low pay and lack of institutional support."

This middle panel supports the widely held belief that teaching is a calling, which is the reason society gets away with paying them so little. It's a damaging perspective.

The panel may be trying to use humor, but it's doing it to make a serious point. I'm saying that the serious point is misguided.

And yeah, grading is hard, so that's a legit backup answer :P I can't begin to tell you how time consuming it is to grade hundreds of tests every few weeks

I'm surprised at how much I like this. I remember reading some of this about a decade ago but it never really stood out to me. The new writer's doing pretty great so far.

It's a joke about lost youth, not some political point. Also your proposed answer would be hamfisted, didactic, and not funny.

At this point, Aunt Fritzi was probably born in like '87 or something, so lengthy diatribes about how the youths fail to respect the Wu-Tang Clan are probably fitting.

I'm a teacher and why can't it be both?

I'm not a comic strip writer so of course mine shouldn't be in the strip. That doesn't make her existing message good, though

I'm a teacher and why can't it be both?

Sure, it can. I don't really want to disagree or argue with you about this since your experience as a teacher trumps mine as not-a-teacher. But I do think it's at least a little bit harmful to romanticize teaching as some kind of higher calling. Even if you feel like it is, you should be paid as though you're a highly skilled professional in a very in-demand field.

Even if teaching isn't some mystic calling, you can have the experience that the teacher does in that strip. Even if it's just a job.

Thanks. I'm not trying to argue against your fiancee's experiences as a teacher either. It's probably very accurate to their position/school/district. I think it's ok to view teaching as a calling-type position and hold the belief that the compensation should be improved.

Been lurking this thread. Gotta say Nancy is way more brilliant than I realized. That is the original Bushmiller comics and these new ones from Jaimes (Gilchrist can eat a dick).

Since Nancy has had so many creators, makes me wonder if Garfield would go the same route. After Jim Davis retires or dies, if he'll hand it off to a successor and we might get something new and funny out of it.

Props to Jaimes just straight-up doing 40's Aunt Fritzi. Far better than the old "Ecchi but for 70-something Americans" design, IMO.

Love the new writer as once again I'm laughing out loud lying in bed but man I really had a love for the art of the original.
